After this thread, I emailed the Campbell County Historical Society to ask about the Murnan graves. I received a very quick response from a volunteer, which I will paste here:

"A couple of our board members are heavy into cemetery research and using a GPS to locate the exact site of the cemetery. According to some recent notes the Murnan Family Cemetery is on the north side of Murnan Road near Radio Towers. The exact position is shown as 39 deg 00.692N 084 deg 26.622W.

I did not see a list of burials in our usual cemetery books but there is a fairly thick Murnan family file that has info on your family. Included in the file was a copy of a 1976 letter by Virginia Ware of Ft. Thomas Kentucky. That 1976 letter states "The property is now owned by one of the radio or TV stations. When the property was purchased they promised not to disturb the burial plot. it is surrounded by a concrete wall... erected in 1928...".

A second note in the family file indicated 4 graves at that location.

John Murnan B. 1757 D 1812. Note - Several pages in the file show the 1812 death date. One family sheet in the file lists his death as 10-12-1812. The confusion may lie in the will which he apparently made out in 1810.

Elizabeth Murnan B 1762 D 1838. The family sheet lists her death as 4-11-1838.

The note goes on to mention "2 small stones thought to be slaves JM and FM"..Somebody apparently added a later note saying "Herb Murnan says foot stonees JM & EM".

The best answer I can give you at this time is I didn't find any indication that the graves have been moved and the recent note makes me suspect they have not been moved."

I hope to inquire again about the contents of the Family File at the Historical Society. I'll update the board if I learn more. I'd sure like to find out where ol' John Murnan was during the Revolution!

Bonnie

Hello Bonnie,
My family and I visited the graves of John and Elizabeth in about 1974. The grave had not been disturbed at that time. We were told at that time by other family members that some of the descendants of John/Elizabeth were buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in the Newport area about 4 or 5 miles north of the Murnan Road. It would seem that if the graves of John/Elizabeth have been moved, the Evergreen Cemetery might be a likely spot.
John Murnan

The last times I visited the cemetery would have been in the early 1970's. The property was owned at the time by Paul Fehr, and later by his daughter Helen Fehr. It was sold to WKRC-TV, probably in the late '80's or early '90's. I believe the television station constructed one of those "Doppler Weather" towers near the spot where the graves were.
I wish I had more accurate information about the time and location of the re-location.

Hi Mike---

You've piqued my interest. I am a descendant of John Murnan and Elizabeth Stephens Murnan, through their daughter Elizabeth who married John Senour/Seniour/Senor.

Can you give me any time window for when the Murnan family cemetery might have been moved? I googled WKRC-TV, and see it was founded in 1949---

I'd like to investigate where my ancestors' remains might have been moved to!

Any estimates appreciated.

Bonnie

The Murnan board has been quite for some time now but seems to take off just where it left off. John Murnan, where was he from and when did he die. In a Bowen history published in 1902, on the Grandson of John, George Murnan, it touches on the life of John Murnan saying that John was a "native of Ireland".
John Murnan's head stone, as I viewed it in the mid 1970's, clearly said "John Murnan, Died, Oct 1812, in the 55th year of his age".
In his will John states " I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth Mernan the plantation I live on for her natural life". Elizabeth lived until 1838, another 26 years. It seems to me a pretty much natural life and death situation for John and Elizabeth.
I too would like to know if and where their graves were moved. I would also like to hear some of the "campfire stories" mentioned. John Murnan, Illinois
I don't know for certain the causes of death, but I can make some suposition based on dates:

I have John Bernard Murnan's first wife Jane Adren as dying about 1794. I also have their last child Sarah (Sally) as being born about 1794, so Jane may have died in childbirth.

John himself died in 1910, at the age of aprox 53 - so he may well have succumbed to an illness of some kind. John's second wife Elizabeth Stephens died in 1838 at the age of 76, so that could well have been of natural causes of old age.

This is the first I've heard of the graves having been moved - anyone know where to?

