Hi Steph, My name is Geraldine/Gerry (nee-Mott/Clements)Sookorukoff now. My grandparents were Reuben Mott and Pheobe Swartout. I have been researching this family for almost 20 yrs. now. I have a lots of old pictures on different lines of the Mott clan.I don't don't how John Corless died but I do have their marriage cert. and a burial fund that John and Catherine had for their children. All I know is that he died and she came with John's Parents in 1846 from Liverpool. My grandma had their marriage cert. If you like we can exchange info and pictures. I can even invite you to my ancestry.com family site. So,is your husband related to Catherine and John, or Catherine and Moses?? Geraldine

Mott, died Saturday morning at 8:15 o’clock at her home two miles east of town. Death resulted from pneumonia. Mrs. Mott had been ill only since last Monday and few people knew that her condition was critical until the news of her death was announced.
Mrs. Mott was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Hendrix, of Wilkes county, and was 65 years of age. In their early married life Dr. and Mrs. Mott lived in Catawba county. They moved to Statesville in the early 70s and since then they had lived in and near the town, moving to their country home 18 to 20 years ago. The deceased was an energetic business woman, who took an active interest in her home affairs. She was possessed of many excellent qualities and was held in high esteem by those who knew her. She was the mother of nine children, W. W. Mott and Mrs. Florence Cowles, died several years ago, and one died in infancy. Those who survive are; M. L. Mott, of Muscogee, Indian Territory, attorney for the Creek Indians; Mrs. Jno. M. Sharpe, who lives near Statesville; Jas. Mott, of Statesville; John H. Mott, of Anacortes, Wash.; Mrs. C. E. Dr. Mott has also been ill with pneumonia but his recovery is hoped for. All of Mrs. Mott’s children were with her in illness except Messrs. M. L. and John H. Mott and Mrs. Parlier. The latter arrived Saturday night. In addition to the children two grandchildren, Misses Florence and Carrie Cowles, early left motherless and reared by their grandmother, suffer in Mrs. Mott’s death the loss of a mother.
Mrs. Mott was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church. The rector of the parish, Rev. E. L. Ogilby, being too ill to officiate at the funeral, the services were conducted by Rev. Jas. H. Pressly at the family residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock and the remains were interred at Oakwood.
Dr. Walter Baker Mott:

