Carl,

Your Commie M. Moses was Monroe Commodore Mackland Moses, son of John Henry Moses and his first wife Lucy Ann Butler. I gather you are referring to John and Rachel's son William by the name of David?

I am researching ALL descendants of Johann Adam Moses and Maria Catherina Mueller -- including any descendants of Monroe Commodore Mackland Moses.

If you're willing to contact me directly at mdtaffet@twcny.rr.com, we can discuss this line more.

Whether this William/David is the same sheriff which started this thread, I have no idea.

-- Mary D.
If the William Moses you are looking for is the son of John Henry and Rachael Moses the following might be of help: William married Luella Potts in Bonham, Texas in 1891. They had one daughter, Mattie Elizabeth, who was born im 1892. William died in 1895. I cannot find out what killed William, but I do know that there was some illness going around the area at that time as my great Grandfather, Commie M. Moses (David's older brother and one time marshal of Wichita Falls, Texas)lost his first wife to the same illness around the same time. The daughter, Mattie, married a man by the name of Rufus W. Beard and she passed away in 1975. Her mother, David's widow, remarried in 1901 to man named J.L. Lewis.
Again I am unsure if this is the same William you are researching, but I do hope it might help.
Carl

The John Henry Moses and his second wife Rachel Luisa Jones did have a son named William D. Moses. He was born about 1868 in Mississippi. I have no further information about him at this time, though I could probably find some if I took the time to look [which I will a bit later]. John Henry Moses was the son of Monroe F. Moses and Lucinda Dunlap. Monroe was the son of Peter Moses and Elizabeth, whose maiden surname is not known. Peter was the son of Peter Moses and his first wife Margaretha Phaeris. I descend from that Peter Moses's second wife Mary Bradley.

The older Peter Moses was the son of the immigrant Johann Adam Moses and his wife Maria Catherina Mueller who came from Ilbesheim in Germany and settled in Chester County, PA. Adam Moses was most likely born in Holland about 1709 or so.

I'll take a look as soon as I get a chance to see if I can learn more about John Henry's son William.

Are you descend from John Henry Moses and Rachel Luisa Jones?

-- Mary D. But I was in contact with the Saccomanno family and they are relatives to Sandra Middleton.
Rose Lipp (wife of Nathan Moses) was a grandchild of Philip Lipp. Philip went to the USA including the whole family in 1883 except one daughter to the USA. The one daughter who stayed in Germany was Christina Lipp. She was the mother of my great-grandfather.
Is your father Harry a son of Archie April and my Rose Lipp?
Would be nice to get any information on that issue.
Re: Moses family from Wales to Wisconsin

Hi. I'm also struggling with making connections as I don't have much to go on. There is a portion of a letter that was written by Margaret (Moses) Head written in 1900. She shared that her family including her parents (Daniel and Hattie), and sisters Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Anna and herself left Carbondale PA when she was about 3 years of age, stopping for a time in Pittsburgh, someplace in Ohio and in Missouri (where her sister Mary and her mother died), before coming to Dodgeville Wisconsin where her father died. He was a miner. She said that her father, Daniel Moses, had a brother back in Pennsylvania that was a widower who had one son. She wasn't sure if it was the father or the son that was named David. (They immigrated between 1830 and 1836 as we know the daughter born in 1830 was born in Wales, and my gg-grandmother was born in Pennsylvania in 1836.) I recently found a reference for a Daniel Moses in Clifford, Pennsylvania in 1840, showing 5 girls, and wonder if this could be them. In considering this I was just researching Clifford, PA and ran across the following publication:

http://dsdata.com.au/genealogy/nepa/stocker_clifford2.html

This section caught my eye since it seem to reflect a David Moses that came from the same area as yours:
THE WELSH must have the credit of clearing up most of the slopes of Elk Mountain and making the substantial improvements now to be seen in the northwestern part of the township. They have here proven themselves an honest, industrious class of people, capable of the highest citizenship. The pioneers among them were Thomas Watkins and wife, Hannah, natives of Carmarthenshire, South Wales. They left that country in 1831, and after a voyage of two months landed in New York. The following spring found them at Carbondale, where Mr. Watkins obtained work in a coal-mine, but on the 10th of May, 1833, they came to Clifford, where they located on a tract of land near the southwest base of the South Knob of the Elk Mountain. With the exception of a small clearing below him, everything was a dense woods, with a heavy undergrowth, which afforded hiding-places for deer, elk and many noxious animals, which were so bold that it made the work of protecting domestic animals difficult. The work of clearing progressed slowly, but Mr. Watkins was a man of strong constitution (being full six feet high and measured nearly four feet around the chest), and the forests at last yielded to his efforts. Before his death, in May, 1870, he had cleared up a large farm, which is still in possession of Hannah Watkins, (now in her eighty-eighth year), and one of her sons, Watkin W. Watkins. Another son, John, lives in the same locality. For more than a year the Watkins family was deprived of the society of its countrymen, but in 1834 a number of Welsh families located

