Marriage to a Moss

My great-Aunt Ruth T. Woods married a Jerome Moss about 1931/4 but I can't find out where !! I know that he had property in Callaway County, Missouri (Fulton) back then but I can't find any record of him. I believe he may have been from Missouri ... she worked for him before their marriage, as his housekeeper, this from my Aunt who remembers staying with them in Fulton for a while about 1934.
Anyone with a link to this Jerome Moss ????
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kathy
Re: Moss and Ellis Families of South Carolina

Nadine, We are also looking for the parents of Joseph Moss born 1797 most likely in York Co., SC. Since his wife's family (Abner and Ann Ellis) was in York Co., SC. I think Joseph's family was living there also. My husband descends from Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy"(Ellis) Moss's son, Amos Hugh Moss. My husband did DNA testing for the Moss Line, as far as we can tell from the results, he matches with the Gilbert Moss line in York Co., SC. Just wish there was some way of finding which ones was Joseph's parents. So far I have found there were 3 Ellis family members to mary into the Moss family in York Co. SC. I think you would have better luck, looking in York Co., SC. The last we know of Joseph and Elizabeth Moss, they were still living in 1880 in Meigs Co. TN. Trying to find where they are buried. Good Luck Shelia

Hi,

I have 3 George W Moss in my direct line. One would be of age to have fought in the Civil War. I have him living in Jackson County, Alabama at this time but I have nothing on him after 1858/1960. He could have leftto go to PA to fight on the Northern side. No idea but he could be from PA. He had wife and 4 children here. No stories passed down as to his disappearance. One of my Aunts said he father (his son) never talked of his father nor did the wife/mother. During this time it is possible that wife and her family did not discuss him if he did leave the south to fight for the north. No way of being sure of anything unless paperwork showed him living here. It would be something to all of a sudden find him after all this time. He was my great-grandfather.

I know that he had property in Callaway County, Missouri (Fulton) back then but I can't find any record of him. I believe he may have been from Missouri ..and that she worked for him before their marriage as a housekeeper, this from my Aunt who remembers staying with them in Fulton for a time.
Anyone with a link to this Jerome A. Moss ????
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kathy
memere2six@aol.com

I am very interested in the text version of the David Moss family you mentioned. Is it possible for me to obtain a copy?

I am researching the ancestors of Daniel Burford Moss, b. abt 1806 in VA or NC, m. Manerva Adkisson in TN, (my GGgrandparents), died in Lamar Co. TX. Daniel's father was David Moss, b. abt 1770, VA.

I would greatly appreciate any help.

Doris

Can you tell me how you know Harvey was born in Sheffield?
I don't know Harvey's ancestors yet -

The family was living in Washington Township, Ripley County Indiana in 1850. I found a book, "The Indiana Annual Register and Pocket Manual" of 1846, listing Harvey Moss as a Justice of the Peace, in Washington Township from Feb 14,1842.

Harvey bought 81.68 acres of ground in Dearborn County, from the US General Land Office, in Cincinnati, Ohio, 16 Oct 1835.

Wow - thanks for sharing your photo! From the rest of your post, I am puzzled. Do you have a different marriage date than I have, or perhaps was Elizabeth, Harvey's second wife?
It appears there were children born before the marriage date 25 July 1833 in Dearborn Indiana posted to this site:
http://genealinks.com/records/records082.htm I haven't confirmed this information.

Also, the Iowa Census 1854 in Muscatine shows a family of
Harvey Moss with 2 voters and 2 Militia. I only know of Levi S. Moss who served in the 44th Iowa Infantry Civil War - and don't know of the other.

Is it possible for you to share the document you have? The iinfo my aunt gave me only shows 10 children.
Lisa - Sorry about the delay--Comcast went off line--I don't know anybody now with the surname Moss.

I have a 2nd great granduncle named Nathaniel Moss Salley. There are no Moss's in his background, unless we count his grandfathers wife, Mary Keziah Wright, who was married to Stephen Moss before she married John Salley. The Moss's come later into my background--my great grandfather married Rebecca Louise Moss--so Mary Keziah Wright appears twice in my family tree.

Nathaniel Moss Salley could have been named after your Nathaniel Moss--just a possibility, particularly if your Nathaniel's father was Stephen Moss.

Have a fine afternoon.
I have a short typed document titled Harvey Moss Genealogy that is my source. I don't know the author but it appears to have been created about 1971 given the latest date. It came to me from my Great Aunt, a granddaughter of Rebecca Moss. In the list of his 13 children, the first two were born in 1828 in Franklin T. Ohio, and the balance in various locations in Indiana between 1831 and 1851.

By the way, I have a picture of him which I have attached.

I think it is possible that a lot of families in Scotland in the 1600s named their son "Robert Bruce" (after the king) like Americans later named theirs "George Washington". So the name connections in our trees may be coincidental if that is the case. But who knows? have you participated in the DNA projects? I have done so but among the dna matches I have not found a family tree connection, yet.
Thanks,
Gerald

Very interesting stuff, Gerald. My Stephen Moss came to SC from VA in about 1760 and died on a trip back there in about 1770 or so. His widow, Mary Keziah Wright, married John Salley in about 1775. She is in my tree twice, since my great grandfather George Bull Salley married Rebecca Louise Moss, his ½ 2nd cousin.

Donald Bruce is also in my tree. He was born in Scotland about 1742, and died in SC. His daughter Jane married Samuel Phillips Jones, parents-in-law of George Elmore Salley, son of John Salley.

With these names in common, they could be related.

What do you think?

Thanks, and have a fine day.
Richard and Mamie Moss

Wondering if anyone out there is related to my great-grandparents. Richard and Mamie Moss, they are from West Virginia. They had two sons, Wilbur N. and LA. Mamie lived in Montgomery WV until she was moved to a nursing home where she passed away. I was interested if anyone knew anything about her father who was full-blooded Indian. I have an old tin pic of him, and I was always told that he was a Cherokee. I also have several pics of my great-grandmother Mamie, and was fortunate enough to know her before she passed.
