Murnane-Riordan Ballyryan Ballyvorneen

Hello. I am looking for information on my great grandmother Catherine Murnane. She was from Ballyryan, Tipperary, Ireland. She married my great grandfather James Riordan of Ballyvorneen, Caherconlish, Limerick, Ireland sometime around 1880. They had 9 children: Eileen, James, Johanna, Kathleen, Daniel, Patrick Valentine, (my grandfather and yes he was born on 14 Feb 1888), John (aka Jack), Bridget, and Thomas. Some Riordan descendants still live at Ballvorneen, but I know very little about Catherine Murnane and Ballyryan. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

I have learned a lot more about my grandfather, Eugene Murnane's family following the release of the 1911 census. My surviving aunt and uncle have confirmed that this Eugene Murnane was their father. His parents names were Daniel and Ellen Murnane. They lived in House No. 6, Letterlicky East. His siblings were:-

Nora, Tim, Mary, Dan, Pat, Ellie and Kattie.

I have checked on the link that you provided me with when I last left a message and as far as I can tell, they do not seem to match although it may be that more research is required before discovering a match.

Thank you very much for responding and for the information concening the Irish Census. That will assist enormously with moving forward (or backwards, depending on your point of view).

Contacting the Parish Priest at the local church sounds like a good idea, I will try to do that over the next few weeks. I will also take advantage of looking at the information you indicated to on Rootsweb.

I was only able to research through about 1880, so I do not know anything about your grandfather.

My parents visited Letterlicky about 10 years ago and had a great time. You could write to the parish priest there. For a small doantaion he will probably be willing to lookup your grandfather in their records. Eugene was a popular Murnane name, but you should be able to figure out which one he was if there was more than one born about the same time.

Once you find Eugene's father's name, I should be able to tell you more about the family. Ireland and Canada are working on a joint project to make the Irish 1901 census available, sometime next year. You should be able to confirm his parents from that census as well.

You can see my Murnane family tree by searching for Eugene Murnane at Rootsweb.com in the World Coneect Proejct. I think all the Eugene Murnaes currently listed are part of my tree. You could select anyone of them and the browse around.

Mike Morrissey

I was interested in your entry concerning Murnane's from around Bantry.

My grandfather, Eugene Murnane, born around 1893 came from Letterlicky (a place I had never heard of until a couple of weeks ago). Eugene married Mary O'Sullivan around 1921. They had 4 children, Ellen, Bridget, Donald and Denis born in Moulavanig, Kealkil, Bantry, Co. Cork. Bridget (known as Bridie) was my mother.

I am only really starting out researching the family tree, and I realise that my relatives are a couple of generations later than those that you have found but I wondered if you had encountered any of these names amongst those that you have been researching.

Hi, Maria:

Thanks so much for repsonding. My gggrandmother Bridget Murnighan (also spelled Monaghan) married James Johnston, I suspect around 1840 (my ggrandmother was born around 1843 and the youngest child that I know of was born in 1858). James operated a mill in Raferagh, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, and his brothers were millers, too. I've been to the old mill and the grave of Bridget and James, would love to learn more about them.

Diane
Hi Diane,
Have you been able to find any info regarding Bridget Murnighan? The names Murnahan, Murnaghan and Murnighan are all closely linked and even members of the same family often spelt them differently. I'm from Co. Louth in Ireland and my mother is Murnaghan. I'm currently doing some research into my family history. Our name is spelt in all the three ways I've mentioned above on various historical records, but now we only use the Murnaghan spelling. I've come across quite a few Brdiegts in our family and it's a name that's passed on down through the generations. I have an ancestor called Bridget who is recorded as living in Co. Louth in 1851 and then emigrates to the US shortly afterwards. How were you able to trace your Bridget to Monaghan? Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Maria

John Murnane m. Annie Hart 1880 Chicago, children Annie, Katie, John and Peter.

I've been trying to track my gg grandparents as Murnanes but I think their name may have originally been Moran. I know from my grandfather's death certificate that his mother was Annie Hart. From the census I learned they were in Chicago since 1872. I could not find any Murnanes but I did find a John Moran who married an Annie Hart the correct year and also found John Moran living with his brother James Moran in the 1880 census just before they married. By the 1900 census they had morphed into Murnane. Does anyone know anything about this family?

