MOWERY Jean Cellines 1925-2009 Ohio

LIBERTY, Ohio –Mrs. Jean Mowery, 84, passed away on Oct. 22, at Liberty Healthcare Center from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease with her daughter and son-in-law at her side.

Jeanne was born on Aug. 28, 1925 in the Smokey Hollow District in Youngstown, Ohio the daughter of Joseph and Katie Tucci Cellines.

She was a graduate of Ursuline High School and the Choffin School of Practical Nursing. She was employed at G.M. McKelvey Co. and then was employed as an office nurse for Dr. Sedwick providing wound care at the old Southside Hospital in the 1940s.

Jeanne never met a stranger. Anyone who knows her was treated to homemade biscotti, pizzelles and cavatellis, and even took the plate home. The only price to enjoy these treats was to listen to her sing “Way Marie” and “Oh, Johnny.” An added bonus was a dance performance in her massive kitchen. She loved to pass each day singing and baking and then delivering all the cookies and pasta to friends and the homeless she passed as she shopped at the plaza.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Carole Mauro and her husband, Michael Mauro, whom Jeanne adored as if he was her own son and called him “her crazy Sicilian”; grandsons, Michael (Trisha) Mauro and their children (her great-grandchildren) Michael Vincent and Isabella Marie of Champion and Jason Mauro of Liberty. Both boys were her pride and joy and she lived each day to visit them and was so proud they achieved happiness and success in life.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Anthony Cellines.

Friends and family are asked to make any material contributions to the Second Harvest Food Bank to Jeanne continue in her quest to help feed everyone. “Ti Amo, Mamarelle.”

A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be at Schiavone Funeral Home on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, from 9:30 to 11 a.m, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery
mahoning
My ancestor was Nicholas Mourer, born in Pennsylvania or Maryland in about 1785 and died in Franklin County, PA about 1818. He was married to Catherine Kuhn (b. 1789, d. 1868)and had the following children: Daniel (b. 1811), Jacob (b. 1813), Charlotte (b. abt. 1816), Anna Eliza (b. 1816), Nicholas (b. 1818) and Catherine b. 1818).

I know Nicholas Sr. had a brother named John (b. 1787), as John moved his family to New Castle, Indiana around 1840 at about the same time Nicholas' widow Catherine moved her children there.

Much of the information you have posted is similar to the history I have found, and I would like to compare information to see if there is a link.

Sincerely,

Brenda Ropp

Morey 2138 Email 05 Inbox: Faye Pauline Rhoades

Morey 2138 Email 05 Reply

Dear Jacob

This is not really a barrel bending long shot. You do have four names two towns and two years, and Humphrey, Cattaraugus, NY, USA as an interior town in the eastern half of the county, northeast of the City of Salamanca in northwest New York is not far from Perry, Lake, OH, USA. The problem is the name Mowery as Maurer with its root in Palatine Germany is more associated with Pennsylvania and later Ohio than New York.

However the part of Pennsylvania to which some Mowery or Mowrey migrated such as Coal Shamokin is near the conjunction of New York and Ohio. No ages are given, or grandchildren but to be a woman married and have Rhoades parents dying would suggest an age of around fifty, an age where one could be found in a 1930 census or the American social security death index.

Not including Faye Rhoades there are three by the name Faye Mowery associated with Ohio, but they all die well after the internment in 1943.

A search of Don Mowrey in NY, PA, OH, sorted on year not surprisingly does not show any Mowery in New York, except for the one I added as living there mentioned in Mother Rhoades will of 1939.

So who the Donald Mowrey was who married Faye Pauline Rhoades I cannot fathom. Sorry. The transcriptions of 1920 and 1930 American censuses for Mowry, Mowrey and Mowery have not been given me. I alone completed only the Morey two. I have got the first war Morey and Mowry draft card indexes done and the SSDI for most spellings of Morey. Perhaps you should look for Donald Mowrey in the first war, 1900. 1910, 1920, 1939 censuses and the second war draft card index, along with directories for north west New York and Pennsylvania, and north east Ohio.

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand

Donald Mowery & Faye Pauline Rhoades of Humphrey, NY 1939

This is, I admit, a "Long Shot". I am looking for a Donald Mowery who married Faye Pauline Rhoades. I don't know much more than that. Faye is mentioned in her mothers obituary in 1939 in Lake Co, Ohio, as "Mrs Donald Mowery of Humphrey, NY" Faye is buried in her parents, Rhoades Family Plot in Perry Cemetery, Perry, Lake Co, Ohio. I don't know for sure that her married name is on the stone, I don't think so. Faye died in 1943, we do not know where. We do not know where or when she was married to Donald Mowery. So, I am playing this longshot on the Mowery Board.

