Mahala (Branham), Adeline (Gearheart), and Nathaniel Mosley

First, though, I have a question. I know Nathaniel Mosley has a descendant (straight male lineage- son, to son, to son) who has taken part in a DNA test, BUT have Adeline's or Mahala's descendants done such? More specifically, have they tried to check their MTDNA through Mahala's mother's side? My suggestion is that we do so. You might be wondering why we should bother, since Nathaniel's side has been tested. I will get to that in a minute, but first I want to explain what I would like to see happen.

I would love to see Mahala's or Adeline's descendants get an MTDNA test. This person would need to descended through a straight female line down from Mahala or Adeline- but I THINK males can do this, too, as long as the people between them and Mahala or Adeline were all female. For example, Mahala's (or Adeline's) daughter's daughter. Or Mahala's/Adeline's daughter's daughter's daughter. Or Mahala's/Adeline's daughter's son. Or Mahala's/Adeline's daughter's daughter's son.

If someone would volunteer for this, I believe it merely requires a cheek swab- you just swab the inside of your cheek with the swab the company sends and send it back in. It's my understanding, your end of things will be fairly simple and I'm sure the kit should come with instructions. As for money, I understand some of you might not want to pay for such a test. I'll be honest, I don't have the cash to pay it all, either, BUT I know a lot of people who'd be interested in these results, myself included, so I was thinking that several of us could donate 5 or 10 bucks towards this goal. The total is $99 for the cheaper test. I already have several people in mind who might be willing to donate $10 a piece and one person who has confirmed they will pay. I still need to ask the other people if they'd be willing to pay, as I merely suspect they will say yes. And we still need a couple more people to donate. What do you all think? I would do the cheek swab on myself if I could, but I cannot since I am Nathaniel's descendant and don't have a straight female line back to his mother. If you would be willing to do the cheek swab and meet the requirments, but cannot donate any money towards the cost of the test, we could still prob. manage to get enough donations to buy it and hand the test to you. All I ask of the person who agrees to do the cheek swab is that they descend from Mahala or Adeline, have only females ancestors between them and Adeline (or Mahala), AND that they SHARE their DNA test results. My email listed here is not currently working. Please respond to this message and give me an email address where I can contact you. I will get up with you.

Now, here is why we need to test Mahala's and Adeline's descendants, despite Nathaniel having been tested:

The results of Nathaniel's haplogroup (haplogroups help- to some degree- to let us know where that line of ancestors came from) was in an R group of some sort. I think that was just the anticipated (not confirmed) haplogroup, but I might be wrong. Now, as far as I know, the R groups point to some European source being most likely. As many of you know, Nathaniel's family claimed to be part Cherokee. Mahala's family also claimed this. I'm unsure about Adeline's descendants, but these three are supposed to be siblings (full as far as I know). The results of Nathaniel's descendant's DNA test don't dispute the Cherokee heritage since most of us come from a whole lot of diff. places and have mixed heritage, and these results show one straight line of descent.

It's my understanding if you test Y-DNA (you can only get this from a male) it will only show you the straight male lineage. In other words it will show you Nathaniel's father's father's father's fathers' (and so on) line. It will go straight through the males as far back as it can. So, if Nathaniel's son's son (for example) had his YDNA tested, it would NOT show Nathaniel's wife's (Mary Polly Moore) side of the family tree. It would also not show Nathaniel's mother's side of the tree. It would show his dad's side, but not his paternal grandma's side. And so on. There is a lot we are missing here. If you do an MTDNA test, it will show a straight female line, but you can get this from a male or female as long as you are going in a straight line through the female ancestors.

