Cindy- This might be too late for you. I just came across your post. I'm married to the great-nephew of Lee, Michael E. Mulford. I was given a "family" history by Aunt Carrie Mulford, now deceased about 10 years ago. Just got it out about 3 years ago when I started family history work. Lee is actually "Franklin Lee", but always called Lee. He & brother "Newt" (Newton) moved together from Iowa to South Dakota. Lee married Martha Bonnet and eventually moved back to Iowa to the Viola Center family homestead for seven years. Then they moved back to SD and homesteaded land for a few years, the came back to Iowa for a short time and finally moved to Nebraska, around "Niobrara" sp? and Creighton. Both Lee and Martha died in Creighton. They had thirteen children Edwin, Wilmer, Velma, Kenneth, Geraldine,Violet, Vivian. Alice died at 5 y/o,Also Raymond died at 5. 4 childrn, no names known, died in infancy. This is probably way more than you wanted, but I also have much more if you want, PLUS family picture of adult children of Samuel & Rachael, including Lee. Can email. Good luck! I'm at the carzy point!! Janet

Civil War veteran Nathan MULFORD Cook of Pittsford, NY

Hi! Desperate for info about Nathan Mulford Cook. Can't find anything on the Cook message board, so I'm trying a longshot that Mulford is a family name. Nathan was born circa April, 1842 in NY, the son of William Henry Cook and Phebe R. Cook, both of whom were also born in NY according to the 1860 census. At that time, the Cooks were living in Pittsford, NY. The Cook family also included Nathan's siblings William Henry, Phebe E., Edward P., and Mary G. Cook. Nathan and his brother, William, enlisted in the Civil War in August, 1862 and both died in October, 1862. If you have any info about this family, please contact me directly at vprofitt@rochester.rr.com. Thanks!

Re: 1st wife of John Mulford (1606 - 1686)

I have recently been doing some investigation of the question of the identity of the first wife of John Mulford and the mother of his children. I have come to some very different conclusions. Please bear with me because this is a rather complex chain of evidence.
The first piece of evidence is the will of George Miller, dated January 29, 1657. The witnesses to the will were John Miller and Jane Mulford. Assuming that the transcriber didn’t simply mistake “John” for “Jane”, about the only person this could be this early was John’s first wife. Also, she signed by mark, whereas John was literate.
The second piece of evidence is an entry in the East Hampton records for May 8, 1652. “It is ordered that John Mulford and John Hand shall have their mony repaid that they have laid out of the land that was given them for their estate in England wch was resived up agen that is to say Two accers from John Mulford and one from John Hand.” The seventeenth century syntax is pretty involved, but it is clear that John Hand and John Mulford were both entitled to an estate in England and were apparently joint heirs. It is probable that John Mulford and John Hand were therefore related, either by blood or by marriage. The fact that John Mulford’s brother William was not included suggests that this was a relationship by marriage. The most probable explanations are that either (1) John Mulford married John Hand’s sister, or (2) that they both married sisters.
John Hand was from western Kent, a region about 20-30 miles from London. An entry in the East Hampton records for Dec. 31, 1663, states “Be it knowne unto all men by these presence that I John Hand late of Easthampton upon Long Iland in Consideracon of the following Conditions Doe Discharge Disclaime or acquit all Right title Claimes interest wch shall or should have Decended to me in house or Land formerly sould in Ould England At Trumbridg and Ashford in Rootam in the County of Kent by my father John Hand Deceased. . .” Hand genealgists have established that John Hand’s wife was Alice Gransden, daughter of Henry and Alice (Harris) Gransden. Moreover, the land which John Hand (and presumably therefore John Mulford) inherited in Kent was Gransden land. The book “A Hand Family” by Harriet Woodbury Hodge (1981) states “The 1621 will of Henry Gransden, father of Alice and Frances [wife of Josiah Stanborough, another Easthampton settler], as well as the 1615 will of their grandfather Nicholas Harris, show that the Gransden girls and their sisters were heiresses to land in Stansted, Tonbridge [Trumbridg in the EH records], Wrotham [Rootam in the EH records] and Asshe in Co. Kent.” This suggests that John Mulford’s wife was a Gransden. Further checking shows that Henry and Alice Gransden’s oldest daughter was JOAN, born (or baptized) July 1, 1610 in East Peckham, a village about five miles from Tonbridge in Kent. “Joan” is not quite “Jane”, but close enough to suspect that they may be the same. This would make John Mulford’s first wife Joan or Jane Gransden. Obviously this is not proof, but it is strong presumptive evidence.

David Hudson

Ran across some info which might solve the problem. RosaLee at gypsy38@earthlink.net has John Mulford as marrying Anne(e)Sparkes B:3 Apr 1614 Surrey England. Daughter of James Sparkes. She and John Had Thomas,Sr. B:1640 John B: 3 Jan 1635 and Anne. All born in Surrey England. This makes sense. Sherrill Foster says John Mulford was a widower when he married Friedeswiede Osburne in 1663. In her lecture she states that there were 5 Osburne children and 5 Mulford children. She does not say how many were the children or stepchildren of Friedeswiede.