Dear Kathy

Prior to the ARW German migrant ships left only from the port of Rotterdam in Holland, and only arrived Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the New World where the oath of allegiance to the British Crown was signed. There was a huge bulge in migration between the above mentioned ports in the late 1740s, early 1750s. We can call these people Pennsylvania Dutch, because they sailed from Rotterdam. The ships and their captains were British. The migrants were going to a British Colony. These names Maurer, Mauser, Mowrey, Mowery, and Mowry are none too common in Pennsylvania. The general thrust was Huguenot out of France. Today Sunday 19 Apr 2009 is the 480th anniversary of the term Protestant. The general flow was going to be to the land across the Atlantic from Europe.

I am pleased to see someone has answered your message after eight years. It is definitely well worth the wait! In the meantime I have been keying the scraps of data entangled amongst these messages into the Morey database of 235 spellings.

Is the Emma Jane Mowery to whom this thread refers reflected in these three BMD records?

1856	Emma Jane	MOWERY	F	B	00 Jan 1856	William C	MOWERY	Mary Anne	LAWRENCE	John McCue	DEEM	B: IN F:OH M:OH	Union	Whitley	IN	USA	Chet Mowrey	Birth	KLN Eva Fickes	Morey Forum Email 2050 03

1874	Emma Jane	MOWERY	F	M	29 Mar 1874	William C	MOWERY	Mary Anne	LAWRENCE	John McCue	DEEM	B: IN F:OH M:OH	Smith	Whitley	IN	USA	Chet Mowrey	Marriage	KLN Eva Fickes	Morey Forum Email 2050 03

1934	Emma Jane	MOWERY	F	D	21 Jun 1934	William C	MOWERY	Mary Anne	LAWRENCE	John McCue	DEEM	B: IN F:OH M:OH	Smith	Whitley	IN	USA	Chet Mowrey	Death	KLN Eva Fickes	Morey Forum Email 2050 03

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand

First of all, thanks for responding. What's interesting here is that my original post was done 8 yrs ago in 2001, so I would say it pays to hang around awhile! My info has changed regarding Emma Jane Mowery - she did not die before my grandmother grew up;in fact, she was in the 1900 census for Indiana along with my g.mother and grt.uncle. In any event, still looking for family background for Mowery. If you have info for PA or OH,maybe we can figure this out. I have found several unknown living cousins thru the years, so ya never know! Regards, Kathy Weaver

Dear Donna

Thanks for the new data. It certainly ties in a few records in the Morey database. Data is sent me in comma delimited text from other Morey researchers and sometimes it is only by luck of a find and sort two bits of data show a match. There is a series of data in the Morey database known as the Maurer Series. The individuals in this series are spread across Pennsylvania and it is possible the series is one family.

On a search for Harv in Pennsylvania, in a county or town spelt Shimokan there is a marriage in 1859 between Harvey Maurer and Amelia Hartlein. So Hartlein must have been another spelling of Hartline. Of course Shimoman was really Shamokin and the year is wrong. It is from scraps of data such as this we are building up family trees. You will understand how one can easily take the wrong path especially when other researchers have not been wearing stout gardening shoes themselves.

I must say I have real problems with the dating system of mm/dd/yyyy. We use every day in the British Commonwealth dd/mm/yyyy, but the International Genealogical System is dd mmm yyyy to accommodate both systems and stop errors. I know it is alien to you, but if all the people on Mowery Rootsweb used the system it would make things simpler.

As an aside many people subscribe to these message boards and then change their email address. Rootsweb will take a few email bounces but when the boards get hammered as ours has over the last few days and there have been many bounces people get unsubscribed. We have lost about ten over the last two days. Mowrey Rootsweb is down to three or four of us now and two of us are Morey researchers respectively from Australia and New Zealand. I have not checked on this one lately for numbers.

I have changed the dates to dd mmm yyyy manually as my FTW is set this way and your dates pasted in do not come up correctly.

Arthur J Mowery died in Baltimore, MD, USA. German girls do not seem to have a problem marrying younger men. Here is an Emma C Mowery SSN 165 20 0881 Issued: PA, with no Zip Code to cross reference

1909	Emma C	MOWERY	F	B	03 Nov 1909 Issued: PA PA	USA	SSN 165 20 0881	Birth ex SSDI	Feral USA	Morey Forum Email 142DI-1

1989	Emma C	MOWERY	F	D	Jun 1989 PA	USA	SSN 165 20 0881 Feral USA	Morey Forum Email 142DI-1

.I have got Elsie Irene Beachman as Elsie Irene Beechem – a mixture to two separate sources. We can soon change it.

