Looking for my father. Can you help?

I am looking for my father. I only know a few things about him and that is what makes this search very difficult.
His name is Herbert L. Motley, or Leonard Herbert Motley. I am not totally sure. All I know is he worked at FoodTown Supermarket in Gary, Indiana when the store was located on 20th and Ohio. I was born in October of 1961 and never saw or knew my father. My name is T. L. Hartfiel and my mother's name was Ida Jean Tolbert and she/we lived in Gary during my childhood. Does anyone have any information about my father? I think he should be in his late 60s or early 70s if he is still alive. I would love to know if I have an extended family as well. Any information will be very helpful. Please send your correspondence to: tamroncandies@hotmail.com Thank you for your help.

Yes, we are certainly related. I was born and raised in Newark. My father is Jim Motley and I heard him talk about Uncle Buddy. He said Uncle Buddy was the one that told him the family history. My Jim Motley's father is Freddie, son of Jessie and James Freddie Motley. From what I was told, Jessie was already a Motley when she married my great grandfather.

So yes, that makes us cousins.

Your letter shows that we know the same people. I have relatives in Newark, NJ that I am in touch with. The Hill Motley I am referring to we call him Uncle Buddy. Uncle Buddy had a brother name Otis Motley who died a few years ago. He lived in Inkster, MI. He also had a sister name Ophelia and Fletcher and one name Lucille. I am a decendant of their older brother, John Henry Motley who died back in 1930. If you are familiar with these people, then we are definitely related.
Dianne

Hi Dianne,

From what I heard from family stories passed down, a man named Broadnax bought some slaves in Maryland. At some point on his way to Alabama, he sold some of his slaves to a Motley, probably Robert. Motley then took his slaves to Alabama. One of them was given the slave name Titus. The census says his wife was Anna. They had Perry, my great-great-great-grandfather and at least two other kids. I have a picture of Perry. He bought a large plot of land in Autauga which is no longer in the family but there are still a lot of roads there named Motley.

Anyway, Perry had Lee (or maybe James Lee), who had James Freddie, who had Freddie, who had Jimmie, who had me. Of course, there's a lot of other people in that line. I took a dna test and my paternal line goes back to Africa. Of course that doesn't confirm that it was in fact Titus who came off the boat, but it is consistent with the family story that a man came off the boat, had sons who had sons that eventually came to my generation.

Hi,

John Motley and Hattie Motley had my great-grand mother Jessie. They also had a son John, which could be your grandfather but the census has him being born in 1904, which would make him only 10 when Hilliard is born. Of course I've seen many mistakes in the census records but we both come from a John and Hattie Motley in Autauga, Alabama. Also, your dad's brothers and sisters have the same names as their aunt's and uncles from John and Hattie, so I believe that makes us cousins since so many people back then named their kids after the generation that came before them.

I'm curious to know how you know John's father Tom came from Ghana and that Hattie's mother came from Kenya? Were these stories passed down to you? And did they give any of their African names? Like Hattie, I also come from two different lines of Motleys from Autauga and I have heard a few stories and one about a Motley who came right off the boat.

I got my information from Larry Motley and Linda Pasley, so I can't say I've done the research myself. I have that Henry Motley was born in 1703 in St. Anne's Parish in Essex County, Vriginia and died in 1775 in the Crabtree District, Wake County, North Carolina.

They say that he married Hannah Andrews in 1733 in St. Anne Parish and that she had been married to William Cook, who died before then. Hannah was born about 1708 and died about 1740.

I also have that Thomas was born about 1735.

J

My name is Stacy Green. My father was Daniel R Motley. His father was Albert Motley...Fitzugh's brother. I actually met him once with my grandmother Emma Motley. We went there to visit. Thomas Jefferson Motley was married to Rainey North. She is the one believed to be Cherokee. Betty Hall was actually Thomas Jefferson Motley's mother. I have found records of Thomas Jefferson and Rainey North at a cemetary there around DeValls Bluff. I also have census records of Thomas and Rainey. They were miss read at first as Molley. The writing was bad and it is hard to read. I know that Betty Hall was living with her parents by the Thomas was just a few years old. I do not know who Thomas' dad is but I do know that his father was born in Virginia. I also have a photo from my grandmother of the whole Motley family at their home in DeValls Bluff. It has Albert (my grandfather), Glenn, Fitzugh, Cash, Thomas Jefferson, Rainey, and I believe Rainey's mother Cherry and another man I believe to be an Uncle of Thomas'. They had a sister that died at an early age, and she is in the pitcure as well. If you have more information would you mind sharing with me?

