I was playing on the computer this am and I found this article. These people are my great, great grandparents. I am Francis J. Moynihan's daughter Barbara. This is really interesting to see and read. I have often wondered where my roots are located in Ireland. Had I know I would have visited there when I made the trip in 1983. Thank you so much for entering this information. I have forwarded the article to my brother, Francis J. Moynihan II in Jamestown, NY. If you want to contact me I can be reached at galmoy@optonline.net.

Re: Locate family members

Historical Note: Patrick and Hanora Moynihan were married in County Kerry, Ireland in 1840. They left Ireland in 1848 in a sailing vessel, debarking six weeks later in Quebec. They lived in Canada only a few years, they settled first in Buffalo and for a short time in Dunkirk, then returned to Buffalo before finally moving to Jamestown in 1858. In addition to the nine children who attained maturity, there was an infant who did not survive the sea voyage. The death was not disclosed to the ship's officers so that the baby could be buried on land. Interment took place in Canada. A young boy named John suffered a fatal accident and was buried in Buffalo.

Jamestown Evening Journal, Monday, December 3, 1906 (page 5): Patrick Moynihan aged and respected citizen passed away Sunday evening. Mr. Moynihan was in his 99th year and was respected for his upright life, for his honesty and generosity. He is survived by his wife and 90 descendants, including nine children.
At 7:20 o'clock Sunday evening at his home, 711 Lafayette Street, Patrick Moynihan passed away in the 99th year of his life surrounded by his kindred who mourn that a life of such goodness and usefulness should end, but happy that its memory will live not only in the mind of his kindred, but in the entire community, for Patrick Moynihan was respected for his upright life, his honesty, his generosity, and loved for his great Irish heart that beat tenderly for everyone.
On March 14th, nearly 99 years ago, Patrick Moynihan was born in Ireland near the Lakes of Killarney and as St. Patrick's day was celebrated only a few days later, the boy was named Patrick, in the good saint's honor. His life was that of other boys in the island country, hearty and wholesome and as he became a gardner, it was an outdoor life that no doubt situation which allowed him to see the passing of nearly a century of years.
In 1840 he married Miss Nora Cronin, and not many years afterward they decided to try their fortunes in America, the golden land of promise, and with their little family came to Canada. Not long afterward they left Quebec for the States and for a short time resided in Buffalo.
In 1858, nearly 50 years ago, they removed to Jamestown, where they have since lived and where his large family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have surrounded and made happy the closing days of a remarkable life.
The descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Moynihan number 90, and including the numbers of those relatives by marriage there are 114. There are nine children: Cornelius Moynihan of Buffalo, Mrs. William Harrison, Mrs. Thomas Mahoney, Daniel Moynihan, Mrs. James Cotter, Patrick Moynihan Jr., Mrs. W. H. Tyler, Miss Bridget Moynihan and Miss Nora Moynihan, all of this city. Besides the nine children there are 44 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Moynihan, who is 89 years of age, has been ill for about two weeks, is prostrated from the shock of her husband's death and grave doubts as to her recovery are entertained by the family. Mr. Moynihan had been in his usual excellent health until Friday evening, when he complained of nausea. He grew worse but rallied again on Sunday and when death came it was so peaceful and quiet that the prayers he was uttering simply ceased, and the faithful lips were softly silenced. It was difficult for those about the bedside to understand that the life had passed so suddenly and completely.
Mr. Moynihan was a faithful member of S.S. Peter and Paul's Catholic church, taking an active interest in all its branches of work, giving liberally of his means to its needs and his strength to its services. Few men who live to such a venerable age posses at the time of death their faculties in such excellent condition as did Mr. Moynihan. He was as straight and strong as many men of 50, his mind was clear, his memory keen, his eyesight perfect and his hearing only slightly impaired. He enjoyed the affairs of state and city and took an interest in all the events of the day. His love for his large family filled the major portion of his kind heart, but did not exclude his love for the large family of mankind, all of whom he esteemed as friends.
His death is regretted by everyone as it was hoped that he would live to see the century out and his excellent health made that desire seem probable, but suddenly the machinery faltered, the kind heart beat slower, and the spark of life left the venerable body and passed on.
The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from S.S. Peter and Paul's Catholic church and will doubtless be one of the most generally attended services held in years. The remains will be laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.

Jamestown Evening Journal, Thursday, December 6, 1906 (page 11): Worn out body laid to rest. Impressive services held this morning over the remains of venerable Patrick Moynihan.
The funeral of Patrick Moynihan was held this morning from S.S. Peter and Paul's Catholic church at 9 o'clock, Rev. Father Coyle officiating. The church was crowded to its capacity with friends and relatives of the deceased. Rev. Father Coyle delivered an eloquent address in which he paid a high tribute to the dead and told of his excellent character and the good example he had set for the scores of children and grandchildren included in the Moynihan family. He also told of the lovable traits of the man and said that as long as he had known him he never knew of one unkind deed.
The floral tributes to the dead were very beautiful. Thirty-two carriages accompanied the casket to the cemetery. The following members of the family acted as bearers: Dr. John J. Mahoney, John R. Moynihan, Patsy Moynihan Jr., Frank Tyler, P.J. Moynihan and C.M. Harrison.
The following were present from out of the city: Mrs. James R. Moore, Mrs. David A. Seymour, Miss Mary Mooney, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Moynihan Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Moynihan Jr., Miss Nellie Moynihan and Mr. and Mrs. John R. Moynihan, all of Buffalo. Cain O'Connor and William Barrett, two detective sergeants of Buffalo, were also present at the service. The following were present from other places: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moynihan of Corry, Pa; Martin McAllen and wife and Daniel Fitzgerald of Ridgway, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. John Conley and daughter of Salamanca and Mr. and Mrs. James O'Brien of Ashville.