If Nathaniel, Mahala, and Adeline are 1/2 Cherokee, it is possible one parent is full Cherokee and the other is none. This would make the kids half Cherokee. It is also possible that both parents are part Cherokee (for example, both parents could be 1/2 Cherokee). If Nathaniel's haplogroup is R something, then the Cherokee apparently doesn't go straight back through the males. There is a woman in the mix somewhere. So, I believe- and someone correct me if I'm wrong- Nathaniel's dad (although unconfirmed, I am going to say Henry) couldn't have been full Cherokee, because that would mean both Henry's parents were full Cherokee, and their parents were and so on and so on. In other words, Nathaniel's haplogroup wouldn't have come back R. So, assuming Nathaniel and his sisters are 1/2 Cherokee, this would mean that either BOTH of their parents were part Cherokee, or the mother was full Cherokee. IF both parents were part Cherokee, testing Mahala and Adeline may or may not confirm the Native heritage. For example, let's say Rebecca (I'm going with Rebecca as Nathaniel's mom just to keep from getting things too confusing here) was 1/2 Cherokee and Henry was, too. Let's say all of Rebecca's Cherokee heritage comes from her dad's side of the family..... the straight female line of descent is broken here, and testing Mahala's and Adeline's MTDNA still will not prove the Native heritage. HOWEVER, IF there is a straight female line of descent, of even part of Mahala's and Adeline's Cherokee heritage, it WILL show up when testing their descendants MTDNA. If Rebecca is only part Cherokee, it is possible- though not necessarily so- that there is a straight line of female descent, BUT IF Rebecca was full Cherokee, then testing her descendant's MTDNA should definitely show Native descent. At least, this is my rudimentary understanding.

So, basically, what I am saying is, this may or may not prove the Native American descent, BUT it will show a diff. line than we looked at when testing Nathaniel's descendant's YDNA. I for one would like to give it a try and see if this shows Native ancestry. Whoever is interested, please leave me a message below. Again, my email is currently down, so I will not get an email reply. I plan to check back here. If someone leaves me a comment about being interested, I will post another email address and we will set up contact, and try to get this thing rolling. Thanks.

Mosley Moseley 1830-1850 Newton Co GA

this is introduction to full details posted on Newton Co GA
locality Board at www.rootsweb.com
--
and slightly more details at Moseley surname Board
============================
14 july 2009
BTW-for comparison sake,
Way below here I announce posting of Moseleys who arrived in Newton Co GA before 1850--about the time your Moseley kin were leaving for AL.
Notice that they had a William Matthew Mosley born 1834 who was of Newton Co GA by 1850. Probably some connection of your Moseley kin to those, since an earlier William Matthew Moseley is asserted to be father of a Newton Co. GA Moseley son during 1830's (but DISCREPANCY = no close confirmation of that in US censuses) --asserted in
[this is duplication for both Patricia and Bo of what I said yesterday, but bears repeating for the record because the unique name William Matthew Mosley has (in fowarded family way below here) been again confirmed now for only my 2nd time ever--and both instances associated with Newton Co. GA !!

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
does not list a daughter Louisa; although it's pretty sketchy.
It says:
ID: I306
Name: William Matthew Moseley
Sex: M
Occupation: Farmer
Burial: Athens, Claiborne Parish, La. ?
Note: Cause of Death: Old age?

Father: Joseph A. Moseley

Marriage 1 Spouse Unknown
Children
William G. Moseley b: NOV 12 1836 in Newton County, Georgia ??
Matthew Moseley b: in Newton County, Georgia ??
Thomas Moseley b: in Newton County, Georgia ??
Rosa Moseley b: in Newton County, Georgia ??
Elizabeth Moseley b: in Newton County, Georgia ??
Julia Moseley b: in Newton County, Georgia ??
Mort Moseley b: in Newton County, Georgia ??
[for Patricia's benefit, I note that I also tried to compile the Following Newton Co. GA family also on http://new.familysearch.org which is not yet publicly accessible, but is supposed to become publicly accessible next year sometime as part of
familysearch.org ]
----- Original Message -----
From: Warren Forsythe (Moseley genealogy non-Norfolk families)
To: Judith Morris
Sent: Monday, July 13, 2009 10:24 PM
Subject: newton Co GA mosleys posted

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...
is my first attempt to post you awesome bible record on internet for communication to and form your remote cousins

There might be a little additional information here for you, form the LDS Salt Lake family trees, and you might want to correct some of my poor guesswork:
1.Joseph C (Mosley_inBible) MOSELEY (Elijah Rev.

Hi Diane. I am Willma Slone Hill. My mother is Irene Mosley. Her father is Tom Mosley. His dad is Clabe Mosley. So, Clabe is my great grandfather. I remember him when visiting as a little girl. He was 102 when he died. I met some cousins in April of this year. (My mother's sister's girls.) This cousin and I tried to play catchup for 30 years plus. She was proud of her cherokee heritage and even went to Minnesota and North Dakota to check out certain reservations. she was so excited that when she got home to alabama, she sent in her DNA to try to get an exact Indian tribe to be sure it was Cherokee. However, big surprise. There was not one drop of Indian blood....it is african american. My mother did not want to discuss this subject as of yet. But, maybe she will. Interested in your comments. Willma
