Hi!
My Mowry and Alden lines are not close. I am a past president of the Mowry Family Association. The recent reunion was in North Smithfield, Rhode Island this past June. Notable Mowry descendants include Lucille Ball, U.S. Senators and U.S Representatives Nelson W. Aldrich and Lowell P. Weicker, Jr., the latter also being a Governor of Connecticut; and Aldrich's grandson U.S. Vice President Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller. Weicker like myself is a descendant of Roger Mowry's daughter Mehitable wife of Eldad Kingsley.
My Alden line is from Alden's son David and David's wife Mary Southworth, their daughter Priscilla wife of Samuel Chesebrough. I belong to the Alden Kindred www.alden.org ,.
Notable Alden descendants are Presidents John Adams, and son John Quincy Adams, Patriot Samuel Adams, Vice President Dan Quayle, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and actor Orson Welles.
These lines are through my maternal grandmother Harriet Elizabeth Congdon, first wife of James Bard Bill. However her Mowry line merges with Alden line through her parents. Her father Abram Eugene Congdon has the Mowry line while Flora Dean Miner, Congdon's wife has the Alden line.
Relatively yours,
Scott Bill Hirst
401-377-4643
scottbillhirst@yahoo.com
20 Maple Court Ashaway,RI 02804-1300
Alden Descendants in Mn/WI

Does anyone know anything about Susannah Mowry (married Charles H. Thomson) or Abigail Mowry (married George Wilson) who moved from PA to WI in 1830s?

They were sisters and their parents were Abigail Alden who married Ezekiel Mowry. They are part of the Mowry family related to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. Here's the descendant path: John Alden-Jonathan Alden-Andrew Alden-Prince Alden-Mason Fitch-Abigail Alden. Abigail and "Zek" had 11 children--Susannah was the daughter we're related to, but having trouble linking Susannah married Charles H. Thomson (and her sister Abigail who married George Wilson) coming to Osceola, WI in the early 1800s.

Anyone related or know a connection? Thanks much!
Morey 2171 Email 04 Reply

Thanks for the new data: Lydia Smalley. You must descend from Roger Morey, but we need to prove it. Family group sheets contain mostly names and you must have already transcribed them. Could you please send it in electronic form rather than scans or hard copies? And the letter from Vance's granddaughter, K. Miller, could you transcribe that too, just the genealogical data.

If you are on FB, you can find me at glloyddw or Morey Genealogy and attach a scan to that. This will allow all to see the letter. You can attach a file to a message.

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealabd

Thanks so much for looking up what you have. And you being down in Kiwi Land. A wonderfully beautiful place. Some of your info seems to be similar, but others don't. I have a letter from a granddaughter of Vance's, K. Miller, that I could try to send you. She wrote to my father, but he never replied to her, and I did not know about it until 10 yrs later. She also, included some family group sheets that a genealogist in PA had done. Elias Mowry was married to a Lydia Smalley. Would you like the info, scaned copies, or hard copies?

Knowing a little of American frontier history, I had surmised that my Mowry came from New England before they were located in Rensselaer Co., NY. We shall see.

The Sabins history is fairly complete. David Sabin moved from NY to work on a turnpike in Bradford Co., PA in 1836. As you may know, Bradford was divided a few times as new counties were made.

ISAAC MOWRY and SARAH SABIN

Morey 2169 Email 04 Inbox

This has been a brick wall for a long time

The Morey Forum has McNett, Lycoming, PA, USA, rather than Bradford, PA, USA and Alonzo Mowry and Annetta Mowry are new to this family, but Alonzo Moury is not new to the Morey Forum with Isaac and Sarah in different forms

Let us call this Mowry clan; KLN Sarah Saben. I prefer Sabin as MS Word recognises the name when set to UK or NZL English. But we are in USA where many words have been misspelt including the one I have just written, and tit bits used as tid bits. I suppose the lovely little English garden birds became mammary under the Puritan eye across the grey and stormy Atlantic 

The first tit bit is Ren County, NY, USA – Rensselaer County, named after the Dutch jeweller, hives of the two English Morey clans who just happen to be 90% of the USA Moreys today, KLN RI George 30% and KLN RI Roger 60%

These two clans run in different circles. George Morey is known to have descendants who have misspelt his name rarely, while Roger Morey has thousands who have, and when looking at the psychosis of these two clans, though there are a few multi millionaires amongst KLN RI Roger today, in the pioneering era living in the sod houses on the farms across the prairies were his lot, while the bank manager in the distant towns descended from George Morey.

