Andrew G. Basell of Assembely Church of God officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bergler sang “The Last Mile of the Way,” Mrs. Bergler “It Is Well with My Soul,” and John Capling, “We’ll Never Say ‘Good Bye’”. Burial was beside his wife at the Woodmere cemetery, Detroit, Monday. The body was accompanied to Detroit by his daughter, Laura, his son, Peter, and two grandchildren, Wayne and Lola.

From Gladwin County Record 10 MAR 1937:

Eli Murdock – Eli Murdock was born at Holton, Indiana October 24, 1849. On March 5, 1871, he married Miss Lucy J. Radley of Milan Indiana. When a young man, he was employed as a section hand on the railroad. There he received a fall, causing a fracture of his hips, which he carried through life.

Mr. and Mrs. Murdock and family came to Gladwin March 11, 1891, and settled on a wild forty acres of land in North Sage township which he cleared and there raised his family. Later he lived for some years in the city of Detroit with his children, but for a number of years of late he has lived with his son Porter in Buckeye Township.

About one year ago he received a fall, which caused him great discomfort and pain, and finally caused his death, which took place in the late afternoon, Friday, February 19.

He was an honest, earnest, peace-loving man, and lived the Christian life through the years. Beloved by all who knew him because of his kind, inoffensive manners and Christ like life.

His wife died October 30, 1916, two children in infancy and his son Ira in July 1935.

He is survived by Mrs. Theodore Roberts of Gladwin, Virgie and Milford of Detroit, Arthur of Cincinnati, Ohio, Delbert of Kokomo, Indiana, and Porter at home; also nine grandchildren and 11 great grand children.

Mr. Murdock possessed that greatest of qualities, that of always looking on the brighter side of life, never heard to complain, but always radiating cheer and comfort to those around him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
LUCY JANE (NEE RADLEY) MURDOCK'S [my great-great-grandma] OBIT from Gladwin County Record 09 NOV 1916:
Murdoch. – Mrs. Eli Murdock died at her home in Detroit Oct. 28, of pneumonia after a week’s illness.
Mrs. Murdock was born in Ripley county, Indiana, and was aged 66 years and 8 months. Mr. and Mrs. Murdock came to Gladwin about 25 years ago and had just moved to Detroit when Mrs. Murdoch was taken sick. She was a member of the Evangelical church. Services were held Oct. 31 at the home of her son, Milford, in Detroit.
She is survived by her husband and seven children: Mrs. Theodore Roberts of Gladwin; Milford and Ira and Miss Vergie of Detroit; Delbert and Porter Murdoch of Kansas; and Arthur Murdoch of Indianapolis.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
THOMAS IRA "TIM" MURDOCK'S [my great-granddad] OBIT from Gladwin County Record 07 AUG 1935:

Thomas Ira Murdock – Funeral services were held Saturday, July 20, at the J. Sutton and Son funeral parlors, 4147 Trumbull avenue, Detroit, for Thomas Ira Murdock conducted by Rev. Bertram W. Pullinger of Grace Episcopal church. Burial was at Oakview cemetery.

Thomas Ira Murdock was born at Milan, Ind. in 1881. He came to Gladwin with his parents when a child, and has lived here since excepting a few years which he spent in Detroit. He died July 17, 1935 at Herman Kiefer hospital, Detroit, of tuberculosis.

Surviving him are his daughter, Mrs. Eugene McSweeney, and his son Chester Murdock, of Detroit; his father, Eli Murdock; brother Porter; and sister Mrs. Theodore Roberts of Gladwin; sister and brother, Mrs. William Scherer and Porter Murdock of Detroit; and a brother, Arthur Murdock in Cincinnati, Ohio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
MILFORD MURDOCK'S [my great-granduncle] OBIT from Gladwin County Record 22 AUG 1951:
Former Resident Buried Recently – Funeral services were held for Milford Murdock, 73, on Saturday, August 4, from the Foshee Funeral Home at Twining. Burial was made in Whitney cemetery.
Mr. Murdock was born in Milan, Indiana, on October 30, 1878, and came to Gladwin township with his parents as a boy. He was employed by the McMann City Box Company of Detroit for 30 years, moving to AuGres six years ago, where he operated the Snow White Resort cabins.
Surviving are his wife, Emma; two sons, Arthur of Chicago and George of Farmington; one daughter, Mrs. Vera Challenger of Detroit; two brothers, Arthur of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Delbert of Missouri; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Roberts, Mrs. Wayne Roberts, of Houghton Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moe of Sanford and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Murdock of Detroit, were among those who attended the funeral services.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
TYPOS/MISTAKES/CLARIFICATIONS OF THE ABOVE OBITS:

1) The Murdock surname is periodically misspelled

2) Porter Murdock is called both Porter and Peter in his father's obit

3) Thomas Ira Murdock (my great-granddad) is mentioned only by his middle name Ira in both his father's and mother's obits. Grammie (Thomas' daughter) told me that her father used the nickname of "TIM", an acronym for his initials besides going by his middle name.

4) Lucy's death date is different in her obit from the date listed for her death in her husband's obit (Oct 28/Oct 30) and the twins she lost in infancy are not mentioned ("She is survived by her husband and seven children") although they are mentioned in her husband's obit 21 years later

5) Milford's obit does not give a death date, just a funeral services date of Aug 4 (he could have died at the end of July) and it says his survivors include only two sibling brothers yet it lists his sister Laura (Mrs. Theodore Roberts) as having attended the services

6) Delbert is not listed as surviving his brother Thomas in 1935 (all other siblings are listed) but he is listed as surviving his father in 1937

7) Virgie Odelia Murdock-Scherer is mention as Vergie in her mother's obit 1916, as "Mrs. William Scherer" in Thomas' obit in 1935, and as just Virgie in her father's obit in 1937. I still don't know the correct spelling of her given name. Grammie told me she went by the nickname "Dot" because she was so tiny, itty-bitty.

8) Grammie told me that the two children who died in infancy (mentioned in Eli's obits) were twins.

