We have nothing on Samuel's background. There is a book written by Raymond Elliott (son of Annie Myres Elliott) about his life and he details some of David and Mary Jane Myres' lives. However, much of the information he gives has been found to be incorrect. I have a pretty well documented family tree if you would like it. Give me your address and I will make copies for you with the documentation I have found. I have some pictures of David and Mary Jane also. I am also reading a book just published about Granbury's Brigade; the brigade that David fought with during the Civil War. He is mentioned in it.

Thank you Nora...Do you have info on Sam's (David's dad) parents? Or where I can look for it? I have heard (or, actually seen in posts) that there is a Myres Family Book. I have not seen it, but it seems like I remember my grandfather talking about it.

Justin....Sam Myres died in 1841 and is buried in Washington Co. Mary Ann remarried Issac Kelley and they had 5 more children. David Myres is the one who ended up in Georges Creek, but so did Mary Ann, and three of the Kelley children.David came to Texas around 1860, was in the Civil War and then married Mary Jane in Brenham in 1866. They owned property there and then moved to Georges Creek in 1870. Mary Ann Myres/Kelley is in the 1880 census in the Georges Creek/Ft. Spunky area. Two of the Kelley sons are buried across the lane from David and Mary Jane Myres in Georges Creek. I think Mary Ann probably is too, but stone is gone and some of the cemetary records for the late 1880's are gone.

Samuel Myres b. 1803 Washington County, PA

Hi all,
I have been researching my family line, and have hit a brick wall. I have traced my history to Samuel Myres, married to Mary Stapleton (or Steepleton, depends on the website). He was born in 1803. I am curious if any of you might know who his mother and father were. Thanks!

Hi Nora,
From everything I can find, Samuel Myres went to West Virginia, while Mary Ann and family went to Georges Creek, TX. I (probably like yourself) am a direct descendant of Samuel. Hubert Myres was my great grandfather.

Mires/Myres/Myers Family - Surry/Yadkin Counties NC 1800-1880

I'm working on the family history of a friend and have hit an interesting wall.

His Grt Grt Grandmother was a woman named Zelpha Sylvania MIRES/MYRES/MYERS born @ 1877 and was still alive in 1930. She married Tom/Thomas MC BRIDE about 1895 in Surry County, NC.

She was the daughter of Martha MYRES/MIRES as attested by her death certificate and the 1880 Census. That Census shows her living with her mother and her mother's family as follows:

Liberty, Yadkin County, NC

Mires, Jacob 76 years old, born NC, Mulatto, farmer
Mires, Nancy 66, NC, Mulatto, wife
Caroline 51, NC, Mulatto, Daughter, Washer Woman
Rosa 51, NC, Mulatto, Daughter, At Home
George 30, NC, Mulatto, Son, Farm Laborer
Martha 24, NC, Mulatto, Daughter, At Home
Alexander 13, NC, Mulatto, Grandson, Day Laborer
Zilpha 3, NC, Mulatto, Granddaughter, At Home

The family, which is huge as Jacob and Nancy apparently had 18 children, is in the same place 1870, 1860, 1850. Liberty is not a town so far as I can find, but a Township near Yadkinville.

The list of children, born between the years 1834 & 1859, so far as I can determine is: Mary, Polly/Poline, Caroline, Rosa/Rosanah, Lydiah/Lida, Jerry, Sam/Samuel, Jones, Nancy, William, Lucy, Isey/Isabel, George, Anna, Marhta, Jane, Peter, Nannie (Nannie may be a granddaughter raised as a daughter)

Grandchildren who retained the Myres/Mires/Myers name I've found are: of Mary - Greenberry 1863 & Melvina 1866; of Rose - Alexander 1865; of Lida - Nancy 1862, Elizabeth 1865, Caroles (son) 1888; of Lucy - Manda 1864 & Lee G. 1869; of Polina - John 1865, Mary 1888;

Zelpha is listed as Mulatto as a child but as an adult married woman listed as White.

None of the grandchildren or children are ever shown to be attending school and all adults from 1880 back are illiterate.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, I welcome the chance to learn and to share what I've found.

Have you come across an Archibald Meyre, Meyers, Myre born 1811? We believe that the family may have originally come from Heligoland or Jutland. Archibald was born in Scotland but married in England. Unable to find any other members of family and unable to trace his death but I believe this may have been in England.

My maiden name is Myers and I have always seen my Great-great Granfather's name as George W. Myers b 1818 Pa. d. 1873 in Va. I have not been able to local his parents or siblings. It occurred to me that Myers is sometimes misspelled Myres, and I have seen his spelling that way, sometimes in documents that spell it both ways in the same document.

Perhaps the surname was Myres at first?

They lived in Sullivan County, Pa. near Shrewsbury and Plunketts Creek which was later renamed Hillsgrove. Related families are Corson (Coursen) and Fiester (Feaster)

I am wondering about how Joseph Wesley Myres might be connected?

Do we have a connection? I have a pictures of some of these Myres.

My Samuel was born about 11 March 1789 and died Apr 22 1852. His son Joseph was born in the 1820's in Stuben, Oneida and they moved to Orwell, N.Y. I found this information by sending for the death certificate of Joseph. If you know Samuel's death date and city and county where he was living you could send for his death certificate. Your Samuel could be a son of mine....who knows. My family changed the spelling of their name later to Myers and I have seen it spelled Meyers.