If this were true for three reasons your, Moreys tend towards Roger Morey the neatherd from Drimpton, in Dorset, England. His Moreys were likely tenant farmers (peasants) on farms owned by the bishop of Salisbury across Dorset, while George Morey was a weaver by trade and may have had some education to apply it. The migration of Moreys westward often jumped to new towns named in honour of the towns from which they came. Pioneers moved together where sons were sent out first.

The names Earl and Paul to transcribers may look similar while, Alonzo is often quite readable, and Annetta in different forms might be Aurella or something.

Take the, PA CEN 1850 838 069, for example in Mehoopeny, Wyoming, PA, USA, where there are two Moury families on the same page, the heads both born NY and thus possible brothers, where Isaac Moury was a carpenter and Elias the elder was a farmer.

We must concentrate on Isaac Mowry where FOL = PA CEN 1850 838 069:

1806	Isaac MOURY	M	B	1850 aged 44
XXXX	Sarah SPOUSE	F	B	1850 aged YY
1841	Paul MOURY	M	B	1850 aged 09
1844	Alonzo MOURY	M	B	1850 aged 06
1837	Aurella MOURY	F	B	1850 aged 03

Do you recognise that family above?

It is KLN Mehoopeny at the moment. It may pay to have a look at that census again. In the meantime I am going to make Sarah the spouse Sarah Sabin.

That means part of KLN Mehoopeny = KLN Sarah Saben.

And the old KLN Mehoopeny Isaac Moury was born in Rensselaer, NY, USA as was his probable brother Elias Moury 1850 aged 53. There is another brother, Nicholas Mowry. I am not certain from which source he came. Here is Elias Moury:

1797	Elias MOURY	M	B	1850 aged 53
XXXX	Lydia SPOUSE	F	B	1850 aged YY
1831	Clemanda?	MOURY	F	B	1850 aged 19
1833	Philena MOURY	F	B	1850 aged 17
1839	Pashena?	MOURY	F	B	1850 aged 11
1841	Samantha	MOURY	F	B	1850 aged 09
1846	Reuben	MOURY	M	B	1850 aged 04
1848	Charles?	MOURY	M	B	1850 aged 02

My notes for Sarah Sabin: Morey 1370 Email 02 Inbox: David Saben (b. 1793) in my ancestry. He married a Martha Kendall (b. 1794). They had nine children including Edward who had married a Margaret. Evidently as often happens, the surname was missplled as Saben rather than Sabin. One of Edward's sisters married my GGGrandfather, Isaac Mowry, and her sister Morey 1370 Email 02 Inbox married Isaac's brother, Nicholas. From what I read the Sabins were a very old family. Isaac had five sons and two daughters. His son Earl married Hortensia Griswold, and they had four children.

The next tit bit you supplied was possible parents Jonah Mowry and Roby Mowry. So very rarely are these names found in the Morey database. Anyway we found the source for Nicholas Mowry as Morey 1370 Email 02 Inbox. Jonah Mowry and Roby Mowry would have been his parents too. Elias Mowry was also a brother. I wonder if he has been transcribed for Nicholas. You must have a good look at that census.

There is no couple remotely near Jonah and Roby.

John and Abigail

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Hello

Administrator of this Mowry Board here, and Convnor of the Morey Forum Worldwide.

Here is a start:

Morey 1324 Email 13 Inbox:

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/mB2.2ACEB/132.1

This steps sideways, but at the moment the father of Isaac Mowry is shown as Jacob Mowry. Roby (Spouse) Mowry is new to the Morey Forum.

Message Board Post: I have now found info from my dad's family.!! Hugh was my grandfather. A wonderful man he was. Grandad Mowry (Earl) moved his family from PA taking the train by way of Niagara Falls to western NE. Grandad had a sister, Ada (married to Al Cook) already living there. Farming on the homestead during drought and Indian uprisings was not conducive to survival. Grandma died when Hugh was 12 from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Granddad went to Wyoming to do timber work leaving the kids in NE. Otis was with Grandad some of the time. Hugh, Lester (Spud), and Bertha nearly starved with only a few potatoes and flour to eat. Somehow Hugh was asked to play his violin at a dance and earned more money that night that he had all year. He saved his money and one day he and Spud drove a wagon all by themselves to Saratoga, WY. They homesteaded south of town. Hugh had a cattle ranch, until Harvey took it over in the 1950's.

