I don't know about Dixie, but I'm interested in Georgia Muncriefs. My friend's mom (whose tree I'm working on/playing with) is, I believe, descended from the first William Alexander Muncrief (1715-1766) through his son Josiah.

I can give you information on the William Alexanders and their ancestry. I wouldn't bet on the reliability of the info, as much of it came from unsourced online trees, but I would be happy to share.

My own brick wall (well, one of them) on this line comes a couple of generations later, when
Jonathan David Muncrief (~1827 Wilkes GA - 1897 Tallapoosa AL)
marr 13 Nov 1846 Tallapoosa, GA
Mary Elizabeth Bailey (~1827 South Carolina - 1884 Tallapoosa AL).

Who are Mary Elizabeth's parents? She had at least one sister, Sarah b abt 1824 South Carolina; and quite likely another, Ann, b abt 1830 in SC.

Searching for information on the following Moncrief Family.
My Grandmother was "Mrytie Mae Moncrief" married William Marvin Jenkins, Polk Co, Ga.
Mrytie Mae Moncrief was daughter of Artemus(Artimus) L. Moncrief. (Mother, I do not know yet). Her brothers were: Issac Moncrief, James Moncrief,Columbus Moncrief. All from Polk Co,Ga I believe.
Artemus L. Moncrief was son of Thomas Jefferson Moncrief and his wife Mary Ann Robertson. who were married 20 Aug 1833 in Greene Co,GA. Census says Artemus was enumerated as "Tema Moncrief"? in Polk CO,Ga.
Thomas Jefferson Moncrief was born 1811-1813 in Greene Co,Ga son of William Alexander Moncrief and his first wife Sarah Elizabeth Nicholson. He died between 1880-1890 in Greene Co,Ga.
If anyone can Please add to this or at least help me to confirm any of it. I would appreciate all the help.
Thank you so much,
Wanda
My Grandmother was a Moncrief from Crawford County Georgia. I have a book on the Moncrief's going back to 1804 mostly from Crawford and area counties. I am trying to track down possible relatives in Currituck, NC., esp. William Alexander Moncrief II. Trying to find out where he came from and how he got to Currituck. If you think any of your Moncriefs might have some relation to mine, please feel free to email me

Re: MONCRIEF FAMILY

In the book, " WHO WAS WHO AMONG THE SOUTHERN INDIANS", written by Don Martini, published in 1998, there is this info:

MONCRIEF, WILLIAM, Choctaw, was born in 1821 and attended the Choctaw Academy in Kentucky in 1831 -1832. He was possibly the William who married Margaret ( born 1832), and had a daughter named Sophia. Sophia married Willis Martin and had a son names Sam Martin, born in 1864 and was a resident of Robinson in 1902.

This source info can be found in "The Choctaw Academy", page 476. Also in Applications for enrollment, Choctaw Nation, Cases 431, 5675.

There is another listing as well:

MONCRIEF, WILLIAM, Choctaw, married Paulina ( born 1857) married in 1877. He was the father of Wallace, Lula, John, William, and Talbert.

This source info can be found in Applications for Enrollment, Choctaw Nation, Case 433.

I checked the Dawes Rolls and the family listed shows the following as Choctaw by Blood,( census card # 433):

Roll # 835 Moncrief, Wiliam 56 yrs. Male 3/16
Roll # 836 Moncrief, Jeff 23 yrs. Male 3/32
Roll # 837 Moncrief, James 20 yrs. Male 3/32
Roll # 838 Moncrief, Wallace 17 yrs. Male 3/32
Roll # 839 Moncrief, Lulu 15 yrs Female 3/32
Roll # 840 Moncrief, John13 yrs. Male 3/32
Roll # 841 Moncrief, William Jr. 10 yr. Male 3/32
Roll # 842 Moncrief, Tolbert 6 yrs. Male 3/32
Roll # 843 Moncrief, Mary M. 3 yrs. Female 3/32

