I don't know if you ever found one, but you can still get it for $40 at http://moshergenealogy.info/index.html. I ordered it and it appeared. I was (very) pleasantly surprised since my search at used book sources were around $300-400!

Looking for any information on Bert Mosher, during the 1945 to 60 period. He was married to Lillian Savoie at the time and they lived on Okinawa from about 1949 to 1957.
Bert was a photographer and owned American Photo Service on Okinawa at that time.
Main question is what was Bert’s real first name? Does anyone know what happened to him and Lillian after 1957 when they returned to the US? Thanks
I am researching the Tilton family of Orange Co. NY. My grandfather was Howard Mosher Tilton son of William V. Tilton who was the son of Joseph Tilton & Catherine Miller. Could there be any connection to your Moshers of NY? I believe there was a Emeline Higgs who married a Tilton and she had a sister Anna who is believed to have married a Mosher. Thank you for any info you can provide. Carole

My husband's Mosher family is from the Mt. Vernon, Miller area where we grew up. Any info on the Alonzo, Horatio Nelson Mosher roots would help. I am wondering if Julia Cook (Mosher)remarried a man named Hiram Phillips--looking at the census reports for that time and place it would appear to be so.
I am just now researching his roots so sorry this is such a long time from the posting I just read (from 2001!). Thanks if you can give me any help. Tammy Mosher

Edward Everett ,Lucy Jones, or Homer Mosher decendents

I'm Looking for any one that might have any information on my real grandfather. His Name was Homer Henery Mosher I know he was married atleast once to a Vivian Maxine "Jo" Gerrard and had three boys Richard H. Mosher , Dale Eugene
Mosher and David Mosher.
I was told that after he and Jo divorced I was told he had a least one other son. I would like to know If I have other family.
He lived in Kansas and Arizona. Last time I know of an address for him was about two months prior to his death in 1997 . He was living in a adult care home in Kanas some where and contacted my granny and my Unlce Dale about one year before he died. I have some ? I would like to know about him. My granny died two years ago and My uncle just recently and they were the only two that I know of that knew any thing about him.

If you have any information or are related in any manner please write to me at andysgirl_69@hotmail.com.......
I beleave he had brothers and sisters too, I'm not positive though even if you have info on where he was barried at of where he lived the last 45 years of his life I would be in your debt. Thank you very much Traci Marie Mosher

I'm looking for information on my real grandfather still. His name was Homer Henery Mosher, born 3-5-1909. Was told by my grandmother that he had several brothers and sister, but she didn't know any names. She said that they was a set of identical twin girls, I'm not sure but beleive he was the oldest child. Between 1935 and 1945 Homer lived in several places Mo,Ut,Az. He had three sons for sure Richard Homer Mosher 1940-2006, Dale Eugene Mosher 1943-2004 and David Wayne Mosher 1945?-1968. Homer told my older sister that he only had one other son after he and my granny divorced, but I can't even find him. I'm hoping to find other children born to Homer and some of his sibblings/neices & nephews that could shed a little more light on him.

A Homer H. Mosher appears on the 1930 census in Lynch, Texas Co, Missouri, as the 21 year old son of Edward E., aged 50, a farmer, and Lucy Mosher, aged 38. Other children in the household are Myrtle M, 12; Alzada S., 7; and Russell R., 5. All children are listed as born in Missouri, the father in Iowa, the mother in Missouri.
The family is also in Texas Co on the 1920 census, and the children listed are Homer, a daughter Helen, aged 6, and the baby Myrtle; the spelling on this census is Mosier.
{Sandra Kidd
researching Mosers of Pickens and Oconee Cos SC}

Everett and Lucie had atleast three children Homer, Helen, and Myrtle. Everett and Lucie would have been my great grand parents.
I am looking for children or grand children of Myrtle (Mosher) Deason or Helen Slaughter.
I have reason now to beleive that I might be able to find some more of my real grandfathers family. I found on here a post from a post from a Marilyn(Deason)Lucus that stated that she was my grandfathers neice. I would really like to find her or any one else that might be able to shed a light on that side of my family.

