You're welcome Betty. I'm actually going to be finally unburying my 1991 edition of the book the day after tomorrow, weather permitting. I will be happy to check for you if no one else gets to their copy before then. Do you have a public tree here, and if not, what lineage do you have so far?

The Munger Book and other geneology records state that the first Munger in America was Nicholas Munger and all Mungers decended from him through one of his two sons, John or Samuel. We are on John's side, I think.

I spent only a little bit of time searching because I would like to go back before Nicholas and I ended up finding a passenger record for another Munger before Nicholas arrived with the Puritans in Guilford, CT in 1639.

Two court documents I have seen state earlier origins of Nicholas's ancestors in Visby, Gotland. The document referred to it as Isle of Wisby, but today it's Visby.

Meanwhile, if I find something I will happily let you know.

Traci,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to contact Bulbrier Press and maybe I can get some action on corrections. Meanwhile, if you hear of possible new info or where I can turn to get help on the Hudson River Mungers ancestors please contact me. Henry C. Munger was listed in the addendum of Hudson River Mungers. It seems that we should be able to connect them to Nicholas Munger.
Regards,
Betty

Betty,

You are welcome. My copy of the book is in storage and I mean to dig it out Tuesday. My Husband is 11th ggs of Nicholas Munger so I have a lot of data. Unfortunately, I am not an authority on the Mungers. My mum-in-law's cousin was originally thought to be working on the next book. I called her and asked about where to direct corrections to and she said she isn't working on the book, but due to the amount of information she does have, she mentioned wanting to try to organize a type of family reunion to bring together all of the new or updated data on the Munger tree.

I have not spoken to her in several months. I will try to drop her an email and ask her if she still plans to do this.

I have a smaller book here called Family History of Munger-McNutt-Collett (our line) and Henry is not in it.

Meanwhile, you might consider emailing Bullbrier Press and asking them if they have been hired to publish another update and if so, to whom should Munger tree corrections be sent to. If you find out, consider posting your finding here in a new thread so others will know what to do also.

Traci

Thanks for your reply to my post concerning Henry F. Munger. I don't have a copy of the 1991 revised edition of The Munger Book, however, in the past I have been informed that it doesn't have a change concerning Henry. I wrote to a Henry Munger several years ago in Ithaca, NY who was involved with the revised edtion, but the letter was returned. I'm assuming that he may have passed away. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find the returned letter. I was disappointed because the erroneous information on the names of Henry F. Munger's parents needs to be corrected. If you have any ideas about how I can correct this I would like to hear from you. I've never been able to connect his lineage back to any of Nicholas Munger.
Betty

Hi Betty,

Have you checked for an update to Henry F. Munger in the 1991 revised edition of The Munger Book? Some families got a copy when it was published. That's how we got ours. If not, you can still buy a copy from the Publisher's website - Bullbrier Press.

www.bullbrier.com

I think it costs about $50. I think Ancestry only has online, the 1915 edition images.

Henry F. Munger

I'm researching Henry F. Munger b. 1809 in NY. His father was Gabriel Munger b. 1780. The Munger Book of 1915 has Henry's name in the addendum under the Hudson River Mungers, but has his father listed as Frederick Munger. I have discovered a baptismal record for Henry that lists his father as Gabriel, so the book is in error. I'm very interested in tracing Henry's ancestors further back if possible. Does anyone who have that information? I would apppreciate it if you would reply. I do have a good amount of info on Henry's descendants that I would be happy to share with anyone who is interested.
Thanks,
Betty

I do not know if this is your Steven Munger, but I have a cc of the death certificate for a Steven Munger, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Date of death was 4/25/1952. Sadly the date of birth was only 12/13/1951, so he never even reached age one. Father is listed as J. J. Munger. Mother was listed as Geneiveve Lilly. Unfortunately, the cause of death is handwritten and I cannot make it out. At this time, that is all I have. I am not comfortable posting the image of the death certificate here.

Gertie Belison Munger m. Frederick Anthoney Gearhart on September 13, 1906 in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa. Gertie was born January 19, 1887 in Jasper Co, Iowa and died June 25, 1973 in Des Moines, IA.

