I believe that I have the same hand written chart on the Mounces. I am looking for proof that Smith was Matthias and Mary(Molly)'s son. Do you have any obits, etc? I also am a decendent of the Tiltons.

Elane - We have corresponded in the past. I am also descended from Milton Squires and Elizabeth Jane Mounce. They are my great-great-grandparents. You said that you were descended from Jacob S Rauch and Emeline Squires. I have not been able to find them in the 1930 census but did find them in Oregon at the time of the 1920 census. Do you happen to have an obituary for either Jacob or Emeline?
I have searched at different times for the grave for Smith Mounce [James Smith Mounce] but have not had any success. I will get in touch with the City Hall in Center Point and see if they have any record of his burial in the Center Point Cemetery.
Keep in touch -

Would you happen to know where Elizabeth is buried, I read that it is Smith co KS in Stuart Cemetery and that she died sometime in 1880. I have read that she went to Kansas but never found her on a 1880 census. Also do you know why Smith and Elizabeth separated (that is how it sounded by reading Smith's will), maybe it was because they were getting older. In 1870 she is living with a Granddaughter and he is living with his son Isaac in 1860. I haven't found Elizabeth on an 1860 census. Do you happen to know where Smith Mounce is buried? I have his death date 2-19-1864. Hope this is not to many questions! :)

I have been trying to find someone from the Mounce family that might know of Sarah Blight who married Dick Nethercott of Mitchell, Ontario.

My great great grandmother was Mary Richards who married John Blight in Devon, England in 1856. Her 2 sisters, Lucy and Sarah came to Canada. Lucy Richards married John Mounce in 1864 in Devon England. They were living in Perth County at the time of the birth of their son Albert Edward Mounce (father of Ross Mounce)in 1869.

John Mounce and his wife Lucy Richards are found living in Township of Darlington, Durham county in 1871 census, and in the 1881 census the Mounce family is residing in Oshawa. John Mounce was a blacksmith.

By 1910 John Mounce and his wife Lucy Richards were living in Toronto, and in 1909 my great great aunt Sarah Ann Blight (daughter of Mary Richards and John Blight) immigrated from Devon to Toronto, living near them. After Lucy's Mounce's death in 1913, Sarah Blight moved to Perth County near other Devon folk. My grandmother Ada Glover 1897-1946 immigrated from Devon in 1913 and came to live near her Aunt Sarah.

I have seen postcards that refer to Lucy (Richards) Mounce as aunt, and Albert Edward Mounce (of Oshawa) as dear cousin from Sarah.

Albert Mounce and Martha Agnes Byam were married in 1890 in Whitby, ON. Murin Ross Mounce was born Nov 27 1902 to Albert and Martha. Other children were Ernest Albert, William John, Ruby Lillian, Aubrey R. E., and Doris Madeline.

Please email me at
mail_for_heather@yahoo.ca

My grandfather was named Ross Mounce. I know very little about his family, as he and my grandmother were divorced and my father, David Ross Mounce was an only child raised by his mother (Verna Mounce - nee Black. My dad was raised in Oshawa, I think that his father Ross was from there. My father was born in 1931, so his father would have been born in the earlier 1900's.

My greatgrandmother was Lucinda Erp Mounce. I have tried to find information on her mother's lineage. Her mother was Mahala Hargis. Mahala's parents were Lucinda Baker and Napoleon Hargis. Is anyone familiar with this part of the family? Lucinda Erp married John Riley Mounce. They lived in Somerset, KY, however, I believe Mahala Hargis may have been born in Tennessee and that her parents may have been further south. I also believe that one or both of them may be Cherokee.

Has anyone actually seen the 1820 Census for IL, not just the online database index?

The following information is from the index.

There is a Smith Mounce presumably associated with a Mary Mounce (they both filed on 2 Apr 1821 and are on suceeding pages (58 & 59) in this index for Edwards Co. IL. [need to check for twp] In another state of Colonial Census (different from the above source) again we have a Smith (pg 13) Mary (pg 16) with no twp or date listed. Other Mounces listed in the index, Absolum Wayne Co, and John 1840 Jersey Co.
We were very lucky in that Hurricane Ike passed east of us. We did get a lot of wind and rain but we didn't lose power at all. Other areas in our county lost power and there were a lot of downed trees. All of our trees are still standing! We took down a dead pine on Friday before the storm hit and we were very thankful that we did as we would have worried all the time and it probably would have fallen into our power line. Our son and his family live east of us near Tyler and they lost power for a couple of hours or so. He has a built-in generator that comes on automatically so they were just fine. The sun is shining here today and the wind is not blowing! Depending on which of our rain gauges you look at we got 3.5 inches or 4.25 inches. One is more in the open than the other. We were surprised that any rain went into them as the rain was going sideways most of the time!

I have had to change gen programs in mid-stream too. I had a program that I had used for many years and then I discovered that it wouldn't do gedcoms on my computer. Of course I was limited as I use an Apple computer. I was going to use Family Tree Maker but they quit upgrading for the Apples. I finally found Reunion which is written especially for the MacIntosh computers. I have stayed with it for a long time. I think one of my 'cousins' that I correspond with uses the Legacy program. It always takes time to get used to a new program and I wasn't sure I would like Reunion. However, I have gotten used to it and still discover new things about it that I like so that is good.

