Truck,
I believe you are confusing two different Samuel Mournings. Samuel Mourning, the son of John Mourning and Hannah Ball was born 11/25/1811 in Adair Co., KY.(not Ireland). He died on 11/11/1879 in Hancock Co, IL. He is buried in the West Basco Cemetery, West Basco, Hancock Co. IL. On 12/5/1837 in Adair Co., KY he married Nancy Agnes Lyon. They had 9 children. He was a Civil War veteran serving in the Union Army. He enlisted on 1/12/1862, Co.G, 12th Reg. Volunteers, IL Cavalry. I descend through his brother William Mourning.

My part of the family originally came from Point Pilot West Virginia. My greatuncle Andrew and Tom cdame to AR in 1910 and my grandfather came to AR in 1912. Their father was Andrew Jackson Mourning. There is some of my family in Arkansas and some in Lake, WN. I believe we had some generations back in KY and Tn as well as IL.

By the way, my dad was Jack Mourning. Who was yours?
Deb

This is quite funny. That is the exact story filtering through my family here in Washington & Idaho. The assumption has always been made that the "spelling change" was from Morning to Mourning but could it have been from "Mourne" to "Mourning?" All speculation on my part. May I ask Deborah what part of the country/world your family is from? Curious that the stories are very much parallel.

Origin of Mourning name?

I'm wondering if anyone has a clue where our name originated. Our family tradition has been long passed down as from the area around the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland. I've confirmed that the mountains are indeed there and are named as such but no link. I've emailed with a local resident of the area in Ireland and they new of "Mornings" in the area but not any "Mournings".
It's a puzzle. Fun but frustrating.
Anyone have any wisdom on this subject?

Re: Mournings from VA

I believe I may be a descendant of the brother John Mourning that you talk about in your note. According to my notes my John was born between 1790 and 1800 in we believe Virginia. (Census indicates that Johns siblings were listed as all being born in Virginia but John's did not state this.
Later (1855) John marries Christian Hanna Bishop in Lincoln Co. MO. (familysearch.com says Warren Co. MO.)
We are also trying to find the father of John. A person in our family has dug a little and has made an "assumption" that his father is "Daniel" and that Daniel's father is "Roger" but since this family member put a ? after then I'm sure she wasn't able to prove it as yet.
Don't know if this helps. I would love to hear from you if you suspect that you are related. I'm from Washington State but do not know who the "Arminta Elizabeth Mourning" might be listed in the other response to your note. I may have to do some digging however.

Robert Mourning married Jessie Cross. I believe they married in Iowa. That is where my father Clarence was born. I do know Robert and his family used to attend family reunions in the Macomb area. I also know Robert had a brother Clinton and a sister Elizabeth. I believe Robert's father also moved to Des Moine, Iowa but I have no idea whether it was before or after Robert was born. I have been searching census records, but with so little information its hard to find anyone. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks again,
Eileen
PS you can email me direct at Academic@wordware.com

Looking for info on an unknown Mourning. She married Hardy W. Wooten. He was born 1785 in Edgecombe County, N.C. and died 1815 in Burke County, Georgia. I'm sure that Ms. Mourning was born and died near her husband's time frame and in the same states. They had at least three children together, Jane, Nancy, and Joel B. Wooten. Does anyone have any idea on who Ms. Mourning was, who her family was?
Thanks, Patsy

Carrie Mourning murdered in Alabama?

I'm hoping someone will know something about this Crecie Ward and her daughter Carrie.

Family tradition says that Crecie Ward was born in Henry County, Alabama around 1847. She is shown on the 1860 census for Henry County residing with Emily Polson, who was some relation to her.

The Crecie Ward that I am searching for is known to have had a daughter. In the 1880 census Luanner(aka Carrie), was born about 1879.

Family tradition has it that the daughter (Mrs. Carrie Mourning) of the Crecie we are researching was murdered. She supposedly went to town on an errand and failed to return in the afternoon. Later that evening her horse and buggy came back without her. A search party soon found her body. A local black was suspected of committing the deed, but no proof was forthcoming. Later, it was suspicioned that the girl's husband killed her and left her body beside the road to avid suspicion to himself. Her actual killer was never apprehended. Crecie Ward died in Alabama in her 90's.

I have not been able to find any information to go with this story. If you know, pleaseeeeeeeee, help.

Carrie Cox

Does anyone know of a connection of a Mourning family to the Wallace family? This Wallace family was from Martin Co, NC to Stewart and Davidson Co. TN in about 1808. Other possible connections could be with Exum, Bellamy, Pierce, Raiford/Redford, Brown, Wilkins, Andrews, Manning, or Page families. Willing to follow any lead.

I was told all my life by my grandparents and parents that we did indeed get our name from the Mourne mountains in Ireland. Was also told all my life that the boys got into some kind of trouble over there (like horse thieving) so they came to US and changed the spelling to Mourning. No proof just lots of fun stories. By the way,k who is your father? It isn't Herbert Dale by chance is it?

It is not known whether Jane Kennedy is Sarah's mother. Jane was on the ship when Roger and John came across. His wife may have died in childbirth, he may have been carrying Sarah with him and/or entrusted Jane to take care of her, or Sarah may be Jane's sister as I believe there is a Jane and Sarah Kennedy listed as passengers on a ship at that time. We may never know the truth.

Of course there are. I've had the joy of running into Bob and seeing all the information he has. From there you just have to interview your family members to get all the descendents in line. If you get this chance take a good look at the heraldic achievement (not a family crest) this artifact takes us back to the second crusades where I believe it has the ancestor being a messenger. We started out fighting on one side of religion and Roger came to the states to fight it against it. Up through Scotland over to Ireland and then to the US. There is a lot of research to do if you want to figure that out and most of it you have to imagine. Now imagine how that thing ended up in the states approx. 800 years later. My husband is the last decendent of his line running from John, Roger's son.