Hugh did not marry a Buffon. He married a local girl named Mabel Claire Brewer in 1900.

Morey 1326 Email 02 Inbox: Earl Mowry - one of 5 brothers & 3 sis

Morey 1399 Email 08 Inbox: Earl was born in NY and he moved to Bradford Co. PA as a child. Earl and his wife moved to western NE in the 1880's. His mother, Sarah Sabin Mowry, and sister Ada and her husband moved to the Grant area as well. Some family members are buried there including Fernando. Fernando's son, Vance, lived in Limon, CO, all his life.

Kind regards, Geoffrey Williams
Morey Forum New Zealand

Does any one have any info about the parentage of Isaac Mowry, b. Sept. 14, 1806. in Ren. Co., NY? He died June 13, 1874 in Bradford Co., PA. In 1840 he married Sarah Sabin (Saben) in Bradford Co. They had Earl, Alonzo, Annetta (m. Henry Buzzard), Mahlon, Fernando,Addison, and Ada (m. Albert Cook in NE).Sarah, Mahlon, Earl, and Fernando moved to NE in the 1880's. Earl later moved to WY. I have a letter from one of Fernando's ggranddaughter that states that Isaac's parents were Jonah and Roby Mowry. Does anyone know? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Kenon, I believe your Nathanial Mauser (Maurer) is the son of Joseph Maurer and Catherine Livingood found on the 1850 Ohio, Brown Cty., Perry Township census. Joseph Maurer's marriage certificate says Joseph Mouser m. Catherine Livingood Jan. 19, 1820 by Thomas Ross, JP Brown Cty., Ohio. The 1860 Brown Cty census has Joseph Mouser and his family(except for those children that were already married). Catherine dies soon after and Joseph remarries. His next wedding is: Joseph Mowery m. Delilah Girton Nov. 20, 1862 by Peter Vandervort, JP Brown Cty., Ohio.

Elisabeth Mowery is found on the 1880 Brown Cty., Sterling Township census as a widow. Her father's birthplace is just a mistake of the census taker. Nathanial must have died between 1870 and 1880.

I am not a relative of this Maurer family. My Mowrers came from Highland Cty., Ohio. As in my family, the Maurer name has so many variations it is hard to keep track.

Andrea

Maybe, Kenon. I'm descended from and related to the Maurer/Mowrer/Mowrey family. Have you checked to see if the "Mauser" was a misspelling of "Maurer?" Eastern Brown County was a part of Adams County (the western portion was a part of Clermont) until 1817. My Maurer/Mowrer ancestors were in Sprigg Township (Adams) which abuts Huntington (Aberdeen) and Liberty Township (Adams) which abuts Byrd. Byrd, Huntington, Jackson, and Eagle Townships (Brown County) early settlers records may show them as living in Adams County -- in particular along Eagle Creek.

My research shows that "ein gutes Deutschman" Peter Maurer was a tavernkeeper in Manchester, Ohio, in 1798. He had three sons Mowrer/Maurer/Mowrey (Peter born abt 1802, Christian born 1805, Jacob born about 1806, and Nicholas born about 1809) all of whom seem to have settled in Sprigg Township (Adams), and he had a brother John who does not seem to appear in the Adams records. I'm descended from Christian Maurer's son Peter (1802) and haven't found a Nathaniel yet in that line.

Soooo -- if Nathaniel Mauser is really Nathaniel Maurer, he probably descended from Christian(1805), Jacob (1806) or Nicholas (1809). My best guess!

Hope this helps.

M.

Thanks for the reply!
I found Nathaniel Mauser (b.abt.1827 Ohio) and Elizabeth Concklin/Conklin (b.abt.1830 Ohio) marriage in Brown County, Ohio 17 March 1847 and found them in census' 1850, 1860 and 1870 in Brown County but could not find them anywhere in 1880. In 1900 census I found Elizabeth Mowry 69 yrs old in Brown County and her grandson Frederick Bingamon with her, living next to her daughter Elizabeth b.1856 and her husband Lafayette Bingamon and family.
Couldn't find Nathaniel or Elizabeth's death records!
Are you related to Nathaniel? Do you know who his parents were?

