I had an Uncle Paul, who unfortunately recently passed away, his last name was Dailey and he married my father's (Bryan James Moylan Jr) sister, Patricia Moylan.

They both lived in Rochester and so did other members of their family, in fact some still do. My aunt Pat now lives back in Hornell NY but she is from Elmira originally.

I believe that may be my grandfather pictured on the horse in the first reply.

I too am trying to figure out more about the Moylan's. I have other contacts that would know more if you want to contact me....thanks!

I got a replay back from your email stating you wear out for a while and would be back in a few weeks. If there isn't any direct connection maybe you can point me towards people who might have some connection with my line

M.
Hi Bill,

Would you happen to have a Sara Moylan / Milan / Mullin in your tree ?? I would assume she was born bet 1765-1770 and she married William Ryan

Her daughter =Catherine was born 27 June 1785- Bruff. Catherine married Patrick Quain and their first child was Jeremiah (b. 1801- Partickswell Limerick). Jeremiah married
Bridget Keyes abt 26 Feb 1829- Patrickswell Limerick. (Jeremiah was the oldest of at least 9 children)

I found this info about the surname Moylan on the internet:

"Irish surname search

(O) MOYLAN

This is Ó Maoileáin in Irish, an attenuated form of Ó Maoláin which is well known in Munster as Mullane and Mullins. Moylan belongs to Munster, mainly found today in Co. Cork, from where the most noteworthy people of the name came. Brigadier General Stephen Moylan (1734-1811) was among the first to enlist in the American War of Independence; he was elder brother of Francis Moylan, "loyalist" Catholic Bishop of Cork from 1786 to 1815. Another Francis Moylan (b. 1775) was a life-long friend of the Abbé Edgeworth in France. Seán Moylan (1888-1957) was a prominent member of the Irish independence movement and Minister for Agriculture at the time of his death. Unless the Omothlans, Co. Cork robbers fined in 1295 with Ugans and Osynniis, It is numerous in the Hearth Money Rolls for Co. Tipperary (1666) - rolls for the other Munster counties are not extant. It does not occur in the summary of the census of 1659 unless O'Meolane, of the barony of Islands, Co. Clare, is the same name in a different form."

Perhaps you already have this information?

Sara seems to be a repeated family name through most of the Moylan family I have seen on the internet so I assume there must be a connection.

Bye for now
Jay

Yes, many Moylan families changed the spelling of their names from Moylan to Milan. Two reasons for this. First, of historic significance, the Moylans in New England in the 1700s were faced with being conscriped by the British to fight off the colonists, but the Irish hated the English. So they changed the spelling of their names to disguise their heritage. True? My father swears it.

The second is more simple. The name "Moylan", pronounced with the Irish accent, sounds like "My'lan". And the English clerks wrote what they heard. After all, many of those Irish immigrants couldn't read or write, and so didn't care how the clerks spelled their name as long as they got their land grant.

My Moylan ancestors changed to Milan, then moved from Vermont to Wisconsin, where I was born.

Bill

William A. Brobst, Researcher
Moylan Family History Project
6072 Currituck Road, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949
252-261-3068 Brobst-Hager@embarqmail.com
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=moylan
my grandfather Michael Patrick Carroll's parents were Phillip Carroll and Kate (Katherine) MOYLAN Carroll. I suspect Michael Moylan of being my grandfather's cousin because they were close in age, same Moylan name and both went to stay with the same aunt (listed as their aunt) when they came to the USA. My grandfather was born March 12 of 1880 and Michael Moylan was born in 1876. My grandfather also had a brother named Edward John Carroll born in 1888 in county waterford (I can't read the name of the town very well but it looks like Ringville). My great grandfather Phillip Carroll was a farmer. Edward also stayed with the same aunt when he came over in 1905. My grandfather came in 1902 and his "cousin" Michael came in 1898. Hope this hooks up with something you have as I have not been to do very much on them or the Carrolls. thanks, nancy from south carolina

Jillian, here is some Moylan information I posted earlier. Unfortunately, JPEG files of the relations in Australia listed in the Will of James Moylan no longer appear in the posting on Ancestry referenced below, for some reason I don't know.

(I am posting here part of message in the Genealogy.com Moylan Forum, relating to descendents located in Australia; see http://genforum.genealogy.com/moylan/messages/210.html .)

Margaret Kelly, niece of James and Maragaret Moylan, are reported in James' will as living in Perth, West Australia, in 1903 as is Mary Everett, niece. Also in Australia in 1903 were Michael Moylan, nephew, and James Moylan, nephew, in Bolder City.

Since James was born in 1832, I would guess that these children were born about 1850 - 1870.

Here is a link to the JPEG files (attached at bottom of message) that show nephews and nieces of James Moylan, living in Australia and Ireland in 1903.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.britisles.ireland.gene...

For a great listing of descendents of Patrick Moylan, born 1797, who immigrated to NSW, go to

http://users.tpg.com.au/butlerj/Moylan_01.htm#Patrick%20Moyl...

Any help or connections would be appreciated.

Pat
Hi Daniel. Thanks for the response. Are you William's son? If so, my grandfather and your great grandfather were brothers. I have a lot of information about your Moylan line if you have an interest (back to the late 1700s). What was the maiden name of your Grandmother (Clell's wife)?

Pat

This is as much as I can put together from what you told me; now part of my on-line data base on the Moylans:

Descendants of John Moylan

John Moylan b: Bef. 1829 in Conroy, Co Galway, Ireland d: Aft. 1880 in USA
..	+Catherine Dolan b: Bef. 1829 in Ireland m: Abt. 1849 in Utica, NY d: Aft. 1880 in USA
John Moylan b: Aft. 1849 in Utica, NY
Mary Moylan b: Aft. 1849 in Utica, NY

I don't have any connections I can find with what you have sent me and what I had in the data base prior to today.

