Edward was an Angolan from the Congo. Records clearly state his offspring were mullatoes. The name originates from the kingdom of Queen Nzinga and they carried the surname to the Virginia colonies. There are several websites that provide document and support theory.

http://www.dnacommunities.com/cgi-bin/forums/gforum.cgi?post...

http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/genealogy/

Also direct paternal ancestors of Edward Mozingo claim the DNA test reveal african ancestry.

Cristie

C. Maure is absolutely correct in a big way.

While my research into the Mozingos isn't as comprehensive as some, it is very apparent that the Mozingos and all of their variations share a common ancestor. This is looks to be a Edward Mozingo who is attributed with having a dark complextion.

The Mozingo family in America appears to have started in Virginia then split with part moving down through the Carolinas and part moving through Ohio, Kentucky and eventually into Indiana. The southern Mozingos seem to be the ones who started the myth that the family came from the south of France.

Most likely Edward was probably a portugeuse sailor who ended up in America and that is where the name comes from.

There is not any other record of Mozingo or any of it's other versions coming to the US.

I'm really sorry if this shatters anyones beliefs of their heritage.

who had spell checkers way back when? I can assume that wine and beer was safer to drink than polluted water. we know what happens with alcohol and fine motor skills. Before the 1620s, Europe was a mess with power control. Thank goodness for the North American continent. Europeans got out of there, no matter what.

It is well established that most anyone with the name Mozingo/Monzingo/Montzingo in America can be traced back to Edward Mozingo, Angolan/black servant belonging to John Walker - his english/white father in law bought his freedom with 2000 pounds of tobacco. Edward had a grandson name Charles Mozingo listed as a Mullatto in court records that served in the revolutionary war. His daughter Catherine is my fifth great grandmother.

Edward or possibly his father was probably christened as "Duarte Mozingo" in his native Angola land. It is *speculated* that during the Portuguese Congo Wars our Duarte Mozingo was captured and sold into slavery to a Portuguese trader and headed for Mexico. The English captured the slave ship and "liberated" the Angolans bringing them to Colonial Virginia in the early 1600's. These native Angolans were put into indentured servitude with the english settlers and many of them eventually earned thier freedom. Some took english wives and had families of thier own, eventually moving to the foothills of Tennesse or other remote areas having been run out of the increasingly racist and white society.

Over time and succesive generations this african heritage had been hidden and forgotten by the descendants who by all appearances were white.

In the begining of this research into family tree i was also skeptical and doubtfull of my own heritage being anything but European in origin. Because thats what I'd been fed by my parents, and grandparents etc... But there are the documents proving otherwise and some have even the DNA tests to prove it.

Please see:

Mozingo! yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MOZINGO/?yguid=113450623

Mozingo/Monzingo family tree
http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/genealogy/

Susan Mozingo Ward
http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/19th_3.htm

and the best of all:
Queen Nzingha
http://www.knowyourblackhistory.com/queen-nzingha.html

C.
I think too many people are unwilling to accept that thier roots are African. Mozingo is also from the older Native Angola name Massinga which comes from Nzinga as in Queen Nzinga. From the Congo. It's a royal bloodline from that culture.

Saying that Mozingo is french or italian is realllly stretching it I think. Lots of names are similar sounding but it doesnt mean they have the same origin or even nationality.

Maure is a french surname. Mauer is a German surname the two are completely unrelated. Traylor is an anglicized name of the french "Trailleur" (Traveller)while "Taylor" is a common english name. The two surnames again are completely unrelated.

C. Maure

Cristie:
Spellings of Mozingo, Monzingo, can change. Turbulent religious wars can trigger alias name changes, too. Massicots could be a back track to the name change, too.

Ing could be for England or Ingland.

What do you think?

