Hello Marjan,

Perhaps you have already heard of the following website, you can find a lot of historical info on www.drenlias.nl. The name "Pauls" has at least 27 hits. To me it was a very helpful website, hope it will be to you too.

Good luck!
greetings,

Marjolein
Hi!

My mother-in-law was a Mos who lived in Utrecht.
Her elder sister Wilhelmina died before 1950.
Her middle sister, Marie married Eddy.
Her brothers Dick, Ed, Frank, Henk, and more live in Netherlands too, but I do not know where or how to get in touch.

I am trying to put together a family history for my daughters who have young children now. Is there anyone out there who knows these Mos relatives - or could help me?

Thank you,
Marilynne Roscoe-Maagdenberg

Hermanus Fredrick Mos

Hello, I am looking for the ancestors of Hermanus Fredrick Mos b. 7 Oct 1856.
Here is his obit with most of the information that I have on him. Thank you for any leads in advance! Lori
From Obituary printed in the paper.
Fred came to United States in 1882 with his young wife, who passed away in 1888. All four children born of this marriage have died while still young. Mr. Moss [Mos] was married to Mrs. Gretja Hippen Luther who survives him with nine children, one having died in infancy. The remains of Mr. Moss were laid to rest in the old Edgerton cemetery which is part of his first farmstead, and was donated by him to the community. He was one of the first immigrants of Holland descent that first settled in these parts of the state and through his influence quite a number found homes in this neighborhood that have promoted the development and prosperity of the country and now enjoy its wealth. Funeral services were conducted at the home place by Rev. H.J.Heynen or [Heypen].

I am trying to find my ancestors, but right now i can`t find anything further back. I have found Geert Pauls, who is married with Aaltien Hendriks on 22 December 1737. They have two childeren : Geessien and Hendrikje. After the death of Aaltien he married with Jantjen Bartelds. They have also two childeren : Paul or Pouwel and Roelofjen. Does anyone know more about this Geerts Pauls ? Every information about a Mos person in Drenthe is very welcome.

Hi Aimee,

It was interesting that you mentioned a relative in Portugal named Mos. My family origins are in Spain, specifically northern Spain. (The portion of Spain that sits on top of Portugal on the map.)

A couple of years ago I was on vacation in Spain and Portugal and decided to go for a car tour for a couple of days. Right near the border of Spain and Portugal I almost drove off the road when right there in front of me was a highway exit sign reading "Mos."

To state the obvious, there is a town in Portugal that is named "Mos." No kidding. I don't know if this is a coincidence. Everything else points to a strong Dutch connection for this name.

Also, if I may, what is your race? I am of European descent, and have European features. I would like to know if the Mos name also includes persons of other ethnic or racial backgrounds.

Thanks... :) Party on dude!
Re: MOS Family Name

Hi Sabrina,
You may not know that...
In Spain, at birth, a child is given both his father's and mother's surnames. It works this way:
Your grandfather's name was Joseph Mos Silva.

He passed his father's first surname, "Mos" on to his children, and his son passed it on to you. (or your husband.)

The mother's surnames are used by each person throughout life, as a way, I suppose, of honoring their mother, but it is not passed on to the next generation.

So...
Mos would have been your grandfather's father's name, and on and on back through time.

While Silva would have been your grandfather's mother's name, which she was given by her father. And, unless your great-grandfather, (on her side) had a son, that branch of the "Silva" name would have ended with your grandmother.

I hope I wrote something intelligible. And, I hope you find it interesting.

Please do post again, if you find out more about your ancestors. I would like to know if maybe we are cousins. :)
hey hey wazzup? I have no idea what kind of age you people are so the language will be in my style (I hope you'll understand what I'm talking 'bout...) I'm 16 (almost 17) years old and I live in Zandvoort. I was kinda surprised when I saw you (nick) was born in Scheveningen. that's not so far from here. anyway, why's your name moss now? I'm digging in my family history right now, so if you like I can pass some information once in a while. there's not much yet but I intend to change that. the only thing I know until now is that there's an uncle from my father in America, and I have a cousin in portugal. the things I wanna know I can't look up 'cause you gotta pay for that (like I'm gonna do that). I'd like to know if there where mayby some far (far far...) familymembers who where slaves or in the military or 'some. anyway, I hope someone responds to this message.

MOS family name

Hi Auke, nice to hear from you.

I was aware of the Dutch connection. It seems to me that Holland is the birthplace of the Mos surname. It is in Holland that it appears to be most numerous.

It is a rather interesting leap of fantasy to figure out how it was transplanted to the North of Spain. There it is, for sure, though, and quite successful at that.

Now if I remember correctly, for a short period of time, Spain's monarch was the heir to the throne of Holland. The two countries were united briefly. Do you know about this?

Maybe you can share with me why your intuition tells you England?