There was a Nancy Mounce who married John S Cully. Is this the Cully that she bought the homestead from?

Take care -

Virginia -
I remember corresponding with you a few years ago! Thanks for sending me JD's obit. I appreciate your sharing it with me. Would you mind sending me Abigail's obit? I haven't worked with the Mounce family lately but need to get things caught up again. I have been working with my husband's family lately as we have been back and forth to Kansas quite a bit.

At the moment we are waiting for Hurricane Ike to come ashore and start north. Hopefully we won't lose power but they are predicting high winds so there is a good chance we will. We will also get some rain which we really need. I guess we are ready. We live directly north of Houston about 200 miles or so.

Where did you locate the land transactions for JD? Did he have any original land patents?

It was really nice to hear from you again. Take care and keep in touch -

Marian

Hello. I am replying to your inquiry about MOUNCE. I don't know of any Marion Mounce, unless he had another first name or Marion was his middle name. Do you have any dates. I have a Abraham W. "Colonel" Mounce in Adair County, Okla. He had two children, George and Rosie Mounce. He died in Adair Co., Okla. I do have a James Smith Mounts who md. Rachel Montgomery, died in Gibson Co., Indiana, he had son Garrard. I have a Hugh Mounts married in Gibson Co. Indiana to a Elizabeth Hart. I have a Henry Mounts died in Knotts Co., Indiana in 1809. Also a Joseph Woods Mounce from Princeton, Indiana died Dec. 15, 1864. These are the only Mounce/Mounts I have from Indiana. If I can be of any other help, please let me know.
Donna

Hello, Now I have a place to go. I don't have anything on Smith Mounts and Elizabeth Woods chilldren, I show they had 8 children, but no information. I had no record of Abraham "Colonel" Mounce in the war. Colonel was the son of John P. Mounce, his father was Joseph, his father was John Mounce Jr. and Rachel Wade. Matthias was the brother of John and Absolam Mounce, their father was John Frederick Mounce. John is the decendent of my husband. I do know that Absolam was killed by indians. I received this information through another relative Dee Reynolds. I would love to know more about the children of this family and your line?? You can find the world war I records on Ancestry, just type in World War I and give name. I gave up my Ancestry account when I finished (if you can call it finished) my Mounce search. I still get inquiries about the family and I will help when possible. If I can be of any further help let me know. Oh yes, are you Henry Arthur Mounts from San Diego, Ca.? If so, thanks for some of your help I found some of my information on the Finley-McFarling database. I would really like to know your relationship down the line.

Donna

Hi,
Colonel Mounce was born in Wayne Co., Ky. Nov 23, 1946. Married Melinda Holtzclaw, she was indian, she was born 1859 in Illinois. They married 25 January 1885 in Yell Co., Arkansas. Their son, George was born in 1888 and was married to Susie Crittenden, an indian, they lived in Adair Co., Oklahoma all their married life, had 6 children, all are buried in Chewey, Oklahoma cemetery in Adair County. I'll have to check my book and see if there was any military information on him. I can't remember right now. The book is in the bedroom, and my husband has already gone to bed, so I don't want to turn lights on in there now. I will in the morning and post a reply if I find anything. I believe that Colonel's wife and family were living in Yell county when they met though, don't know when they might have moved to Yell Co. There was little work at that time, so Colonel and Melinda moved to Oklahoma to be near Colonel's family.
Donna

I thought that "Colonel" Mounce might have been his father. He was from Oklahoma and raised on a reservation. His mother was indian. The name I was given was Marion Elbert Mounce. What happened to George, Colonel's son. When was he born? Was Colonel's wife indian? There is a possibility that he may have lived in Paris Illinois. At least through 1911, when my uncle Roscoe Mounce was born. My Mother was born in Hammond, Indiana. No one know's where he went after the war, he was turned away by my grandmother.

Is there a way to check WWI records?

Thank you for your help.

Jan

Mu grandfather was Marion Mounce from Oklahoma. He was the son of a native american mother and a white father. He relocated to Indiana sometime before WWI and married Mae Hatthaway. The last time my mother saw him was shortly after the war. I am trying to track the native american bloodline. There were several Mounce's listed in the Adair, OK 1920 census. I suspect his father was Coloul Mounce. I'm not sure where to go from here.

My mother is Jean Elizabeth ( Mounce) Buchanan. Her faher was Lafe Mounce, his father was Lafayette Mounce Sr., and his father was Isaac Mounce of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We came to Cedar Rapids about 10 years ago to attend the Mounce picnic and one of the IA Mounces took us out in someone's field to a Mounce cemetary. Some of the other Mounces who could be found in and around Lewiston Idaho in the mid to late 1800's were Eben Mounce, Jasper Mounce, Owen Mounce, Christopher Columbus Mounce etc. Please contact us if you have more info on the family and where they came to US from and when. We think from Germany in early days.