Their children are listed here (where I found the above via Google Search):

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/a/l/Patricia-A-...

A search here at Ancestry pulled a 1870 census showing Zaidee Forker and her family (parents, siblings.)

In the Munger Book, there are two more well-known Leroy Mungers. They are the son and grandson of Zolvin Munger. There are other Leroy Mungers but not mentioned like these two. I don't know what is special about them, but many of the Munger family names were passed down to children. It is common in many families.

I don't think it's a popularity issue.

I'm replying in general all of the other posts here, where info is being requested on the Mungers. I'm hoping to help anyone out in their queries, because this is just one little thread in the WHOLE Munger surname board. So posting a query here, is not as successful as posting a NEW THREAD in the Munger surname board.

Also, the 1991 ed of The Munger Book is much more extensive than the smaller trees. The 1915 edition is available here at Ancestry.com and it is also available at about 24 state libraries nationwide. The copy at the Conn. State Library has been taken out of circulation due to its condition.

The 1991 edition can be purchased for $50 at the Bullbrier Press website. The 1915 edition can be purchased, but it's only a nicely bound photocopy - its cost is around $75.

If queries are posted here, asking for help with Munger ancestry, it helps to state whether or not you have a paid Ancestry membership and can even view the data that is here at Ancestry.com, before someone researches for you only to find you can't view the results.

In RE the above post where you state that census records mostly list Leroy's place of birth as NJ, I found him in the 1860 US Fed Census (Franklin Twp., Michigan) and his place of birth is clearly spelled out as, "New York." The lines read in part):

MUNGER, Le Roy / 44 / Male / Farmer / New York
MUNGER, Henrietta / 30 / Female / No Occ. / New Jersey
MUNGER, Smith / 7 / Male / No Occ. / Michigan
MUNGER, Sarah / 6 / Female / Michigan

NOTE that his name is indexed in Ancestry records as "Le Roy" with a space between "Le" and "Roy."
To emmasansom:

I just came from another query asking about how to get the book as well. The publisher, Bullbrier Press, has the updated version (it was updated in 1991) for $50. Visit their website and complete the form if you want one.

1) Parents of Robert Sylvester Munger: a) Henry Martin Munger; and b) Jane Catherine McNutt.

2) Parents of Henry Martin Munger: a) Sylvester Munger; and b) Sene Ingham (as far as I can tell at this point. My copy of the Munger book is buried in storage at the moment and my PC just cruises the web too slow - so I'm doing this the hard way.)

3) Parents of Mary Collett (w. of R.S. Munger): a) James Hamilton Collett; and 4) Margaret Ann Daviss.

*Robert Sylvester Munger is known for many accomplishments and inventions. His last residence, the Munger-Mudd Home (aka Arlington House, aka Munger Mansion) at 331 Cotton Avenue (SW), Birmingham, AL (in what was old Elyton) is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visit the website for The Library of Congress and just use the search term "Munger." You will get quite a few great results back for various Munger family members, and some even have photos. I was fascinated by it. The report and photographs of the Munger-Mudd Home are one of the results.

Enjoy! I know I did, and still do everytime I go back to The LOC website.

I just checked out the Bullbrier Press website and I stand corrected (again.) The current book you would get IS the update done in 1991.

I suggest notifying the publisher of the error in the book on your ancestor.

Bye!

I credit marylea1296 above for already providing the title in this thread:

The Munger Book 1639-1914 by J(eremiah)B. Munger.

I am going to call Uncle Bill back and ask if I can have a copy of the "update" that was prepared back in the early 90's. I don't know why it was never published into an additional (or newly complete) book. If I get it, I will check with Ancestry.com as to how I can add a copy to their document archives for members to search.

Hi there distant cuz-in-law!

Thank you so much for replying with the info on your Leroy Munger. Actually, Mr. Southard and myself stepped "away" from the back and forth on this message board and we've both been working on this puzzle for hours, since yesterday.