9) Throughout my interviews with Grammie over the decades before she died, her recollections of her Grandfather Eli (she and her brother Chet lived with their grandparents off and on again as children/teens) do NOT match the kind words written of him in his obit. She was afraid of him and his temper. He abused her periodically when she was under his care. She was still quite upset when she told me this in 2004, more than 1/2 a century after his death! Perhaps he redeemed himself before he died.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
GRAMMIE'S [Hazel Violet "Vi" (nee Murdock) McSweeney] REMEMBERANCES:
Great-great-grandma Lucy Jane (nee Radley) Murdock was an English Quakeress. Great-great-granddad Eli Murdock was cruel to the horses, always thrashing them, and his wife Lucy would stand on the porch, beseeching him not to hurt the horses. Grammie says Eli Murdock was English also. Eli couldn't read or write so his wife would read the Bible to him. Grammie and her brother Chet lived with their grandparents off and on when they were young while their mother worked in town. Eli was a farmer.
"Tim" was a nickname used by my great-granddad Thomas Ira Murdock. It was an acronym for his initials. Thomas also went by just his middle name Ira. Thomas was a farmer like his father.
Grammie was just 6-1/2 years old when her infant brother Richard died (he was 25 days old). Richard was buried under a cherry tree in their backyard. Grammie told me that her mother used to stare out at the tree from the kitchen window while she worked at the sink.
Grammie had scarlet fever as a child, and her Mother treated her for measles before Grammie was diagnosed [treatment at the time was similiar...bedrest and a dark room]. Grammie's feet would ache so bad that her Mother would get up and rub them for her. Grammie also remembers having a slab of bacon wrapped up around her neck and that it was VERY salty (Grammie didn't tell me HOW she knew it was salty-LOL!).
Chet got mumps; Grammie didn't; but their cat died from mumps at that same time according to Grammie.
Laura Murdock married Theodore Roberts. He wore an eye-patch, having lost his eye in a hunting accident.
Virgie Odelia Murdock was nicknamed was "Dot" because she was itty-bitty.
Delbert Murdock died of TB.
Grammie's mother, Laura Jane "Jennie" (nee Schuler) Murdock Geering, told Grammie a story about violets and that was how Grammie got her name.
Grammie was born in the morning. She grew up in Gladwin County, Michigan. Her nickname was Vi. Grammie said she was a brat in grade school. Her favorite subjects were art and singing. One of her favorite teachers was Miss Shack. Her best friend was Ella Cates. Grammie never finished high school.
Grammie didn't have a pet other than a field cat her father gave her [STORY: She was sent to the back forty to get her father for supper (lunch). As she approached, he shouted "Snake!" so she stopped in her tracks . He swung into action striking and killing the snake. She was frightened & started crying. He knew there was a litter of cats in the hedges/bushes, so he reached in, grabbed a kitten, and handed it to her. Grammie said the kitten scratched her all up.]
Grammie had a beautiful doll as a little girl with a walker and other accessories that she adored. Great-great-granddad William Schuler gave it away to some cousins when her family moved (how Grammie said it...she could have taken the doll WITH her)!
Grammie's favorite TV show was M.A.S.H.. She liked to crochet. Grammie loved to play basketball and could have made the team if she hadn't dropped out of school. She liked to watch baseball.
Her hair was honey blonde as a small child, then it turned brown. In the sun it turned reddish brown. Her eyes were blue. She was small boned. She was knock-kneed. She SAID she's 5 feet tall [LOL! More like 4'9" or 10"]. Her only religious upbringing was Sunday school as a child. She worked as a Colorist (tinting photos) and during WWII she worked as an Army Inspector, 3rd Class, for the Chemical Warfare Service and inspected packages and springs for rifles. She also worked under an Army Captain, supplying him with Secret Service of some kind.
She eloped with Eugene Clare McSweeney and they set up home in Buffalo, New York. Douglas Clare McSweeney was born 31 Oct 1923 in New York City and John Dryden McSweeney was born 16 Jan 1925 at home when they were back living in Michigan.
She broke her left shoulder, her forearm and her hip (at different times). She had scarlet fever, plurosy pneumonia, measles, chicken pox, flu, mumps, She had ear infections. She had her tonsils, adenoids, and wisdom teeth removed. She had a hysterectomy.
She was shy. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. Food she LOVED: french vanilla ice cream, homemade noodles. A favorite food memory was of boiled potatoes [I just know that there's a story there...sigh, I never got it before she died]. Food she HATED: broccoli
MURDOCK in Chattooga County GA
I am looking for information about Griffin MURDOCK, born 19 Jun 1907 in GA, died 4 Apr 1969 in Irwin County GA (Georgia Death Index data).
He married Chunnie Cummings before 1920 and left the family in the 1930's. They had at least two sons - Ed in 1927 and Robert in 1929. Chunnie is in the 1930 census with her sons in Chattooga County GA, but Griffin is in the Army in Oklahoma in the 1930 census.
Griffin was the son of William J. and Linna (--?--) Murdock, with siblings Ethel (1899), Ola (1901), Gordon (1904), Hattie (1911), Clyde (1913) and Willie (1916), and resided in Chattooga County GA in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. Will J. Murdock was born in June 1876 in GA, and died before the 1920 census. Linna (or Linnie) --?-- was born October 1882 in GA, and may have married again after 1920.