I'm going to try a different approach to this tracking down of my real grand fathers Homer's family. I beleive that Edward and Lucy were Homers parents. I know that Homer was born in Missouri and belive that Myrtle M, 12; Alzada S., 7; and Russell R., 5 were part of his siblings. This information came off a cencus from Lynch Missouri in 1930.
If you know any thing about any of these names please help me out.
This is all the information I have found or got from others in the past few years. I beleive that my great grand fathers name was Edward Everett or Everett Edward.
Thank you Traci

Hi Judy!!!

I'm descended from William's daughter Phoebe Mosher. Phebe married Platt Garrison.

Here is a link to my tree. http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=6726825&p...

May I see yours?

You seem to be well past the point that I am, but I never mind reading someone else's finds when they pertain to my family. Just in case you haven't seen this version of the story:
skirmish near Merrit's Tavern
Added by binney on 25 Jul 2008

On the 4th of December, 1781, (says General Heath) Captain Sackett of the New York levies near Harrison purchase below the lines, having gone a small distance from his detachment on the morning of the 2d, was taken prisoner by a party of the enemy.

The enemy afterward attacked Lieutenant Mosher to whom the command of the detachment fell. Lieutenant Mosher and the detachment behaved with great bravery, repulsed the enemy, killed one of them and two horses, and wounded eight of the enemy, among them a Captain Kipp, said mortally.
Colonel Holmes and Captain Kipp had their horses killed under them, the levies had not a man killed or wounded.

The above engagement took place in the vicinity of Merrit's tavern. Mosher's command consisted of only eighteen men, while the British horse under Colonel Holmes numbered over seventy.
We believe the whole period of the American war cannot produce such another instance, in which tho enemy were repulsed by so small a force. General Washington himself often spoke of this brilliant affair, and praised the gallantry of the brave Mosher.

Additional information about this story
Description skirmish with the British
Date 04 Dec 1781
Location near Harrison, Westchester, New York
Attached to William Mosher (1747 - 1832)

Also, you mentioned that one of one of Amos' children was killed by a train. When my grandmother used to babysit for us she would tell us this story with the added line that his Mom came back from the tracks with his severed foot in her apron - she dropped that foot in the hallway and there was a bloody footprint stain in the family hallway from that point on...

An educated guess of the MOSHER father you seek would be in the descendants of Hugh Mosher and Rebecca Maxson. They were residing in Tiverton, RI and Dartmouth, MA region during that time period. This couple had nine children and five of them were male. They were Nicholas b. Abt. 1666; John b. Abt. 1668; Joseph b. Abt. 1670; Daniel b. Bet. 1670-1677; and James b. Bet. 1678-1694. The father may also have been the son of one of these fellows. I believe that all these sons of Hugh died in Dartmouth, MA except for James who died in Beekman, Dutchess Co., NY.

This information comes from the book Descendants of Hugh Mosher and Rebecca Maxson Through Seven Generations, Rev. Ed. 1990 compiled by Mildred (Mosher) Chamberlain and Laura (McGaffey) Clarenbach.

There is no mention of a Sarah Gifford in the book in this time frame.

Mira Nelson

Robert Copeland is my GGGGrandfather and I am trying to find out if there were any children from his marriage to Juda Mosher. Also, I am trying to make the connection between the families of Copeland, DeLong, Mosher, and Callanan. They all lived in the New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio area and they all seemed to come from Albany, NY. Were they related or just good friends? Did they move together as a group? Is Copeland Hill Road named after Robert's family? I'm still quite new to genealogy, and right now I'm stuck. I'm just throwing this out hoping to snag some answers. Thanks!
In a recent e-mail posting, Ms. MIRA NELSON mentioned the book Descendants of Hugh Mosher and Rebecca Maxson Through Seven Generations, Rev. Ed. 1990 compiled by Mildred Chamberlain and Laura Clarenbach. I have been unable to obtain this publication through my local public library. I would greatly appreciate it if Ms. NELSON or someother list member having access to this publication would check and advise me if the publication has a listing for EDWARD PLATT MOSHER, born 1893, Augusta, Georgia; died 1957, Charleston, South Carolina.

Please contact me direct at the e-mail address set forth below.