Clifford Township
Page 793

around them and made permanent the Welsh settlement, which, with the families living in Gibson and Herrick, now numbers more then three hundred souls. Those coming in 1834 were Zachariah Jenkins, David Reese, Wm. P. Davis, David Moses, David Anthony, Rev. Thomas Edwards, David Edwards and Robert Ellis and their families. The latter was a native of North Wales, and came with the others from New York. He located near the head of Long Pond, on the farm where his son Robert afterwards lived. The rest of the immigrants in this party were from South Wales. They left their native country May 21, 1834, from Swansea, in a brig bound for Quebec. The vessel was only of two hundred tons burden, not much larger than a canal-boat. There were on board the captain and five sailors, with thirty-four passengers. Most of the latter were religious people-Dissenters-now "coming to a country where they could be freed from paying tithes and supporting a church they did not believe in." They held religious meetings on board the ship, and as they had cross-winds the greater part of their voyage, they were seven weeks on the water before landing at Quebec. Three families among the passengers remained in Canada; the others came to Clifford. For many years the families endured all the hardships of pioneers, often carrying heavy burdens to mills, and from Carbondale, twelve miles distant. The few cows they owned browsed in the woods during the summer season, and, as they often failed to come home at night, their owners were obliged to hunt them up, ...
I don't know if this holds anything for you, but thought it might be a thread to follow. Please keep me posted on your search if you should find a connection between my Daniel Moses and your David. Thanks so much. Jean

Hi Jean, I am researching Moses my paternal G.G Grandfather David Moses b1812c David was an Iron caste engineer. We believe he was in Pennsylvania but returned to Wales where he married Elizabeth (unknown maiden name.) They lived later in Merthyr Wales. I know they had 1 son Henry Moses b.1852. Henry travelled to Pennsylvania US on the 'Arragon'to the mines(1873) as he was a mine surveyor. He went there to work with one of his Uncles on his fathers side. His bride to be followed him and they were married there in 1875, their first three children were born in US,David in Beaver Hills,Margret in Miners Hill ,Jennie(Jane)also born in Miners Hill. Due to poor health Henry his wife and 3 children returned to Wales. It was well known by the family that he left his paternal uncles and families there. However I haven't any US documentation to support this. From my research in Moses in Wales I have the possibilty of David having at least two brothers Thomas,Arthur,William or John.Sisters may have been Mary, Rachel,Ann. Sorry I can't as yet elaborate on this However I hope this is a connection as I have had little progress on Moses for so long now.US census records would suggest that there were alot of "Moses" in Penns around 1880.Any comments appreciated.Sue

Johann Adam Moses is also my immigrant ancestor. But there is at this time absolutely no evidence whatsover indicating who his parents might have been.

I do have indirect evidence stating that he was born in Holland, and we know from documentary evidence held by the archives (I forget the name of the city) that he was living in Ilbesheim by 1722 when he was confirmed. I also have indirect evidence, through the typical naming patterns for children, that his father was most likely named Johann Peter Moses.

So I really don't think there is any way to support connecting Adam to Johann Friedrich Moses.

-- Mary D.
Hello,

Samuel Ferris Moses was the son of Peter Moses and his first wife, Margaretha Phaeris (aka Margaret Ferris or Margaret Farris). Peter and his second wife Mary Bradley are my direct ancestors. Peter is the son of the immigrant (Johann) Adam Moses and his wife Maria Catherina Mueller. Take a look at the letter I have posted online which was written by Samuel F.'s son/Samuel H.'s brother Peter Allen Moses. It is available at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mdtaffet/M....

I have a private, password-protected website for descendants of this particular Moses line, as well as any other Moses family known to have a connection to Chester County, PA. Please contact me directly if you'd like to have access.

-- Mary D.
None of these appear to be related to my Moses Line -

Mine came from Virginia and went to Ohio and settled there

My grandmother was a Conover from the NJ area and I have lots of information on her and her Britton line but not much on my Moses family.

They moved from Ohio to California where they are now.

As I said I made it all the way back to Robert but could
not go any further.

Phyllis,
According to Family History Library Film #193913 "Evangelische Kirche Ilbesheim Kerchin Buch 1682-1824" the following births are recorded that may be of interest to you: 1714 (Dec) birth of Johan Jacob Vol--- one of the sponsors was Johan Fredrick Moses; 1716 (April 9) birth of Anna Margaretha Mosis, parents: Joh. Fredrick Mosis and Anna Xngl; 1718 (June 2) birth of Joh. Jacob Mosis, parents: Joh. Fredrick Mosis and Anna Engel; 1720 (April 10) birth of Maria Elizabethe Reinhardt, one of the sponsors was Fredrick Moses; 1760 (Aug 18) birth of Johan Fredrick Moses, parents Joh. Adam Moses and Anna Margaretha.

Deaths recorded in the same book include: Johan Fredrick Moses 18 Sept 1727 age 42y3m3d.(dob would be 15 June 1685)

Confirmations include: 1730 Johan Fredrick Moses.

There are no marriages recorded (that I found) for a Johan Fredrick Moses.

I have extracted all of the Moses, Mosis, Mosses (and similar variations) from this microfilm and will be happy to send you what I have. Be aware that the microfilm was dark and very difficult to read and it was written in Latin and some Old German, so there may be inexplicable errors in the translation.

