African American Murrells - Virginia

Am searching for father's ancestors. They lived in and around smythe county, VA. My father's name was edward murrell. He was born in 1923 and served in WWII. My grandfather is James Murrell who was married to rosa lee (Phipps). Died in washington, DC around 1962.I am unable to locate where my grandfather was born or his parents. James had relatives in the cumberland plateau of tennessee. He had brothers, richard, samuel and nathaniel who live(d) in Georgia, around Athens. Any info you can provide would be helpful. There is also a possibility that family originated somewhere louisiana. Please email me at tbop89@aol.com if there is a connection.

Through a great deal of generous help from someone else, I have linked my Murrell family back to Oakley, Suffolk, England:
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&rls=en-us&...

(for some reason this now lists as Norfolk, the last time I looked on google maps, it listed Suffolk, but this is the correct place on the map, as one of the Murrells married someone from Hoxne, which is right next door).

Anyway, this same generous person sent me a copy of the first time the name was found to be recorded in that area. It was a baptistry record in the 1500's. You have to remember that last names were not always there and evolved. The spelling I believe was Myrell or some variation of that, I don't have time to look it up right now. That was most likely an oral interpretation of what the person doing the recording heard the name to be.

My line descends from Jeffrey Murrell and follows through to William in Jamestown, VA, a shortly after it's founding. The descendants worked their way across the US, ending up in NW Louisiana (John). His family were the first European settler in that area.

The name in the US is also pronounced differently. Our side pronounces it to rhyme with pearl, whereas the MO branch usually rhymes with seashell.

I'm sure someone else can do a better job of this than I can, but I hope this helps.

Just a side note, a great deal of names were changed by what the first inscriber has heard if the person having the name could not write it down themselves. Handwriting also played a part, and then typos. Now that we have the computer age, that has also altered names, especially longer ones or those with spaces in them. The format of my last name has changed in California, as the DMV computer system was not set up to accept a space in a last name. Kind of ironic, in a a state that has Silicon Valley, and many last names with not only one space but two (ie. De La Cruz).

Anyway,

I studied with a wonderful teacher named Gwendolyn Murrell-Wright in Toronto, Canada in 1968-69. She was the daughter of John Ernest Murrell-Wright, who was born in Leeds, England and immigrated to Canada in 1895, where he graduated from Trinity College in 1898 and entered the Anglican ministry in 1901. He died February 3, 1931 in Toronto. There were four children: Gwendolyn, Arthur S., Gilbert O. and Helen. It is a measure of how much I respected Gwendolyn Murrell-Wright that I went surfing for information and then took the time to consult the Toronto Star for information about the family.

Good luck.

The last census I show him on is 1910 in Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee. I am the great granddaughter of his brother, Edwin Ruthven Murrell. I show that he died in September 1925, but I don't know where. I have a son Hugh, a daughter Pauline, and possibly one more child who died before 1910.

I will be glad to send you all I have on this family.
Bettie Murrell Tripp Waddle

Thanks. Email me at astounding24@hotmail.com with any information, just put Murrell in the subject line so I know it's not junk mail.

Mark Murrell born 1844 Pilt Down Sussex

I have run aground in my research for the the above Mark Murrell, His marriage cert says he married Mary Ann Corderoy on 25th December 1866 in Lewisham and his father was also Mark Murrell, I cant find a trace of either Mark Murrells any where prior to an 1881 Census for Mark and Mary and their family in Greenwhich. This clearly says Mark was born in 'Pill Down Sussex' which is a spelling error meaning Piltdown. I am a little baffled as to why neither of them show on any census prior or BMD records to 1881. Consequently I dont know of any of his siblings. Alan

I have LDS records recording the birth of William being christened in 1613. Also records of marriage between Anne Coo and William. William's father was Richard b 1 Apr 1567 in Oakley, Suffolk, Eng. Richard's father was Jeffrey, b 1525, Oakley, d 1575, Oakley. Jeffrey's wife was Joan Taylor, b 1528, Hoxne, Suffolk, Eng, d aft 1586. If you need more, email me at samcathy@suddenlink.net and I will copy Suffolk, Eng records.
My mother was a Murrel, Bertha Lee. Her father was James
Whitfield (1884-1933). His father was William L, born
about 1858, died ?. His wife was Anna L. Cook. As far as
I can tell, these Murrells started in S. C., moved to Ala.
Miss. and Texas. James and Anna's first two or three
children were born in Miss, about 1878-1883. I have submitted a DNA sample to the Morman Church Genealogy. It
was several years ago. I think this line of the Murrell
family is not directly related to the Murrells in Cooke
County, Texas, nor the Murrells in Okla, nor anyone else.
Let me know what you find.
Hi,

I just saw your posting on here. I am interested in Nichola Murrell, b. 1814 in Adair Co. I found one thing that said he was the son of John and Mary (Lobban) Murrell. I also found him in the 1840 and 1850 census. It lists his wife as Catherine Ann (or "Kitty"). I know this was Kitty Selby but I cannot find their marriage nor how and when he died or they divorced. She was alone with her children and brother in 1860 census. No trace of Nicholas. Their youngest daughter was b. abt. 1855. That's all I know. Can you help with anything else, or verify his parents?
Jan

Talk to the surviving family members, get death certificates-it names parents and funeral homes who do have the lists of who payed for buriel and graveyard-buriel plots. Look up cemeteries and look at gravestones this gives birthdates and death dates and families are usually buried together in plots next to each others. try those things and just perserver through it.

well start with your parents then go backwards to grandparents etc and try aunts and uncles. I made a list of my parents there parents and also the siblings of my parents and grandparents. Go as far back as posible. Then list birthdates and death dates.Do not worry if you do not have all the info , then go to censes lists and start trying the names and the locations of were your family lived. I found my grandfather on my fathers side at Find -a-grave.com with only his first and last name then I found the rest of the family that had passed away and I got there birthdates and death dates and was able to find them on the censes lists. You also can use the message boards to locate family that is doing the same research or someone who mught know that particular family. I did not know my grandmothers parents names and my mom could not remember so I went and paid for a geanological death certificate and found there names and my grandfather was listed on it so I knew it was her. My family is a Murrell family.

Death of John Murrell

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 18 March 1892 ...

On Thursday night of last week Mrs. O. B. Colquitt received a telegram saying that her brother, John Murrell, had been killed that day and asking her to go to Minden, Louisiana at once. Mr. Murrell was killed at Coushatta, Louisiana, by a man named J. Bryant Smith who had been living on Murrell's plantation. Murrell having advanced him supplies and money Smith disputed the account and moved off without settling. Murrell has some of his property attached and the attachment suit had been on trial Thursday morning. After dinner John Warren, a brother-in-law of Murrell, went out of the hotel to pay for some purchase made the day previous. He was accosted by Smith about some testimony he had given during the trial. A quarrel ensued. At this juncture Murrell, in company with the district judge and district attorney, came out of the hotel and arriving near where the two were quarreling, remarked to his companions that "he wanted to stop that fuss, that he did not want any difficulty there." He had hardly said that when Smith drew his pistol on Warren and Murrell asked him not to shoot. Smith fired at Warren, wounding him slightly, and Murrell fired on Smith, he and Smith firing simultaneously. Smith shot Murrell three times, two balls taking effect in the breast and one in the mouth killing him instantly. The killing was done in the presence of the district attorney. Smith was lodged in jail. The tragedy has cast a gloom over several homes. Murrell leaves a wife and three little children.
