OK! Got the documentation. My best guess is that you're descended from Phllip (the son, b: abt 1848). And I say that because you mentioned that your grandfathers siblings were Philip, Alfred and Susan. The dates don't seem to match up and I can't find your grandfather(he was born after the 1880 census and may be off on his own before 1900?). In any case here's why I say that:

The 1900 Census from Brooklyn, New York lists the following
Household:

Frederick Motz, age 39, Head,Baker, Born -New York
Mary Motz, age 38, Wife, Born - New York
Frederick Motz,Jr., son, age 13, Born - New York
Archie Motz, son, age 8, Born-New York
George Motz, son, age 3, Born - New York
Susie Motz, daughter, age 14, Born - New York
Philip Motz, nephew, age 12, Born - New York
Alfred Motz, nephew, age 22, Born - New York
Susie Motz, niece, age 9 , Born - New York

So, although the birth dates are off for everyone but Alfred and your grandfather is not included, there are Philip, Alfred, and Susan Motz, all siblings. Also, earlier Census's records list Philip's wife as Susan. I also found an index of NYC deaths that lists Philip Motz dying on 21 March 1900, which would explain why the children are living with their Uncle.

I didn't want to make this too lengthy for the Board, but if you'd like, I'd be happy to send you the rest of the information I have in an email.

Joanne

It certainly looks like we may be related somehow, although I'm not quite sure where it all fits in just yet. I have to dig through the information that I pulled together last year when I was going down the Motz line. Because Philip, Alfred, Susan and George, are all names that I recall from the research. The George that I have (son of Philipp and Barbara) was born abt.1862. He's 8 in the 1870 Census and 17 in the 1880 Census.

Philipp (the original) from Alsace, also had two brothers who came over and settled in College Point,(Balthasar and Jacob) so it could be one of those lines as well. Let me find the folder out when I get home tonight and check it out.

Joanne

After studying your info, it appears that we are related!!!
My Grandfather (Frank George Motz) is apparently the son of one of the people you mentioned.
It would be my guess it would be George the son of Philipp due to the filter down of the name of George.
This is only a guess though. Do you have any other info on this branch??
So this is what I assume (I know…bad word!!). Maybe I should say an educated guess??:
1. Philipp [b: 1818 Alsace France]
2. George [b:?]
3. Frank George Motz [b: 1 Apr 1881 in College Point NY (Queens) (My Grandfather)]
4. Walter Ross Motz [b: 6 Jan 1906 in Washington DC (my dad)]
5 Walter Richard Motz [b: 5 May 1938 in Columbus, OH (me)]
I have researched my Motz family tree. What I have is Jacob Motz born about 1809 married Catherine (Kilzer?) born about 1812 in Germany --(Bad Kessingen?) had four children
Jacob Motz born 5-2-1831 died 9-30-1909
Caroline Motz born 9-25-1834 died 3-13-1921
Catherine Motz
Thabold Motz.
I do have complete info on first two children Jacob(of which I am decended) and Caroline which married a Becker. I do not have any info on Catherine or Thabold but had heard rumors that Catherine had drowned at a young age. The Motz family was from Ohio. I think near Salem Ohio.
but some of this family is from Marrietta,Ohio.

The other day I found a birth certificate framed in a local antique shop dated 26 January 1839 of an infant Motz. I thought I would post this message in case this is of interest to the Motz family. The certificate was written in the old German Script and to the best of my ability I was able to identify the Father as Daniel Motz and mother was Susan. The certificate was from a very detailed location in Pennsylvania (i.e. I believe a town, township, and county was listed) but I didn't have time to transcribe. If someone has an interest I would go and study the script in more detail and try to transcribe and translate more information.

Best Regards,
Steve Gehling

Some additional information, there were two other children of Philipp and Barbara. Their names were Frederick and George. The family did move to College Point, Queens where some of the brothers worked in the rubber factory there. It also appears that many of Philipp and Barbara's grandchildren served in WWI and WW II. These include Alfred John Motz, A. Frank Motz, and Philipp Motz. Sadly, and ironically, one of Philipp and Barbara's grandchildren (Archibald L. Motz) died in the last Battle of the Somme in WWI, and one of their great grandchildren (Frederick P. Motz) died in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII.
If anyone has any information regarding this family I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance!

