Obit: Margaretta Muff of NE>IA (1911-2008)

Margaretta Helen Muff was born August 7, 1911, the daughter of Joseph L. and Freda Coffey Muff. She died at the Denison Care Center Monday, December 8, 2008, at the age of ninety-seven.

Margaretta was born in Crete, Nebraska, and received her first two years of education in a rural school near her home and then transferred to St. James School in Crete. In 1927, at the age of sixteen, she entered the Convent of the Precious Blood in O'Fallon, Missouri, where she had three years of Novitiate. While there, she spent several years in the sewing room. She then transferred to St. Elizabeth Academy where her duties included: door keeper, answering the phone and waiting on guests. Margaretta taught school at St. John's School, St. James School in Crete, Nebraska, and St. Richard's School in Omaha, Nebraska. During the summer months she spent her time doing college work. For her last teaching job she returned to St. John's and, when she arrived, she found the Sisters were no longer wearing veils and habits. She felt heartsick and in 1970 decided to return home to Omaha, where she cared for Mrs. Micek and Mrs. Stella. She also worked for the Willsie Cap and Gown Company for ten years. In 1998, Margaretta moved back to Dow City to be near her family.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City. Margaretta never went anywhere without her rosary. She always prayed for her family; and was always ready to go in a minute. She loved parties and spending the holidays with family. She also enjoyed country videos, Bingo and trips to the casino.

Margaretta was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Elmer, Richard and Joseph Muff; four sisters: Marie Murphy, Betty Muff, Ruby Muff and Pearl Putman. Survivors include one brother, Carl J. Muff and his wife, Mary Lou; one sister, Virginia Sudrla; one sister-in-law, Rosemary Muff; many nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2 P.M., Thursday, December 11, 2008, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City, Iowa. Fr. Donald Slaven served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at the Dow City Cemetery. Organist EveVonne Muff provided accompaniment for vocalist Amanda Sandvold. Eucharistic ministers were Janet and Joel Kluver. Thomas Kloser served as lector. Gift bearers were the Kloser family. Servers were Nicholas Putman and Mitchell Putman. Serving as pallbearers were Buzz Putman, Gene Harre, Jim Muff, Joseph Muff, Jack Sudrla and Larry Muff. Wednesday Prayer Services at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 7 P.M. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:30 P.M. The family invited everyone to return to Brasel Hall for fellowship and lunch served by the Altar Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Hi Patricia, I saw your Great-grandparents and grandmother on the 1901 census. Do you have any information on Harry's parents? I see that there is an Eliza Greenwood living with them. Was Mary's maiden name Greenwood? Harry would have been born about 1869, do you know where? How much genealogy research have you done so far on your family? Are you in touch with any of the other Muff families in Bradford? Nancy

The likely parents, according to the census returns, are James bn 1806 & Martha bn about 1813

1851 HO107. Piece 2305, Folio 350, page 10.

1861 RG9/3315, Folio 53, page 8.

1871 RG10/4448, Folio 34, page 30.

All addresses in Rooley Lane, Bowling, Bradford.

George Muff - coal miner born 1841 died 11 Feb 1877 married Sarah j Hodgeson in 1875. Sarah born 1846 died 1913.

Do you know who was Georges father do you have their marriage certificate

George Muff 1st Lord Calverley. His parents were George Muff, a coal miner and Sarah J Muff a weaver.

In 1881 census RG11/4459, folio 47, page 9. Sarah J, a widow, and family, can be found at 62 Jacob Street, Horton, Bradford, Yorkshire.

Lord Calverley's mother in law, Mary was my grandfather's Sister

Hi, I have lots of Muff family members in the Bradford area, and have two Muff gentlemen married to Firths. Archimedes Muff married Martha Firth (1848), and Joseph Muff married Mary Firth (1823). I also have a Faith Firth who married Thomas Ingham (1820), if that sounds familiar. Please let me know if you are interested in exchanging information.

Do you know where in England your Johh Muff came from? Muff is a very old family name from the Bradford, Yorkshire area, and most English Muff families come from around that part of the country. Do you know when John immigrated, or can you send me more information on John? I have LOTS of information on the English Muff family, since my grandfather was a Muff, and with the help of other Muff relatives I have found in England, we have been able to trace the family back to the late 1700s.

Mittelstadt (today part of Reutlingen) belongs to Wuerttemberg, Germany.
The entry means Dorothea was not married when departing and she had 3 children with Heinrich (Henry) Lonsinger. Do you know if she was catholic or protestant? The priest of Mittelstadt should have a register of all families beginning around the year 1800. They often made marginal remarks like "gone to America" or "killed at war".

My grandfather was Casper "Cap" Schueth, the brother of Christine Schueth Muff. I would like to hear from you. I have many photographs that I can identify and some that I would like to show to you to see if you can id them. Also have extensive Schueth data. I would like some more information about the Muffs for my family history. Leonard Muff, my mother's cousin usually had Sunday dinner with us when I was growing up, however, at that time I had no interest in family history. - Colleen

There is also a Muff family in Nebraska. Frank Muff married Mary Sehi in Lancaster Co., NE, on 12/26/1870. They lived in Humphrey, NE, and had 8 children.

Seeking information on the Muff family, which immigrated from Thuringia (Germany) in the 1840s.

Johann Heinrich Muff - b.27 Jun 1829 Meiningen-Hildburghausen, Thuringien (Saxony). Parent: Peter & ??
wife: Caroline Schmidt/Deiner/Diener - b. 11 Sep 1833 Weimar-Saxony.
They were married in the U.S. (probably Wisconsin). Caroline may have been married previously (before 1855)