It is a shame we cannot yet get past Jacob Mowery of Elizabeth Waters (Scholl). I do not know what to think about the new surname. No type of record can prove much. Even a more common spelling in records cannot prove anything.

Thanks for all your help. We have Jim Mowery coming up in the next email. I will ask him a few questions on modern records in Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA

Do you live nearby or have the Mowerys into which you have married migrated away? If you go to the New Zealand White Pages G L Williams in Hamilton 82 Clyde Street you will find my email address. http://yellow.co.nz/whitepages/ or better:

http://yellow.co.nz/whitepages/new-zealand/Williams-G-L/1010...

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand

Morey 2073 Email 02 Reply

Dear Joann

Thank you for your answer.

Joannie Kistner sent me all this data:

Morey 1332 Email 11 Inbox: Notes for Mary Mowry wife of Oliver Perry Tietswort b. 28 Feb 1819: Moved to Bushnell, IL, USA

Morey 1417 Email 11 Inbox: Daniel Mowrey, Sr, was the son of Nicholas Mowrey who died in Antrim Twp, Pa. again, born abt 1775, I only have a brother, Jacob, no other info on him, and a sister, Nellie, who married a Mr. Bropst or Probst. These were handwritten notes of my grandmother and when I checked info from census on records and info I did find about the families she listed, she was right on the money with her information. Her notes also included families of Middleton, Arnwine, Albeck, Alderman, Hoover, Bucher, , Farley, Huber, Hummel, Kase, Mason, Levan, Robbins, and of course, Yeager, Kistner.

Children of William Riley Mowry and Agnes Still were: Jennie, who married Wellington Yeager; John Alberson William, who married (1) Martha Ellen Middleton (2) Annie Robbins; William Henry, died at 1 year old; Elmer Ellsworth, married Jennie Haughawout; Mary Elizabeth, who married Frank Alderman; and Samuel Hoover, who never married.

Morey 1417 Email 11 Inbox: Daniel Mowrey, Jr, who married Savilla Hess, she was born in 1834 and their children were: Clara, born 1860; Matilda, born 1865; William Henry, born 1869; Maude F., born 1872.

Your Nicholas Maurer 12 Aug 1748 was born in Rotterdam, NL. While he was still a baby his family set sail on the Edinburgh, mastered by James Russell. They sailed from Rotterdam to Portsmouth then across the Atlantic to Philadelphia arriving 15 Sep 1749 when his father signed the Oath of Allegiance to the British Crown. They were welcomed to Pennsylvania because they were hard working Protestants. The Roman Catholic French and Spanish navies tried to prevent the migration but often failed. Most migrants leaving Rotterdam (while America was still British), were from the Palatine area of Germany. They spoke High German

Maurer is German for stonemason. DeMaurere was one spelling of French origin it meant prince of the stone masonry house. They left France in the early 1600s as French Huguenot settling in Alsace-Lorraine, intermarrying with the German Jews, who settled in Lorraine, after their being forced to move, from Germany. The French Huguenot had to flee from Alsace Lorraine into the Palatine area where many starved and survivors later got into Holland. Johannes Michael Maurer migrated from Rotterdam and was among 380 passengers listed on the Edinburgh.

Maurer was anglicised as it was in guttural German a difficult name to pronounce, to many spellings.

Johan Michael Maurer was born 1725 Doeckingen, Heidenheim, Germany and married Maria Christina in Rotterdam. His parents were George Maurer and Emma Waldman born around 1600, possibly France or Alsace Lorraine if that area existed then.

You will need to take this story with a grain of salt as it is based on an overall migration. The fact that so many Moreys are brick walled in Pennsylvania during the mid 1700s is due to migration new research is bringing to light. The Glasgow was another vessel taking migrants to Philadelphia. Once the Americans started making their tea with cold sea water, non British ships carried passengers from two ports in Germany or Poland to several ports in America.

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand

Morey 2073 Email 01 Reply

Dear Donna and Jim

I am pleased this is new information to you and you are enjoying it. I was hoping you were receiving it. I am just piecing together your good work and the work of others and trying to unravel the threads of Mowry migration. You will note I change the spelling of Mowrey at a whim. This is to suggest we should not be mindset on one particular spelling of Maurer.

I am writing this to Mowery Rootsweb. It gets relayed to another board. If you are in Mowery Rootsweb, search the local message board for Coal and you should find a page from the Morey Notebook Series pertinent to this Mowery Clan..