Thanks again, Kenon

Mowry: Stamford, Fairfield, CT, USA

Dear 123jeaniealogy

Without Clovis Mowry found yet in the 1920 and 1930 censuses, he is the only Mowry in Stamford, Fairfield, CT, USA. KLN RI Roger is Clan Rhode Island Roger. It is a Morey Forum way of binding Morey individuals to families. Nearly two thirds of the American Moreys are KLN RI Roger and one third is KLN RI George. There are thousands of other clans which are being merged by Moreys and Mowrys worldwide. My Morey clan (KLN Parua Bay) got no where near America having sailed from England to New Zealand. KLN RI Roger started so far early 1600s in Drimpton, DOR, ENG. Roger Morey after who the clan is named was a neatherd with the Dorchester Company in Massachusetts. The town was called Naumkeag, well swallowed up by Boston these days. Roger Morey migrated to Providence, RI, USA, owned the Morey Inn and later died there. Some of his children kept Morey, others chose Mowry. There are many names devolved from these two; Mory, Mowrey are two.

Locations in England seem to determine the spelling of the name. Along the Saxon Shore the spelling is predominantly Morey. Mine came from Havant, Hampshire and so far are not related to Roger Morey of Drimpton, Dorset. But there are Moreys in Australia and New Zealand from Dorset and Devon who might be. Those from Stamford, Fairfield, CT, USA are nondescript clans, Mori and Morey with KLN Kath McGrath being prevalent. Broadening the search to the county of Fairfield, CT, USA, brings up a lot of feral Moreys (not clanned), a few KLN RI George. Early last century a few KLN RI Roger Mowrys can be found in Bridgeport, Fairfield, CT, USA where the parents were Cassius William Mowry and Anne Frances Sheehan

Your input is worth a lot. So far among 260,000 records of the name Clovis Mowry is only one man. I would be very pleased to receive from you any data you have on a Clovis Mowry of any spelling in the world.

I was trying to find the main currents in Long Island Sound. The Hudson River may pull the Connecticut River in an anti clockwise direction around Long Island. In New Zealand and the Bay of Plenty along the sub tropical South Pacific Shore bodies take three weeks to get washed onto a beach. The waters of Long Island South are probably cooler and it may take longer. So Clovis Mowry may have died along the Rhode Island shore. There may be an obituary for him. He was single in 1900.

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand
Dear 123jeaniealogy

Clovis Mowry was definitely KLN RI Roger and son of Leander Scott Mowry and Malona Smith. The last the Morey Forum has of him is in the census 1900 aged 39 living with his father and sister Etta B Mowry (born 01 Mar 1877 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USA) at Milford, Worcester, MA, USA where he was single, occupation farmer. He has not been found in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. He must have been on the Long Island Sound side of Cape Cod prior to his death

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey Forum New Zealand
Dear Katelyn

Can you please supply a birth date for your George Mowry, his wife and marriage date, and his parents if known and locations to narrow down the search. The Mowry name in America has come from several countries, France, Switzerland, Germany. In some families it started as Maurer, but if it came from Rhode Island, it started as Morey in England and changed in New England.

So far the Mowrys from Quemahoning, Somerset, PA, USA just appear from seemingly nowhere.

Kind regards Geoffrey Williams
Morey Forum

Morey 1737 Email 09 Reply

Dear Janet

There were three Morton Mowrys in Rhode Island two buried Burrillville 032 and one buried Smithfield N044. One of those in Burrillville 032 may have been a child with no dates or age given. The one buried Smithfield N044 was born 1793 and died 25 Feb 1854. The other one buried Burrillville 032 Morton J Mowry was born 16 Mar 1823 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USAand died 13 Feb 1897 Burrillville, Providence, RI, USA. I do not think he married

Jeremiah Mowry married Elizabeth Morton and had Jeremiah Mowry born 06 May 1786 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USA and died 16 Jul 1872. Jeremiah Mowry who married Elizabeth Morton had a son Morton Mowry too born Abt. 1790 who supposedly married Rachel Mowry and had Joseph Mowry born 20 Jun 1820 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USA and died 12 Dec 1908 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USA. He married Mary Elizabeth Mowry 01 Nov 1860 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USA. This couple had seven children, the last of whom Avis Elsie Mowry died 17 Jul 1981 at Woonsocket, Providence, RI, USA.

The Jeremiah Mowry born 06 May 1786 Smithfield, Providence, RI, USA and died 16 Jul 1872 known familiarly as Esquire Jerry a farmer married 30 Apr 1809 Elizabeth Steere and amongst their ten children had Morton J Mowry 16 Mar 1823.

