I was wondering if anyone knew of a Loretta Muir, if she is related to John Muir family. I worked for a moving company for over 30 years and her things were in storage. She was very ecentric and hidden and did not want anyone to know where she lived. Her things were finally auctioned after many years and I have a few, from all over the world. I did not know about John Muir history at that time. The things were from all over the world.

I am researching James W. Muir. Born abt. 1851 in Arkansas. His Father & Mother were born in Tennessee according to census information. He was living in Searcy Co.,Bear Creek Township in 1880, age 29 yrs. Occupation:Lawyer. He was a boarder in household of Mary Norman a widow woman. James W. Muir served Civil War on Confederate side. He served from Missouri and Arkansas. He married Mary Ellen Hand in abt. 1884 to 1886 in Ark. They had one son, James Clyde Muir, born Oct.5,1888 in Ark., died May 5, 1905 in Webb City,Jasper Co., Missouri. Mary Ellen Hand Muir had remarried to Wm. Michael Wright at the time James Clyde Muir died. Is there anyone researching the Muir family in Tennessee and Arkansas? I am trying to determine James W. Muir's death date and place of death. Mary Ellen Hand Muir Wright received a pension for her minor son James Clyde Muir.

All replies appreciated.

Taunji

Have you had a look at the Scotland's People website?

It is the portal to all of the official Scottish BMD records and a lot more besides. It does require a payment but that gets you credits that you can use over a longish period. It will also give you the images of the original documents where they exist.

it can be reached at:
http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/

There is a picture of a round room on the main page - that is a fantastic place to be. All of the bookshelves on the upper level contain the original records from all of Scotland spanning hundreds of years and they go back a couple of tiers too.

Anyway - I digress - I hope you manage to find what you need. My Muirs are from a bit further south than renfrewshire but there may still be a link.

Good hunting.

Jim T

jane (Leggat) Muir

According to the early Canadian census files, my ancestors, Jane (Leggat) and John Muir were born in Renfrewshire Scotland in the early 1800s. They must have married there,as two children were born before leaving for America. They arrived in Canada in 1842 from the USA, settling in what is now southern Ontario.
Surely someone is able to connect the dots and find John or Jane's birth/marriage records? I would love to know who their families were in Scotland, and am eager to share my Muir research.
Thanks in advance, C

Muir of Michigan/Wisconsin cir 1813-1870

My paternal gggg-grandfather is William ? Muir. He was born in Scotland cir. 1813. I have no information on his emigration to North American. Members of the family say he came in from Canada. I have found a possible match for him in 1860 census of MI, living in the American Hotel, Mt Clemens, MI. This gentleman appears as William C. Muir, age 47, an agent for the G.B.R.R., which I assume to be the Green Bay Railroad. Again, family has talked of one of my grandfather’s ancestry working for the railroad. I haven’t had any more luck searching Michigan or Wisconsin for him.

William the elder’s son was born in Tecumseh, MI in April 1838. Wm. R. Muir served in the Civil War, enlisting July 22, 1861 @ 24 yrs, resigning Jan. 1863. He married Phebe A. Hamblin 1863 in Appleton, WI. They had two sons, Charles H. 1868 and George B. 1869, in Lake City, MN. Charles H. Muir is my g-grandfather. My grandfather is Walter Charles 1894, was born in Clinton, MI, served in WWI at Fort Knox, KY and Panama Canal. He met my grandmother Bertha A. Hildreth in Louisville, KY where he died in 1960.

I realize this is a brief profile of their lives but what I’m looking for is anyone with information that can help me with emigration from Canada to WI or MI. cir. 1820 to 1835 for Wm. ? Muir. Some history on the G.B.R.R. during the 1860’s and what would have prompted migration to Minnesota for a short period of time for Wm. R. after his marriage, because they did return to the Clinton, MI area where they lived out their lives. I have a photo of the elder Wm. taken at the Fadner Studio, 26 Kansas St. Southside in Oshkosh, WI. I’m sure this picture could tell me quite a bit if I only knew something about styles and fashion of the 1800’s. I have attached a copy of the elder Muir (center)for anyone that could tell me about the photo.
Thomas Muir son of James Muir and Annie Cumming - Inverness

I am trying to find the death of my 2 x great grandfather Thomas born in Urghart and Glenmoriston Inverness in 1806. He married Catherine Fraser around in 1829 and had 3 sons, Alexander, James and Simon. He then married Christina Grant in Urquhart in 1832 and had children (Catherine, Anne, Archibald, Elizabeth,Angus, Thomas, Flora).

Thomas and Christina and all Thomas' children excluding Alexander and Catherine migrated to Moreton Bay (Brisbane, Australia). Christina died in 1859 and Thomas married Johanna Donovan in Toowoomba in 1866. They had three children (Christiana, Jane and Archibald).

After 1871 Thomas, Johanna, Jane and Christiana all disappear along with Thomas and Christina's son Thomas and their daughter Annie Behan and her husband William.

I thought they might have moved to another Australian State, New Zealand, North America or back to Scotland but I can't find any of them. Can anyone help?

Hi,
James H. Muir was my paternal grandfather. I can't tell you much, but I can tell you that Lydia Muir (nee Cox) was not his widow. I believe that she was his first wife. Among others after Lydia, he married my grandmother, Cora Lindsay Clark, and a woman named Lorna. I don't know if there were any other wives or not. Lorna contacted my grandfather when James died and asked for help with funeral expenses. My grandmother, who called James a "womanizer", not so politely declined! I have some pictures that shavel4u sent me of Robert and of James. I believe she has contacted you, but if you want any pictures I have, let me know.