John Moynihan

My great-grandfather John Moynihan came from Glenflesk Co Kerry, in 1848. He married a widow, Susan O'Connor (nee) Stafford at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Tredegar Monmouthshire on the 26th November 1877. He died 27th December 1895. Apart from this information very little is known about him except that he was a well-educated man who worked as a labourer in an ironworks! His father's name was Daniel and he was a farmer. He had at least one sister, Kathleen or Catherine who married well. On his marriage cert. he spelt his name Mynehan but on his death cert. it was spelt Moynihan - his son Daniel was present at his death. Thats all I can say but would be interested in hearing from anyone.
I'm not Mike Powell I'm Eileen Pearce (nee O'Leary)

I was unable to email you directly. Could you tell me what you have on Patrick and Hanora after they came here? What I've been able to find is that Patrick's parents were Patrick Moynihan and Nora Mahoney. Patrick (the son) was christened on March 6, 1808, Roman Catholic, in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland.

Joe, I just came across your posting and thought this is so close I had to write. My ancestors Maurice Moynihan, his brother Jerimiah Moynihan and Jerimiah's wife Katherine Horan Moynihan lived at #6 Hampden St in Holyoke from around 1880 to about 1920. Jerimiah passed away in about 1888 and Maurice and Katherine then moved to High St where Maurice lived until his death in 1933.

They are all buried in the Stickle/Moynihan plot at St Jerome Cemetery.

They had a sister by the name of Anne/Nancy Moynihan Carey who died in 1878 and her children lived with Maurice and Katherine until about 1892 or later.

My Moynihans all came from Kerry in about 1847 and there other family names are Cronin's who also left Kerry and settled in Holyoke.

I have made many many trips to Holyoke researching my family and there is a wealth of information at St Jeromes. If any of this sounds like we could be connected please let me know.
Edward J. Moynihan, son of Daniel J., son of Jeremiah

I'm looking for information on the Moynihan family who settled in the Albany, NY and Glens Falls, NY regions. My great-grandfather was Edward J. Moynihan, (b. 20 Aug 1893) and he had 7 siblings. I have a lot of info on my gr. grandfather but not much on his siblings. Here is the info I have on the siblings at this point:

PARENTS:
Daniel J. Moynihan b.16 Dec 1861-d.23 May 1933
and Mary Singleton b. 17 Oct 1892-d. 1 May 1949

SIBLINGS:
Jeremiah James b. 20 Sep 1891- m. Anna H. Adams
Mary Elizabeth b. 12 Aug 1894- m. George Clayton Wallace
William Francis (Frank)b. 20 Jun 1896- m. Priscilla Mayer
Margaret Moynihan b. 28 Apr 1898- m. Joseph Toomey
Catharine Agnes (((TWIN))) b. 8 Apr 1899 - d 2 Jun 1899
Charles Vincent (((TWIN))) b. 8 Apr 1899 - m. Kathryn Kenyon
Robert Daniel b. ? Jul 1905

If anyone has more information about my great-grandfather's siblings, their offspring, or their ancestors, I would appreciate knowing! I'm fairly new to all of this, and am trying to update records my mother and other family members had. Some of the records haven't been updated in more than 20 years! If you can help me with this, or if you think I might be able to help you, please e-mail me. I don't get on these threads very often, so e-mail would be better.
family-roots@inmykitchen.org
Hello,

My name is Susan Bovair (m. Dean). My mother is Julie Blanchard, her parents were Julius Blanchard and Claire A. Moynihan. Claire was the daughter of Isabel Lansing and Edward Moynihan. Your great-grandfather Hiram would have been my grandmother Claire's uncle.
I have recently taken it upon myself to update our genealogy, and figured I would try the internet, using a free site. I'm so excited to find your message as the first one listed in the Moynihan thread of RootsWeb threads! I would be happy to share with you any info I have that you may be looking for. I'm going to guess that your father was Howard, unless I'm missing information. If you have any info that would help me fill in the gaps, I would really appreciate it! I can be reached at family-roots@inmykitchen.org

Thank you!
Moynihan; Lansing

Hi Tim and others searching Edward Moynihan:

I am currently in process of meeting with members of this family very soon.

Our Edward Moynihan married Isabel Lansing. Isabel was first cousin to my grandfather Howard Ira Lansing.

Isabel had three sibs, Pauline, Basil and Nora Lansing.

Isabel, Edward M.'s wife was born Oct 1895.

Keep in touch with me through my regular email at familytree-writer@juno.com and as I gain more info I will share it with you.

Isabel's father was Eugene Hungerford Lansing brother to my great grandfather Hiram Richard Lansing. They were descended from David Lansing, he was descended from George Lansing and he was desc. from Abraham Gerrit Lansing, former treasurer for state of New York and former Pres. of Western Turnpike (NY) second company, and he was brother to John Lansing Jr. who sat on Cont. Congress and helped see that the Bill of Rights be affixed to the Constitution which he later signed which is little known. Most say he was an antifederalist and didn't sign but he did later but only after states' rights were protected and individual rights.
