Hello there
William Munro's parents were John Munro and Agnes Motherwell according to William's death certificate. It is likely that John and Agnes married in New Monkland Lanark on 01 Jun 1797. I have further data for Agnes but have drawn a blank on John's ancestors. I have a lot of material on the children of William and Christian Munro but still lots of questions. Are you a direct descendant of William and Christian?
Regards
Hilary Allison

MUNRO; Hugh b1829 (An intriguing thought!)

Hugh MUNRO b1829 Ross and Cromarty, married Ann TODD b1818 Byers Green, Durham. They settled in Lamesley, Durham (now part of Gateshead) and ran the Ravensworth Arms public House (that's the original pub of that name, the present-day Ravensworth Arms was previously known as the Clavering Arms). Two children were born to them, Ann and Hugh. In 1901 their son Hugh, who had married Amy Mary JARVIE, were living in Lamesley and their residence was called 'Novar House'. This has set me wondering whether Hugh's father might have had some connection with the MUNRO's of the Scottish Novar Estate, also in Rosshire?

He had several brothers and sisters.
In the early 1860s Donald (1825) came to Canada and the British Columbia Cariboo gold fields. We went exploring one day and never came back. Two weeks later another exploring party saw a flag and a tin cup hanging in a tree near the Bear river and stopped to investigate. On the bottom of the tin cup was scratched:
"Donald Munro; lost in the wood; is from Inverness, Scotland, born, Jun 1825."
Nearby was the body of Donald, wrapped in a blanket.
The newspapers of the day late mention that Donald "was orderly Sergeant in the army of Nicaragua under Gen Walker, and has a brother, an editor of some paper in Toronto, Canada."
His brother George wrote asking for more information.
The tin cup was evidently sent to "relatives in Inverness."
I am trying to track down this family.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Richard
Hi

I don't know for sure, but despite the fact that the article appeared in a California newspaper, I suspect the Cariboo in this case refers to a mining district in British Columbia, Canada. Because there weren't that many newspapers in the West at that time, many of them carried articles which dealt with events far from what one might expect to be there "reader territory".

If you want to see a satellite view of the area you can bring up Goggle maps and input "Quesnel Forks" which is apparently the closest (3 km NW) "place". There's more info on the web about the mines if you search on the term "Cariboo Mine" (using the " to bracket the search.

Good luck

Vern D

Hi all Munros

I am looking for forbears and descendants of Gilbert Munro, born 1799. He married Catherine Ross 1825 or Catherine McKenzie (name in dispute) born 1805 and their 8 children.

They had 8 children (William, David, George, Thomas, Isabella, Alexander, Mary and Johanna) and at some point after 1830 emigrated to Victoria, Australia. One of their sons, David born 1830, was my great great grandfather. I am looking for any information on Gilbert’s family (mother father, siblings etc). I believe his father may have been William and his mother Mary N. Patterson but that is all I have.

Are you able to assist. David and his wife had 14 children and lived in Warren NSW. I am collecting information backwards from me and have reached Gilbert with not a lot more to go on.
Dumb me! I did not go back far enough! Your Daniel Munro is my great uncle and he did marry Ellen Smith! I show that he was born Dec 26 1884 at Goatfoot Row, Galston, Ayrshire. He passed away Oct 20 1950 at Joanna Terrace in Blantyre of a coronary occlusion at 65 years of age. His parents were Hector Munro and Marion McGill. Grandpa Hector died at 36 and was a coal miner. My grandmother Marion remarried and came to the US in 1905 arriving at Ellis Island on Christmas Eve with my grandmother Margaret Howard and her other children(biological and step. They ended up in Pennsylvania. Marion also had an illegitimate son Francis Hyslop McGill-sometimes Munro is added so Hector must have raised him as his own.

The only things I have about Ellen Smith are that she was born about 1889 in Blantyre and died after Daniel. They had a son Edward born about 1905.

How are you related? This is exciting!
:O) Sue

I have a Daniel Munro born May 30 1886 and residing at 46 Meadowhill, Larkhall, Lanarkshire. His parents were Daniel and Isabella McGill Munro and he would be a first cousin of mine. Unfortunately I do not know his wife's name.

Most of my ancestors in Scotland were coal miners and the name Daniel Munro does appear very frequently in my line so it is a good possibility that he may be related.