I'm searching for information on a Thomas Mulford born in 1808 in Chemung, New York. He married Louisa Hilster, had several children and then after her death Elsie Rightmore. Around 1860-1870, he moved to Kent, Michigan to follow one of his sons there. He died there in 1896. I believe that his mother's name was Eve. I'm looking for any information anyone might have.

Can anyone identify for me the parents and grandparents of Thomas Mulford of Pluckemin (a village in southeastern Bedminster Township, Somerset Co., NJ), who married Elizabeth POTTER and had children William P. (~1805-1880), Samuel, Barnabas T., Eleazar, Mahlon (~1815-1887), Mary, and Mary Elizabeth, all probably born between about 1800 and 1825? Failing that, can anyone tell me which Mulfords, if any, are buried in the Presbyterian Church burial ground in Pluckemin, and what data appears on their stones?

I am trying to tie this Thomas Mulford into a larger overview of the North Jersey Mulfords. I suspect he was a grandson, perhaps even a great-grandson, of Thomas 4 Mulford (1719-1765) (Thomas 3,2, William 1). But I'd like proof, or at least supporting circumstantial evidence. Thanks for any information.

Additional information found that Phebe Mulford, married to Thomas P. Hammond, was born about 1811-13 in East Hampton, Long Island, New York (not Sprout Brook, as previously reported). The "History of Montgomery County" lists her father as Abram Mulford of East Hampton. However, Phebe's death certificate indicates her father was Jonathan Mulford and her mother was Fanny (maiden name unknown). This Phebe lived and raised a family upstate NY, and died in Canajoharie, NY. I have eliminated this Phebe being the sister of Thomas Jefferson Mulford of East Hampton. Looking for birth information on this Phebe, b. in East Hampton, NY around 1811-1813.

All the trees I've found on-line show John Mulford's 2nd wife, Friedeswiede, as the mother of his children, who were born in the 1640's and 1650's.

She was married to William Osborn and busy having Osborn children at the same time John Mulford's children were being born (ref; Savage, James; Savage's " Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England...", (Originally published Boston, 1860-1862 in 4 Volumes)Vol.III, page 319)

John Mulford and Mrs Friedeswiede Osborn weren't married until May 1663. Savage says "His[William Osborn]widow married John Mulford of South Hampton, Yorkshire E. They are the children of Jeremiah Mulford (b. 1813) and Nancy Eleanor Bartholomew. Died 11 Oct 1897 Quasqueton, Iowa. I have since been to the cemetery located him. He was the son of James Mulford and Sarah Carr. Albert's brother was my 3rd Great Grandfather.
Louis,

It appears that we are distant cousins. After e-mailing you privately I did some further digging with what I have available to me here. Albert H. Mulford was the 4th child of Russell B. Mulford & Melissa Valentine. Melissa was born 21 November 1823 as the 1st child of Jonathan Valentine & Elizabeth Kress.
Melissa & Russell were married 18 August 1843. She was the grand-daughter of William Valentine & Joanna Crane who are also my gr-gr-great grandparents. If you need futher info I have quite a bit more, though not on Russell & Melissa's descendants. Theirs was at least the second marriage between Mulford's and Valentine's, illustrating what I sent to you privately.

Thanks for a pleasant surprise!

Don Valentine

On their daughter Harriet's death certificate it lists her parents as Jeremiah and Nancy Bartholomew Mulford. Do you happen to know who Jeremiah's parents are? I have more information on this family after they left Schoharie County that I will be happy to share with you, and would appreciate any information you can share with me.
well, that is great! thanks for the info on the diary. i will do some more searching through google, etc. i will comb through the 120th history to see if there is anything else i can find about wavr. i have been searching on line for medical/hospital records for the war, but have so far not got very far.

i read through another notice that wavr was also wounded at gettysburg on day two. that perhaps will cause me to amend my speculation (and, short of some real prood, it will remain purely speculation) about howard france being treated by wavr. however, it might mean that they were in the same hospital and started/cemented a friendship, etc. do you know the extent wavr wounds?

if you read the detailed histories of the gettysburg battle, you'll find that there were several field hospitals operating. i have no idea where howard france was taken. he did recover and resumed his enlistement until the end of the war.

are you familiar with hope press and books, in saugerties, ny?if not, you should definitely check it out. they have a ton of books on civil war history, new york regiments, etc.

lastly, if you be so kind as to keep me posted with any info you come across re: wavr at gettysburg, comments from soldiers about him, etc. likewise, i will let you know if i come across stuff about him.

thanks again.

peter bunten

note: i mention again the 120th ny volunteers. this unit retained its identity and regimental flags throughout the war, even though it was at various time "folded in" with other units, including the ny 20th.

i don't know ell mulford, but i am familiar with wavr - - he was a lieutenant in the civil war, assigned as a surgeon's asst. my interest in him is that he either befriended or, more likely, treated my great-great grandfather, howard france, who was wounded in the second day of fighting at gettysburg. howard's son's name was walter alexander van rensselaer france.
you mention van ren's diary - - do you know where i can find a copy of this?
thank you, and good luck.
sincerely
peter bunten

New information. Edward III married a second time about 1923 to Blanche (unknown surname) from PA, probably in Los Angeles. He died there in 1929 and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery. His mother, Anna R. Mulford lived in Los Angeles at the time of his death, and died in the fall of 1932. She is apparently buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Chicago. Still looking for information on the child of this Edward's first wife, possibly Edward Aplin Mulford IV, the daughter of the second child (Elizabeth Daugherty (nee Mulford), Katherine born about 1902 and the third child Austin Everett.