I cannot identify this Motley branch; however, this may help. The Madison Co. marriage license for the marriage to Amelia K. Brumfield was dated 25 April 1850. That same year Thomas Motley took out a license to marry Julia Ann Richardson on 17 Dec. 1850. If Madison Co., KY has Census records for 1850, you can find out where these two men were born, since this info is recorded on the 1850 records.

Joseph Motley,II married Martha Ellington first, and she was the mother of all his children. Elizabeth Irby was his second wife and had no children. Martha co-signed a deed in Amelia Co. on 6 May 1780, and I believe that they moved to Pittsylvania Co. soon thereafter where she was killed by a Tory. Joseph obtained a Halifax Co. license to remarry on 24 June 1782, and this date can fairly accurately pinpoint the date of Martha's death (1781), since it was a custom to wait one year before remarrying. I understand that the DAR has the inaccurate record that Martha was killed by Indians. Surely there were none in Amelia Co. by then, but very likely many in Pittsylvania Co which was the frontier in the 1780's.

There are many listings of Motley/Mottleys’ from numerous locations throughout Ireland. There are listings of Motleys' from as early as the mid 1600’s. The majority of the listings are from Dublin. There are also Motleys’ originating from Scotland with a derivation of the name to be “Motlow”. (Off topic) the proprietor of Jack Daniel’s whiskey is Lem Motlow.

My family line is purported to have emigrated from Ireland prior to the American Revolutionary war. My direct ancestor “Walter Motley” fought for the state of Pennsylvania and was taken prisoner of war, and died in the state of New York. His father’s name was Patrick. I haven’t been able to trace my line back across the Atlantic yet, but hope to do so in the future.

Also, Mr. Thomas Motley-Freeman compiled many military records of the Motleys’ who participated on both sides of the Civil War. Mr. Freeman created and administered “The American Motley Association” for many years. I think you should be able to find copies of his publications in some genealogical library.

Regards,
Stephen Motley
Salt Lake City, Utah
Hi Connie, this is your cousin Dianne from Prattville. As you know, my mother, Bessie is the daughter of John Henry Motley, the older brother of your father Hillard. She had brothers Jessie Motley and Willie Motley.

The Hillard that I am researching is on my father's side. Hill was born around 1836. I am also a Motley-Motley from my mother and my father. My great grandfather was Hill Motley. He had sons Jimmy, John, Joe and Jay Motley. He was married to Louella Golson in the 1880 census. My grandfather is Jimmy Motley. Hill had a brother named Eli Motley. I have found some decendants of Eli Motley but finding decendants of Hill Motley's sons John, Joe, and Jay is difficult. I do know that in the 1940's a lot of families left Autauga county and moved to Birmingham, AL to work in the steel mills. Therefore, we have lost touch with them, I am hoping that if someone out there read this information, maybe we can find some of their decendants.

But it was good hearing from you!!!

Love, your cousin,
Dianne from Prattville
We have found some conflict to the birthdate of a few years but all the other family information is the same. My father was Mervin Motley, son of Donald Motley, son of Lawrence Motley, son of James Motley, son of John Motley. If you could please send me any information that you have regarding this side of the Motley tree I would really appreciate it.
My condolences.

Incidentally, do you have any connection with a Francis Motley born 1857 in Leeds, England, who worked in Calcutta India as a Master
ariner, and who emigrated to Vancouver, via Battleford, Saskatchewan?

Francis had married a Kathleen Bowen in Calcutta, India in 1882 but she died in 1895 in India. Francis had remarried to a Juliet Butler in 1897 in India and they arrived in Canada around 1903 with children Gladys, Margaret, Kathleen, Francis, Irene and John, all born Calcutta by 1st wife, and Lewis Osborn by 2nd wife.

We have traced some of the family around Vancouver but there are others who are lost to us at the moment.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Regards
Simon Bowen

Trying to locate a Thomas Motley that married my gggrandmother NJD Allen in Missouri in 1878. She would have been a widow of John Allen, and my family records show she died in 1889, but do not know where. Thomas was her second marrige...

Does this fit with any of your family records?
Thanks a lot