Will J. Murdock's parents were Benjamin (born ca 1825 SC) and Angia (born ca 1855 in SC) (--?--) Murdock, and his siblings were Nancy (1874) and Addie (1879), and perhaps more. They were in Dirt Town, Chattooga County GA in the 1880 census.
Does anyone have information about these Murdock families - their spouses names, additional children, etc.?
Please email Randy Seaver at rjseaver@cox.net.
SAMUEL R. MURDOCK
Samuel Robinson Murdock was born in Knox County, Ohio, November 22, 1832, where he resided for five years, his father dying in the interim. With his mother removing to Marion County, young Murdock lived with her till he had reached his eleventh year, when he was sent to live with his uncle on a farm. After spending three years here, attending the public schools during the winter, he returned to Marion County and was apprenticed to the trade of a printer. Having acquired a fair knowledge of the "art preservative," he, completing his apprenticeship, worked for a year at the case in Columbus, of the same State. The year 1853 was an almost unprecedented one for emigration to California from the Eastern States. Young Murdock catching the infection of travel and fortune-seeking, he started for this State in February of that year, accompanied by his mother. Arriving at Council Bluffs, the latter's mind rapidly underwent a change of purpose. Missing the company they intended going with, she abandoned her trip to California and returned to her former home, while young Murdock continued the journey, driving cattle across the plains. On September 5 following, he arrived at Park's Bar, Yuba County, and, finding ready work in the mines, he continued there during the winter. In the spring he went to Forest City and engaged in selling goods at that place for one year and a half. In the summer of 1856, his mother, concluding to rejoin him, met him at Marysville, and, accompanied by her, he engaged in farming on the Sacramento River on the opposite side of Eddy's Landing. Bent on a more active and business-like pursuit, Mr. Murdock, after-four years of a farmer's life, came to Colusa County, near Sulphur Springs, raised cattle and drove them into the mining camps and towns of Nevada. He at one time took up his residence in that State, remaining there from 1864 till 1867, following various pursuits, such as mining, farming and teaming. He longed, however, for a home in Colusa County, whose soil and climate and possibilities he had seen nowhere approached, and hence he returned and purchased the old Lane place, in Antelope Valley, where he conducted a hotel for some time. Ile arrived here just as the oil excitement was subsiding, and the copper discoveries were beginning to attract swarms of prospectors. In 1869 Mr. Murdock was engaged as a store clerk in Colusa, at the same time paying much attention to a sheep ranch he had purchased on Stony Creek. In 1871, seeing an opportunity for a bargain, he disposed of his sheep ranch and started with his sheep for Nevada, where he sold them. Since this time Mr. Murdock has resided continuously in Colusa County, with the exception of a pleasure-trip back to his old Buckeye home, made in 1888. He resides at the county seat and is largely engaged in the stock-purchasing business. In 1870 he took the census of Colusa County, doing all the work of enumeration by himself, and for this purpose visiting personally every house in the county. He has likewise served as city trustee of Colusa two terms.
Mr. Murdock was married , in 1872, to Miss Carrie Sedgwick, of Ohio, and is the father of two children, one of whom is dead, the surviving one, Bessie, being thirteen years of age.
Colusa County Biographical Sketches of Pioneers and Prominent Residents
Justice H Rogers, 1891: Orland California
Patrick James Murdock of Chicago, Illinios
Hi.............. There Murdock Clan, I am trying to find someone who lives in the Chicago area that can do a look up. "A Random Act of Genealogical Kindness" perhaps.
I am trying to find some information on my husbands line of descent. He does not know much of his father except that his fathers, father came from Ireland. His mother and father divorced when he was three and was unable to keep contact due to dysfunction on both sides.
He was able to attend the funeral and, it was July 1976 but,we do not have the exact date. According to other information we have, he died in Cook County, Chicago Heights, Illinois. He was born Nov. 25, 1921 and that his 2nd wifes name was/is ? Charlotte.
I don't know if this is like looking for a needle in a haystack. That is all we know of his father and are looking to order a death certificate from VitalChek.com but, need an exact date. I am just taking a chance because I have been unsuccessful in my research and, have been looking for a long time and, we live far from Chicago. A death certificate would at least give us some clues we hope. If I can return any favor I am a DAR and can help with any DAR patriot things. I am also Clan Gillis of the Clan Ranald which have been taken under the Great Scottish Confederated Clan Chatten.
Thank you for anyones assistance in advance,
Cheryl(Gillis)Murdock
mtDNA of Mary (MURDOCK) Whitney b. 1811 Winchendon, Worchester Co., MA
If your not interested in the discussion of using DNA testing as a tool, to aid in genealogical research ... please move on and skip this post :)
-------------------------------------
Many of us have heard of the success stories that have developed from the use of Y-DNA testing connecting male descendants of the same surnames [in most cases] to a common ancestor ... But what about the use of mitochondria mtDNA testing ? connecting the female descendants to a common ancestress :)
A brief summary of how it works ...