Just to keep things simple Esquire Jerry Mowry married second Rachel Esten, and in the 1850 census (RI CEN 1850 843 274) we find Jeremiah Mowry 1850 aged 64 matching 06 May 1786, Rachel Esten 1850 aged 45, Rachel Mowry 1850 aged 28, and Morton Mowry 1850 aged 26, matching Morton J Mowry 16 Mar 1823. Jeremiah Mowry and Elizabeth Steere had a daughter Rachel Mowry born 23 Nov 1821matching Rachel Mowry 1850 aged 28. So in the 1850 census we have husband and second wife and two unmarried children to the first wife.

So the RI CEN 1850 843 274 is a red herring and the only Morton Mowry to marry Rachel Mowry was the son of Jeremiah Mowry and Elizabeth Morton. While Rachel Mowry was the daughter of Daniel Mowry and Catherine Steere

Kind regards, Geoffrey
Morey 1369 Email 02 Inbox: Looking for descendants of early settlers from the "Valley Breeze", 19 Jan 2006: North Smithfield - Houses and places of worship were well established, all linked by an extensive network of county roads, when General Assembly members meeting in Newport in February 1731 set off the town of Smithfield from Providence, creating a 73-square-mile parcel that would be later split into today's North Smithfield, Smithfield, Lincoln and Central Falls. A month later, on 17 Mar 1731, settlers of the farming outpost held their first official meeting in the home of Valentine Whitman Jr. on the old Great road in today's Lincoln. That was 275 years ago. To mark the occasion, Patricia Choiniere, chair of the Friends of the Valentine Whitman House, is organising a commemorative meeting in late March. She's hoping leaders of the present-day communities will gather in the 1696 house to recall the event within the same walls of that first organisational meeting. She has also put out a call to descendents of the original town leaders listed in an accounting of that meeting. They include Thomas Steere, John Arnold, Capt.
Roger Morey

Dear Amanda'

The earliest Morey in New England arrived on the Abigail. He was Roger Morey of Drimpton, DOR, ENG:

What do we know or can guess about Roger Morey? He was amongst over nine hundred individuals or families who migrated to New England before the end of 1633. Most ships left from the West Country as battling down the English Channel was a tough experience and fare-paying employers did not want any money wasted on someone who might jump ship. The months of May and June would have been the predominant times of arrival having embarked February and March. This was to give time to get established and get some work out of the employees before the darkness of Winter encroached. Freemanship in our past has meant several things but in Salem it presupposed church membership and attaining the age of twenty-one. Morey men marry at the age of twenty-five. British people usually became church members at the age of sixteen and by fourteen were allowed to choose a guardian and witness documents. Let us start at Drimpton again: The first mention is of a piece of farmland owned by a man called Dreama an old English name. Records of the 13th Century spell the name Drameton; Dremintun; Dremyton and Drempton. In the reign of Henry VIII Osbert de Dremeton held a virgate (a peasant holding) in Dremeton valued at 5 shillings per annum. In this area Roger Morey was born 18th May 1610, and young at heart, a touch of Puritan by faith and farmer by trade during 1628 set foot on his path to Weymouth and the waiting "Abigail". She was ready to sail to the New World with emigrants and farm animals and goods of all description. The Dorchester Company employed Roger and it was his job to feed and water the sheep and cattle. The master of the little vessel was Henry Gaudens. Sailing on the 20th June 1628, it was a good crossing and Roger made Naumkeag on the 6th of September, with about sixty fellow settlers including Captain John Endecott the new governor for London's Plantation. (Unloading animals, building houses burying wives and children etc. all in Morey Migration.)

Roger Morey sailed from Bristol or the IOW Nov 1630 on the “Lyon” and landed at Naumkeag Feb 1631. This sailing of the “Lyon” had only 26 passengers and the rest was loaded withsupplies and livestock.

