Just wanted to let you know that I just received an e-mail from the Newberry County Clerk of Court. She said that they DO house those early deeds in the courthouse.

I need to go there anyway to look up some Risinger stuff, but I won't be able to do that until after the first of the year. I will certainly see what I can find for you when I go.

-Dana

Hi Susan!

I don't have a copy of the original handwritten document that's located in Box 7, Page 12. What I have is a copy from a book entitled "Newberry Co., SC Equity Records, 1818-1844" by Brent Holcomb. I have met Mr. Holcomb and he has transcribed literally THOUSANDS of SC Archive records and has written well over 100 books. Local genealogy societies are still purchasing his books for their collections. So, if he transcribed it, then that's exactly what the original states. It would be a lot easier if I could just e-mail you the copy of the pages from his book if you'd like to receive it that way. E-Mail me directly at trisinger@sc.rr.com.

I looked up John Goree on the SC Archives website and actually found a transcribed copy of his will, which is available for viewing online. His wife's (Martha) will is also listed and is available to view online. Here's their search page: http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/ Type in GOREE in the name box. Another box will pop up and you can choose John Goree. You will get 4 entries, 2 of those being the wills. Click on the box to the right by each entry that states it's available online to view.

I'm going to now attempt to pick this thing apart and locate the deeds mentioned in my original post and transcribe them here, or at least provide some info as to the actual chain of events mentioned:

According to Frederick Ringer's testimony, James Liles originally owned the land in question in 1795 and kept it until 1809 when the sheriff sold it to Capt. John Henderson who sold it to John Goree in 1814. Frederick Henry stated that Godf__ (which I believe to be Godfrey) originally owned it and sold it to George Dawkins and W. Mulberry who were partners. So, there's the dispute as to who owned the land in the first place.

I found the deed below that references the 38 acres that was granted to John Hogg on Broad River. Frederick Ringer's testimony states that this land was bounded by land of Thomas H. Dawkins and John Goree. However, the reference cited below does not mention John Goree as one of the adjacent land owners.

Date: 8/21/1809
Description: HOGG, JOHN, PLAT FOR 38 ACRES ON BROAD RIVER, NEWBERRY DISTRICT, SURVEYED BY STEPHEN HOGG.
Names indexed: DAWKINS, THOMAS H.; HENDERSON, JOHN; HOGG, JOHN; HOGG, STEPHEN; HOGG, ZACHARIAH
Locations: BROAD RIVER; NEWBERRY DISTRICT

Supposedly, Stephen Hogg conveyed this 38 acres to John Durrett on 4-7-1810. I can find no record of that transaction on the SC Archives website. Supposedly, when young John Durrett died, he willed the 38 acres to his father and siblings. I can find no record of Benjamin Durrett obtaining this property, nor a will for John Durrett. Frederick Ringer then states that he and his wife (Elizabeth Durrett Ringer) sold the land in 1818 to Thomas H. Dawkins. I can find no record of Elizabeth Durrett Ringer, nor Frederick Ringer, obtaining this property, much less selling it to Thomas H. Dawkins.

Just because the SC Archives doesn't have these documents, does not mean that they don't exist. The Newberry County Courthouse may have these deeds. I just sent an e-mail to the Newberry County Clerk of Court and asked where the early 1800's deeds are housed, other than the SC Archives and the Newberry County Library. I did an online search on the Newberry County Library site and apparently they do not have deed records from 1800 to 1815.

And that's all for now. If you have any questions, or want to know anything in particular other than the above, please let me know and I'll certainly try and help you.

-Dana

Dana, I am responding to your post dated 2/22/06. I don't have any information on the Mulberry family, but I am interested in your reference to "John Goree" and the land dispute. Could you tell me if you have a copy of this land dispute from the SC Archives? I am interesting in obtaining a copy and wonder if you could help me. You reference it as Box 7, Page 12. I would gladly pay for postage, copies, etc. Sincerely, Susan Lasserre, Mississippi
Just discovered this old posting. I'm researching my wifes grand mother Matilda Mulberry. I have found that she was the daughter of James Mulberry and Terrissa Duke. They were married in Collin Co., TX in 1855. I can't find James in any census but everywhere Matilda is listed it lists her father origin as Ireland. He was evidently born around 1830 and probably immigrated from Ireland. Matilda's husband was Charles (NMI or name) Moore from Belfast, Ireland. We absolutely cannot find when or where he came into the U.S. I would like very much to find more on the Mulberry's and the Moore's from Ireland. There are so many Charles Moore immigrants from Ireland it seems an impossibility to track him.

Many thanks -- this is the first nibble I have had on the Mulberry line. I have only an tiny bit of information about Mary ann Day. My borther-in-law thought she was born in the 1850s ,but I found a census which suggested she was born in 1847. Her marriage to Samuel Storey Mulberry was January 21, 1869, and my borther-in-law thinks she died about 1940. I have several children listed, my husband's grandmother one of them: Alice Eliza Mulberry who married Fredrick Whitby. I am workijng from Canada, so it has been a matter of consulting L.D.S. microfilms, since there is not much family left that I know of. I would love to learn what you have, and if you want, I can try and construct a GEDCOM, although what I have is pretty tentative.
I appreciate your reply.

I've noted the various messages relating to the Mulberrys from Ireland who went to Canada during the 1800s. If anyone is interested, I have the Mulberry family records back to the 1600s in the Londonderry area of Ireland, and up to the present-day. I am an Englishman based in London, England, and have carried out genealogical research on this family for many years. I would love to know more about David Mulberry of 1882 and his family(parents, children etc.), as I probably have something on their immediate ancestry that would be of use to someone !

The Mulberry reunion is going to be on Sunday, the 5th of August, at the American Legion Post in Georgetown Kentucky. I have a great deal of information on our ancestors. Would love to talk to you.
Dave

My father is Donald Ray Mulberry. His mother's name was Nart Garden. The last time I saw him was 21 years ago. He was living in Lexington, Kentucky at the time. I am pretty sure that he had a son and a daughter from another marriage. I lost contact with him after I joined the Navy. I have been enlisted for 15 years. My mother is Juanita Brookshire. I am divorced and I have 2 wonderful children. Joshua-13 and Michael-9. I would love to see my father again and heal old wounds. I would also like to get to know my brother and sister and any other family members. I live in Virginia now. I guess that is about it. Thanks for taking time to read this message.

Looking for family Johnston that settled here from Ireland they moved to Manitoba and began farming, grandparents were farming they had children maybe 3-4, one daughter was dating a professional hockey player in the 1960's, had one son by him around 1964 and she still lived with her parents, the grandparents helped raise the boy, then she became pregnant again and birthfather would not get involved this time so mother went to Calgary, AB to give baby girl up for adoption. Baby girl was named DAWN MARIE JOHNSTON she was born at Grace Hospital on June 16, 1968. If anyone has info about this family from Manitoba originally pls contact me. The birth father had strawberry blonde hair - his last name is unknown, but the birth mothers last name was Johnston and her son (who would be around 34 now) might have Johnston as his last name too. They also might reside in Alberta as she gave birth to her daughter in Calgary at Grace Womens Hospital which is where you went for unwed mothers. Pls contact me at jamesmi@cadvision.com if anything sounds familiar. Looking for birthbrother and hopefully birth grandparents, parents].Thanks everyone for reading this