I also found
Roll # 14548 Moncrief, Margaret 74 yrs. Female 3/8
She is listed as an individual on Census Card 431. It owuld appear that this Margaret may be the Margaret who married the William born in 1821.
My Great great Grandfather was Major WIlliam Moncrief. His was half French and half Choctaw, married Margeret Hall who was full blood Chickasaw, her Native name ws Malhanna (i think thats how its spelled)...They had 5 sons and 6 daughters.William was a Indian Scout for the new Ft. Sill...he died in 1872 at the age of 52 of a "skin condition". After his death his widow ran the stage stop/post office/general store at Pauls Valley. Outside Chickasha Oklahoma on Old Freds road is the Moncrief Cemetery. The land was owned by William and Margaret and they donated the land at the top of the hill east of their house that was also the first house built in the valley...I would very much like ant information anyone may have on William and his family. William's granddaughter Hazel R. Anderson (Holcomb) was my Grandmother and i will be very happy to share what i have with anyone for more information on William and his wife, and his children. WHat happen the children when they grew up? who did they marry? where did they move to? etc etc...thank you for your help, Jena R. Holcomb Shadwick

MONCRIEF

I don't know if this info will connect with your line or not, but considering the fact that there is Choctaw in your line, there must surely be a connection of some kind worth checking out. I have a book which was published in 1891 entitled " LEADERS & LEADING MEN OF THE INDIAN TERRITORY _ CHOCTAW & CHICKASAW". In this book is the following:

SAM MONCRIEF ( CHOCTAW)
This gentleman was born at Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1851, his parents being both Choctaws. When a child, his parents moved from the old State and settled at Ft. Arbuckle, while Sam was sent early to school at the Chickasaw Male Academy, Tishomingo. Until his marriage in 1871, he spent the time looking after his father's stock, but soon embarked in his own interest in the vicinity of Fred, west of Purcell, where he has 700 head and a farm of 1800 acres under cultivation. His first wife, Margaret Hall, dying in 1883, he married John Stowe's widow, Josephine Moss, who uynfortunately died in 1889, leaving him in charge of a family of four children: Mary Jane, Walter Lee, Georgia, and Dammy, the oldest of whom is sixteen years. Mr. Moncrief has had much experience with the wild indians while residing at Ft. Arbuckle, and lost many a hoof through the agency of these midnight marauders. He remembers his father and a party of his friends pursuing and killing nine of their number, three of whom fell to the share of Muncrief Sr. who , riding upon them with a double barrel shotgun loaded with buckshot, made sure of his game. Mr. Moncrief has an extensive claim to be adjusted by the Indian Depredation Committee.

SAMUEL MONCRIEF MARY JANE MONCRIEF

As I've reread this info, I'm beginning to
think that the Same you've spoken about might
have been brother of my Mary Jane Moncreif.
Mary Jane was my maternal grandmother, born in 1851,
El Dorado Springs, MO. At least that's the
information I have thus far.

I was hoping this Samuel was her father. But see now
that the dates are all wrong for that?

Her father's name was Samuel. He signed for
Mary Jane to marry Robert McElfresh in so.
MO. Date of this marriage was Oct, 1873.

Do you have any additional information you can
share? I'd certainly appreciate it.

I'd like to get my hands on that book, too. LOL :)
Might put some more puzzle pieces together for me.

God bless.

Thank you so much for the information. This
certainly sounds promising. Mary Jane - if this
is one and the same - was my ggrandmother.
I will email this other person and see if all
the info fits. I've read - in various places -
about the "widow Moncrief" who ran the stage
coach line but couldn't find a connection.

If this is our line, then I find it very
exciting!!! I've not seen this particular book
that was named. But do know that there is a
book on the Moncrief's in one of the Springfield,
MO, libraries. Didn't know about it when I was
in that vicinity several months back. Will
need to retrace some steps, I believe.

Thanks again and God bless! :)

I, too, am descendant of Moncrief family. I know that
my ggrandfather's name was Samuel Moncrief and he
lived in southern MO. He had a daughter named
Mary Jane, born 1850, so. MO. I believe he
was born in TN, but that is not a definite at
this point in time. Do you happen to have
names of other Moncrief children born to Wm.
Moncrief? Thanks so much. God bless.
