Jennie Mundell was the sister of my grandfather Milford Lamont Mundell. Other brothers were Charles and William. John and Isabella (Crawford)Mundell were their parents. William and Esther Mundell were their grandparents. William was the brother of John Mundell sr. of the Mundell shoe company in Philadelphia. William Emmigrated from Ireland (via Liverpool on the ship Wyoming) on 4-12-1850 with other siblings Jane, David,Mary,Eliza. Another brother James came 6-13-1850. John emmigrated (via stowaway) in @1843. John Mundell married twice more (I think) after Isabella died in 1901. (Catherine? and then Viola Backes . John died in 1932. A lot of Mundells are evedently burried @ MT. Moriah cemetary in phila.

I married into the family and surprisingly it is pronounced "Mundle" by one half and "Mun-dell" by the other half, although it is spelled Mundell by all!
Most of the younger generation insist on the phonetic pronounciation of Mun-dell.

Re: James Mundell b.1688 Uster, Ireland

Hi All,

Well I’ve ignored this Peebles Parish Record from the LDS site a couple of times because the date is 10 years off (of birth date, about 1688) and in Scotland. This document is a christening, not birth, in 1698. I’ve tried to cross-reference this in an attempt to disallow or credit it against the House of Tinwald (Tynewald) records. Their Roberts and James dates don’t correlate so I guess I’ve disallowed, for now, a connection. I always end up back in the House of Tinwald (Tynewald) records, as the dates of the Cameronians religious strife and their James and Roberts are somewhat close to our James’s possible fathers dates. Their problems most probably would have caused, in some Mundells, the desire and need to escape from Scotland to Ireland. See House of Tinwald (Tynewald): http://genforum.genealogy.com/mundell/messages/152.html for reference
The reason I tried to cross this is Robert and James (as most of you know) are very very predominant in the House of Tinwald (Tynewald) even though that is true in many Mundell families in Scotland, USA, Canada and Australia. So anyway I’m putting this out here to see if anyone else has tried to or wishes to peruse it, as I will too. Ireland is an absolute dead end. The Mundell genealogists I had contact with in Great Briton (England, Scotland, Ireland) say we already have more than most families that migrated have, in reference to Ireland genealogy, and to not have a parish in Ireland makes the task insurmountable and even if we did have a parish that it is very probable the records have been destroyed in the past and continuing civil strife. The LDS Church is continuing to copy parish records in Scotland and posting them on their genealogy site so we might get lucky in the future. I’m going to post this or something similar on the Scottish and Irish genealogy sites to see if we might get some help on the descendants or relatives of this James and Robert Mundell to help us ascertain or disallow a connection to us.

Steven R.

Hi Lissa
I have tried again to attach The Mundell Sags but without success so I will type the important page for you as it is written
.

The Mundell Saga

Alexander Mundell was the last of his line to answer to the Mundell name. Alexander had 8sonsnoneof whom had any sons of their own. The Mundell Saga is featured in a paper of that name researched and edited by Erik Norgaard of Denmark. It is available from the Dumfries Family History Society. It records the invasion of Normandy by Aarmud, a Danish Viking, who was eventually, granted lands which were referred to as Armundville / (Aarmund’s Estate) which eventually got changed to Magnaville? Mandeville. It was from Normandy that Geoffrey d’Mandeville set sail with William the Conqueror and became the forbearer of all the Mundell s in the English speaking world. The paper goes on to show how Geoffrey rose to become the Earl of Essex in 1141 and later William; his son became the third Earl of Essex. Erik then refers to a document by R C Reid which indicates that it was in 1200 that the Mundell s appeared is Scotland in Dumfries, and how Richard The Lion’s daughter Aufrica, gave her daughter in marriage to a De Mandeville and it was the son of that marriage Rodger de Mandiville .great –grandson of Richard the Lion, who became a competitor for the Scottish Crown in 1291. There is also a reference to an Alexander Mundell as rector of Wallace Hall, which became the supreme college of Scotland in the 1700s. This is the great uncle of Camilla Windus Mundell; Annie Camilla’s notes record thatAlexander came from Tinwald Dumfries and was the last of the famous de Mandivillies who came over with William the Conqeror. A full list of his documented references is held at the back of the 16 page document and further research work has been undertaken by Erik since then.

This is what is written regarding the Mundell /de Mandivillie name hope it is of some use to you.