For Mary J. Harris I just have some notes: Married second Edmund Bamford, a miner, and nothing else sorry.

The following notes Morey 1617 Email 19 Inbox is from DCMowery(at)aol.com. He died from an accidental injury to his hand while cleaning his gun. He was buried in the Antietam National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, MD. There are no dates for him buried at the Shamokin Cemetery so he might be listed there but his body remained at Antietam.

Thanks for tying Harvey Mowery

KLN Amelia Coal = KLN Maria Leiby

Here are my notes for Harvey Mowery b. 09 Nov 1847, son of Daniel, now living retired in the borough of Shamokin, was born 09 Nov 1847, at Shamokin. He served one hundred days. In 1866 Mr. Mowery located at his present home in Shamokin township, which formed part of the old Persing property. He has erected all new buildings upon his land, and his property known as the Brookside farm, is in up to date condition in every respect. He follows general farming and trucking, and has prospered steadily by dint of hard work and good management. Mr. Mowery is a good neighbour and well liked in his community, has served three years as township treasurer, is a very active member of the U.B. Church, which he has served as treasurer, trustee, class leader and Sunday school superintendent, and politically is a Prohibitionist. He is a man who possesses the courage of his convictions, and he has been influential in promoting the best interest of his locality. He is one of those interested in the Irish Valley Rural Bell Telephone company, which has seven miles of wire, put up in 1909 and 1910 by fourteen enterprising men of the valley.

Mr. Mowery married Mary C. He followed mining for a considerable period, being in the employ of the Philadelphia and Reading Company for about twenty years, retiring in the year 1910. Mr. Mowery owns a farm in Shamokin township which he rents out, and has some valuable holdings of real estate in Coal township, at the limits of Shamokin borough. His home is at No. 826 West Pine Street.

Mr. Mowery married Amelia Hartline, daughter of Joseph and Lydia (Rebuck) Hartline, and to them has been born a large family: Minerva, now the wife

(cont)

Notebook 05 1000

of Lewis Reed; William, who married Laura Hains and (second) Katie Noll; Daniel, who lives in New Jersey; Mary, wife of Harry Lake; Michael C., living at home; Edna, at home; Lucy, married to William Thomas; Malchom, who married Edna Persing; Ellis; Ruth; Clinton; Annie, deceased; Rosie, deceased; Edith and Ethel, twins; and a son that died in infancy.

Fraternally Mr. Mowery is an Odd Fellow, belonging to Black Diamond Lodge, No. 1092, and to the Encampment; and he is a member of Washington Camp No. 149, P.O.S. of A. In religious connection he is a member of the Reformed Church.

Finish of this family in that page of the Morey Notebook 05.

With so many surname spellings from different sources of obviously the same people FTW does not ring the bell if a match should crop up. It seems different factions of the same family have waltzed out of the home carrying a different surname with them, I suppose they all now think their particular spelling is the correct one. You would have noted the name change in the same pages of the Morey Notebook. I hope it does not drive the prohibitionist in you to drink.

Now Daniel W Mowery or Daniel H Mowery born 29 Aug 1873 Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA according to Paula Myers married Irene Beechem b. 1878 d. 1958 Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA.

They must have married Abt. 1905 and they had Malcolm Mowery 03 Nov 1906 SSN 207 03 9638 died Zip 17872 Dec 1981 Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA; William Peter Mowery 03 Apr 1907 SSN 178 05 0594 died Jun 1976 Zip 17872; Arthur Mowery 1921. He does not come up in the US SSDI; Bettye Irene Mowery 1921 to 2001 = My mother was Bettye Irene Mowery, born in Shamokin PA. Her uncles (who she grew up with were), Arthur, Malcolm, William Peter Mowery. Their mother was Irene Beechem and father was Daniel Mowery. Irene died in 1958 and I don’t know when Daniel died but my mother was little. She passed away 5 years ago at age of 80. If you have information about the Mowery family please pass it by and I’ll send you all the details I have.

The question to which I would like an answer is: how does Jacob Mowery born 28 Oct 1802 died 09 Apr 1875 Coal, Northumberland, PA, USA fit in with Daniel Maurer who married Mary G Yeager?

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand

I have run the two places together for genealogical reasons.