But I just collect Moylan data and put into the on-line data base for others to latch onto.

Bill

William A.
Re: Update of Moylan on-line data base

My Moylan data base is focused primarily on my own family lines, back to Martin Moylan b 1806 in Kilkeedy (Tubber), County Clare, Ireland, and his wife Bridget Hogan, b 1810, and who settled first in New England and then Wisconsin. I have added in a lot of related Moylan information as I have come across it, in the thought that someday I might want to dig further into all these Moylans. Considering my age now (78), I just might pass up that part of my genealogy hobby.

I would be willing to add in any other Moylan information people might want to send me; that's easy to do, just sitting here at my computer. Keeps me off the streets and out of the pool halls and bars!!

I've found some other Moylan family info at:
http://www.themoylans.com:83/JMTree.html

Joe Meehan was compiling a master Moylan file, but sadly he died a couple of years ago.

Bill

William A.
Hi,

I had emailed you back in 2000 about my great grandfather John Moylan from Utica NY. In recent searches I did find out that my great great grandparents were John Moylan and Catherine Dolan. I haven't found where in Ireland they're from though! I did find some evidence of the ships they came over on and that they were married about 1849 in Utica NY. I found them on the 1880 Michigan census and found my great great grandmothers maiden name on Mary Moylan's marriage record. I have met a cousin and have been emailing with her about the family and she has some other info for me. I still don't know if my John Moylan is your's but who knows!

Therese Moylan Black
ttbobby_2000@yahoo.com

Their children were: Bernard, 1851,
John 1853, my great grandfather, Frank, 1858, Lille, 1860, Joseph, 1862, Mathias, 1864, William and Kate, 1868, William died 1890, Mary, 1870, married Augustus McLogan, and George 1872 - 1891. They were married in Utica NY. All children were born in New York.
I was told that my great grandfather and grandmother, Kate Lynch were married in Utica NY also. Their children were Lillie, 1874, John 1876/1930, Frank 1878, and Anne 1880. Still looking for records of Anne. John married Catherine Beier on June 27, 1905. Still looking for more information.
I am a descendant of Roger Moylan & his wife Mary Hogan who lived in Ballyanny, Tipperary, Ireland. They had 10 children and the eldest son Michael Moylan married a Mary Montgomery in 1844 in Australia.
Terry, there are a lot of families of Moylans (maybe 30 related ones and more)from around Quin. I know of three specific brothers who went to Australia from the large family of Peter Moylan. I also have a will from 1905 of James Moylan, who was born in the townland of Ballyglass, very near Quin, that lists several of his nieces and nephews in Australia. I have posted the will, and some of the names and locations previously.

Please click on my name and review my previous Moylan postings, and also check out the Moylan database that is the main subject of this thread.

I am working on a project deadline this week and will try to review your information in more detail as soon as I can.

Do you know more specifically where your Patrick Moylan was born -- Townland? Have you checked the townlands around Quin in Griffith's Valuation of 1855 for Moylan lands? Go to the Clare library website if you haven't already.

I will also send your information to my Moylan contacts to see if they have any connections to you.

Regards,

Pat

Margaret, the Moylans whom I have been researching are in Co. Clare, so I can't be of help directly. I did a quick search on Tipperary and found the following resources that could be useful to you:

http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/tipperary/

http://www.pmoylan.org/pages/family/KenMoylan/wwwboard/index...
.

I do know from personal conversation with Oliver Moylan in Ennis, Co. Clare, who is very knowledgeable of his Moylan ancestors, that, at least his branch of Moylans, were driven out of Co. Cork by Cromwell. Oliver's family, and I think mine too, settled around Quin, Co. Clare. Whether your ancestors may have also come from Co. Cork for the same reason back then, I don't know. The Cork Heritage Centre at Mallow has online searches, but their records cover primarily the northern part of Co. Cork, and there are many not included. You can find more links on Co. Cork at
http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/cork/index.html .

We do know of three brothers, James, Tom and John, who went to Australia from the family of Oliver's grandfather, Peter, from the Quin area.

We have five people working on this branch of Moylans from Quin area. Anyone having possible connections to them, please let me know.

Margaret, if you find some links on your ancestors, please do let me know. After all, we all must be related at some point!

Pat

Bill, is this Moylan Family Registry for all Moylans, or limited to your branch? That is, can others who have Moylan information add it to this registry?

Does anyone know of a general registry of all known Moylans? It would be very helpful if we had one consolidated database where all known Moylans could be registered, with contact information for contributors who have more information.

Pat

Re: Stasia Moylan(nee Saunders)

I recently started researching my ancestry and came across your message regarding Stasia Moylan. I'm pretty sure that Stasia is my great grandmother. She was born Anastasia Saunders (born 1884) in Laois, Ireland and came to the US sometime in the early 1900 (still researching). She and her family of 10 resided in Jersey City, NJ. Her husband was Thomas Moylan (not Patrick) but she did have a son Patrick who was born in 1905. This is Thomas Moylan and Anastasia Moylan's offspring:
Patrick born 1905
Robert born 1906
Thomas born 1908
Edward born 1909
Kathleen born 1912
Richard born 1914
Anastasia born 1915 (died at age 12)
Walter born 1917
Joseph born 1919 (died at age 5)
Mary born 1924 (still alive and well. My grandma)

I would love to hear back from you. If I'm understanding your post correctly, it seems you would be my grandmother's uncle.

Please respond if you have a chance.

Staceys88@yahoo.com