the Y-DNA is "only" pass from father to son, generation after generation, so basically follows the surname usually ... i.e. take any male, his male siblings, their father, their father's brothers, their son's, the grandfather, his male siblings and on back through the "direct male" lineage to a common ancestor ... they would all have the same Y-DNA test results :)
now the mtDNA works a little differently ... the mother passes this onto "all" of her children, both males and females, BUT "only" the daughters pass it onto their children :) So using this sort of DNA testing would not necessarily follow a surname on back, as each generation of a "direct female" lineage the surname would usually change with each marriage :)
Ok, so now what I am interested in :) Locating person(s) who would be interested in comparing mtDNA test results to prove a common female ancestress ...
For myself ... we got a bit of a family mystery / rumor that my 2nd great grandmother "might" have been adopted ... Mabel Forrest (PECK) b. 1864/66 [she and/or others had given various locations for her birthplace] in either MA / PA or KY ... her presumed father had an occupation as a travelling salesman ... in the 1870 census of Boston, MA she was listed as age 4 in the household of Levi Peck and Lucy Murdock (WHITCOMB) ... Lucy was b. 1822 in Winchendon, Worchester Co., MA
if there proves to "not" have been an adoption there ... I can go back most likely another six generations to a Ruth (WOOD) Jewett b. 1662 in Rowley, Massachusetts Bay Colony (MBC) ...
Naturally there would be a couple of problems here, (1) Mabel had no sisters (2) Lucy only had one sister, Mary Zibiah who died at the age of 2 :( So going back further, Lucy's mother also named Lucy (MURDOCK) Whitcomb b. 1798 in Winchendon, MA ... and she also only had one sister Mary (MURDOCK) Whitney b. 1811 both were daughters of Zebia (BIXBY) Murdock b. 1770 Winchendon. MBC ...
so I toss this query to the winds ... with hopes it not return void too quickly :)
If you have [or know of someone who has] a documented "direct female" lineage from your mother [or their mother], on back to this Mary (MURDOCK) Whitney b. 1811, daughter of Zebia (BIXBY) Murdock, who was the first wife of Ephram MURDOCK b. 1772 at Winchendon, Worchester Co., MBC ... you are a prime candidate that I am searching for :) This Mary appears to have been married to a Amasa WHITNEY [Jr.] ...
Interested parties can contact me here, or privately at: hdpth [at] earthlink [dot] net ...
Ken -
hdpth-DNA
I have posted this on the Murdock message board to cover my bases. It is actually spelled with a ch. I know William and Isabella were born in Scotland but I don't know where. They had 4 children in Canada named: William Jr., Jennettia (Janet), John, and Frank. William Jr. married Anne Adamson, Janet and John, I believe, died in their early 20's, and Frank married Rose Burd. If you have any information on these people and where they came from in Scotland, please email me or reply. llawrenz@earthlink.net
POW/MIA Korean War, MURDOCK
I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Montgomery County, Indiana as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.
Soldier: JACKIE LEE MURDOCK
Born: Sept 15, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 6, 1950, POW
When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Murdock family is one of those missing.
When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.
I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.
Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I'm trying to find information about the Murdocks in Horry County and possibly Georgetown County. What I have so far is my 3rd great-grandparents were Joseph (1816)& his wife Eliza (1828). They had four children: James S.(1847), John (1852), Catherine D. (1853) and William J. (1858). James was my 2nd great-grandfather. He married Jane (1854) and their children were: Thomas (1874), Alexander (1875), Sarah R. (1878) and Eliza J. (1879). They apparently had more children after Eliza, however, I do not have any names or dates. I would appreciate any help. Please note, all birth dates are approximate.
Thank you,
Jennifer
My ancestor Sarah Murdock (Crill) was born in Pennsylvania in 1819 and died in Ohio in 1897. Her obituary states that she was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. There were three Murdocks in the 1820 Lebanon County census - two named Robert and one named John. One Robert and John each listed a girl under the age of ten in their household. Quite likely one of these households had Sarah in the listing. I am interesting in exchanging information with anyone researching Murdocks in early times in Lebanon County. I can be e-mailed directly at JohnLaird9@aol.com in addition to posting a reply hear. Thank you in advance for any help or advice.
I am still trying my ancestors and descendents of the William Henry Murdock family. William Henry was born about 1824, possibly Vermont or Ohio, not sure. Susannah Hill was born about 1831 in Indiana daughter of John and Catherine Hill. They were married July 3rd, 1848 in Clinton, Iowa. If you have any information that would help me that would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is sh55720@aol.com.
Rodman family monument at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY has Ann Murdock, first wife of John Rodman. No dates are given, but she must have died prior to 1809, since John then married Rhoda Woodruff. John originally from Ireland, lived in NYC, member of Brick Presbyterian Church. He died 1822, Rhoda died 1823. No children of John and Ann buried in family plot, although John and Rhoda's two sons and grandaughter and her husband are there. Anyone have any information on this Ann?