I had another look at Mahala in Coal and there are definitely two, one found 1850 aged 03 and 1860 aged 14, the other born 13 Aug 1867:

1846	Mahala Catherine	MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 03	Jacob	MOWREY	Elizabeth	WATERS B: PA F: PA M: PA	Coal Shamokin	Northumberland	PA	USA	PA CEN 1850 Coal 001	Dau	KLN Elizabeth Waters	Morey Forum Email 1423 01

1846	Mahala Catherine	MOWRER	F	B	1860 aged 14	Jacob	MOWRER	Elizabeth	WATERS B: PA F: PA M: PA	Coal Shamokin	Northumberland	PA	USA	PA CEN 1860 Coal 961	Dau	KLN Elizabeth Waters	Morey Forum Email 1423 01

1867	Mahala Catherine	MOWRY	F	B	13 Aug 1867	William	MOWRY	Rebecca	RUNKLE B: PA F: PA M: PA	Coal Shamokin	Northumberland	PA	USA	James Mowery KLN Elizabeth Waters	Morey Forum Email 2071 06

I will leave the latter in the family she is for the moment.

When looking at Coal Shamokin during the 1840s I find 24 records in the Morey database.
Dear Jim

Thanks for your reply. I am looking at Moreys of 235 spellings across the world and have 280,000 records in a 21 column database. Morey is more a Western European and southern English name. The first English Morey in New England was Roger Morey in 1628. Some of his children changed the name to Mowry and as they spread across the States it sometimes changed to Mowrey and Mowery. Mory, Morrey, Morry, Mori, Morea, Moree, etc. Prior to the American Revolution the English were promoting the migration of the Palatine people through Rotterdam to Philadelphia. These people were Protestant and solid workers who could stand on their own two feet. By the 1790 census 7% of the American population was of German descent. From Eastern France French Huguenot and French Jews found it uncomfortable in their home country, migrated into Alsace and Lorraine and in later generations into Palatine Germany when starvation was heralded by death and the need to migrate further. The French had names like De Maury and many other spellings. The Germans too had many spellings one being Maurer (Mason).

From Western France such as Rochelle French Huguenot felt the same pressure and got across the Channel to England. The Maury family living in Virginia today were French Huguenot via Somerset and Ireland.

Moreys and Mowrys from Rhode Island made their way into Pennsylvania and came across Maurers, etc from the Palatine area. Names mingled so much they sometimes changed into the other. A group of genealogists is teasing these strands of Moreys out and back to their origin.

I am the administrator of fourteen Morey message boards, Mowery being one, and linked to more. Every scrap of data from the 235 spellings goes into the Morey database held in most of the English speaking countries of the Western World, America, Australia, Canada, England, and New Zealand the last country to be colonised.

I am a fifth generation New Zealander. My Moreys came from Havant, Hampshire, England. If your Mowerys came from the same place we may be related. If your Mowerys migrated from Rhode Island they came from Drimpton, Dorset, England. If they arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam they were from Palatine Germany and so on. If they arrived after the American Revolution from Europe, they could be Dutch, Polish, German or English etc.

A group of us is working on the Maurer family of Palatine to Philadelphia where the name split into Mowrey which migrated to Ohio, Indiana, and Colorado; and Mowery which migrated to a different part of Ohio, while some stayed in Pennsylvania.

I am not certain if Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA is the correct location for your Mowery family, if Coal and Shamokin are two different towns or not. Data for Coal Shamokin has come to me from many different sources. Here Andrew Mowery has a father James Mowery found:

http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mowery/238.2/mb.ashx

William Mowery and Rebecca Runkle are found as Mowry in the 1880 census for Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA and their children are all with them except for Mahala Catherine Mowry born 13 Aug 1867 who is new to the Morey database. I think she is a daughter of Jacob Maurer.

The Morey Forum uses a clanning system, where a clan name is decided on. It starts with KLN for clan. We have 269 records of Moreys of about six spellings in Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA. At the moment your clan is KLN Eliza Waters owing its name to Elizabeth Waters who married Jacob Mowrey born 28 Oct 1802 Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA died 09 Apr 1875 Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA

They had at least eleven children some of which may have different clan names to be merged in time with your KLN Eliza Waters. One of their children William Mowrey born 26 Jun 1844 Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA died 18 Jan 1923 Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA

William Mowrey born 26 Jun 1844 married first Rebecca Runkle and had the eight children you have shown. He then married Anna Flicher Martin and had the six children you provided, the last of whom Daniel Windom Mowry born 05 Jan 1920 is your grandfather. Please give him my regards.

