Mumpower/Little/willis

Hello,

I am trying to find info on my great grandmother and I keep dead ending..its
moms grandmother and they have little info on her and they want me to try
and help them. Her birth name was Martha Jane willis but her married name
was Martha Jane little and she was born may 8th 1882. I know we fit in you
info I found somewhere but can't figure out where. My Grandfather was Jesse
Mumpower and my grandmother was Maggie Elizebeth Mumpower and her birth
name was Little. They lived in Appalachia Va. for all the years I remember
back then. They had many children, 2 died when they were very young. My mom
would have been Ruby Mumpower at the time and her sisters were Hazel, Bonnie
and Alice(twins) George and he lives in Big Stone Gap, and Vernon and Lewis
both dead.
If you know anything please let me know if you could.

Looking for family of Mary Magdalein Mumpower, married to William Brandt, 5 Oct. 1865 in Caldwell, MO. They had daughter Lillie Etoil Mumpower, born abt. 1868 in Kingston, Caldwell Co., MO. She married Nolah Sanford Rigdon 22 Jan 1890 in Kingston, Caldwell, MO.

CORRECTION: Rena Catherine Rutherford Mumpower and Rachel Elizabeth Rutherford Mumpower are half sisters. Their father was John Rutherford, Rena's mother was Sarah Leonard and Rachel's mother was Catherine Holsapple. Rachel married Isaac Booher Mumpower and Rena married his son, Isaac David Mumpower whose mother was Sarah Ann Sharrett.

John William Mumpower died in 1919 in Johnson City, TN and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery along with wife Julia Scott. Gertrude died in 1905 and is also buried with the family. On the right of John and Julia is an infant that died in 1907. John's sister Rosa Lee Mumpower married Charles Williams and Rosa and Charles is my aunts grandparents. For some reason Rosa's grave and John and Julia's is on top of one another with stones nearly touching. Gertrude's stone is nearly touching that of Rosa's son Lawrence. Not sure if they were double stacked or what the deal is. John and Rosa Lee were children of James C. Mumpower and wife Mary. In all they had 12 children. I just went Sept 27 and took pictures for my aunt.

Kathy yes in deed that is the same jessie, my Aunts (twins) are Bonnie and Alice and Uncle George still lives in Bigstone.There was no daughter named ann though, the other daughters are Ruby and Hazel.My Mother is Ruby.Thanks for sharing what you know, and I will do the same if I find out anything!

My grandfather was Jackson Mumpower. He had a brother named Jesse, but he was married to a woman named Nanny Tranbarger. I asked my mom about him, to make sure I had my info right, and she said there was a Mumpower family who lived near them in Appalachia named Mumpower, who was a very distant kin. She thought the father's name was Jesse. He had a daughter named Ann (my mother's name is also Ann, and she went to school with the other Ann) and twin daughters named Bonnie and Alice. Possibly a son named George. Are these your Mumpowers? I don't have any info on them, I wish I did. Good Luck!

Patti-My mother's maiden name is Mumpower. Her grandather is also Jesse. I remember visiting great uncle George when I was a kid! My mother and I still reside in Big Stone Gap VA.

Mumpowers/Bookers cousins from Washington County, VA

A friend sent me information about my Ornduff line and I discovered these cousins!

Elizabeth Booker married Lewis Orinduff, September 21, 1848 by Reverend William Hancher. Our family historian has verified that this Mr. Orinduff was in our line.

My grandfather was Jesse Mumpower and they lived in Applachia Va when I was a child. Uncle george Mumpower still lives in Big Stone Gap Va. My Mothers maiden name was Mumpower, Ruby and she Married my father, Robert Sharrett from Tenn and va area. Hope this helps someone.

Robert D. Mumpower

My grandfather was Robert D. Mumpower who is buried in East Hill Cementary in Bristol, VA/TN. Does anyone have information about his father? I believe his name may have been John and he had a brother William who is also buried at East Hill. My grandfather died at a very early age in 1916. He was in his late 20s. Robert had two sons--William Robert born in 1913 and Earl Newton in 1915. I would appreciate any information.