I have just discovered another picture that was taken in St. Louis, MO. at the Studio Genelli, Hulbert Bros. Priprietors, 923 Olive Street. I believe it is called a cabinet photo. It is about the size of a large post card and is on heavy cardstock. It was found amid what I think were MURNANE photos. It is hard to tell as I have a mixture of so many (5) different estates within my mother's things. However, the woman in the picture reminds me very much of my great aunt Ann MURNANE.

Handwritten on the back is the name
Mr. Philip GREEN
#5 St. P.
8 M M W

Is there anyone out there researching MURNANEs in MO?

I know there were some as I just found a Sister Mary MURNANE at the Good Shepherd Convent in 1880 in St. Paul, MN who was born in MO.

Annie in Minnesota

Hcounter@aol.com

Thanks for answering my post. I came up with that same Annie Hart through the FHC. I agree that this is probably the correct person but I'm having trouble with John Murnane (Moran). I find a John Moran the correct age living with his brother James Moran but our family has always gone by Murnane. I too find it odd that they would change the name. I tried to find baptismal records in All Saints, Nativity of Our Lord and St. Bridget but couldn't locate them. They lived in Bridgeport, at 3719 S. Morgan, any other churches you could recommend? I guess it's possible they weren't catholic. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a Catherine Murnane/Murnan/Murran married to one John Gaynor/Gainor, living in Newport, Tipperary, Ireland at least from 1867 till 1875 when the following births are recorded in the Civil Registration:

Margaret Gaynor b 7 Sep 1867 (parents Gaynor/Murnane)
James Gaynor b 1 Mar 1870 (Gaynor/Murnane)
Thomas Gainor b 27 Jun 1872 (Gainor/Murran)
Martin Gainor b 1 Feb 1875 (Gainor/Murnan)

James came to the US in 1900 aboard the Germanic (Ellis Island Records) where he went to live with a Burke Family on Old Ocean Ave. In Brooklyn. (1900 U.S. Census)

The 1910 Census has James Gaynor living on Chestnut Ave. in Brooklyn with his cousin Bridget Burke-Cassell who was also born in Newport Tipperary on 13 Sep 1869 to John Bourke and Mary Fitzgerald .

James Gaynor came over with John Bourke who was born in Newport, Tipp to John Bourke and Margaret Gaynon on 16 July 1871. John also went to live on Old Ocean Ave with the Burke Family. Other Children born to John Bourke and Margaret Gaynor/Gaynon in Newport, Tipp are:

Margaret Bourke b 10 Feb 1869 (parents Bourke/Gaynor)
Martin Bourke b 10 Dec 1873 (parents Bourke/Gaynor)

It appears that this Margaret Bourke is the wife of the Burke family on Old Ocean Ave. in the 1900 census.

I am trying to clarify the relationship between the Murnane's, Gaynors/ and Burkes. If I can do so it will take me back at least two more generations in Ireland. If anyone has or comes across information that ties into this, please pass it along.

Regards,

Jim

Julius Nissen is in my family, I think. I have little information about him following his birth about 1865 to Erik Nissen and Henriette Folver. He was born in Denmark. The family went for a time to Sweden. But returned to Denmark only to immediately immigrate to USA. This was about October 1882. Julius would have been about 17. They first went to Wetmore, KS, where relatives lived. Then Eric took the family to Oklahoma for the land rush. I don't know whether Julius was with them then, or already out on his own.
Any information about Julius and his family would be appreciated. I'll be happy to share his Danish roots that go back to 1660 in Denmark.
Regards, Ed Nissen, edjeanne@mlode.com

Murnane Cork, NH, Massachusetts (also Donovan, Kingston, Spillane)