Looking for information on the family of Edward A Mulford Jr, b 1851 Caseyville, KY, d 1896 Evanston. He was a railroad ticket broker, principal in the firm Mulford & McKensey. He married Annie Childs Reeves (1851 St Louis prob c. 1930 La Jolla CA). There were three children, Edward III (August 1875) who may have been a traveling salesman of roofing products; Elizabeth Cecelia Mulford (Nov 1876), probably married Harry Daugherty, and Austin Everett Mulford (May 1886) who may have become an actor. I have a hint that III had a son Edward Aplin Mulford IV who lived in CA. It is all hints, no firm information. Can anyone confirm any of it, or add any details?

One more thing, where did you find that he was a surgeon's asst.? One of the strange things I keep seeing about WAVR is that he is listed as such although he never performed this function (at least that I know of). Although he did have medical training and would become a doctor after the war, he was just a regular officer for the 20th NYSM. At the time of Getysburg, he was pretty much 3rd in command of the regiment, a major, and he was wounded there as well while capturing a Confederate Battle flag.

Wow, that is very interesting!. It may not be clear in the message, but Walter is my GGG Grandfather.

Actually, it is my understanding that Walter's diary is now on display in the new visitor's center at Gettysburg. I got to take a look at it when it was still in the hands of a private collector, and he gave me a copy of it based on his own transcription of it. My uncle and I are working on a book about Walter and much of it will be based on ther diary and other family tradition. The story of how it left the collectors collection is one that is also pretty interesting. If you do a google search for "Walter Van Rensselaer diary", you'll find some news articles about it.

I would love to know more about your ancestor. WAVR is my "favorite" ancestor to learn new things about, and to hear stories about/from people who knew him is always exciting.

Thanks,
Eric

After chatting with you, I pulled out the copy of the diary I have and the first page I saw mentioned WAVR playing Euchre with several of the officers...among them Lt. France. I looked up the roster of the 20th NYSM and noticed a Lt Demetrius France. Are you of any relation to him?

I am assuming from your posts that Howard was in the 120th?

Also, I wonder if you can tell me the names of Howard's other children.
Hi Maxine! I know that your message is old, but thought I would write anyway. My Mulfords are from Delaware Co., Schoharie Co., Greene Co. & Otsego Co. in New York. The photos that you have are probably relatives of my Mulfords. Do you have any date on the photos? My Mulford family tree is quite extensive, and perhaps I could help to identify them.
Thanks, Lou Ann

Hi JoAnne! After reading your post, I did a bit more research. I found Nancy Bartholomew Mulford -- whose birth name is Nancy Eleanor Mulford. She probably went by the name Eleanor, which is why she is listed in the census by that name. So, I think I have the correct Jeremiah Mulford.

Jeremiah's parents are Smith Mulford (born 1790 in Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY) and Hannah (?) (1789-1858). Smith Mulford's parents are Anthony Mulford (b. 1770 in Ireland) married Sarah Smith (b. 1771 in England).

The children of Anthony & Sarah Mulford are: Mary Margaret "Peggy" (b. 1789); Smith (b. 1790); Anthony, Jr. (b. 1794); Samuel S. (b. 1800), my 3rd Gr. Grandfather; Jacob (b. 1803); Jane (b. 1805), my 4th Gr. Grandmother from another family line; and Moses (b. 1807).

The children of Smith and Hannah Mulford are: Samuel (b. 1811) m. Maria Rickhow; Daughter #1 (b. 1812); Jeremiah (b. 1813) m. Nancy Eleanor Bartholomew; Daugher #2 (b. 1815); Valentine A. Mulford (b. 1818) m. Charlotte "Charity"; Ephraim (b. 1819) m. Jane Decker; Joel Milton (b. 1825) m. Sylvia M.; Margaret (b. 1827) m. John Mulford; Daughter #4 (b. 1828); Daughter #5 (b. 1830).

My e-mail is Lou4656@aol.com if you want to share more Mulford genealogy.
Hi JoAnn! I do have a Jeremiah Mulford born in 1813, Broome, Schoharie Co., NY, but I have him listed as marrying Eleanor ?, born 1813. Here are their children: Hannah, John, Sally, Harriet, William and Rosalie.
Is this your Jeremiah Mulford? If so, I will pass along what I have. Lou Ann