MUMPOWER, VERYLE Veryle Grant Mumpower died March 16, 2004. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004, 2:00 p.m., in the Oregon City Elks Lodge. Mr. Mumpower was born March 26, 1929, in Portland, OR. He lived here all his life, except for about four years in Eastern Oregon, and about six years in Seattle, WA.

He graduated from Oregon City High School, Vanport College, and Willamette University. He was an attorney in private practice.

He married Patricia Bescup in 1957. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Mumpower; daughter, Marian Mumpower; son, David Mumpower; and five grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the Elks Eye Clinic. Arrangements are entrusted to Crown Memorial Center, 503-653-7076.

Researching the Mumpower family in VA , TN, NC.

Researching a William Mumpower who married Julia Scott around 1890. WM. born aaround 1868. Julia born around 1876. Lived in Johnson City and then moved to Yancy Co., NC. Four or five children were born to them - Ottie Augustus, 1894: Gertrude, 1896; Harry; Fred Jefferson 1899; Ralph 1904. William is not carried in the 1930 census and Julia is listed as the head of the home. Ottie died in his job as a fire engineer about 1916 buried in Mica Cemetary in Yancy Co.NC along with a Leora Silvers Mumpower. She had a son William Mumpower born about 1916. Fred Jefferson married Freda Gardner and had one son William Edward Mumpower born 1922 in Yancy County, NC. WE Mumpower and his parents Fred and Freda lived most of the lives in Swannanoa, NC. WE's wife, son, and grandchildren live in Swannanoa, NC today. Daughter lives in Oklahoma City, OK. Can you help me locate the father of William Mumpower, born c. 1868.

Barbara, I don't see that your questions about Benjamin Willis were ever answered. I have that Benjamin Willis was born Jan 24, 1817 in Grainger County Tenn and died June 28 1886 at the age of 69 years, 5 months, 4 days. He is buried at Buena Vista in Randolph County Indiana.

William Hancher Mumpower was the father of Lear/leah Mumpower. She would have been a one-half sister to Bruce, Bailey, Nevada, Eureka, Carnelle, and Reeves. Her mother was C(K)atherine who married a William H. Mumpower. Census records indicate Lear was born about the time Catherine wed William. Catherine was possibly a Booher. Does anyone have any information about Lear. Lear is buried in the family square in Booher Cemetery with William Hancher and her step-mother Annie along with two children belonging to Lear.

I am not sure if I can help but it is possible that Robert was my grandfathers brother. I have just recently started researching my Mumpower line. My grandmother left William in the late 30's to early 40's and moved to Maryland with 11 children so I do not know much about that part of the family. Here is what I have found.My grandfather William Perry b. 7-23-1890 to 1893 Washington County Va. d. 5-28-195_ had Brothers John, George, Robert, Joe. Half sisters- Mary, Martha and Lillian.
Half-brothers John Henry and Charlie.
I believe William, Robert, George and Joseph were in an instition in 1900 in Washington Co. Va. Father listed as John R. No mother listed. The page in the census I need is damaged so I will be making a trip soon to Richmond to locate.
I have found John R in the 1910 Washington Co. with all of the other half siblings.
If any one has more info. I would appreciate it. I have all info on this side of the family.

George Mumpower and Eleanor "Ellen" Leonard were my gg grandparents. I've got info back to Peter Mumpower, grandfather of George, and I'll be glad to share. My grandfather was Charles David Mumpower, son of Isaac William Mumpower and Nancy Ellen Mumpower (dau of James A. Ratliff and Mary Polly Leonard.) Polly A. was the oldest child and Charles David was next to the youngest. The youngest was Nettie (b about 1903, married Jack Canter.) You may e-mail me.

Dec 1999, I asked if anyone knew Owen and Rowena. Well, I have the correct info now. Owen A. Grubb, b ca 1878, mar to 'unknown', is father of Rowena.
Rowena mar Jacob (Jake) S. Mumpower, b 10-5-1874, d 8-9-1856. They were mar 2-24-1897.
Jacob is s/o Isaac Booher Mumpower & Sarah Ann Sharrett. He is a brother to my grandfather.
All three are buried in the Cleveland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennessee. I have pictures of the graves with headstones.
Also I have info on Isaac Booher Mumpowere's two families - 1-Sarah Ann Sharret and 2-Rachel Rutherford (my grandmother's sister).