It truly is a puzzle because the Leroy Munger that Mr. Southard has been trying to get ancestry on, has no matches to dates, places or times, which are clearly reported in The Munger Book (1915 1st ed.) The two Leroy Mungers you speak of, are indeed decendants of Stephen Ingham (not Ingram) Munger, and both are clearly listed in The Munger Book, as well as at FindAgrave.com, wherease Mr. Southard's Leroy Munger is also at FindAGrave.com but with a different tombstone photo, date and location.

I do believe I found prevously unknown sources that hopefully tie Mr. Southard's Leroy Munger, to Eliab Munger, s. of Ephraim Munger, Jr. - who is in The Munger Book, although you won't find a clear entry of him in the book. I'm actually putting the sources together now, and rechecking my data before sending it to him. If it's correct, I will be submitting it to my Husband's 2nd cousin, who I've heard is working on what may be the 3rd revision of The Munger Book.

RE my comment on Stephen's middle name - his mother was Asenath (Ingham) Munger, and I have seen his signature on documents as "Ingham."

You did get my attention about the "Munger Family Bible" you have in your possession. It would be an extremely important register of information. Take extremely good care of it. My suggestion, is for you to turn it over to the Library of Congress, along with the rest of their Munger items. They will be able to go to great lengths to repair and preserve the data it holds. You especially should do this, if it's the Munger Family Bible referenced in the beginning of the 1st edition of The Munger Book by J. B. Munger. He mentioned in the intro of the book, that "an old family tree was found in the attic of Josiah Munger's home at Madison, Conn." I do not know what happened to this "family tree" but inside it, there would be a hand-drawn tree with branches, that list the start of what ended up in the book. If it is what I think it is, do not sell it to anyone - it's a world of valuable information and if the LOC finds the Munger Book important enough to have among their collection - then they will need to preserve this record.

Marjorie Munger Middleton was daughter of Lillo Munger, and granddaughter of Stephen I. Munger. Leroy Munger, Sr. was Lillo's brother.

Traci

My line goes:

My Husband > Living Munger Watts > Mary Munger Montgomery > Ruby Munger > Robert Sylvester Munger (bro. of Stephen Ingham Munger and h. of Mary Collett, Birmingham, AL - see Arlington House, 331 Cotton Avenue SW, Old Elyton, Birmingham, AL online - the history is also at the Library of Congress website.)

I have the 1991 revised Munger Book but it's in storage until Monday. So I've been going on the 1st ed. here at Ancestry.

Should you need any other dat

You state that Henrietta is the daughter of Abraham V. Hunt?

The 1870 US Fed Census shows Leroy, Henrietta, Smith and Isabella along with Katy Hunt in a household, on the lines immediately above the household for an Abraham V. Hunt, wife Mary and son Henry W. Hunt.

Problem is that the A.V.H. on this census record, is YOUNGER than Henrietta so this A.V.H. cannot be her father. Is the A.V.H. on this record a Jr. of the Abraham V. Hunt you mention as being Henrietta's father?

The location of the census is Franklin, Lenawee, Michigan, USA.

MUNGER, Lee Roy (not YOUR Lee Roy Munger)

Well, The Munger Book includes the alternate spelling of Monger. I looked at the records, and they appear (to me anyway) to be a trancriber's error, who probably wasn't familiar with the name. I spent quite some time today, scanning The Munger Book here at Ancestry (it appears to be a scan of the original and not the revised version done about 1991) and I admit I could not find Leroy. I couldn't even find his kids. Then again, it's always possible to assume that not EVERY Munger is in the book.

Can you provide any additional details on Leroy or his decendants? The more details you provide - the easier it might be to locate him (or a decendant) in the book's index.

I also am thinking that Leroy is not his first name. He may have used it, but it might not be his first birthname.

What I do have in my little condensed Munger-McNutt-Collett book, are two Leroy Mungers - but the spouses and dates do not match. Nonetheless, they are direct decendants of ONE of the sons of Nicholas Munger:

Nicholas Munger > John Munger > Ebenezer Munger > Ebenezer Munger, Jr. > Jesse Munger > Sylvester Munger > Stephen Ingham Munger > Lee Roy Munger > Lee Roy Munger, Jr.

