DES MOINES - Ralph L. Mott, 81, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at the Carlisle Care Center.
Services at the Merle Hay Funeral Home. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery with a military service by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9662.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Carlisle Care Center.
Mr. Mott was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Harold and Grace Streeter Mott. He married Mabel Webb Knowlton on Aug. 8, 1958.
He retired from Super Valu Stores after 32 years as a truck driver. He and his wife then retired to Missouri. He was on the volunteer fire department in Edwards, Mo. for 16 years. They returned to Des Moines in 1999 to be closer to family.
He enjoyed camping and fishing with the family and especially took great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended Wakonda Christian Church and enjoyed his Thursday morning coffee with the guys.
He was a World War II veteran, wounded twice.
Survivors include his wife; stepdaughters, Anita Waterman of Des Moines and Jackie German and husband Dave of Mount Pleasant; a stepson, Bob Knowlton and wife Carlie of Bondurant; sisters, Donna Hepker and husband Hubert of Letts and Tuddy England of Clarence; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie; his parents; two sisters, Mary and JoAnn; a son-in-law, Dale; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey; a nephew, Steven; and a great-great granddaughter, Cadence.