In records of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Roger Morey is mentioned on a list of freemen in Salem 18th May 1631. This is the day some records show his arrival at Boston from the Isle of Wight, HAM, ENG. I suspect he had returned to ENG to pick up sheep and cattle and possibly assist a landowner in his move to the New World. This was the year he became a member of the Salem church, and sometime in 1634 he married Mary Johnson at Roxbury, Norfolk, USA. This town is now a southern residential section of Boston, Suffolk, MA, USA. Prior to becoming part of the city of Boston in 1868, it was a township in Norfolk, MA, USA, located between Boston and Dorchester. Early spellings include Rocksbury, Roxburie, and Rocsbury; the town was named probably in reference to its rocky site. Puritan immigrants who came with Governor John Winthrop founded the town in 1639. Early records of the town of Providence show Roger Morey could sign his name, while in other documents Mary made her mark. Their first son Roger duly arrived in 1635 at Salem, Essex, but sadly for his parents and all involved young Roger died within the year. On the 2nd March 1636 he made an agreement with the townsfolk to look after their cattle for seven shillings per beast for the season, which was from the 1st April to the 1st November and he was Neatherd for the season of eight months from the 5th April 1636. Each day, one hour after sunrise at the gate of the pen on the western exit of the common, Roger started work taking the cattle to pasture. Any owner, who did not have his herd ready needed to drive them out himself to Roger, whose job was to carefully look after them and return the beasts safely. In the meantime the owners tended their crops, built houses, sheds and fences and built roads. It is not likely the herds were very large and probable Roger Morey was on horseback and had several cattle dogs. The Eastern Woodlands forest was being felled for the making of farms and woodcutters were hard at work. Chips flew high into the air, English grass seed was being sown around the smouldering stumps. Bullock teams were being used to drag the heavy logs to the pitsaw. And cross cutters docked timber into post and rail lengths ready for the splitters.

Among the Salem land grantees of 1636 Roger received forty or fifty acres next to Mr Cole. Records of the First church of Salem show, late in 1836 he removed himself as member. (This is significant but Roger Williams was well gone.) Salem town records show he had fifty acres laid out 20th February 1637. And on the 14th August 1637, he requested a spot of land by the Estye family property. He was granted three quarters of an acre of marsh on Christmas Day 1637. He had a household of five. And 20th July 1638 he was granted a strip of meadow of two and a half acres and one and a half acres of upland. He remained one of the colony's neatherds, looking after the cattle both in the paddock during the hot summer days and the neathouse during the long winters. This work lasted up to 1641. On the 25th January 1641 from Salem he was on the petition jury of the Essex Quarterly Court. Five years later he moved to Lynn where he is found during 1646. In a warrant to the constable of Lynn on the 29th December 1646 Roger was a witness at the Essex Quarterly Court. During 1649 in Essex Quarterly Court records, mention is made of where Roger Morey's old house stood, referring perhaps to his prior removal from Salem to Lynn. Mrs Lydia Bankes sued Roger for debt in June 1650. And by 1652 he was in Providence, RI, USA. Records of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations reveal he was an Inn Keeper in Providence by 1655, and Providence constable. Providence town records show at his request, land was laid out for him early in 1656. He entered in town books he had bought ankers of strong spirits from Mr Frogmorton and on 21st July 1656 he entered two ankers of liquors, on 27th October 1656 three ankers of liquors, in December two barrels of sack. And by the 27th of August 1656, he had a house lot laid out on the hill next to Robert Williams' meadow. According to depositions of Edward Inman, Roger Williams' servant John Clawson is said to have complained of men such as Roger Morey. This was on the occasion of John Clawson's violent death. At the Quarter Court 27 January 1657, Roger was among a group of men who were empowered to treat Indians and lay claim to meadow at Lokusgussuck and clear the land for the town. He was selected as a juryman to attend General court Trials at Warwick in 1657. The early records of the town of Providence show in 1657 the Rhode Island Treasurer was ordered to pay Roger Morey one shilling and sixpence out of the treasury for the day's firing and house room. At the town meeting 01 October 1657 Roger was chosen as administrator of the estate of William Robinson in Providence, October 1657. On the 15th of January 1658 he bought a house lot and four acres from Robert Colwell and sold it to Thomas Olney senior of Providence 19th March the next year. On 06 August 1658 he testified to the births of his children, Bethia, Thomas and Hannah. On 27 April 1659 Roger faced the townsfolk and acknowledged he had sold the house in which Robert Colwell lived to Robert. On the 7th of April 1660 he was granted six acres of land and three acres of meadow in exchange for land he had been previously granted. On the 12th June 1660 he sold ninety acres of land outside Providence to John Acres of Dorchester. On 25 November 1660 Henry Neale, carpenter of Braintree sold Roger everything he had in Providence including the house, which had been purchased from Daniel Comstock. On 3rd February 1661 Roger sold to William Carpenter the right of commonage, which previously came with his land. On the 4th May 1661 Samuel Comstock's widow, Anne Smith of Providence sold Roger four acres in the row of houses in the north part of Providence, adjoining land he had previously bought. Later Roger served as Commissioner and he was selected for jury service in February 1661. He was one of six men chosen to hear cases in Providence during 1662 and later was frequently a Providence juryman. He sold Robert Colwell's right of commonage to William Carpenter of Pautuxett on the 22nd December 1662. In the division on the Eastside of the Seven-mile line, Roger drew lot number fourteen on the 18th of February 1665. On the 3rd of June 1665 Timothy Brookes revealed, Roger Morey had promised the satisfaction of an estimated twelve acres worth a certain sum of money to Eldad Kinsley for part of Mehittabel Morey's portion to Kinsley on her marriage. During the cold Winter and on the 5th of January 1666 Roger died - I presume aged fifty-five. Although Roger had made his wife his executrix, on his death she ultimately refused administration of his insolvent estate. Later she did accept administration, but neither will nor inventory survived. As early as 1677 a review of the town books, which survived King Philip's war revealed the administration papers and bond were missing. Mary Morey seems to have been an ineffectual administratrix, for son Jonathan claimed as son and heir apparent, before a Providence town meeting, he had taken possession of twelve acres of upland, which had been his Father's right