I am interested in the John Murnane-Annie Kingston family. John and Annie married in 1895, Annie coming from Somersworth, NH, to Boston. Apparently John was the son of Daniel Murnane and Ellen Barry. Annie came from the Bantry area or parish of Caheragh in West Cork. I am not sure about John. John and Ellen moved from Boston to Charlestown to Somerville, MA. Their children that I know of were James J. (1899-1946) who married Margaret Shea, and Daniel (1903-1974) who married Lillian Rumney. I am interested in this family because of the tie-ins to Kingstons and Spillanes. I am interested in those families if they came from the parish of Caheragh, particularly townlands around Kealanine, in West Cork.
One of the Kingstons married a Daly, that family moving to Andover, MA. In the 1900 census there were four boarders in the Patrick Donovan (mother Ellen Murnane)/Winifred Cassells family: Paul Kingston, 26; Daniel Murnane, 29; Patrick Murnane, 23; and Dennis Murnane, 27. I am wondering what became of this Paul Kingston. I wonder if there was any connection between the Dalys, Kingstons, and Murnanes. Also, there were two Donovans who served as baptismal sponsors in Ireland for my Mahonys.
Jan Kenney Fortado janfortado@comcast.net
It is possible that the above family is somehow connected to my Kingston family so I am interested in locating any descendants who might have early family information. Patrick Donovan, 32, of Andover, MA, son of Daniel Donovan and Ellen Murnane, married Winnifred Cassells, 24, daughter of Peter Cassels and Mary McLaughlin, of Plaistow, NH, on January 10, 1885 in the Exeter, NH, Catholic church. In a later census, there were Murnanes and a Kingston living with Patrick and Winnifred.

Hugh Murnane & Elizabeth Ahearn were my g-g-g-grandparents. Hugh died in Bridgeport at the young age of 35, Nov. 16, 1873. Elizabeth died Aug. 25, 1917. Their daughter Mary married Thomas Bolger. I know their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1865, but I never knew she married a Hamill. Your grandparents must be Margaret Murnane and Charles Kelly. I'm Deb Kearns, g-g-grandaughter of James Kearns and Catherine Murnane and the g-g-g grandaughter of Hugh Kearns & Bridget Leddy.

I've seen the 1872 birth certificate your referring to. It's for 'Female' Murnane, showing father Hugh Murnane age 40 and mother Eliza Heanley age 36. The child's name was actually Sarah Murnane. She was the 8th child and died in Bridgeport June 4, 1874. Heanley is just one of those inexplicable errors that often pop up in searching hand written records. I'm sure Ahern/Ahearn is the correct surname based on 2 sources: Death cert. of Elizabeth Murnane shows father as Patrick Ahern (mother ? blank) and the death cert. of Catherine Murnane Kearns shows mother as Elizabeth Ahearn and father Hugh Murnane.

Timothy Murnane of Letterlicky, Durrus, Co. Cork early 1800s

I am researching the family of Timothy Murnane and Margaret Cassidy. They lived in Letterlicky, in the Catholic parish of Durrus (aka Muintervara), civil parish of Bantry (aka Kilmoconge). They had at least 2 children, Dennis, born in 1806, and Michael, born in 1815. Dennis emigrated to the US in the early 1830s. Michael emigrated to the US in the late 1840s. It is likely that they had other children, including John, Eugene, Honora and Timothy.

I have transcribed over 130 baptisms and 20 marriages from the parish records of Durrus, mostly of Murnanes. I have also transcribed some of the Murnane records from the parish of Bantry and a few of the parish of Caheragh.

I have also transcribed all of the Murnanes and variations that I could find in the 1850 US census.

I am interested in exchanging with anyone else researching Murnanes from the area around Bantry.

Mike Morrissey
I'm the greatgranddaugther of Charles and Margaret. I grew up in Bridgeport and now live in Fla. I have a copy of the 1870's census, it lists Hugh's wife as Eliza and the other children:Mary 10, Catherine 9, Lizzie 5, Patrick. I have have a birth certiticate from 1872 the year Margaret was born, it lists Hugh as father and Eliza Heanley as mother showing she had other children. My question to you is where do you get the imformation on his wife as Elizabeth Ahearn? Also the letter I got over 25 years ago was from Katherine Landry who stated her mother was Catherine Kearns, your relationship, everything she told me about the other relatives matches. I started tracing my family history when I was in my 20's and alot of relatives where still alive and that was 30 years ago. If you can send me what you have maybe we can complete our history on the Murnane side. Thanks, Pam

He had a brother, Hugh, & Ann Golden rings a bell. Are you in St. Paul? Photos sound interesting.
Ann

I saw all my uncles and father's name listed and knew it had to be you. I keep running into information on your father but nothing on grandpa. Have you had any luck finding anyone else?