Jacob Mowrer born 28 Oct 1802 had 19 children – no television those days. He was B: PA F: PA M: PA 1850 aged 47 and 1860 aged 57 occupations at various times were; butcher, coal miner, farmer, innkeeper Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA

Here is the family in the 1850 census, Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA:

1802	Jacob MOWREY	M	B	1850 aged 47
1809	Elizabeth	WATERS	F	B	1850 aged 41
1831	Emeline	MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 18
1833	Catherine	MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 16
1834	Louisa MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 15
1837	Sarah MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 12
1839	Jacob MOWREY	M	B	1850 aged 11
1842	Susan MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 07
1844	William	MOWREY	M	B	1850 aged 06
1846	Mahala Catherine	MOWREY	F	B	1850 aged 03

Here is the family a decade later Coal Shamokin, Northumberland, PA, USA:

1802	Jacob MOWRER	M	B	1860 aged 57
1809	Elizabeth	WATERS	F	B	1860 aged 50
1844	William	MOWRER	M	B	1860 aged 16
1846	Mahala Catherine	MOWRER	F	B	1860 aged 14
1852	Malinda	MOWRER	F	B	1860 aged 07
1855	Lavinia M	MOWRER	F	B	1860 aged 04
1834	Catherine	MOWRER	F	B	1860 aged 25
1835	Jacob KOOPS	M	B	1860 aged 24

Jacob Koops born Wertemberg, Germany was a barman at the Mowrer Inn. Having had a look at Shamokin, it was first settled in 1835, so Jacob Maurer born 28 Oct 1802 was probably born elsewhere in Pennsylvania.

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand

Mowery of Shamokin Morey Notebook 05 0998

Morey 1996 Email 03 Inbox

Notebook 05 0998

Genealogical and Biographical Annals
of
Northumberland County, PA
Chicago
J.L. Floyd & Co.

1911

Mowery- This name is found in various forms here in Northumberland county, Mourer, Maurer, Mowery and Moury being common forms. This article pertains particularly to the three surviving sons of Daniel Mowery, Peter, Daniel W. and Harvey, the first and last named being residents of the borough of Shamokin, and Daniel W. living in Shamokin township, where he owns the valuable Brookside farm. All are worthy representatives of a name long and favourably known in this region.

The family came from Germany to this country, and first settled in Berks county, later moving to the Mahantango Valley, in Northumberland county. Peter Mowery, grandfather of the three brothers named, was born in the Mahantango Valley, and later settled near Edgewood Park at Bear Valley (Shamokin), where he was among the first settlers. Subsequently he removed to Locust township, Columbia County, where he followed farming until his death. His wife was Magdalena Loudelsleger, and both are buried in Columbia County. They were the parents of a large family: Michael, who died in Columbia county; John, who died in Jefferson county, Pa; Solomon, George and Peter, all three of whom died in Columbia county; Daniel; Sarah; Sophia; Fronie; Elizabeth; Leah; Sabina, and Catharine. The mother of this family had an experience typical of the time in which she lived. While they were living near Bear Valley she was attracted by a noise in the pig pen, and going to investigate found a bear trying to steal a pig. The Men being all away from the house, clearing the land, she attacked the animal with a long-handled fire shovel and killed it.

Daniel Mowery, son of Peter, was born at Bear Valley. In his earlier years he followed farming, but he later became engaged at mining, and he was killed in the mines in 1855, when 45 years old. He was interred in a small burial ground on the Mount Carmel road out from Shamokin. His wife, Mary (Yeager), daughter of John Yeager and his wife Sarah (McClow), of Columbia County, PA, is buried in the Shamokin Cemetery. They had the following children: John is deceased; Mary is the widow of John B. Snyder, of Shamokin; Caroline is deceased; Peter, Daniel W. and Harvey are mentioned below; Susan is the widow of Daniel Zimmerman; William died young; Lucy (deceased) married Washington Leiby and (second) Washington Fahringer.

Peter Moury, eldest surviving son of Daniel, was born 14 Nov 1842, in Shamokin. He received his education in the schools of Columbia County, was reared upon the farm, and in his young manhood learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed for some time at Shamokin and elsewhere in Northumberland County. In all he was engaged at his trade for about thirty years, being at the Big Mountain colliery about eleven years, and also at the Henry Clay, Nelson, Penna and Green Ridge collieries. Upon giving up his trade he was elected janitor of the McKinley school building, in Coal Township, in 1906, and has since filled that position which occupies all his time. He has long made his home in Shamokin, having built his present home, at No 1111 Walnut Street, in 1886. He is a respected citizen, well known in Shamokin and throughout Coal Township. In politics he is a Democrat, in religion, a Lutheran. Socially he holds membership in the I.O.O.F.

