Camille, Paul Auguste and Jules Muller
I am trying to find out more about my grandfather, Paul Auguste Muller, his brother Jules and their father Camille. According to family legend, the Muller family, who were French speakers, came originally from Alsace-Lorraine,and moved to Lille after the Peace of Frankfurt in 1871 when the area became German. At some point thereafter Paul, who was born about 1864, came to England to work with Hiram Maxim as some sort of gunsmith, (he and his brother and father were described as mechanics in various places), and Paul married his landlady's daughter, Louisa, whose late father had also been a gunsmith.
According to the 1891 UK census, Paul's birthplace was Paris, yet according to the 1901 UK census, it was Russia, though he is noted to be a French citizen. The Paris suggestion sounds unlikely, but the family did have a link with Russia, in that Paul's brother Jules worked in Russia and married a Russian woman. He brought his family back to the South of France to live, though not before one son was shot by the Bolshoviks. He ran a hotel in the Promenades des Anglas in the 1920s and 30s.
Paul disappeared in about 1923,we think with another woman. I can find no trace of his death certificate in the UK, and would be keen to hear from anyone who might have details on this family.