Stephen I. Munger was born 1855 and died in 1921. So his son could NOT be your 1816 Leroy Munger.

But, There are a few more Leroy's I found in the Munger Book index. The Ancestry server is a little slow sometimes, so it takes a while.

I ran across this article in an old Weld Co, CO newspaper and I thought someone might be interested.
Thanks Anna

Publication: Greeley Tribune (Greeley, Weld County); Date: Sep 23, 1891; Section: Front Page, Page 1

DIED

SAYERS--In Greeley, Saturday night, Sept. 18, 1891, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Munger, Dr. A.D. Sayers of paralysis.

Doctor Sayers is the father of Mrs. Munger, and came to Greeley last June from Adams, Gage county, Neb., in search of health, also to visit his daughter. The trip to Colorado benefited him greatly but his age (near 72 years) was against him, and the cause of his death showed that nature had reached its limit. The funeral took place from the Methodist Episcopal church Monday afternoon, Rev. W. C. Madison officiating.
I know my great grandfather is listed there and I can't locate the book anywhere even though Amazon keeps saying that they are getting it for me...then I get a notice that I need to extend the time...then up the $ I will pay for it etc...this is a frustrating hobby!
Re: MUNGER, Lee Roy (not YOUR Lee Roy Munger)

Stephen Ingram Munger was my Great Great Grandfather, I know my Grandmother, Marjorie Munger Middleton, had an uncle named Leroy (or LeeRoy, need to check on the spelling)

There is a very old and quite hefty Munger family Bible which was found in a fire in Dallas a few years ago and it was very kindly returned to our family from a complete stranger due to some excellent detective work! They even had damagaes restored as well as possible. I will seek permission to scan it and share in case anyone is interested in the Munger family inscriptions, which of course lists births, deaths, marriages...

I noticed there was a "Royal" Munger in the bible's family entries and wondered if that was Roy or LeRoy (Lee Roy) Just wondering if this could be related to the confusion over the two LeRoys, as in Royal appears to be a given name but was not used in real life? Also, I have noticed Lee Roy and LeRoy for the same person, so the spelling isn't always the same. I will look at the bible next chance I have to check the dates. I hope this can be of help! Also, I am fairly sure my grandmother's uncle LeRoy lived on Preston Road in Highland Park, (Dallas) currently the residence of Jerry Jones.

Hoping to find some relatives, I am very new to this site.

Thanks!

Traci:

Thanks for the tip about the "Le Roy" part. I'll be sure to search again. I somewhat wonder if the "Monger" part is a mistake due to the fact that the family plot in the cemetery is Munger. The family also lived on what is now Munger Rd.

Bill

Yes, Abraham Valentine Hunt is her father and her mother is Margaret Neafie. She was their only daughter. The A.V. Hunt that is her neighbor is incorrectly labeled. It is actually her brother, Abraham Donmanuel Hunt. (Another census error.) I've been able to verify that with a plat map that had the correct "A.D. Hunt" labeled on it.

If you'd like, go to Rootsweb.com and you can go directly to my family tree. You can enter it as "wsouthar" in the search and it should pull it right up. I'm going to try to update it right now so that it's complete.

Thanks!

I'm not sure, but my 4th great-grandfather is LeRoy Munger, b. 1816 in New York. So it's possible that the name had been in the family long before the 1st World War (he died in 1874). I know that the Munger Book didn't have many LeRoy (or any other variation) in it when someone researched him for me.

Found his headstone in the Franklin Township Cemetery in Tipton, Michigan. It states that his date of death was October 15, 1872 and that he was aged 56 years & 5 months. Therefore his birthday must have fallen in the April/May 1916. Not 1910 like the census record indicated. This will definitely change the Leroy's I've been seeking. If anyone can search the "Munger Book" that'd be great. I currently don't have access to Ancestry.com.

Thanks,
Bill Southard
My husband is a MUNGER. The name LeRoy is a family name. Occasionally, it is spelled Leroy in a census. Hope that helps. The line of MUNGERs that you are searching doesn't seem to fit with my husbands' family.