On 5 Jan 1868, Mr. Moury married Mary A. Moyer, who was born 10 Mar 1852, daughter of David and Catharine M. (Cherry) Moyer, and fifteen children have been born to their union, namely: Mary C., born 9 November 1868, married John A. Ritche; Daniel H. was born 29 Aug 1873; John W. was born 15 Jan 1875; Ida S., born 19 Nov 1876, married Wilson G. Yoder; Stella C. died in infancy; Clara E. born 10 July 1880, married Edward Hess; Alice W., born 13 Mar 1883, married Absalom Davis; Bertha E., born 18 July 1884, married Bert Goodman; Sarah M. died when five years old; Fannie A., born 6 Nov. 1888, died when eight years old; Florence M. born 17 Mar 1891, is at home; Carrie M. and Arthur E. died in infancy.

Daniel W. When nine years old he began to pick slate at the breaker, working thus one year. He then went to live with Daniel Keller, at Bear Gap, and while there enlisted for service in the Civil War, joining Company D, 95th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Captain Charles Grosh, of Lancaster, PA, the company being recruited from Lancaster county. He served one hundred days. In 1866 Mr. Mowery located at his present home in Shamokin township, which formed part of the old Persing property. He has erected all new buildings upon his land, and his property known as the Brookside farm, is in up to date condition in every respect.

Mr. Mowery married Amelia Hartline, daughter of Joseph and Lydia (Rebuck) Hartline, and to them has been born a large family: Minerva, now the wife of Lewis Reed; William, who married Laura Hains and (second) Katie Noll; Daniel, who lives in New Jersey; Mary, wife of Harry Lake; Michael C., living at home; Edna, at home; Lucy, married to William Thomas; Malchom, who married Edna Persing; Ellis; Ruth; Clinton; Annie, deceased; Rosie, deceased; Edith and Ethel, twins; and a son that died in infancy.

Fraternally Mr. Mowery is an Odd Fellow, belonging to Black Diamond Lodge, No. 1092, and to the Encampment; and he is a member of Washington Camp No. 149, P.O.S. of A.
Mowery Ebenezer of Napier, Bedford, PA, PA

Dear Gregory

Abenezer is the only spelling of the name amongst 235 spellings of Morey in a database of 260,000. In the greater scheme of things it does not yet matter if his father was James or John Ezekiel Mowery. Both were married to Mary Jane Cardiff. Let us call this Mowery clam KLN Mary Cardiff. The clan does exist in the Mowery database. It makes more sense for Ebenezer Mowery biblically to be son of John Ezekiel Mowery. The way you Americans make diminutives of miss spellings is amazing. William Henry Mowery born Abt. 1863 Manns Choice, Bedford, PA, USA married Barbara Ella Dempsey. By 1899 he was living at Upper Yoder near Johnstown, Cambria, PA, USA. His father was John Ezekiel Mowery. The Morey Forum was looking at this family over ten years ago – abt. 1998. John Ezekiel Mowery had a son John Ezekiel Mowery. This makes it more possible the elder was in fact James Morey and the biblical names came from the Welsh side. John Ezekiel Mowery the younger was born 17 Jul 1866 Terre Haute, Vigo, IN, USA. This sort of movement has a religious connotation. He died 1957 Johnstown, Cambria, PA, USA. He married Rose Mae Gardner. I looked for Eb in PA and found an obscure spelling of Ebenezer Mowery 1880 aged 05. His mother was Mary. They were living in Napier, Bedford, PA, USA. This was where FOL = PA CEN 1880 1098 258:

1843	Mary MOWERY	F	B	1880 aged 37
1864	William H	MOWERY	M	B	1880 aged 16
1867	Franklin	MOWERY	M	B	1880 aged 13
1869	Sarah MOWERY	F	B	1880 aged 11
1872	John Z MOWERY	M	B	1880 aged 08
1874	Ebenezer	MOWERY	M	B	1880 aged 05

You will recognise these people as being your Mowery family. Mary was a widow? So we have a birth year for your Abenezer Mowery. He may be in the USA SSDI. Mary Jane Cardiff was B: PA F: IRL M: PA. The person who pulled this Pennsylvania census data for me was Shelley (Moree) Woods, whose Morey origins were in France. She died on an aeroplane between Las Vegas and Ohio I think on a visit to her mother. We found her French Morey origins after her death.

I have looked for a 1870s Eb born anywhere in the world. Only the 1880 census shows him. Can you please send me the details of this family in the 1870 census? This will give James Mowery's birth year. Click on glloyddw and you will see my email address.