Kind Regards Bill

Oh, very very interesting! Perhaps the Mundells did originally come from the Normandy town ( area ? ) called Mundeville, or Munderville, in France.... and thence some on to Scotland ....???? And it was the throne of SCOTLAND, not England! I have accurate info that the first Mundell to Nova Scotia was a Joseph Edward Mundell (or Edward Joseph) who served as an officer with Lord Nelson, from Manchester, England, then to Halifax Nova Scotia, later to Guysborough County, NS. Have not found a connection yet in England as don't know his parentage.

Many thanks for this tidbit of "history" ??? !!

Phyllisa Mundell

LissaGA@msn.com

Ah, well, No . . . not England; not fled. It is said that the Norman (or Anglo-Norman) from whom our Mundell progenitors descended WAS one of the handful of aspirants to the throne of SCOTLAND after the death by accident of William 111 in 1286 A.D.

Thank you so much for your reply!!!! I would love to come to Scotland to meet some Mundell relatives someday for I know they are there, too!! I have come across some "info" in my search for my roots that says the Mundells had to flee from England at one time as one of them was a Pretender to the Throne! Wonder if any truth in it? Also, wonder where they first came from. Some sources say Mundeville in France.

Again, many thanks. Have yet to come across any Mundell who pronounces our name like they do in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, across from Cape Breton Island.

I have Watson relatives, accurately traced to Fowling Hill, Aberdeen, Scotland. Came to USA and ended up in Nova Scotia (on my mother's side). Want to visit Bellshill someday, where my Great Grandfather spent some time, when he visited some Watson relatives.

Phyllisa

I am interested in finding the William Mundell, Sr. Bible.

William was born in 1794 in Benton's Ferry, VA/WV. He married Rebecca Roppe in 1817. They had the following children:

Jacob
Sarah Ann
William
Matilda
Malvina
Eli
John
Tazwell
Elmira
Rebecca
Harriett

I am trying desperately to find the correct death date for their son, Jacob. I cannot find actual death records, but would like to see if maybe it is listed in the family Bible. If anyone has this Bible, has seen it or knows where it is, could you please let me know. Thanks!!
Nikki

Do you happen to have a death date for William and Rebecca's son, Jacob? I have his death date listed as 1854 as well, but his son, Leonidas was born in 1860. I don't know where Jacob died to double-check his death date. Thanks!
Nikki

I am compiling a Mundell database and recently found Robert Elijah Mundell. In the 1920 census he is living with his grandparents, Elijah and Kate Mundell. I had always thought her name to be Katie Lee, though her marriage to Elijah was her second. Elijah Mundell was first married to a woman named Adelia, b. 1853 in Wisconsin. She is listed in the 1880 census, so I am assuming she died between then and 1883, when he married Katie. Elijah and Adelia had one child, a son named John (as indexed in the 1880 census), who would be the father of Robert Elijah. I cannot locate John in any census records, but there is a James who seems to fit. Would be interested in sharing more information.

John Mundell and Robert Elijah Mundell are additions to the family tree I just discovered today. According to Barry/Woodruff, Elijah Mundell was married to Katie Lee. In 1880, however, his wife is listed as Adelia and they have a son named John. By 1900, however, Elijah's wife is listed as Katie L. and they had been married a mere 16 years. In 1920, the household consists of Elijah, Katie, and Robert Elijah, grandson. Logic would indicate that this is John's son. I have yet to locate John in any other census records, though there is a James Mundell in the vicinity that, other than a different place of birth for his mother, seems to fit. I'm not sure where Bertha comes in to play, but I will check your tree against mine and try to figure it out. Feel free to email me directly at strayolive@gmail.com. Look forward to chatting more.

Mike

Maybe a bit late as it is over a year since your message but...

I have some information on the Mundell and Law line - plus some certificates. They are of only fringe interest to myself and the two lines are linked by the marriage of George Law to Jessie Mundell in 1897.

The actual link into my tree (Warwick) is by the marriage of Jane Law to Thomas Gass in 1895. Interestingly(?) the Warwicks appear in the family lines of both these two. I have not yet determined if they are both from the same lines of the Warick family though.

If still interested then get in touch.

Mel.