THE LANDMARK, STATESVILLE, N. C.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1922
Mr. McDowell Writes of Dr. Mott---
One of Iredell’s Greatest Men.
Charlotte Observer.
Mecklenburg, Iredell and other counties in this section will read with keenest interest the following sketch of Dr. Walter Mott, by his lifelong friend, Mr. F. B. McDowell.
In former years Dr. Mott was a frequent visitor to Charlotte. He was known throughout western North Carolina as one of three brothers --- “The Motts,” as they were always referred to --- one of whom, Dr. James J. Mott, was called “The Iron Duke.”
“The Motts” were dominant factors in the political, medical and social life of lower Iredell.
Mr. McDowell writes interestingly of Dr. Mott and his brothers as follows:
“Dr. Walter Baker Mott died at his home at Mount Mourne, October 23---his birthday---in the 87th year of his age.
“His father, Joseph W. Mott, a well-known Episcopal minister, who once had a charge in Charlotte, Lenoir and other places in this section of the state, came to North Carolina in 1830, from Nova Scotia. He married Susan Philips, of Hillsboro, this State. Three sons survived them; The late Dr. James J. Mott, of Statesville, Dr. Walter B. Mott, of Mt. Mourne, and Dr. Henry Y Mott, also of Mt. Mourne. All three were physicians of clear intellect, courtly manners, clean lives and the highest order of courage, and in all difficulties that arose where they were living, they always took the part of the oppressed and weaker man.
“Dr. Walter B. Mott studied medicine under the celebrated Dr. Pinckney Caldwell, of Charlotte, father of Mrs. Kate Guion. He volunteered in May, 1861, in the Beattie’s Ford riflemen, and was in the Battle of Seven Pines, where so many members of that splendid company were killed. After the disbandment of the company, Dr. Mott went to Yorktown, joined the fifth North Carolina regiment, became surgeon and served three years. He married Margaret White, of Iredell County, and had nine children, most of whom are married and are living West.
“All three of the brothers were men of the courtliest manners, all high-toned gentlemen, and their personality and tall, handsome manly figures would attract attention in any group of men in any country.
“Fourteen years ago Dr. W. B. Mott had a stroke of paralysis, while living in Charlotte, and being a doctor, he would point to the portion of the head where the clot of blood was located, but was never able to speak, but his mind was clear as ever, he retained his wonderful memory, and the grip of his right hand was firm and friendly as when in his full powers. He was an athletic man of powerful build, was temperate, of good habits, and a splendid doctor. He was the family physician of the late Robert I. McDowell and others, and had a wide and splendid practice. He has left behind him a stainless life, the record of a valiant soldier and a kind and courtly gentleman.
“The only mistake his friends think that he ever made was in not going to a large city, where he would have had a wider field for the display of his splendid ability.”
PAGE THREE THE LANDMARK, STATESVILLE, N. C. MONDAY, AUGUST 18, 1924.
FUNERAL FOR DR. HENRY MOTT.
Conducted at Davidson Presbyterian Church by Bishop E. A. Penick----Was “Southern Gentleman,” Loved and Honored by All Who Knew Him.
By J. A. B. Goodman.
Mooresville, Aug, 15, --- The funeral of Dr. Henry Yeoman Mott, who died at his home near Mt. Mourne early Thursday morning, aged 83 years, will be held at Davidson Presbyterian church this afternoon at 4 o’clock, conducted by Bishop E. A. Penick, of Charlotte. The active pallbearers are: Barron Mills, Lathan Mills, Eugene Fink, William Johnston, Spurgon Moss and Carl Thompson. Honorary --- J. P. Mills, Sr., J. R. Withers, Dr. Geo. W. Taylor, Dr. W. D. McLelland, J. A. White, Dr. Reid Morrison, C. P. McNeely and W. B. Barnett.
Dr. Henry Mott, as he was so familiarly known, was a true type of the old-time Southern gentleman, a manly, erect figure, a man loved and honored by all who knew him.
Born June 1, 1841, at Flat Rock, Henry Yeoman Mott was a son of an Episcopal minister and his wife, Rev. and Mrs. T. S. W. Mott. Dr. Mott’s father, who was a member of a prominent Canadian family, who came to the South many years ago, was the founder of the old St. John’s Church-In-The-Wilderness at Flat Rock and of the Episcopal church at Valle Crucis.
Henry Yeoman Mott, then a young man of 20 years, entered the Confederate army as a cavalry private at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was known as a gallant and courageous soldier, serving throughout the entire four years of the war, carrying his commission in his pocket and serving in the cavalry ranks as a soldier instead of an officer. For a while he was aide to General D. H. Hill.
Just after the war, Dr. Mott married Miss Roxana Smith, of Lincoln county, who died about 15 months ago. His wife was a member of a prominent family of Lincoln county. Her father was the director of the Little Mountain Iron Works of the Confederate government, an important unit during the war.
Dr. Mott attended Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, after the war. His two older brothers had been graduated from this institution. After his graduation, Dr. Mott returned to his home to take up the practice of medicine. He became one of the outstanding physicians of this section. His practice extended over Lincoln and Iredell counties and over part of northern Mecklenburg county.
Dr. Mott was one of three brothers, all of whom became physicians, and all of whom lived to the age of 83 years. The eldest brother, Dr. J. J. Mott, of Statesville, died four or five years ago, and the brother, Dr. Walter B. Mott, of near Davidson, died two years ago. Dr. Henry Y. Mott lived on his plantation near Davidson.
Surviving Dr. Mott are one son and three daughters. The son, Harry Yeoman Mott, is the youngest of the children, and lives at the family home near Davidson. The daughters who survive are Mrs. John B. Alexander, of Charlotte; Mrs. W. C. Mebane, of Wilmington, and Mrs. John James, of Charlotte. One son and one daughter of Dr. Mott are dead. T. S. W. Mott died in 1898 and Mrs. J. R. Anderson died in 1910.
I do not have a lot of documentation, but Major William Mott is supposedly the grandfather of my great, great grandfather, Joshua Mott, born in 1791 in Coram, New York. Joshua's father was said to be William's son, Jacob. During the revolution William and Jacob served in the Continental army, William as an officer and Jacob as an enlisted, "minute" man. I have heard that William was the 7th son of a 7th son and both William and Jacob are said to have had many other children. If you have had many other responses, I would like to know more as well. I may have some information on the Major's parents, put together by a friend of the family now deceased, but I will have to look through some storage boxes to find it. That will be a project that will take some time, but I may go looking one of these days and let you know what I find.