I would appeciate feedback from anyone who has additional info on this line which my wife descends from. I show George married Ellen Leonard in 1846 and had 3 children; William Issac (b.1860 d.?), Joseph (b. 1864 d.?) and Marrion Henry (b. 1868 d.?). I only have further info on William; he married Nancy Ellen Ratliff (b. 1859 d.?) in 1878 and they had 8 children; Polly Ann (b. 1879 d. 1964 or 65 Kingsport, TN), Leah (b. 1881), James b.1865), Ernest (b. 1887), Ceton (b.1889), William (b. 1893), Sallie (b. 1895) and Charles (b. 1898)

Polly married Thomas Edward Hawkins (b. 1876 d. 1690?) in 1895 and they had 8 children: Mattie Beatrice (b.4/28/1907 d. 7/5/1999), Stella, Edna Inez, Margaret Louise, Mary Alice, Victor "Bud". Jewel Dee and Herbert Grayson Peters (a girl!).

Anyone know how to get in touch with H. Edward Mumpower who had a Mumpower website at one time? He indicated in a post in 2000 that he had a whole bunch of stuff on the Mumpower line.

I am especially interested in the descendants of Henry Mumpower and Mary Magdalene Lindamood if anyone can help.

I have a picture of George Issac Mumpower and his wife Nancy Ellen Ratliff, taken in the 1880's if anyone needs a copy let me know and I will scan and email it to you.

I am trying to locate the ancestors of a William Mumpower born about 1868 in VA/TN., Married a Julia Scott also born in TN born about 1874. They lived in Washington Co., TN, and in Yancy County. They had son Ottie Augustus born about 1894 worked as a fire engineer and killed in a fire in about 1916, buried in the Mica cemetary in Yancy County. He also daughter and another son Fred Jefferson Mumpower born Oct. 1899, and another son.

Also trying to locate the Mumpower who married Leora Silvers Mumpower, born about 1888, lived with parents in Yancy County, had son William, born about 1916.

I descend from Eli & Nancy (Gray/Grey) Willis through their son, Jacob Elza Willis who married Julia Elizabeth Spillers in Bangor, Michigan.

I have been researching this family too and found Sarah (Willis) & Hiram Gibbons. Around 1858-1859 they were in Beaver, Iroquois Co., ILL. Hiram had died and Sarah was living there with several children. In the 1870 census, Sarah (Willis)--indexed as GIBBONS is 60 years old, living in Aroma, Kankakee Co., ILL.

I have not been able to find the right Martin GRAY & Louisa J. (Willis) GRAY after 1840 census and their marriage. However, I did find in the 1850 census, a Martin GRAY b. abt. 1813, VA & wife, Louisa b. abt. 1816, NC & several children in Stewart Co., TN. I think this might be a name coincidence... ?

Barbara, do you know the parentage of Charles Henry GRAY who's named in Robert Willis' will? He was living with Robert & Mary Willis in the 1850 census. He moved to the Bangor, Michigan area with the other Willis'. I thought he could be the child of Martin & Louisa GRAY.

Another question: Did you know that there were two Charlotte MUMBOWER's? And if so, do you know how they relate? One is listed as Robert Willis' stepdaughter in his will and the other one could be a great-niece. I researched them and know where the two women ended up living & family etc. but don't know for sure how they relate.

Last question: Do you know if the WILLIS were Dunkards? like the SPILLERS, RARICKS, FUNK, MONK??

I'm researching the Mumpower line for my nephew's wife, whose g-g-grandparents were George Mumpower and Ellen (Leonard) Mumpower.

I'm almost certain that Ellen is a granddaughter of Frederick Leanard, PA > Washington County, Virginia, Rev War vet. But through which of his numerous sons? She was married circa 1846, so I can't tell parentage from the 1850 census (in which, wierdly, George & Ellen show up in Sullivan Co., TN, in a census that shows they were both both in TN --- all other censuses have them born in VA and living in Washington Co.).

Al that is a long-winded way of saying: Does anyone know Ellen's parentage, or does anyone have an theories about it?