Hope this helps,
MV Jacobs

Hi
If you go to this Minnesota Historical Society website you will find a tool to search for deaths in Minnesota. I believe I found 4 of the Moses siblings, and possibly a couple of others. I was able to find Hymen, Philip, Pauline Goldstein and Sophia Herwitz with a mothers maiden name of Cohen. I believe this are your people. Just something to start with
Leslie

I think I may have found a little more information for you using the Minn Historical site and the marriage site. It looks like Max Moses married a Reppen. Under the births section there are 2 daughters born to a Moses and a Reppen, Eileen Donna, born 5-26-1926 and Beverly Marilyn, born 6-21-1924. In his obituary, Max Moses has a daughter Mrs. William McMahon. I did find a marriage record for Eileen D. Moses and William James McMahon on 6-19-48. I also found a death record for Eileen D. McMahon on 4-20-91. The obituary also list a daughter Donna. For Donna Marilyn I did not find a marriage, but using mothers maiden name of Reppen I found a death record for Donna Schmuckler who died in Ramsey County on 1-13-97. Not 100% sure these women belong to you but it looks probable. Hope this information helps.
Leslie

Hi,

My family also originated in Germany through Johann Friedrich Moses, born 1690, in Evanglisch Ilbesheim Kirchheim, Bolanden, Bayern, Germany. His son, Johann Adam Moses came to the USA with his wife Maria Catherine Mueller, on 2 September 1743, on the Loyal Judith and landed in Philadelphia, PA. I don't believe he came because of any unrest.

Surname Moses and wife nee Cohen - in Minneapolis, Minnesota

I'm having a VERY difficult time tracing a Moses (wife nee: Cohen) family who made their home in Minnesota. (Specifically Minneapolis) It seems they had some connection in Chicago, Illinois, as 2 of their children were born in Chicago, but they’re residence was still listed as Minneapolis from 1895 on. I have an Isaac Moses (aka: Ike, Jake, Isadore, Gaala) born approximately 1871 in an area some where around Lithuania (Russia). His death certificate says his fathers name was Benjamin. He also claims to have immigrated around 1886'ish. He married around 1891-2 to Sarah/Mary Cohen who was born about 1873 in the same area as Isaac, and having immigrated around 1891. They had 7 children: Hymen 1893 Chicago, Benjamin 1895 MN, Philip 1896 MN, Max 1898 Chicago, Pauline (Goldstein) 1900 MN, Arthur (moved to LA, California) 1903 MN, Sophia (Herwitz) 1905 MN.
I'd really like to connect with anyone who could help out!
Thank you,
Rose
Minnesota

Moses family from Wales to Wisconsin

I am seeking information on Daniel and Hattie Moses (births in early 1800s) who immigrated from Wales to Carbondale Pennsylvania sometime between 1830 and 1836. They left Carbondale about 1840, stopping in Pittsburgh, Ohio, and Missouri before coming to Dodgeville, WI. Their children were Sarah (married William Evans), Mary (who died in Missouri) Hannah (don't know what happened to her), Anna (who married Peter Joseph Statz), and Margaret (who married Fudial Head). I have been unable to find any census reports on them prior to 1850 in Middleton, Wisconsin. Daniel supposedly also had a brother David in Pennsylvania. Any help appreciated. Jean

Re: Moses family in Germany

I hope I can help you in some way. Do you know where in Germany your Moses line comes from? My family comes from the Suhl/Heinriches area. It appears they were also a part of Prussia at one time in the 1700's to early 1800's. My line came to the South Dakota area in the states in the mid 1800's. My gr. greanddad married a woman in Germany and they came to SD, I believe, to follow her brothers who were doing well there. I do know my gr. gr. grandfather had some step siblings. It could be if your family is from the same area we may have a connection being distant cousins. Do you have a line started of family members--feel free to send it to me and I will see if there is a connection. I've not heard of any of my folks living in the Louisiana area but then again--if you came from one of the step siblings lines there is always a possibility. Feel free to write back!! I look forward to seeing if there's a relationship.

Re: Moses family in Germany

I believe, Phyllis-that we've connected previously and I don't see a connection with my family altho the names are curiously similar. I'm not sure where the location is of the origin of your family so I'm not sure if it's close to my folks' origin. My line of origin begins with Blasius Moses (1727-1789) in Allersburg, Prussia. His wife was Anna Maria Herdegen and their son in my line was Joseph Jacob (1769-1830) married to Johanna Weiss. Their son was Johann Friederick Philip Moses (1821-1855) and his wife was Johanna Wilhelm and their son was Valentine Moses (1848-1904) married to Christina Wagner. My Joseph Jacob was married twice and had children with each spouse and so Johann had half siblings. From what I gather Johann F.P. and his wife died young leaving behind 2 fairly young children and I think they might have been raised by aunts and uncles. Valentine and his wife left Germany in the 1880's for South Dakota. If anyone has a connection to this feel free to contact me. I do have the names of the half siblings and the other wife of Joseph Jacob--just not at my fingers right this minute.