Thank you! Have you found any records that indicate John, or James, was the father of Robert Elijah? It does seem to fit. In one record (I would have to re-research it to find it) he is listed as a son of Kate's daughter, Bertha. That did not seem to fit. Although it could be a coincidence that Kate and Elijah's children and spouses had the same first names! Bertha Barcus married James Kellums-James Mundell married Bertha Barins???? Please feel free to compare your notes to my tree (Kellums) to see if there are things we can share. I only know that Kate and Elijah raised Bertha, although Elijah was her step-father.

Mundell name pronounciation

I grew up pronouncing my last name Mundell as:

MUN - DELL (emphasis on both syllables equally, MUN is similar to the word Done and DELL is like 'farmer in the dell' the old nursery song.

However, I have heard the name "Mundell" pronounced in the Guysborough Co. Nova Scotia part of the world quite differently, almost like the word "bundle"... they pronounce it there as "Mundle" , almost like saying bundle!!! Very very different pronounciation from my roots (southern part of Nova Scotia and Mass USA).

How do you pronounce it wherever you live all around the world?????

My last name is spelled MUNDELL and not MUNDLE yet I understand some folks with my last name (MUNDELL) do pronounce MUNDELL like it is spelled MUNDLE.

I would love to hear how you pronounce the name that is spelled MUNDELL. Thanks.

I have received information that the full name of my ancestor from England who settled in Halifax, then Arichat, then Sand Point Guysborough Co., is either Joseph Edward Mundell or Edward Joseph Mundell, born approx. 1780 in England and died approx. 1865 in Nova Scotia. He used to have a mfg. business in Halifax, after having served as an officer under Nelson at battle of Trafalagar, believed to also be a lightkeeper at Sand Point, where Mundell Pond and Mundell Hill are close by. Raised large family, several born when he was quite elderly. Descendants today are in families such as Carter, Martin, Walsh or Welsh, Jameison, Parks, also possibly Hadley and Carrigan. Married Margaret P. Smith from Truro, NS. One granddtr. was Margaret (Maggie) Matilda Martin, RN, (never married), former Supt. of Payzant Memorial Hospital, Windsor. Seeking relatives.

Thanks! No, I did not get your earlier email. Sounds like the Mundells who went to WW I you mentioned must have heard it pronounced like that overseas. I much much much prefer the MUN - DELL pronounciation! My father was always adament that we correct anyone who used it like it was spelled Mundle! So I have always been very conscious of how the name is pronounced. I wonder how it is pronounced in England, Ireland, Scotland and France (where I understand the first Mundells came from, Mundeville, or Munderville, in Normandy).

Thanks! More and more sounds like most folks pronounce MUNDELL like that (MUN - DELL and not like it is Mundle).. Don't know why where my father grew up it was pronounced like Mundle for it was even there spelled MUNDELL. It still is pronounced like that today in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, where the Mundells go way back. The original one came to NS with Lord Nelson as an officer in the British Navy anyod stayed in Halifax to start a business, later to Guysborough County. Today there are still Mundell-named places in that county that go way back to the first Mundell (Joseph Mundell from Manchester, England), i.e, Mundell Hill, Mundell Pond). I wonder today how they pronounce our name over there...???

Thanks for your info so much!

Had sons Joseph (a lighthouse keeper),Henry,John, James,Edward, daughters Jane, Clementina, Elizabeth. Henry Mundell was my grandfather who married Harriet Matilda Loach(she first married a Parks);lived at Sand Point;her mother's maiden name was Charlotte Laurie and her father was Joseph Loach. My father was Joseph Henry Mundell (late of Barrington NS), had one brother George, and a half-sister, Weselena (Wessie) Parks, both lived at Sand Point or Mulgrave.
Andrew Mundell and Mary Hamilton also had a son John Mundel born 1805 in Torthorwald. I'm told that wives often went home to have their first babies with their mothers. Both he and father Andrew were blacksmiths.
I have more info on John's descendants if required.
I am the daughter of David Mundell,Sr. He is the son of Bertrand and Myrtle(Swanson) Mundell. Bertrand Mundell's parents were Alexander and Amelia(Bertrand)Mundell. Alexander Mundell was the son of Abner and Melinda (Founds) Mundell. I have been working with my father and researching our family. I know numerous Mundells in the Washington State area. I have some information on more recent Mundells and also some info on the Mundell's that located in Roslyn, WA (George, Edgar) All these Mundells are descendants of James Mundell and Margaret Garrett. Would you be interested in further info. Please contact me joczkey@gmail.com Yvonne
