My name is Michael Andrews from Chicago (Joan Shedor is my aunt). My great grandfather, Patrick McCarthy of Milford, Cork came to the U.S. in 1903. He returned in 1906 with his cousin, James Mulcahey (b. abt 1874) of Tournafulla. Two of Patrick's siblings, James and Nora, arrived in 1912 and listed Michael Mulcahy of Knocknadiha, Tournafulla, their cousin, as their contact in Ireland. Patrick McCarthy's mother was Nora Burke (Bourke) of Templeglantine. Let me know if you think there is a connection. You can email me directly at michaeltdrews@hotmail.com.

Hi, Just noticed your post and was particularly interested in the name Matthew Mulcahy. My Mulcahy ancestors have Matthew running through them, come from Co Cork and from my research they are fairly rare. (The Matthews that is).

My branch come from an area just south of Mallow to just North of Cork City and finally into the the City. They were farm labourers following the work and gradually being drawn off the land into the Railway and factories at Blackpool on the outskirts of NE Cork City in the 1890's.

My first confirmed ancestor is Mathew Mulcahy born 4 Jun 1840 in Mourneabbey Co Cork. His parents were Jerry (Jeremiah) and Cath Cussin.

His children were Jeremiah, Thomas, Denis, John, Catherine and Maybe a Michael.

Do you have any of your research in Ireland that matches?

Matthew Falvey
Perth WA

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have since discovered that my Eliza Mulcahy's parents were James Mulcahy and Eliza Ryan. She came to Australia with her Uncle and Aunty, John and Catherine Stewart on the "William Metcalf" in 1844. So I'm not sure if there is a connection with our families? Could possibly still be a distant one I guess but maybe not directly??????

cheers
Kellie
I'm sure we have a connection here somewhere I'm just trying to work it out. I'm researching my husband's family and they were from the Cootamundra/Yass/Goulburn area. We have a lot of christian names in common eg Eliza, Daniel, Matthew, Michael and Ellen. I'm wondering if you have a birth date/year for James Mulcahy as I'm thinking he might be a brother of my John Mulcahy who was born 1819 in County Cork. Parents were John & Ellen. Ring any bells?

Hi,
I'm also researching Mulcahys (my husband's family) and they seem to have a connection with Yass/Goulburn/Cootamundra - gotta be a connection here somewhere! We've traced back to John & Ellen Mulcahy who arrived in Australia on the Lady McNaughton in 1837. On board the ship was their 10 children which included an
Eliza who was 20 at the time. This Eliza could be your Eliza's mother maybe?? Please get in touch and we'll compare notes!

Timothy Mulcahy is listed as the father of William Mulcahy who married in Montreal Feb 3 1862. Listed also on the marraige registry for William is his Mother, though hard to read it may say Mary Moore. On a census from Montreal it indicates that William immigrated to Canada in 1860. On William's headstone in Montreal it states he was from County Clare. If anyone has information on this family it would be greatly appreciated. William est. birth date is 1827

I don't know whether this is at all relevant to your search, but there are a Thomas and Mary E Trithy (I believe, difficult handwriting) living at 85 Luqueer St. in 1900. You can find this by looking at the 1900 census>NY>KINGS>Brooklyn Ward 12>District 172>Image 50.

The reason I think that this could possibly be significant to your search is that my family, Mulcahys, lived in and owned 85 Luqueer St. for years. I know they were living there in 1897, and I know they were living there in 1905, and I'm not sure where they were, or why they don't show up on the census there in 1900. When I read your post though, the similarities of the Trihy name you were looking for, connected to a Mulcahy, and the Trithy name that I came across, in the Mulcahys' house, struck me.

It could be a coincidence, or it could be a real connection. If you do think there's a possibility that this is the family you're looking for, or related to them, you might try searching St. Mary Star of the Sea's Church records - that's where my Mary Ann and Michael Mulcahy were married, in that neighborhood, in the 1880s.

Let me know if you find any of this helpful or want any other information.

My husband's Gr. Gr. Grandmother is a Kate/Catherine Mulcahy. We have a passport document of hers from 1920 where her place and date of birth is listed as: Cashel, Tipperary, 25 March 1856.

I have no birth or death cert. for her but have her marriage cert. to David Byrne. She is listed as living in Moor Lane, Cashel and seems to have continued doing so after her marriage as their son (also David) is listed as being born there. Her father's name is John Mulcahy, Labourer.I think he possibly lived in Cashel for some time as he was an informant on her husband's death cert.

I have a feeling that one of her children/siblings? may have emigrated to the USA and that is why she was travelling there at age 64. (her husband was dead by then) She travelled on the White Star Line to New York. I am not sure if she stayed there or died there.

Anyone who can shed some light on any of this info, please let me know

I believe Denis' first wife was Julia Connors.

Denis Mulcahy & Kate McCarthy are listed in the 1901 census. Denis is listed as a Publican and 75 years old (and born in County Limerick). Kate is listed as 52 years old and born in County Cork. Their children are Patrick & Isabella - both 21 years old (they were twins); Kate - 18 years old; Robert - 17 years old; and Maggie - 16 years old. All the children were born in Limerick County.

I have reviewed most of the birth records for the Newcastle Registration District that cover 1864-1880 at the Family History Center. I reviewed the following birth records for the children of Denis & Kate:

James Mulcahy born on March 15, 1879 (Denis' occupation is listed as shopkeeper).

Patrick & Isabella born as twins on April 20, 1880 (Denis' occupation is listed as shopkeeper).

In the 1860s and 1870s I found the following children born to Denis Mulcahy and Julia Connors of Tournafulla:

Cornelius Mulcahy born on February 26, 1866 (Denis' occupation is listed as farmer).