Many thanks for your time and efforts.

R.

for Binney,
Thank you for the story of Wm Mosher. I don't have
that account, but I do have another which gives the
date of the incident as Dec. 2, 1781. I believe the
source of the document is "the MacDonald papers," but
I don't have much other information re: the source. I
would be glad to send you a copy by snail-mail at a later
time.
Yesterday, just before the "wireless" device on my old computer failed, I was able to access your family link on "ancestry." Unfortunately, I was not able to read it all. I did see some pix taken at the N. Highlands cemetery.
Right then the device failed! Today I got my "new"
computer back from the shop and for some reason cannot
use the "wireless" on it!!! (It just came back from
having been repaired in CA!!!) So I've been using "dial up,"
which is very slow! I tried to access your link tonight
and was unable to do so. Tomorrow I go back to the
computer shop (45 min. away ($^#&^%$) and see if they
can figure out why the wireless isn't working. (it's
my own fault. I got the new computer in Dec. and
dropped it in Feb. and it's been to CA twice since then
for repair.)
So, anyway, I've been doing the family tree stuff
for many years, with long periods of inactivity in between,
BUT I am quite new to the computer aspect of it.
I have a lot of info, but none of it is on a link
or website, etc. If you have specific qs for me, I
would be glad to answer them and to share what info I have.
Most of mine info has been garnered by my uncle, George
Mosher, who now lives in Montreal. Unfortunately, at
89 he is starting to forget a lot of things (his father,
Guy W. Mosher, lived to be 96 and did not have that
problem!) So I've recently gotten in touch with
a very distant cousin, Bill Mosher, who lives in
Bradenton, FL. We believe Bill was descended from Abel,
our William's brother and he has done a lot of research.
I was born and raised about 2 - 3 miles from the
"family homestead" near "Wade's Hill" and now I am a
snowbird, going back and forth from NY to FL. I am
preparing to leave FL in TWO DAYS, so I am quite
challenged right now. I'll be going to Franklin, NC
for a month, and then back to Cold Spring for the
summer. I would love to be in touch with you, but
hope we can communicate outside of "ancestry." Please
feel free to contact me at jcwfrog@juno.com, and I will
send you my name and snail-mail address.
I loved the story you sent about the mother carrying
her son's foot in the apron. How very, very sad, but
it certainly makes the family history come "alive."
Look forward to hearing from you,
Judy PS I figure we are 4th or 5th cousins.
My 4X great-grandfather was William Mosher, a capt. in the
Rev. War. After the war he settled along the Hudson R.
in an area called "Breakneck" just N of the (present) tunnel
on Rte. 9D. When I was a child the ruins of the house he
built (he was a stonemason) could still be seen. There
used to be a regular community in the area, but today it
is all part of a state park. William had at least 7
children; 1 of them was Phoebe, who married Platt Garrison.
They're both buried in Beacon. (Wm. is buried in a little
churchyard cemetery near the junction of Rte. 9 and 301.)
Another of Wm's children was Amos, my ancestor. Amos
stayed at Breakneck and raised his 10 children there. One
of them, Harrison, was killed by a train in 1855. Sometime
after that tragedy, and the death of Amos by drowning in
1850, the family moved into the village (Nelsonville, and
later to Cold Spring.) Ths story passed down about Amos
is that he liked to drink and wanted to replenish his
supply after his sons had "cut him off." So he got in
his boat one cold Nov. nite and never returned. The boat
showed up the next day, and he was found in the thawing
ice near Constitution Island the next Spring. He is
buried in the "Mt. Ave/Cedar St. Cemetery" in Cold Spring.
Amos' 7th child was George Washington Mosher, my ancestor,
and the 8th child was PLATT Mosher. Platt married
Mary L. Hankins and moved to Poughkeepsie.
We think Wm's father was Freegrace, but the lineage
gets a little shaky as we try to work our way back to one
of the Hughs. We think the family came out of France
(Alsace=Lorraine) and migrated to England before establishing at least 3 lines in America.