Anna

Have you ever asked the library to get you the census files on micro fitch from Utah for the different years when you think they were in Mississippi? You can view the film on the viewer, which the library has, they can show you how to use it. I found Mozingo in the 1850, 1860 on up till 1900. The census records show where they are located and who their neighbors are and their ages and where they were from. Names of children and wife are all included. If I were you I would check Wayne County first and then Jones County. I do believe you can get up to 4 films at a time and there is no charge. The films must be viewed at the library and may not be taken home. I hope this helps. Cecile D. Hebert

I am trying to track down a George Mozingo who was suppose to be a confederate from the Virigina area. I have heard that he is my great great Grandfather and was a decorated lieut. In the Years around 1860! My grandfather was Calvin edward mozingo and the George and Edward are common names in my Family tree. I have not yet got any pics of George but was told he wrote a white horse and had a long greyish black beard. From what i understand the Mozingo's came over and landed in the Virginia beach area and then spread further out. Would love to share information and if any of this sounds familiar maybe we are tied to the same bloodline!!
sincerely,

Just a short message for now. Charles and Eva were siblings, so we are cousins of some sort. You are only one of two relatively distant living relatives that I know about.

I didn't grow up in Stoke's Bridge, but my Grandfather, Benjamin Tillman Woodham, did. I have been to the Bishopville area a couple of times, and along the way have discovered that I am related to all those families you mentioned.

I we can get in touch to talk more.

I read your letter to the Record and wanted to see if I could help you find some answers. There are a couple of Jerusalem Baptist Churches in the Warsaw area, so after rereading your letter I came to the conclusion that the cemetery most likely to hold the key to your family would be the one located on Rt. 3 east in Emmerton which is east from Warsaw heading toward Kilmarnock. The church and cemetery are located on Rt. 3. I walked the cemetery this morning and found the graves of Lillie A 1865 - 1944 & Charles B. Mozingo 1860 - 1931, next to their tombstone is a stone that could quite possibly that of Blanche Clara (Mozingo) Brown. I cannot decipher anything on the stone, but there were faded artificial flowers in front of both stones that looked to be the same. Also at the outer perimeter(corners) of these two stones are four small concrete markers. I took photographs and they can be seen in a couple of them.

Have you ever obtained a death certificate for Blanche Clara Brown? It is customary for the funeral director to write the place of burial on the lower right hand side of the certificate. My husband's great grandfather died in Baltimore in 1906 and the cemetery in which he was buried was written on the certificate. It would be worth looking into.

Did you ever find when and where John Henry Brown and Blanche were married? I would suspect it would be either Richmond, Northumberland or Lancaster Counties. The Mary Ball Museum/Library probably has this information and I will see what I can find for you. Please let me know if you already have this info and if you would like me to check it out.

I made copies of the cemetery pictures, ran out of glossy paper but they look good on copy paper, thought you could compare the tombstone picture that you said someone sent to you...if they are alike, then I'm betting that is where Blanches is buried, right next to her parents! Let me know if you want the copies of the pictures.

The Record has you address as 4227 Soth Avenue, is it Soth or South??

Regards,
Mary Ann

Re: All Mozingos

My madian name is Mozingo. My family is from Waynesboro, Miss.. My grandfather was Harvey Mozingo and grandmother was Ruby Lee (Diamon,Graham) Mozingo. Her madian name was Moody I believe. She married Jim Diamon,I think that I am spelling that right, and then married Jim Graham after first husbands death. After second husbands death she married Harvey. They had five sons togeather to go with the three daughters and one son that she had by the first two marriages. I had been reading about all of the Mozingo's from West Virgina and had no idea that there was so much history on the family over on the east coast. I wonder if the same ones came over to Miss. and started up there. My neice and nephew went to the library and looked up the name and they said that they found proof that the name came from Italy. Now I hear that it could have come from France. My daddy and four of his brothers and his father were very dark complected and dark black hair. Very little facial or body hair and very indian like in a tall stature. I also found out that there was a dispute between two clans long ago and part of the clan broke off and went north and started to spell their name Mazingo. My grandfather Harvey had a brother Sam Mozingo that could pass for a twin brother but when I met him at my fathers funerial he swore that they were not twins.