Arthur Mott m. to Anna Barbara Palmer

Searching for death date (and possible divorce date) for Arthur Mott who was married to Anna Barbara Palmer c. 1934. I have little info on Arthur Mott other than family knowledge of Anna Barbara's marriage and a 5 Dec 1934 Huntingdon County Daily News (PA) newspaper stating Mr and Mrs Arthur Mott visited her brother and sister-in-law. Believe they married between 1930-34 as in 1930 Anna was unmarried living with her mother in Detroit. Have not found a marriage record in PA or MI. Anna's family records indicate Arthur Mott served in WWI, was gassed and in feeble health.

Mr. Mott:

My great, great grandparents were Phillip Mott and Margaret Streicher. I do not know if they are the same people about which you refer. They lived on a farm outside Ottumwa, Iowa (Wapello County). Both Phillip and Margaret were born in Baden, Germany although I not aware they knew each other prior to emigrating to the U.S.

The dates I have for them is Phillip being born in 1831 and dying in 1915. Margaret was born in 1836 and dying in 1906. They were married in 1872.

I would appreciate any information you might have. I do have some information about Margaret's parents and some additional information from a 1914 biography of Phillip. The dates that I have given you come from the biography and also from their gravestones.

Re: James F. Mott

I have found a death certificate for a James F Mott, who's date of death is listed as 17 Jul 1913. Birth year was estimated as 1837. He died in the State Hospital in St Joseph, MO, but his usual place of residence was listed as Salisbury, MO. Listed as a contributory factor in his death was senile dementia. His body was returned to Salisbury for burial. I am sure that is James Franklin Mott, son of James Riley Mott, one of the three brothers that I refer to in an earlier posting. According to my research James Franklin was married twice, once to Lucinda Ray in 1863 with 2 known children, and to Luvina L Todd in 1877 with 4 known children. This James would be the brother of my 2nd g-grandmother, Nancy Jane Mott. Nancy's daughter, Laura B Finnell, married William Walker Mott, James's 1st cousin once removed. Laura and William are my great grand parents. (I think I got that straight....any way Laura and William were 2nd cousins). I have more on these Motts who removed from VA, to Ky, and then to MO in about 1825. You may email me directly for more details.

A decade later I'll put this info/dubious answer out for speculation. Very little of it is specifically footnoted, so remember that much of this is "family legend" that MAY have some basis in fact, or maybe not.
Orange (Loammia) MOTT married Heathy HILLMAN in @ 1814. One of their sons, Loammia Orange MOTT, b. 1823 (to be henceforth designated LOM1823) married 1) Mary Jane BOATMAN, with one live birth (Sye B. MOTT) and @ 3 stillborns. This Mary Jane died in @ 1851 and is buried alongside her babies and parents in Laurel Cemetery, Clermont County, OH. LOM1823 then married a widow, Mary Jane (WHEELER) ALLEN who also already had a young son by her 1st husband, Robert ALLEN, named Winfield Scott ALLEN, b. @ 1849. Additional children from this second marriage of LOM1823 and MJ(W,A) MOTT are:
2A) Loammia Orange MOTT, Jr., b. 30 SEP 1854, d. 04AUG1933
+ Cecilia Ann JEFFRIES, b. 26/27 AUG 1854/56, d. 04 JAN 1920
2B) Mary (Jane?) MOTT, b. @ 1856, d.? (AFTER 1936)
+ 1) Lewis Cass WRIGHT; lived in Carroll Co., MO
+ 2) _______ CLAPPER; lived in Norborne, Carroll Co., MO
2C) Joseph Daniel MOTT, b. 29 MAR 1860, d. 20 MAR 1939
+ Lydia Ann WHEATON, b. 24 MAY 1861, d. 16 NOV 1932
Maybe this hint will lead someone to a new avenue of research. My family line is through Joseph Daniel, so my concentration has been biased. If you are interested, I can probably come up with some actual documentation. If you have contradictory information, I’d love to hear about that also.
Best wishes.
JLM

Just saw him 2 weekends ago at my mom's 70th bday party. John Lisotto is Valerie's husband. He too was at the party. It is all thanks to Valerie's post we found each other and now John is reunited with the Mott side of his family. John is Geraldine's son. My great grandfather was Sam, his wife Gertrude...I didn't know Gertrude, I knew his second wife, Ethel.
I just saw this. I am Jeanne Mott. (divorced and took back maiden name) My sister is also Linda Mott. Dr. John James Mott was my great, great grandfather. My great grandfather was Marshall Lockhart Mott. So your husband and I are cousins I guess.
jeannemott@bellsouth.net

