I have followed this story over the last few months. I hope you and your family have seen it. Your mother indicated your dad never spoke of his time in the camp or the war in general. The first article I saw was about a medica named Anthony Acevedo who was held at Berga and kept a diary of his time there and his fellow soldiers who passed at the hands of the Nazis. He felt America needed to know what these soldiers were told: to not ever mention a single thing that they endured. How sad for the veterans and their families to live without closure. This is an article from today, a continuation of the story. I am not remembering where your dad was in camp, but I remember your mother saying he was on the "death march".

Well, I am not sending this to drudge up bad memories. I think what this Acevedo has done is a very honorable service to all those in the military. I think his message is quite a Christmas gift. If my link is not readable, this story was on cnn.com and you should be able to locate it there.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/12/23/slave.camp.honor/index.html

I told my dad about your dad passing. Here is his response, I thought you might like to see it!

Hi Roz!

Thanks for sending me that notice. Grandma Ingram used to talk lovingly of Popeye...almost like he was a member of the family. Most people thought he probably was killed in the early fighting of World War 11, but Grandma said she knew he was all right. During the depression of the 1930's, lots of young men drifted out here from back East. Some were with the old CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and others just to try to find work. Popeye was one of those Grandpa Ingram hired to hoe beans on the farm. It has been said that each of us is only seven people away from everyone else currently living on Earth. I'm beginning to believe it.
Thanks again Roz, I appreciate it.

Love,
Daddy
Thank you for your email. The person you corresponded with earlier was my brother.

My Dad didn't talk about the war, but he did often fondly speak of his time in Idaho. Even though he'll be gone one year tomorrow, he's greatly missed daily.

Well God Bless Him. He was a dear friend of my great grandparents in Idaho. My great grandmother always knew he survived the war and would come back one day. And he did.

In my genealogy research I found a few items of his including a piece of mail he sent to my great grandparents.

You may recall that I did locate him and your mother several years back. I believe I sent copies of what I had to them. But your mother indicated your father didn't talk about the war. that is understandable. Are you the sibling I conversed with? One of the sons emailed me about all this too.....

I am sorry for your loss. Take care.

Hate to add to the continued confusion, but my great-grandmother was Dororthy "Dora" Motzko b. 1893 d. 1975. Her parents were Peter b. 1844 and Maria (Lukas) b. 1858. Dora's siblings were Mary (b. 1887), Anna (b. 1889), Emma (b. 1891), Bertha (b. 1893), Juliana (b. 1894).

Dora eventually married Frank Kastanek and had my grandmother Lorraine who married Joseph Kmetz.

Hope that helps somebody. If anyone has any further info on these folks, please let me know.

Thanks,
--Ben
The German / Polish thing isnt really an issue
because it was originally Poland then occupied by Germany for many years then reverted back to poland
after WWII I believe
the name was Silesia in Poland but I cannot recall what it was called while under German Occupation
so theoretically the folks could or may be both German and Polish depending on the family lineage and how you look at the time frame when Poland was Occupied by Germany
Can anyone tell me if the Motzko family originated in Selisia, an area that is now in Poland, but was in Prussia (Germany)? Did they consider themselves German? Were they Catholic? If yes, a branch of that family migrated to Szepes county in what is now Slovakia. The name evolved to Montsko and Moncsko. Some descendants migrated to the USA, as did the Motzkos. Those who remained, and lived there at the time of the 2nd World War, were expelled in 1945. They have moved to Germany.

Bill Moncsko (Montsko, Motzko?)

Elizabeth:
Do you know, or have any clues, about the name of the town in Selisia from which your ancestors came? If so, the Catholic church there may have kept records of births, marriages, and deaths. Many of these church records have been microfilmed by the LDS Church, and are available from their Family History Centers. These centers have a wealth of information that may help you in your search, including translation materials so you can understand the records.
Some Motzko info - Mary Motzko of Little Fals, MN

My wife's gr grandmother was Mary Motzko (b. 11-Aug-1888, d. 16-July-1968 at St. Otto's Home in Little Falls, MN). She married Joseph (orig Jozef) Danko (b. 18-Mar-1885, d. 4-Jan-1964). Mary came from Pillsbury, PA with her parents in North Prarie, MN, and later lived in Flensberg. (I have her father's name as John Motzko) Mary later moved to Minneapolis to marry Joseph Danko on 27-Jan-1908 at St. Cyril Church (Mpls). They then moved to Little Falls, MN. For 20 years, she had suffered from diabetes and had been on insulin. Mary and Joseph are buried at Our Lady of Lourdes cemetery, west of Little Falls, MN.

Mary was a member of the Rosary Society of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Third Order of St. Francis, and in Mpls belonged to the Jednota Society.

For siblings, her obit says the following:
She had a brother, John Motzko, Flensburg, a sister, Mrs. Susie Hoholick, Thompson, MI, 33 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

They had 8 kids (you may e-mail me for their names).
I have a couple of photos I can scan for you.

I hope this helps. e-mail me at aekolman@aol.com for questions.
Regards.

My Grandfather, Joseph Lucas, son of Anton Lucas, married Elizabeth Motzko. They were divorced and both were basically disowned from their families. I am having difficulty finding information regarding my grandmother's family. Elizabeth Motzko was born November 18, 1892 and died August 8, 1961. Does anyone have definite information regarding her being the daughter of Andrew Motzko and Sofia Matyshok Motzko?
My grandmother was Elizabeth Motzko and she married Joseph Lucas and lived in Minneapolis. On the census information from 1920 she states that both her mother and father came from Selisia. Yes, they were Roman Catholic. I am finding the census information interesting as the family says they came from Germany, but spoke Polish. So, I believe they considered themselves Polish. There has always been this hint that we were part German, but I have yet to find any proof.

However, I do not know my grandmothers parents names. I would be very interested in anyone from the Browerville area that can give me any information on Motzko's that had a daughter Elizabeth. She was born in 1898 and died in 1961.

Barb Lucas Thompson