Does any of this info. ring a bell to you? Has anyone ever said anything to you about the family being from Mississippi? If you are still out there, as I noticed the 1999 dates on last entries, let me know what you got on the subject. I has always been a secret search of mine that interest me greatly. Thanks, just the chance to do this has been very exciting!! Sincerly Teressia (Mozingo) Meredith from Bainbridge, Ga.
Her mother was a Bruce and and her father was Charles Bruce. Are you from SC? I'm originally from Bishopville, SC and related to most all of the Woodhams, Smiths, Skinners, Bruces and Mozingo's from out in the Stokes Bridge/Ashland area.

Let me know!
You can contact me at b.fraser49@yahoo.com if you'd like. I have a good bit of information on the Woodhams. I'm descended from Asa Woodham and his wife, Laney Dubose Woodham, with two of my lines. Both Henry Eva and Mid Skinner's lines went back to Asa. So, they were cousins and probably didn't realize it. By the way, Laney's father was Captain Peter Dubose who served in the Revolution with Francis "the Swampfox" Marion. If you go back to Bishopville in the future, you can find a historical marker about his next to the Lynches River Bridge on Highway 15. His grave is about 50 yards from the marker.

Re: Mozingo in Mississippi

To Mr. Burnham:
I have researched the Mozingo name years ago. The Mozingo name appears with the American colonies, therefore they originate in Northern Europe, possibly France. Since the American colonies begin in the 1600s, then in Europe they may have experience the Protestant Movement in France. Kings taking land away from landowners in the name of the Church which gives rise to protesters like John Calvin and Martin Luther. Look it up; The 1400s and 1500s are filled with Christian changes. By 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, the violence of the Protestant Movement caused a flood of people to get new land in a New World. The Mozingos may have been part of the Hugenots within the Protestant Movement. If you know the French language, then you know that the t is silent, so you cut it off. If you are a violent protester, then you could seek shelter and voyage in England. If your land was taken by the King for the church, then possibly you couldn't spell. The z sounds like an s. Perhaps considerable time is spent in an English pub, so you drink. The English don't like the French at all. So, being drunk you begin to write Massicot like M o z i ng o. That's it! Bon! Mozingo!

I found the Massicot line which is French in origin. The Mozingo name appears within the American colonies about 1690s. The Mozingos were Patriots for the American Revolutionary War. They would have been 100% behind George Washington to complete and win the war.

I think there was plenty of room for Mozingos to settle within the wilderness with the Native American tribes as well as African Americans. I have noticed mulatto Mozingos, too.

When I first heard the name in 1975, I thought it was Italian. The Mozingo I know has a violent temper, so did his father. I have an interesting theory, but people in the 1400s,1500, and 1600s were talkers for the most part. And if you are running from the executioners for uprooting the peaceful control of the Church's people, then a name change and a new place to settle in peace would be a good solution.

I hope this helps your quest.

Sincerely,
Anna Ballard
I would say that 99.999% of all Mozingos in NC, VA, SC, and up and down the Eastern Seaboard descend from Edward Mozingo. Considering the date and location of your ancestor, I am basically positive that he is descended from Edward Mozingo who was born before 1644 in old Rappahannock County, VA. If you want to give me the information that you have, I can trace all the history that I have on the family to make your link. I most likely have it. I have more on this family than any of the genealogy websites. I have all the historical documentations to support my claims. Best of all, I do this free for my family. In this case, you would have to be a cousin.

Chip Fraser
Greensboro, NC
(336) 286-7661

Hi Johnny,
I believe John and Esther would have been my grandparents, parents. I'm not too familiar with the family tree as there are just too many Mozingo's to remember it all. I have about 11 Aunts and Uncles on my fathers side and just remembering all their names is hard for me. I did not grow up with the Mozingo family as my father passed away before I was born.

I am trying to find the link to the Mozingo family web site that allows you to type any name from the Mozingo family and it will tell give you the family tree information. One of the Mozingo's contacted me and worked really hard to put the web site together. You can even add your own information. I just emailed her to get it... I will post it once I have received it from her.