Hi MaryAnn--talked to you how many years ago!
I too have both obit's but unfortunately it is just the newspaper clipping and I haven't yet found the paper it was printed in. Several years ago I visited Wellington KS and visited the graves, but the obit was not listed in the Wellington paper.

John Mounce Obituary
AGED CIVIL WAR SOLDIER PASSES: WAS NEARLY 100
John D. Mounce Dies At Home Of His Daughter Near Wellington

John D. Mounce one of the few remaining civil war veterans in Sumner county, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lon Prunty, southwest of Wellington.

Mr. Mounce was born on December 18, 1838 at Keokuk, Iowa and lacked only a few months of being 100 years old.

During the civil war, he joined the 20th Iowa Company A and served until the close of the war when he was discharged at the age of 28.

During the earlier part of his life he was a United Brethren minister and has preached in Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas.

He came to Kansas in 1882 and settled at Mayfield. he also lived for a number of years at South Haven and preached at different places in the county. At one time he preached at the Slate Valley School.

During the past several years, he has lived in Wellington at 315 West Eleventh. He was feeling well until about six weeks ago., and has been at the home of his daughter about four weeks.

Besides Mrs. Prunty, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Tilton of Rochelle, Ill.: two sons, C.W. Mounce of Wichita and J. M. Mounce of Wellington; 30 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Deweese Funeral home with Rev. W.S. Gundy officiating. Burial will be in the South Haven cemetery.

Grandsons and sons-in-law will be pallbearers and the male quartet of the Christian Church will sing.

John supposedly married three times, first to Abigail, then to unknown and lastly to Kathryn I have a couple of pictures of him. Also have a picture of Aunt Nettie and Len.

I just today found him in Jackson MO in the 1900 Census. Charles W. Mounce, his son, went to OK territory and homesteaded there. I also have took copies of land transactions of JD in Smith Co. KS. Can you believe they are still using the original land book?

I have descendents of John Dixon and Abigail and have a genealogy done by a cousin but she doesn't give sources for her information except in a general way.

JD was a civil war veteran and is buried in Wellington KS. He was an itinerant preacher and travelled throughout the midwest on horseback. I currently am working on his mother, Elizabeth Woods, who filed for a dep. mother's pension from Stuart KS where JD and his son Charles Mounce lived for a while. Other siblings of Isaac, were Elizabeth (my grandmother) Charles W., Nancy E., Linn, Vineta (who I visited as a child) Arminta and J. Milton. Isaac is listed in the 1870 Census as being 11 yrs. and occupation was listed "at home" in distinction to "attending school" which was given for his two younger siblings.

If you would believe my other gen program is so old and I am getting some errors in reports, and some data is not linked properly, and is now unable to extract a gedcom file so....I am starting over with ancestry.com and Legacy but don't really like it as much as the old one.

Hope you survive Ike it looks just terrible. I actually looked at the land records in Smith Co. Will dig up the copies sometime after my cast comes off (END OF OCT). One of the tranactions was sort of peculiar--Abigail bought a homestead from a Cully which was a cousin. I also have JD civil war file, lots of missing items I am sure. He actually only served a few months (rather than as stated in the obit) and then got a medical discharge.

Donna:

The John Mounce and Rachel Wade are of a different line than mine. If I recall I do have some data on this line; but because of my having my home tex-cote and new vinyl windows installed everything has gotten misplaced and I am in the process of getting it back together.

I have my line back to John Mounts who was born in 1635 in Switzerland. His son was Frederick Mathias Mounts, born 1660 in Swiss Palatinate, Southern Germany. AKA Fredi Erich Mathias Mounts, "Grandfather" Mounts, Erich Mounce abd Matthias {Mathew} Mounts. Hse was the first immigrant to America. Came about 1681 to William Penn's Colony. He helped lay the corner stone for the first house in Philadelphia. On 04 March 1681, the Charter for the Province of Pennsylvania was granted by King Charles, the Second, to William Penn. Have no spouse listed. Frederick had a son also named John {The Elder} Mounts, ho was born in 1690 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA. Only have a first name for his spouse-Katherine. John Frederick Mounts {1690] AKA John Friedrich Maus, was born in 1725 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, His wife was Sasannah Margaretha Able {she angelized her name to: Susannah Margaret Able; her parents were Johann Mathias Able and Anna Margareth maiden name unknown. John Frederick and Susannah had two sons: John Mathias "Erich" Mounts, Sr. was born possible in Germantown, Philadelphia County, PA. He was christened at St. Michalis Evangelia Luthern Church, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA. Killed by a limb from a falling tree on 10 February 1781 in Lincoln County, KY or Montgomery County, KY. His wife was Mary Lydia Smith, born before 1742 in Garrard County, KY. They were married in Augusta County, VA. She expired in Garrard County, VA {KY}. They had nine children {will list in another e-mail}. Another son of John Frederick and Susannah Margaret was Absalom Mounts, born in Philadelphia County, PA.

Oh! yes, I am the Henry A. Mounts of San Diego, CA.
