I have a distant ancestor William Mycock, born Leeds c1866,died South Africa 1901.He enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment in Jan 1882.While stationed at Sheffield barracks in 1889 he married Cecilia Dyer and they had a daughter,Frances Margaret Studley Mycock, born 1890.William was posted to South Africa in 1891,and Cecilia was with him.(A possible second daughter,Annie, was born in 1891).William was discharged from the military in Jan.1894,intending to live at Bulawayo. However,by beginning of 1895,William was back in England, having stowed away on a ship from Capetown,(for which he received 3 months hard labour).William re-enlisted in Coldstream Guards in Aug.1895 and declared no previous army service, and claimed to be unmarried. He bought himself out in 1897,but in 1900 he enlisted again in the Glamorgan Imperial Yeomanry, and was immediately posted again to South Africa,William died in hospital in Bloemfontein in Apr.1901.
Any information please about what happened to Cecilia.Did she die in 1894? or did William simply desert her? Did she,or her family, survive? David Windle