Jeremiah Mulcahy born on October 23, 1867 (Denis' occupation is listed as shopkeeper).

Sarah Mulcahy born on September 10, 1869 (Denis' occupation is listed as Publican).

Mary Mulcahy born on October 14, 1871 (Denis' occupation is listed as Publican).

I have also been recording all the Mulcahy listings in the birth, marriage and death registers from 1864-1958 for the Newcastle, Tralee and Kanturk Registration District after looking at them on microfilm at a local Family History Center.

I found a death listing for a Julia Mulcahy at the age of 42 in the first quarter of 1874 in the Newcastle Registration District (which includes Tournafulla). I suspect this is the death record for Denis' first wife.

I found two marriage records for a Denis Mulcahy after 1874 and before March 1879 (when Denis and Kate's first child was born). The first listing is for the third quarter of 1876 with the marriage occurring in the Newcastle Registration District. The second listing is for the first quarter of 1878 in the Kanturk Registration District (which is in Cork County at the border of Limerick County and covers Rockchapel and Milleen areas). Since the 1901 census indicates Kate MCCarthy was born in Cork County I suspect the second listing reflect your great-grandparents marriage.

Unfortunately the Family History Center only has microfilm copies of death and marriage records from 1864 to 1870 so I haven't reviewed the actual records.

I hope the above helps you get through the brick wall. If you would like to discuss this further, then send me a private message.

I have recently been in touch with a distant cousin. I believe that Philip may be a nephew of David Mulcahy who was born around 1780 and is the son of John Mulcahy, b. 1756. I also found a Lawrence Mulcahy who was born 1823 who may also be related to the family...

If you'd like more details, please let me know...
Mulcahy - PA (Johnstown, Pittsburgh, Central City)

Hi. After a lot of digging, I have finally uncovered a long lost branch of my family tree. I am trying to locate living relatives of the following folks:

Francis J. Mulcahy - born in Ireland 2 Dec 1897 and died 15 Feb 1967 in Johnstown PA. His parents were Patrick and Ellen (McNamara) Mulchy (note different spelling.) He married twice. His first wife died 4 Jun 1954. They had two children:

Virginia Mulcahy Trexler (husband Paul A. Trexler)- in 1981, these folks were living in Johnstown.)

Robert P. Mulcahy (wife Elizabeth Mastrolembo) - in 1981, these folks were living in Central City, PA.

Francis then remarried 25 Jun 1955 to:

Elizabeth "Betty" (Sullivan) Mulcahy born 23 Feb 1901 in Youngstown PA, died 13 Fed 1981 in Pittsburgh, PA. her parents were Timothy J. and Julia McCarthy Sullivan.
Elizabeth was blind and was the first person in Johnstown to own a "Seeing Eye" dog. I believe one of her dogs was named "Anne." She had three brothers and two sisters (Tim Jr., James, John, Nell, and Alice(Jones)) that all died relatively young.

If any of these people sound familiar, please contact me.

Thanks.
Joann

Hi...I'm new to this. I'm looking for James Mulcahy born about 1811 in Tipperary. He married Margaret Waters born about 1815. It's assumed they were married about 1836. They came to America by 1838 because their first daugher, Johanna was born in Vermont. We've hit a wall and can't find James anywhere. If this is close to you or anyone, please find me!

Kelli (Mulkay) Watts

Sounds like they should be related...St. Joseph's parish was one of the main areas that my family lived during that period. Check out the "Mulcahey" family tree in Ancestry.com...

Let me know what else you have...such as, when did they leave Yonkers, and do you still have anyone left in Yonkers?

i am in Tipperary but i also do professional research. however, i sometimes do free look ups especially on these threads which are of a personal nature.

i am going regularly to National Archives and National Library in connection with my work. i could look up parish records for you or civil records depending on dates.

re: the mulcahy brothers, i was hoping that you had another connection. i have found the census but i had not seen the WWI and WWII draft so thank you. I can't confirm yet that the Dennis is the right one but it is progress.

if you want me to look up the McGovern-Heslin, give me details as much as you can. Leitrim is a very small county so you could be lucky! very beautiful too.

thanks.

Cecile Mulcahy

She was from Tipperary but came to the US in 1854. I know nothing farther back so any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi I'm researching the Mulcahy line. My GGreatgrandfather was named Timothy Mulcahy. The best info I have on him is that he showed up in the Henderson Kentucky 1843 tax list until 1852. In the 1850 census it looks as if he was born around 1799 He married Jane Yarbrough Clayton November of 1846 in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He had three children at that time Marion born 1834, Denis Timothy born 1849 and Elizabeth born 1852. Any info on the Mulcahy's or Timothy would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is kmulcahy1952@hotmail.com

Have just read you request re the above (I'm afraid I'm a late comer to these sites).

My great grandfather was Martin Mulcahy who lived in just outside Tipperary.

He was born c1843 and joined the British Army stationed I think at the barracks in Northampton. He married Esther Williamson (born c1843) and eventually retired from the army and returned to Ireland, where he became a postman in a village just outside Tipperary (the name eludes me at the moment). the had 2 children Margaret and Ellen (my paternal grandmother).

Unfortunately he was catholic and she was protestant, and when he died (date unknown) pressure was put on her to bring the children up as catholics. Consequently she returned to England with the assistance of Countess Spencer.

I would be very grateful for any further information you or any of your contacts could give me on my great-grandfather, and if you have an interest acn give more details of Ellen's descendants

I look forward to hearing from you in due course

Regards

Marcus Valentine