Ok to all of you who have responded to my orignal post about hte album. I a m no being evasive, however, I am leaving on a genealogy trek Sunday from KC to VT. Cant wait. It is on my maternal line. Kind of a bucket list trip. I promise when I get back I will scan some of these photos and try to get specific names. Mott photos are of no interest to me, ie not in my line but there are some photos of Treff girls in the album and I can't for the life of me find a connection. Most photos were taken in Salsbury, some in Leavenworth, KS. My husband's grand parents had this album. IF you all don't hear from me by the first of NOv. give me a prod. i really need to find homes for these photos. Diane

The timing and names sound right for this bride to be a daughter of Orange (L.) Mott (born @ 1789) and Heathy/Hethy Hillman.

Check the marriage certificate. My notes indicate that Rev. ORANGE MOTT performed the ceremony for his daughter to marry James Snider in 1842 in Clermont County, Ohio. In 1870 Orange's heirs are shown as owners on Herman Fagley's Atlas. Mrs. Mott (Heathy) is said to own 664 acres and 2 homes or sets of buildings on land near Ten Mile Creek.

Orange Mott died in 1869 in Ray County, MO, and Heathy lived about another ten years. I have never traced the Snider line, but I hope this gives you a bit of info that might help. Some cohorts may be FAGIN, DONOVAN, DONHAM, HALL, BOATMAN, all in Clermont County, OH.

JLM in NM

Nancy....Three Mott brothers (Stokely, Ridon, and James Riley) moved from KY to MO during the early 1820's: Stokely to Howard Co (just across the Chariton/Howard county line); Ridon to Randolph Co then to Macon Co: and James Riley in Chariton Co just north of Stokely. Salibury, MO is a few mile to the NW of James Riley's Farm. Are you related to these Motts. They and their descendants are the only Motts in that area of MO to my knowledge. A James F Mott, a descendant of James Riley, was living in Salibury a few years ago. Are you related to one of these brothers. If so I would like to talk to you soon. I have alot data and questions on these families. I descend thru Stokely.
Let me know. Can't figure out why grandma had this beautiful album. Keep trying to compare photos in it to photos of family. I have to look, but it seems one of the Mott's was in Leavenowrth on a census for a short period of time. My line that this album would be connected to could be one of the following surnames: Treff; Storm; Zapp; Litchen; Bornhauser; Frohn; Witt Those reading this post. Get back with me in November. I am currently working on another liine and will be leaving KC for Vermont at the end of the month. After that trip I am going to consider my work on that line finished, except for things that may just fall in my lap. Got to stop somewhere, so I can do more on other lines. SOme of the persons in this album are identified, I will be happy to give those photos to direct descendants. Would rather give entire album if it fits closely to someone. I CAN'T keep all this stuff. Diane in KC **While checking your lines keep Leavenworth KS in mind that has to be the common thread

The thread title is James F. Mott, but the funeral publication says John F. Mott?

I have information of Mott families in Caldwell, Ray, Carroll, Chariton (where Salisbury is located), Scotland, Knox, Macon and Schuyler counties, but I'm not sure which name (John or James) you intended.

That photo album would be a very special item for the family involved.
Re: Wayne Mott, Missouri, born in 1920's,lived in Illinois

Wayne B. Mott (b. 18JUN1915) of Braymer, Caldwell County, MO is the greatgrandson of Loammia Orange Mott (LOM1823), the grandson of Loammia Orange Mott (LOM1854) and Cecilia Ann (Jeffries) Mott, and I thought he was the only child of Loammia Orange Mott (LOM1880) and Pearl Johnson Mott. Wayne died in 1986 and is buried at McBee Chapel, south of Braymer MO, alongside his parents. He had operated a grist mill in Braymer, but I just don't know about any marriage or children.
Family records indicate that LOM1854 was born in Ohio to LOM1823 and mother Mary Jane (nee Wheeler) (widow of Robert Allen) Mott. LOM1823 was previously married to MARY JANE BOATMAN (b. OH, 1827) and he was raising their only surviving son, Sye B. Mott, born 1847. MJWAMott brought her only child to this marriage, Winfield Scott Allen, and the boys did well together.

