Classification: Obituary
Surnames: Murnan, Ferguson, Ellis, Livingston
Susan Jane Murnan was born in Indiana Feb. 4, 1844, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Elles, southwest of Lewis, May 19, 1929, aged 85 years, 3 months and 14 days. She was a daughter of John and Sarah Murnan.
At the age of 12 years she moved with her parents to Illinois. On Sept. 1, 1867, she was married to Wm. Ferguson. In 1873 they moved to Cass county, Iowa. Her husband passed away in 1883. Three children were born to this union; Elmer of Letcher, S.D.; Mrs. Cora Elles of Lewis; and Maud Livingston, deceased.
Jane Ferguson was a kindly soul, always willing to lend an assisting hand to those in distress. She was a good neighbor, a faithful and loving wife, an indulgent mother. Until a few years ago when the infirmities of old age began to overtake her, she lived at her home in east Lewis. She then went to live with her daughter, who lovingly cared for her to the end.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Lewis Christian church, of which Mrs. Ferguson was a charter member. Rev. Myers, from the Griswold church, preached the sermon. The body was then laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.

RESIDENT OF Cass NEARLY 50 YEARS DIES AT Griswold
Susan Jane Ferguson, a resident of Cass county for nearly 50 years, passed away Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Ellis, at Griswold, following an illness of two weeks with complications of influenza. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Ferguson was born Feb. 4, 1844 in Indiana, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Murnan. At the age of 12 years she moved with her parents to Illinois and in September, 1886, she was married to William Ferguson, who died forty-five years ago. After their marriage they lived in Illinois seven years and then moved to a farm between Griswold and Lewis, having lived in that vicinity until their respective deaths.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Ferguson moved to Lewis where she made her home until three years ago, when she moved to Griswold and had made her home there since. The deceased is the last of a family of eight children.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bert Ellis, of Griswold, and one son, Elmer Ferguson, of Letcher, S.D. A daughter passed away about a year ago.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
note: The marriage year in the last obituary is an error. Susan and William were married in 1867. Also, the last name of Susan's daughter is Ellis. It was misspelled in the first obit.
I transcribed all the obits as they were written in the various Iowa newpapers they were taken from.
Susan was my gg grandmother. I am researching the Murnan and Ferguson families. I am willing to share any information I have regarding the Murnan/Ferguson families.