I grew up on Murnan Road in Cold Spring, Kentucky and, as a child, visited the graves of John Murnan and his family on one of the farms. I believe the property now belongs to WKRC-TV and the graves have been re-located.
Sitting around a campfire, we would fabricate stories of how the family met an untimely death to scare the dickens out of the younger kids on the overnight camp-out. To this day my younger brother and sisters still believe the tales. Just how did John and his family die?
3 obits Susan Jane MURNAN Ferguson 1844-1929

Susan Jane Murnan was born in Indiana Feb. 4, 1844, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Elles, southwest of Lewis, May 19, 1929, aged 85 years, 3 months and 14 days. She was a daughter of John and Sarah Murnan.
At the age of 12 years she moved with her parents to Illinois. On Sept. 1, 1867, she was married to Wm. Ferguson. In 1873 they moved to Cass county, Iowa. Her husband passed away in 1883. Three children were born to this union; Elmer of Letcher, S.D.; Mrs. Cora Elles of Lewis; and Maud Livingston, deceased.
Jane Ferguson was a kindly soul, always willing to lend an assisting hand to those in distress. She was a good neighbor, a faithful and loving wife, an indulgent mother. Until a few years ago when the infirmities of old age began to overtake her, she lived at her home in east Lewis. She then went to live with her daughter, who lovingly cared for her to the end.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Lewis Christian church, of which Mrs. Ferguson was a charter member. Rev. Myers, from the Griswold church, preached the sermon. The body was then laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.

FOR GRISWOLD WOMAN
Funeral services for Susan Jane Ferguson, long time Cass resident who died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Ellis, at Griswold, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Lewis Church of Christ, the Rev. J.G. Myers of Griswold officiating. Burial will be in the Lewis cemetery.

RESIDENT OF CASS NEARLY 50 YEARS DIES AT GRISWOLD
Susan Jane Ferguson, a resident of Cass county for nearly 50 years, passed away Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Ellis, at Griswold, following an illness of two weeks with complications of influenza. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Ferguson was born Feb. 4, 1844 in Indiana, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Murnan. At the age of 12 years she moved with her parents to Illinois and in September, 1886, she was married to William Ferguson, who died forty-five years ago. After their marriage they lived in Illinois seven years and then moved to a farm between Griswold and Lewis, having lived in that vicinity until their respective deaths.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Ferguson moved to Lewis where she made her home until three years ago, when she moved to Griswold and had made her home there since. The deceased is the last of a family of eight children.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bert Ellis, of Griswold, and one son, Elmer Ferguson, of Letcher, S.D. A daughter passed away about a year ago.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

note: The marriage year in the last obituary is an error. Susan and William were married in 1867. Also, the last name of Susan's daughter is Ellis. It was misspelled in the first obit.
I transcribed all the obits as they were written in the various Iowa newpapers they were taken from.
Susan was my gg grandmother. I am researching the Murnan and Ferguson families. I am willing to share any information I have regarding the Murnan/Ferguson families.

In reply to questions of the two Agnes Murnan's of IN and IA: I have a Agnes Murnan, who I believe was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Murnan Murnan and grand daughter of Michael and Jane Simpson Murnan of IN., who was born abt. 1836 and died abt. 1915, who apparently married a John Gambrel in 1854. This John was born abt. 1834 and died abt. 1915 and I believe are both buried in IN.
The Agnes Murnan Robb that I have that is buried in IA., was the daughter of John and Sarah Newland Murnan. These two women were related. If this sounds close, let me know and I'll try to explain the relationship between these two Agnes'.

John Murnan
Illinois

Grace Merlin MURNAN, d/o Charles W. MURNAN and Cora MORGAN

Hi Todd,
This is what I have. We visited cemeteries
on our last trip to Indy. This is what my
husbands father told us:
Grace Merlin Murnan Schaekel, was born in
1897, she died in 1982. Her father's name was
Charles W. Murnan, born 1873 and died in
1930. He was married to Cora Morgan Murnan,
born April 1, 1877, died Dec. 23, 1901. We
think he may have had a brother, Michael,
born 1864, died 1898. He was married to
Margaret Murnan, born 1869, died 1949. Also,
we think, there was another brother, John F.,
born 1871, died, 1899. Charles W. married
again on, April 17, 1904 to Edith M. Smith,
born 1882, and died 1965, she had twin
brothers and owned her own house in
Greenfield. We also believe my husband's
grandmother, had twin brothers, Fred, born
1892, died 1964, and Edward, born 1892, died
1971. We visited two cemeteries, London
Cemetery, London, Indiana, and The New Bethel
Cemetery, in Wanamaker. Both of these are
pretty old. I hope this wasn't confusing and
it helps you. My husband's father is digging
to find more information. Anything we find,
I'll send to you. You can e-mail us at:
schaekel@premaonline.com Thank-you for your
reply, Kathryn