Joanne(Bunce) Powers

Philipp Motz - Manhattan/France *

I'm searching for any information regarding the Motz family found in the 1860 Census in Manhattan. They are listed as:
Philipp age 42, Barbara age 35, Magdelena age 17, Philipp age 12, Margaretha age 9, and Peter age 5. Philipp and Barbara are listed as having been born in France (assumption is Alsace). They are my ggg grandparents through their daughter Magdelena. She married a German immigrant named Alexander Fellger in 1867 and they eventually settled in Jersey City, New Jersey. It appears as if sometime after 1860 and before 1870 Phillip died. The family may have gone to Queens, NY at that time. Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Joanne (Bunce) Powers

He died Sept. 20, 1908 in Lower Salem, Ohio
The family named changed from Matz to Motz when they came to USA. I have the whole family tree if you believe this is your family.
I believe I too am descended from George Motz, son of Johann Casper but it is only true if I can prove that Catherine Moats who married Peter Mertz was one of George's 5 daughters. The connections are strong in that Peter's father Philip was George's neighbor in Freeburg, PA and Peter and Catherine named one of their sons George Peter, and finally Peter and Catherine are buried at St Peter's Union Church in Freeburg -- where it is said George Motz was buried. And the Mertz' came from Berks before Snyder (then Northumberland) County.

I have obtained a copy of George Motz's will and have transcribed it and would be happy to send it to you (give me your email), though it refers to 5 daughters it doesn't name the older 3.

So, is there anything you can do to help me soldily connect Catherine to George?
I am looking for my siblings. I don't have names, but I do know their mother is Alice Motz. And their father, and mine, is Robert Motz. He is deceased. According to his military record, he had three children, born in the late 50's, when he was discharged. They lived in Amelia, Ohio. I think?

Jacob Motz(Matz) nad Catherine were from Lower Salem Ohio about 8 miles north of Marietta ohio. The rest of the Kilzers lived in Summit Township which is now called Lewisville Ohio. The Kilzer family came to the United States around 1839 from Rinnthal&Spirkelbach Germany.

Jacob Motz Washinton Co., Md. *

Hi All,

I've been doing research on and off for 27 yrs. on sveral lines in my family tree. I have a Motz/Moats line around the area of Washington Co., Md./Franklin Co., Pa. For a long time it has been believed that Edward Moats(b.1844 pa. d. 1912 pa)was the son of a Henry Moats(b.1805 d. ?)& Catherine Thomas. I got some recent info that suggests otherwise:

Moats Edward Moats, s/o Jacob & Catherine (Monn) Moats, b 14 Feb. 1844, d 14 July 1912; 68 yrs., 5 months. *Grove Funeral Home Record.

When I did a census Search(Heritage Quest)I found only one Jacob Motz in the general area.

1790 Federal Census Wash. Co. Md. No Twp.
Jacob Motz 1 3 4

1 = male 16 and over(Jacob)
3 = males under 16 yrs. old.
4 = females including head of houshold

There were no other Motz's in the Washington Co., Md./Franklin Co., Pa. area after that. What I think may be the case is, they changed their name to Moats(both are numerous in this area).

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated on this Jacob Motz!

Motz in Indiana

Samuel Motz left Ashland Co., Ohio and went to Greene Co., Indiana before the Civil War. He had two sons that I know of - Ananias "Winfield" and William "Harrison" Motz. Also, there was a George Motz in Greene Co. at that time and may have also been the son of Samuel, although I have not yet determined the link.

The line I have researched is Ananias Winfield. The information is on Ancestry. When the family was in Ohio, half of them decided to spell the name Moats and some kept the Motz spelling. I have also seen it alternately spelled Moats, Moatz,
Moutz, etc. so you might consider all spellings.

Kathryn Sue Warren

I am also a descendent of Jacob Motz born May 2, 1831. Jacob had a son, Lewis or Louis born Aug. 30, 1859. He in turn had a son, Charles Motz who was my grandfather. I would be very, very interested in seeing the complete Motz family tree references in another one of your posts.