Re: Mosher in Putnam and Dutchess Counties, New York

My Mosher ancestors came from the Dutchess/Putnam Co. area.
William Mosher (1748-1832) was a soldier in the Rev. War and settled at "Breakneck." He was a stone mason, and thru my childhood some remains of the original home were visible.
We think that Wm's father was "Freegrace" who lived in
LI and then Cortlandt, NY. If so, Wm's brothers included
Nathaniel, Abel, and Issac.
I have been in touch with one of Abel's descendents, and
he claims to have traced the line back to France (Alsace-
Lorraine.) In the 1500s a "Hugh Mosher (or Mosier or Moger) migrated to Manchester, England. He either took
his 5 sons with him, or sired them in England. For the
next couple of generations, every son in the family had a "Hugh," so tracing them has been very difficult. One possibility is that one of Hugh's grandsons migrated to ME, and another to RI. We think our line went to ME and from there to LI, and from there up the Hudson River to Westchester Co., and then to Dutchess and Putnam Counties.
William's children were Coles, Amos, Miles, Charlotte, Phoebe, Elizabeth and Henry. Amos (1791-1850) remained at the family home and his children were Elizabeth Ann, Coles,
William Henry, Miles, Harrison, Salama, George Washington,
Platt, Anna Myra, and Charles. I am descended from
George Washington Mosher (1825-1911.) Amos was quite
a drinker and his desire to get more booze one November
nite cost him his life. Family legend says that his
sons "cut him off," and that he got in his boat to go
across the river to Cornwall. The boat showed up the
next day; his body was recovered the next Spring, in
the ice near Constitution Island. After his death,
and that of Harrison by the RR, his widow and children
moved to Nelsonville, near Cold Spring. Some of the
family lived on the other side of the mts., in the
"North Highlands," but there must have been a rift in
the family because that branch spells the name "Moshier"
and has no acknowledgement of a relationship. (My
grandfather remembered visiting a shoemaker relative on
the "other side of the mountain." ) There used to be
some Moshers in Beacon, near the Radio Station.
"The woods used to be full of Moshers," but when I applied in Cold Spring for a new birth certificate, and they spelled my mother's name as "Masher," I knew it was the end of an era.
Don't know if this helps you in any way, but if you
know of any connections, please let me know. I'm thinking
your line may be descended from one of William's children,
or from one of William's brother's children.
Judy Darcy

for mitcjlyons

Don't know Julia, but I wouldn't write her off as
"adopted" just because of the 7 year age difference. For
one thing, it's very possible that there were some children in between who died, and so weren't around for that census.
I have found several families whose children spanned 15 - 20+ years.
The patriarch of my family was William, who settled
in the Breakneck area of Dutchess (now Putnam) Co. after
serving in the REv. I'm descended from his son, Amos,
and his wife (Aimee)Jane Rinehart, who you found in the
1850 census. (Amos drowned later that year.) You also
found Amos' sons, WIlliam, b. 1817 and Miles, who
married sisters, Lavinia and Louisa Smith. Our family
records list Miles as having been born in 1819, and Louisa
as having been born in 1821. My family notes show
William and Miles to have been whalers; supposedly they both
moved West and had many descendents. ( I am descended from
another son of Amos, George Washington Mosher, b. 1825.)
None of our family records show a John Mosher born
as early as 1815. My guess is that he may have been the
son of a brother of Amos, perhaps Miles, b. in 1780s -90s,
d. 1849; married Jane Peck 1821, Mar.16 at the Dutch
Reformed Church in Fishkill, or of another Mosher family
altogether.
We think that William, the patriarch, moved from
Cortlandt, in Westchester Co. and that he had at least
3 brothers. One of them, Abel, was the ancestor of
a very knowledgeable man who now lives in Bradenton, FL,
William Mosher. He probably has records of the
children of the REv. War Wm's brothers. My uncle has been in touch with the FL WIlliam Mosher, for many years, and recently I got in touch with him. Unfortunately, he has been very ill lately (at age 87).
If you get in touch with me I will send his e-address
(don't have it handy right now.) My e-address
is jcwfrog@juno.com.
Good luck in the pursuit of Julia.
Judy Darcy

Re: Mosher in Putnam and Dutchess Counties, New York

Binney, Excellent family tree.