The grave of Mary Jane (Boatman) Mott (d.19SEP1851) is in Laurel Cemetery near Batavia, Clermont County, OH, alongside 3 graves that are their other (stillborn? unnamed infant?) children and in the same cemetery as her parents, Mr & Mrs. SYE Boatman. The Boatman family Bible had been transcribed and entered into a "Clermont County Ohio Bible Summaries" type of book, (found in a St. Louis Library branch in Webster Groves) and was the key to this discovery of TWO marriages to women named "Mary Jane".

Maybe this response also shows why I use the "LOMdate" method of tracking my ancestors, who traveled from (at least) Ohio west through Indiana, Illinois then Missouri, south into Arkansas, then west into Indian Territory/Oklahoma. Some Mott families, including at least one other LOM in northeast MO, settled along the way, others seemed to be adventurous spirits. Politics and religious tolerance were important factors, but property ownership was also a big deal.

Your question about a baby born to Wayne Mott and a girlfriend is not answered because I don't know enough to say yes or no. The info above is the best I've got.

Hi! It was so nice to receive your reply! How exciting for you to be in a John James Bldg! I would love to see it as well as his grave and his home on Hill (?) St. I plan on going to the Statesville library tomorrow to do a little research of my own. My husband's grandfather was John James brother, Walter Baker Mott. They had another brother named H. Y. Mott and all three were doctors, among other things. There father was Rev. Thomas Webb Smith Mott and if you do a google search on T.S.W. Mott you will find many articles he wrote, as well as books will articles about him as well as John James.

I sent you an invitation to my ancestry site so you could see the articles and pictures on John James. He is listed under Thomas Smith Webb Mott, married to Amanda Susan Phillips. If you have trouble see or reading any of the articles or pictures let me know and I'll try to send them to you in a different format.

I would also love to see anything you have found on John James.

Thanks so much for your response and I look forward to chatting again!

Linda Mott
704-467-0379

Re: John James Mott - Hillsboro - Statesville NC

Greetings,

How I love Statesville, NC. My exboyfriend bought a building there on the corner of meeting and west broad. It is one of the most untouched (at that time) buildings in town. It is part of the historical registry for North Carolina. Everyone knows it as the Walton and Gage building. However after a year of research in the Iredell library and Statesville Record newspapers, I discovered the real money to build the beautiful thing is Dr. John James Mott. The building directly behind this one was also his. It is actually older than 201 west broad, but nearly as beautiful. Brett Powers currently owns 201 west broad. In cleaning up this buidling and ebay, we were able to attain receipts for businesses over the years that were in Dr. Motts building. It was discovered under some wood trim the builders signature and date. "This house was build in 1881-82" signed. W. F. Monday. A general contracter in Statesville during that time period. So you have the real date the building was constructed. That information along with articles from the newspaper indicated the buidling belong to and was funded by Dr. Mott. He rented it out immediately to W. L. Hill. later it was in the hands of Dr. Aaron Gage and his grand son in law Waldo Walton. Waldo's wife died giving birth to their third child. Dr. Mott owned most of the land where Signal Hill Mall currently stands. As a matter of fact, Dr. Mott's home is still standing not far from the mall, I believe it is on "Hill drive, lane??" We went there and talked to the currently owners, but they did not know who Mott was. I talked to a doctor in Arkansas who also is related to the Mott family. There is a female named Cora in the lineage also. Motts grave is in the cemetary there in Statesville. Statesville is famous for the Bostonian Train Wreck which ironically occured when Dr. Mott was out of town therefor his name is not associated with the train wreck. Mott also owned the land and property across the street (meeting st) and at one point the town referes to that area as Motts corner. I believe I have some newspaper articles that I can find and send to you if you like. Brett Powers email used to be planeteach@aol.com if you would like to try to get in touch with him to see the building. I can try to find and forward the newspaper articles. Hope this helps. I wish I could have met him, after reading so much about him and standing in his buildings, that would have been cool. :) I would love to see the picture you have of him as well. my email is elise.streeter@yahoo.com

I hope this msg reaches you as I realize your post is pretty old. I have recently started the search for the Mott line and John James is my husbands Great Uncle. I have a photo of him as well as some information I have gleaned online. I plan a trip to Iredell County to do a little more research this week. John James is the son of Rev. Thomas Smith Webb Mott. He had 3 sons that were all doctors. I would appreciate any information you can share with me concerning pictures, letters, receipts or notes. I'll be happy to do the same.

You may contact me via ancestry.com or directly at xena0056@yahoo.com

Kindest Regards,
Linda Mott
704-933-6704