Kind regards, Geoffrey Williams

geoffrey.williams@xtra.co.nz

Curious Death of Clovis Mowry

I am no relation to Clovis Mowry, but a curious researcher, and I hope this information helps someone researching the Mowry family of Rhode Island.

I was looking through death records in Stamford, CT and came across this information for a buriel in Potters Field/Burials in unknown cemetery:

Mowry, Clovis, born Apr. 28, 1861, died about Apr. 36 Remains found in Long Island Sound Age 75.

(one can then assume the date this information was recorded is 1936.)

Would this be the Clovis Mowry of Rhode Island, as shown in One World Tree, with parents Leander Scott Mowry and Malona Smith?

(Might the ocean current have drifted his body down to Long Island Sound? Or maybe he lived down this way in the later years of his life?)

Pardon me, but what does "KLN" mean?

Verifying your information, I see your Clovis in the Milford, MA 1904-1905 City Directory:
Clovis, farmer, boards Leander S. Mowry's, Congress (street)

For what it's worth, there are other instances of a Clovis Mowry showing up in RI City Directories and the US 1930 census, with birth date abt. 1862. Perhaps he was living near relatives?

Considering he was found deceased in the southern waters of Long Island Sound, perhaps he had relatives in Stamford, CT or one of the shoreline towns.
I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if you had any information in your files about a Robert Mowry who was born in Nebraska sometime around 1896 - 97. He was my great grandfather and except for information on the 1920 census we can't find anything further back about him. We know that he married my great grandmother Genevieve around 1918 - 19 and they had at least two daughters: Roberta and Sadie (the 1920 census lists another daughter Genevieve who we had no knowledge of: she would have been born in 1919). Any info about Robert would be appreciated.

Re: Mowery Family Tree

I am from the line of Jacob and Catherine's 21 children, I had no idea there were that many, my family tree only shows the direct line. Also my tree had Johannes Maurer (feb 12, 1763)'s father listed as Michael Maurer, so it's nice to have that corrected. any mention of a Michael Maurer in your histories?

Mowry/Davis Family Texas

My dad, Taft Davis 1908-1969, had a sister, Mary Ann Davis 1906-1996. She married Loyd Wilbur Mowry. I know Mary died in Arizona, but was buried in Texas where most of her siblings are buried. I would like to have the name of Loyd's parents for my Davis genealogy.
Any help would be appreciated.
Linda Davis Ollis

Re: MOWRY, Elizabeth b.July 1856 in Ohio

Kenon -- my Mowrey, Mowry, Mowrer, Maurer relatives are from Adams County (east of Brown) and there is enormous variation in their names. When I was searching for my great-grandmother who we thought was a "Mowery," I could never find her. When I inherited her photo album -- Mowrer -- I found she had written her name. In all truth, all of these names appear in Adams County and all seem to be related. The name changes sometimes even in the same generation. Their ancestors were early settlers of Ohio (Adams County) named Maurer who came from Pennsylvania - soooooooooo -- search the Adams census records using all the variations.