I trace my Mosher ancestors from Julia Mosher who married John VanBuskirk. In 1870, they lived in Phillipstown, Putnam County with son William who was 3. Julia Mosher is 22 in the 1870 census – born c. 1848

I have found a Julia Mosher in Phillipstown on the 1860 census who was born in 1848. I believe this is the same Julia. Her father is John Mosher (born c. 1815), mother Angeline (born c. 1824) and three siblings: Mary Mosher (born c. 1855), Charles Mosher (born c. 1857) and William Mosher (born c. 1859). A last son George (born c. 1862) shows up on a later census.

I think it is strange that Julia is 12 years old as of the 1860 census and her next oldest sibling is 5. It makes me wonder if she was adopted by John and Angeline. Also Angeline is an unusual name, but I didn’t see it in your family tree.

There is a Julia Mosher in the 1850 census. 3 years old with the family living in Fishkill. The family is:

Samul Mosher 40
Eliza Mosher 37
Hetty 16
Edgar 11
Phebe 10
Caroline 8
Americus 6
Julia 3
Martha 8 months

In the 1860 census and later I can’t reliably find Samuel (Samul) and Eliza. The members of this family seem dispersed, supporting my theory that Julia is not the natural daughter of John and Angeline. In 1860 Americus Mosher is living in East Fishkill with a family called Merrit, Martha Mosher, age 10 is living with a family named Crozier in Fishkill. There’s a Caroline Mosher living with the Bartons, also in Fishkill.

I also can’t match Samuel to your family tree. It is interesting to note that on the same 1850 census page as Samuel and family there is William Mosher (age 33, born c. 1817) and wife Lavinia (age 26). On the previous page is Amos Mosher (age 60) and wife Jane (61). Also Miles Mosher (age 26, born c. 1824) and Louisa (age 25, born c. 1825) and family. Miles and Louisa also have a son Augustus (born c. 1842) not shown on your tree.

My tracking of Julia Mosher is tenuous and guess work. Any thoughts on what I have presented would be welcome. Thank you.
Is Mary Mosher b. 1641 MA married to John Maxson, the sister of Hugh Mosher

Hi,

I have traced my family's line back to Mary Mosher b. 1641 MA, d. 1718 Westerly, RI and married Rev. John Maxson Jr. 1664. John Maxson's sister, Rebecca Maxson, married Hugh Mosher(1633-1713). Is Mary Mosher the sister of Hugh Mosher and, if so, who were their parents?

I have found several different names given for Hugh's parents and, since this is a new line for me, I am totally lost! I guess the first thing I need help with is if Mary is indeed Hugh's sister.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!
Sharon

Re: Is Mary Mosher b. 1641 MA married to John Maxson, the sister of Hugh Mosher

Shelly,

Thanks for your reply. I think that we are talking about two different Mary Moshers. I have a Mary Mosher born 1640 died 1718 who is the sister of Rev. Hugh Mosher (1632-1713)who was married to Rebecca Maxson. Rebecca Maxson is the sister of John Maxson who married the Mary Mosher (1640-1718) who was the sister of the Rev. Hugh Mosher. Thus Mary and Hugh Mosher are a sister and a brother who, in turn, marry a brother and a sister (i.e. John and Rebecca Maxson). That, of course, was very common at that time and even today. The Mary Mosher that you mention was born in 1672 and died 1748. She was the daughter of the Rev. Hugh Mosher and Rebecca Maxson. I haven't traced her to see who she married but if she were to have married John Maxson than she would have married her mother's brother, an unlikely scenario.

My original question actually had to do with the parents of Mary Mosher (1640-1718) and the Rev. Hugh Mosher (1632-1713). They are most likely sister and brother, but I have not been able to find any real data on their father nor agreement among researchers...actually a very healthy thing since it might prompt more research. While I think their father is probably Hugh Mosher (Sr) born about 1600 England that could well be wrong and his death date differs with almost every researcher. I am enough interested in this to think about taking a trip east in an attempt to try to find actual data.

Shelly, I would like to continue to exchange ideas and thanks again for your response.

Sharon
