Hi Joanna,
I don't think your Nadeau line is closely connected to mine. My Nadeau line came from Joliette and immigrated to Minnesota in the mid-1800s (Brothers Sylvan in the 1850s, Joseph in about 1873). "Nadeau" is a very common French Canadian name. However, the Nadeau lines have been pretty well documented by French Canadian genealogists, so it might be just be a matter of getting back far enough to hook up with someone else's research. I will check the resources I used that proved helpful and will send them to you in an Ancestry message. The "father" of the North American Nadeau line was Joseph Ozanny Nadeau, who married Fille du Roi Marguerite Abraham. Google him for more info.

Antoine Nadeau and Domitille Lacasse were the parents of my ex-father-in-law. I have been trying to help my son with his genealogy. I did find some information, but it is very difficult with that family because they came down to the states and lived in CT for a few years, then went back to Canada. My in-laws lived in ME and my ex-father-in-law died on Jan. 16, 1959 in Springvale, ME at their home. We lived next door. He was a wonderful man. Have a great day, Nancy Auclair

Thank you so much for responding to my inquiry.
What you found might be just what I am looking for. I got a response from Diane and she had done some research on Nadeau's in St. Norbert's parish. Parents were Marcel Nadeau and Olive Belleau. Children were: Marguerite, Adolphe, Eugene, Joseph, Ludger, Marie, Napoleon, Pierre and Thomas. She had a connection to Thomas. Do you think Joseph could be William's baptismal name? Is there some way to check this out. I was hoping the St. Norbert's parish might help with your research.

Do you have a connection to the Nadeau's? If you need anything looked up in the U.S, let me know and I'll try to find out anything for you.

Thanks again. Judy

Well, hello!! You must be "Jack & Grace"'s daughter! I am
Emma Nadeau's oldest granddaughter, Threse (Welsch) McCarten. I met your parents as a child in the 1970s, when they were here visiting Minnesota. There are photos from the visit posted on my family tree. I've been hoping to eventually make contact with someone from your Nadeau line - my mother was going to try to get some names/addresses for me. She thought Nancy still kept in touch with your family.

I have actually learned a great deal about Sylvan Nadeau and his family since I posted this query a year ago. At that time I had little other than the photo of him in his soldier's uniform, his birth year and his death date. I began with a fishing expedition to the Centerville church, where I found his father & mother's names and discovered that he and Mary Louise Valois did not marry until 1903, when my grandmother Emma was 3 years old! Mary Louise was raised alone by her fother Oliver, because her mother died of consumption when she was only 4, and she had a little sister named "Rose Emma" who died of asthma about a year after the mother. I have now researched the Nadeau & Valois lines way back into Canada, and some of it back to France. It was a large family and they all worked for the railroad in one capacity or other. Sylvan's father, Joseph, was killed in a gruesome train tunnel accident in 1897. I also discovered that they followed Joseph's brother, also named "Sylvan Nadeau", from Joliette, Quebec, Canada to Minnesota around 1873. The older Sylvan Nadeau was a pioneer & founder of Little Canada, and is well documented in several local histories of the area. Apparently Joseph named his first child born in the US after the brother who helped them settle here.

I recently received, under the Freedom of Information act, the military pension file of Sylvan Nadeau & Marie Louise Valois. It's a fascinating read, there was a 30-year struggle with the government to first obtain the disability pension and then keep it.

I also have a few unlabeled photos belonging to my grandmother Emma Nadeau Nelson. We've managed to identify some of them. Oliver Valois is in 2, I believe Valerie Dufresne Valois (wife of Oliver's brother Louis) is also in one. There is another photo that I was recently able to identify with the help of another Ancestry member with facial recognition software, and it's Julia Bernier Dupre. I still have one final photo with 4 men, which I think might be Dupres, but no luck with identifying them yet.

Do you have a tree on Ancestry.com? If yes, I would love to see it. I live in Minneapolis and have access to a lot of records here through the MN Historical Society, perhaps I could help you if you are looking for something. I also read French very well, which has been a huge help when looking through the old French Canadian church records (The "Drouin Collection". Do you have any other old photos from the family? I am looking for photos of my mother as a young woman, but the more I look the more I think that they were too poor to afford it. Anyway, I'd be willing to share photos & documents I've already found.

I'm so glad you contacted me! My e-mail address is auntiesmedley@comcast.net. Feel free to e-mail me any time. Please also feel free to peruse my family tree and add any comments, hints, etc. I would really like an accounting of your Nadeau line.

Regards,

Threse McCarten

P.S. My mother, Marilyn (Nelson) Welsch, says "hi"!