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum and Mowery Rootsweb Administrator
I saw this before in notes, I think this is Perry Tietsworth and Margaret Peggy Mowrey....from my grandmother's notes, I think they went to Illinois...not at home and cannot confirm these notes but I think she is the daughter of Nicholas Mowrey ...who also had sons Peter and Daniel...at that time, I think they were in Chambersburg, Pa. but not absolutely sure.....

my line is thru Daniel and William Riley Mowrey who married Agnes Still, daughter of Cornelius Still and lived in Columbia/Montour Co, Pa.
William Riley Mowrey and Agnes Still were the parents of several children, one being my great grandmother, Hannah Jane, who married Wellington Durant Yeager of Northumberland Co. Their daughter, Frances Ruth Ann, married Frank William Kistner of Northumberland/Montour Co., Pa.

The orginal post here is pretty old, so I'm crossing my fingers for a reply. I'm doing some research for Mowery friends who are desecended from Abenezer MOWERY and Mary MULVEHILL. Any information on their family would be appreciated. Specifically, looking for death information on the aforementioned. Thanks in advance.

Geoffrey,

Thanks for the reply. Your email address doesn't come up when I click on glloydww. It's just a box that limits a reply to 500 characters. I have a copy of the 1870 census. Lists James as what looks like 24 or 34 years old. Sort of sloppy. Decided (as did the indexers) that it probably says 34 (b. abt 1836). Ebenezer or Abenezer was referred to as "A.B." in life, so I'd be inclined to go with Abenezer, especially if that's what it says on his death certificate mentioned earlier in this thread.

I have AB in the 1900, 1920, and 1930 censuses. Can't find him in 1910. Be glad to share this.

By the way, I'm doing this for a close friend, so it's not my family. Through inter-marriage they've become convinced that their line was Irish. I've tended toward believing that they most likely are really descended from the MAURER/MOURER family (German). As you probably know, many MAURERs anglicized to MASON because MAURER means bricklayer and other MAURERS became MOWRYs or MOWERYs.

Rather than putting my email address here in text, please go to the PANORTHU GenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~panorthu/ I'm the County Coordinator and my email address is at the bottom of the page. I'm excited to discuss this further with you.

Best regards,

Greg

Hi Geoffrey,

We have Mahala Catherine Mowery born 8/13/1867, died 12/5/1872. Now for the interesting info: You mention Jacob(1838),the brother of William(1844), to be a Civil War veteran. This would make my grandfather Daniel W.(1920), the last surviving nephew of a Civil War veteran! WOW, how cool! Did Jacob have any children befor he died? As for Harvey, we don't seem to have any records on him. I will run it by my grandfather though.

Jim

Hi Geoffrey,

Yes, I knew of Great Grandad's(William) birthday, but I did not have any dates for Rebecca. The marriage certificate only listed the day they were married. You spelled his father's last name Mowrey?? Was that correct or a mis spelling? The fist child born was, Lovesa Alice(12/15/1861,Clara Elizabeth(7/5/1865),Mahala Catherine(8/13/1867),William Nelson(4/3/1870),Susana Edna(8/31/1872),Jacob Albert(12/9/1874),Chareles Henry(11/8/1876), Joseph Oscar(6/12/1879),Margaret Veronica(8/28/1881),John Herbert Franklin(5/3/1905),Sara Rebecca(9/21/1906),Cora Gertrude(8/3/1908),James Leon(12/27/1909),William Harold(4/19/1912), and Daniel Windom(1/6/1920), who is still alive and my Grandfather. The last six children were from William's second marriage to Anna Flicher Martin in 1904. Are you related to anyone on this list? I don't know who Andrew is, but he may be a relation. My grandfather was looking for information on his Father and Grandfather Jacob if you have any. He was to young to know them.

Thanks, Jim

My Grandfather is so happy to know the background of his father. After looking at the records we have, I think you are correct that Mahala was William's sister. Here is some information on the area, since this is where my Grandfather was born. Coal, is actually Coal Township, Pa. It is located outside of the city of Shamokin, Pa. Northumberland is the county. Do you have any information on William(1844), in regards to service in the American Civil War?? Thanks again for the help.

Jim

Geoffrey-

I have been working with some information I have which identifies parents and spouses and have grouped many of the Mowerys together over the past 2 days. It has all the many spellings of the name. With your help through the info you've been placing here, I've been able to make connections and go further back with our line. I didn't list the Mowery/Beechem family, but will go back, put that together and send it to you. I'll also see if I can answer you question.

You've been a big help to me.

Thanks again,
Donna

Geoffrey-

I'm enjoying all this good information you and Jim are passing back and forth! If I ever saw or heard that Mary J. Harris remarried after Jacob b. 1838 died, I don't remember it. What information do you have about her second marriage to Edmund Bamford?

Jim-

I guess all this makes us "cousins" through Jacob's bro William b. 1844.

Look forward to hearing more from ya'll!

Donna