Hi Kathryn. I am sure that our Murnan's are related somehow. Mine is Agnes Murnan, she was my ggg grandmother. She was born in 1837 and died in 1910. I have no information on her parents or any siblings, but she lived and died in Hancock Co., IN, in which Acton is either a part of or is real close to. I am searching diligently for any info, and if I find anything, i will let you know. I hope you do the same. Agnes is probably an aunt or something of the like to your grandmother

Grace Merlin MURNAN m. Herman William SCHAEKEL 1920

My husband and I are researching his family genealogy.
This is what we know so far.His grandmother's name was
Grace Merlin Murnan. She was born in 1897, and died in
1992. She married Herman William Schaekel on March 3, 1920.
Grace's parents, were, Charles W. Murnan, born 1873, died 1930,
and Cora M. Murnan, born 1877, and died 1901.
We think Charles's mother and father were Margaret Murnan, born 1869,
and died 1949, and Michael Murnan, born 1864, died 1898. Charles had twin
brothers, Fred, born 1892, died 1964, and Edward, born 1892, died 1971.
All of this part of the family lived in Acton and Wanamaker, Indiana.
We've visited cemeteries and have taken pictures of monuments to make sure the
dates are accurate. Any information would be greatly appreciated. We are at a
dead end with this. My husbands grandmother was one of nicest people I've ever met.
We never thought to ask her questions on genealogy, before she died.
Thank-you, Kathryn

I have just begun my search. My grandfather died before I was born in 1955, so I don't know too much. We are from Kansas City, MO. My father is Jack G Murnan, he has no siblings. His father was Robert James Murnan, he was married to Helen Murnan (Brotherson). I believe may ggrandfather was Jesse Murnan and his wife was Minnie. I was told that one or both came from outside of Berlin and could barely speak English. If there is anyone out there who may know of any Murnan's either in the KC area or from Germany please let me know.

Agness MURNAN - John GAMBREL Brandywine Twp, Hancock Co., IN 1860

I believe the Elizabeth you have here in Brandywine Township of Hancock County is the daughter of William Murnan and Agness Cones. She was born in 1817 in Kentucky and married her first cousin John Murnan, son of Michael Murnan and Jane
Simpson. In the 1850 Census of Brandywine Twp., she was 32 years old, a widow, and taking care of her 64 year old father William. Elizabeth Murnan and John Murnan had 6 children: Jane born 1835, Agness born 1836, Michael born 1839, William born 1843, James born 1845 and David born 1848. This matches your ages pretty closely for William 18, James 15 and Daniel 12 in the 1860 Census. The Agness next door is probably daughter Agness born in 1836.

Charles Williard Murnan born October 11, 1873 in Greenfield,
Hancock County, Indiana was first married to Cora Morgan, then Edith Smith daughter of James Smith and Eliza Dake and a twin to brother Ezra Smith. Charles W. Murnan's parents are Jacob Murnan and Matilda Ferris. They had 10 children of which Charles W. was the last in 1873. I show them with no Michael Murnan. In 1864 I have Rodney F. Murnan being born and a month later dieing. John P. Murnan was born in 1871 before Charles W. Apparently George W. and Cora Elizabeth were twins born in 1866. They would be a brother and sister to Charles W. Jacob Murnan, besides Matilda Ferris, was also married to Laurinda Chambers (who I accidently found buried in Sullivan County, Indiana). His parents were James Murnan and Elizabeth Stephens. James Murnan had brothers Michael, Jacob, John, William, George, and Charles. The sisters were Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth. These 10 children's father is John Murnan or Jean Bernard Bourg Gauthier De Murnan buried in Cold Spring, Campbell County, Kentucky. This Sunday July 29th I will be at the home of one of Charles W. Murnan and Edith Smith's children for their 77th Murnan reunion. Charles W. Murnan and Cora Morgan had two children --- Grace M. born July 1, 1897 and Chloe V. born March 25, 1899

