MACCHIONE, Giovanni Amedeo - Passed away peacefully at the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on Friday, March 30, 2007; in his 95th year. Beloved husband of Rosina Macchione (nee: Naccarato). Loving father of Maria Gagliardi (Attilio), Angela Bassoriello (Nicola), Franca Ivana Macchione and Giacomo Macchione. Loving grandfather of Fran Kruse (Mark), Franco Giuliano Bassoriello, Rosanna Fernandes (Glenn), Dr. Anna Rosa Gagliardi-Powell (Stefan) and Maria Lorenzia Marchiori (David). Loving great-grandfather of Andrew Mogan, Alisha Fernandes, Sarah Mogan and Luisa Marchiori. Brother of Anna Costanzo (nee: Macchione) and 14 siblings (all predeceased). Victor died unexpectedly, but peacefully, on Nov. 12, 2006.

He was born in Spokane on Dec. 7, 1931, to Victor A. and Margaret Warner Naccarato. Vic led a full life with many friends. He was involved in the construction of many of the earlier cable TV systems from Alaska to Ohio. One of the highlights of his life was being co-owner of Slew of Damascus, National Thoroughbred Claimer of the Year 1993.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Delores Scheib Naccarato, daughter Debra (Lee) Koehler, son Richard (Tami) Naccarato, four grandchildren, Amber, Brandi, Kenneth Koehler, and Krystin Naccarato, sisters Dorothy Ellis, Norma (Jim) Behris, brothers Nick Staccato and John (Mary Ann) Naccarato, sisters-in-law Gerry Scheib , Wilma (Bud) Shivierge, Betty (Dale) Catloco, and brother-in-law Ed (Darnell) Zundel, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Arrangements are under the care of Kayser Chapel and Crematory. At the family's request a private gathering will be held at a later date.

Both names, Naccarato and Bossio, are common in Lago, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. If you are looking for anyone in that town, I can help you find your ancestors. I have all births, marriages and deaths for Lago from 1810 to 1910, some before 1810 and some beyond 1910.

I was adopted at birth and the only thing I know about my biological father is his name was Anthony Naccarato, he was from New york city and he was a gambler and a Drinker. He has another daughter named Diane and son whom is a priest somewhere.

That Sicilian word nnaccaratu is the best one I heard yet. I'm going to run that by a couple of guys at work who are from Cozenza. Frank's opinion is that the name is to old to translate. I used a modern Italian American dictionary one time and roughly came up with, "plow caster." I think thats way out there though. Thanks for the info.

Wow, thanks Tony. What great insight. It is the only explanation of the meaning of the name I have ever heard. I was kind of hoping the name meant "kick-ass warrior" or something like that, but now I know. I know there are many Naccaratos in the U.S., but I have yet to encounter one on a few recent trips to Italy. My Grandparents said they were from Abruzzi which is the rear ankle of the 'boot' of Italy. Next time I'll really research it before I go and try to track down someone that shares our surname. I'll post my results here . . . and I'll get some figs to bring home if they still sell or live near them ( :

Mary married Guiseppe Decicco and the move to USA
in 1911. Married came to the us by ship which was
at a Naples port. She and her 2yrs old son travel with

In two recent trips to Italy I have not encountered any other Naccaratos, although I have yet to travel to Abruzzi - the region I believe my ancestors to originate.

Jeff I know I have relatives in Detroit. My Grand father was Calabraise where he returned in the 1960's and is burried there. I have a book published by Halberts Family Heritage which claims the name means, "one who grew and sold fig; one who lived near a wild fig grove." Then they say you might find other meanings so I don't know if there just making it up or not. I have 2 pals at work who are from Calabria and they have no clue as to the meaning of the name, All I can say is that I'm not pleased with the product. Hope that helps a bit.

Wow- this is crazy! I am married to Ray Formost. His father was August Formosa whose family changed their name to formost when they immigrated to Chicago in the 1920's. They were from Falconara Albanese. August married Celestina Ristucci who was also from Falconara Albanese. Her nieces and nephews still live in Chicago. Celestina is 93 and lives in San Diego. Hi, looking for information for my great grandmother Antoinetta and her brother Luigi, who I believe came from Cosenza, Calabria region. Antoinetta married Pietro Parque (Porco) and moved to the United States (Arizona & California) around the turn of the century. My grandmother, Elina, said that Antoinetta had a aunt and uncle in Palermo who raised a niece withthe same name (Antoinetta). Her brother Luigi moved to Canada.