Do you have anything else on him? I will go back and look in my papers when I was researching through the Scotland's Own website. I had to stop because it ws getting very expensive.

:O) Sue

Catherine Munro, Nova Scotia ca 1809 - after 1881

Catherine married Hugh Chisholm and had several children that I know of. I would like to know who her parents were and when she/they came to Nova Scotia and from where. She and family found in Pictou in 1871 and 1881 census (Hugh dead in 1865).

Also, my great gma, Isabella (Cath's and Hugh's dau) was married in Halifax in 1869 and the minister performing was George Munro Grant, a well known minister and later an educator. Was he related to Catherine Munro's family?

Thanks - will also post on Nova Scotia board.

Nick

Hi Colleen,

I tried to email you off board, but I received a failure notice. You may email me at rmc82_2000@yahoo.com

I was very glad to hear from you. I have made a little headway on this family, but have many blanks. I have attached the information I have. I do not have Christine Munro's death certificate, but I do have

1. William Munro's birth record (son of Malcolm and Helen) (This is my husband's direct ancestor)

2. Death record of Helen Munro (d. 1866) and Malcolm Munro (d. 1866.)

3. 1861 Middle Church census for Malcolm Munro.

4. Marriage record for William Munro and Janet Wallace (interesting thing about this is that the maiden name of Janet's mother is wrong on the certificate.)

5. Birth certificate for Helen Hunter Munro (daughter of William and Janet Wallace Munro)

You may already have these, if not I would be glad to send them to you.

You mentioned that you've started with Andrew Munro and Elizabeth Richmond. Are these the parents of Malcolm? I have tried digging around for an Andrew Munro (thee's a notation in a family bible a relative owns that indicats that Malcolm's father was Andrew Munro.

How are you related to the family?

Dawn

Munro of Teaninich c.1680

Can anyone please help me to identify Anna Munro of Teaninich who married Alexander Gray of Overskibo in the parish of Dornoch as his second wife in around 1670-80? They had an only son, John Gray of Overskibo, who was born 1682.

Alexander had a brother, Robert Gray of Arboll, who sold lands to Hugh Munro, 4th of Teaninich, who died 1701 at a very great age, although this Hugh inherited Teaninich from his first cousin, another Hugh Munro, 3rd of Teaninich, and hence there are quite a number of potential parents for Anna amongst the family.

I have drafted part of a pedigree of these families, but without success in identifying where Anna fits, so I should be most grateful for some wise help, please.

Many thanks,
Caspar

PS I have the entry from Burke's Landed Gentry and from "The Munros of Fowlis" by Alexander Mackenzie, but neither answers this question.

MUNRO @ Tullich, Glenaray ARL SCT 1800s

According to a member submission on the IGI Angus MUNRO married Jannet McARTHUR in 1798 in the parish of Inveraray and Glenaray ARL SCT.

The IGI also lists from parish records the baptism of four children to this couple:
Martin – 1803 in parish of Kilchrenan & Dalavich ARL SCT
Duncan – 1805 in parish of Kilchrenan & Dalavich ARL SCT
Anne – 1813 in parish of Glenorchy & Inishail ARL SCT
Susan – 1816 in parish of Glenorchy & Inishail ARL SCT

Census returns show another son: Charles – born about 1811 in Inishail ARL SCT.

Census returns 1841 through to 1881 show Martin, who remained single, to be a farmer at Tullich in Glenaray ARL SCT. His mother Jannet is with him in 1841 and his brother Charles and sister Susan, both unmarried, are with him at that address in many of the returns.

Martin’s sister Anne married Angus BELL in 1837 and they farmed on a neighbouring property at Tullich South. One of their daughters, Mary, married a Duncan McCOLL and another, Isabella married a Duncan McNEILL who in 1891 was managing Tullich South farm for his father-in-law.

I believe that Angus MUNRO is the son of Duncan MUNRO and Christian FLETCHER who feature at Tullich in the 1779 Census of the Duke of Argyll’s Estates.
It is possible that his wife, Jannet McARTHUR, is the daughter of Charles McARTHUR and Ann MUNRO who are also at Tullich in the same Census.

I am interested in contact with any researchers of these families or of the Tullich area of Glenaray.

Laurie McNeill
Dunedin
New Zealand