Re: Agnes Murnan m. John Gambrel

Yes John Murnan who married Elizabeth Murnan, they were first cousins. John is the son of Michael Murnan who's brother William Murnan is the father of Elizabeth Murnan. Michael and wife Jane Simpson are buried in an almost non-existent cemetery in Shelby County, Moral Township, Indiana, William Murnan and wife Agness Cones are buried about 2 miles north across the county line at the New Palestine Cemetery in Hancock County, Sugar Creek Township. Another brother to Michael and William Murnan is George W. Murnan and he married Jane McCullough Cones that just happenes to be a sister of Agness Cones. To go another step, another brother to Michael, William and George is Jacob Murnan who married Sarah Weston (my g-g-g-grandparents also buried at the New Palestine Cemetery) Their first child Elizabeth Murnan married Washington Cones who was a nephew of Agness and Jane Cones. The Cones, Murnans and several other families were in Kentucky together before relocating to Indiana. Michael and Jacob Murnan were in Franklin County, Indiana possibly before 1815-- later moving a couple of counties west to Hancock and Shelby-- very possibly because the Indians were not such a threat.

Mary G.Murnan is a daughter of my g-g-g-grandparents Jacob Murnan and Sarah Weston. She was born in Hancock County, Indiana on July 28, 1822 --- her husband Jerome Bonaparte Snodgrass was born January 31, 1825 in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky. The Snodgrass and Murnan names can be found married more than once together. Both families were in Kentucky and moved up especially into Hancock and Shelby County, Indiana. Several Snodgrass also located in Greene County, Indiana. Jerome and Mary moved to Texas and did their share to later populate Texas and Arizona. She died December 31,1875 in Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas and he died November 18, 1878 in Kerr County, Texas --- another source says he died in 1874, buried in the Hunt or Eller Cemetery.
They had eight children of which six were born in Indiana and the last two were born in Iowa. Jacob Murnan and
wife Sarah Weston are buried on what was originally their homestead -- now the old section of the New Palestine Cemetery in New Palestine, Sugar Creek Township, Hancock County, Indiana

We have brothers marrying sisters (not of each other of course). Names seem to melt together with cousins having similar names.
Agness MURNAN - John GAMBREL Brandywine Twp, Hancock Co., IN 1860

Hi Todd,
I found John and Agness living next door to Elizabeth Murnan age 4(2) Kentucky in the 1860 Hancock County Brandywine Twp Indiana Cenus. Children were William 18, James 15, and Daniel 12, I thought I saw an earlier Tax List from Hancock Co listing a John Murnan. This could be Elizabeth's husband.

Phil

Murnan Land Patents - Counties of Rush, Shelby and Hancock, IN

Here are a few dates for Land Patents issued to Murnan family members. There are more, but these represent the earliest date for each individual for a given County.

Rush County
John Murnan of Franklin County Indiana - 1822
William Murnan of Franklin County Indiana - 1822
Charles Murnan of Campbell County Kentucky - 1823

Shelby County
James Murnan of Rush County Indiana - 1828
Michael Murnan of Franklin County Indiana - 1831
George Murnan of Rush County Indiana - 1834
Charles Murnan of Campbell County Kentucky - 1834 (with John Ware)

Hancock County
Jacob Murnan of Franklin County Indiana - 1824
Michael Murnan of Franklin County Indiana - 1826
William Murnan of Shelby County Indiana - 1826

Note: most of the land in Shelby county was in the NW corner of the County, while most of the land in Hancock County was in the SW corner of that county. These parcels of land were therefore only a few miles apart.

Land patents can be found at www.glorecords.blm.gov/

Alan, Thanks very much for the information. I have come across some Snodgrass information since I started my search but not much on the Murnan side of things. I don't have my info in front of me right now, but Jerome and Mary would have been my ggg grandparents on my mothers mothers side. My great grandmother being Lora Indiana Snodgrass. I will add the information you gave me to my files. Are you in touch with David Snodgrass? He has extensive info on the Snodgrass side of things if you happen to be looking for further informatoin on them. You can email me direct at im_sassafras@hotmail.com.
Thanks again,
Susan
