Changing the name is misery for the researcher. I have it in writing by my great great grandmother. Her and my paternal great great grandfather were French Canadians. He was Edward Cloutier and she was Theresa Cadieux. In Vermont they became Nailor. With the help of a professional researcher in Montpelier I was able to confirm it all and tied back 11 generations to Zacharie Cloutier.
Some of my distant relations spell it Naylor and others Nailer. That's to be expected. Regretfully, everytime you chase the name Nailor itself there is a tendency to take it to England. The possibility of an anglisized version from the French Cloutier is not mentioned. I find that very frustrating.
I have about 3,000 names in my data base and I communicate with a gent in Canada who has 14000 names in his data base (Cloutier/Nailor). If you can give me some info, perhaps I can help you.

Richard

my email has changed since I posted earlier. Oliver and Mary were living in Douglas County (Lawrence) Kansas in 1870. With them were John A. Titus (I think) age 11 and an 18 year old male whose name may be Taylor Farr.By 1880 Oliver and his 2 children were living with his new wife Melvina (we know they separated or divorced). Have much info on Oliver and Mary's descendants, looking for ancestors. Thank you.

Where exactly did you find them in Phily?
Don't give up on the connection to Bucks.
Many people who lived in Phily ended up in Bucks country or visa versa.
I find the name connection of William and Thomas very interesting. We have the same two names running through our family. I know they are common names, but still, it's worth pursing a little further.
I have a William in Bucks county born Sept. 26, 1800. His wife was Elizabeth Righter. He was born in Hunterdon County NJ and died in Bucks County July 6, 1874.

I looked at that 1860 record. And it seemed like such a good match except all of the dates are way off. Thomas was born in 1834. If the Mary Addis/Naylor listed is his wife she is suddenly 10 years older! Also the kids don't match. I know I have him in the 1870 census. It matches family oral history.

Here is what I know: Thomas Nailer/Naylor married Maria Addis just outside of Pittsburgh. Thomas was from Philly. Father named William born 1800 mother unknown. Thomas was mixed but Will might have been white?

These are all of the naylors
1.	Nailer, Hester	b.1868
2.	Nailer, Mary	b.1870
3.	Nailer, Thomas	b.1834
4.	Naylor, Hellen
5.	Naylor, Leanor
6.	Naylor, Marietta
7.	Naylor, Gabe
8.	Naylor, Rebecca May	1865 - 1904
9.	Naylor, William	b.1801

I found a william and mary in philly where the names of siblings match and the dates. I want to trace back further but I can find no other records.

Thanks for your help. My Grandma (who is decendent from the Naylors) was in the AME church. But, I have a soft sport for Quakers!

I thought I saw a connection to bucks county, but now I don't think so.

Did you see the 1860 Census record for Elizabeth Township in Allegheny County. There is a Thomas Nailor listed (who is black). He is listed as age 40 with a wife Mary age, 36. And four children, Lucinda, Zacheus, Catherine and Eliza. I would think they are definately related.

I don't think so, but you got that Nailer name somehow, so anything is possible. None of the Naylors I know in Bucks County were of mixed race. They were all white. But, as you know, it only takes one person to change that.

Most of the Naylors were Quaker and married other Quakers. My Naylors seem to be from a Protestant faith, usually Baptist or Methodist or Presbyterian.

But if your ancestors were in Pennsylvania, there are only a few Naylor lines in the state. They seem to be either from Philadelphia, Chester, Montgomery County (which was Phila. at one point) or Bucks County in origin. There are two Naylor groups I know of in Bucks. One from the Southampton area, which probably came from Philadelphia (that is John Naylor), and one from the Solebury area (my ancestors) who came from Hunterdon (That is Peter Naylor). Then slowly some of those Naylors/Nailors moved a little West.

I don't remember if the Poor children Report was just a Bucks County thing or a Pennsylvania thing. If it was a PA thing, you might be able to find a similar document in Allegheny county for your ancestors.

How far back do your Nailors go in Allegheny? And what were their names?

Could any of these people have been black or mixed race? I'm related to a Thomas Nailer (born 1834) married to Maria Addis (born 1846) with childern:

Rebecca May 1865
Hester 1868
Mary 1870

They were mixed race ... these dates seem way to early. And I have them in Forward, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania... But, maybe there is some connection.

Susan

Looking for Elizabeth Nailor who married Alexander. I do not know if they were married in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, or in Ontario, Canada. Most of their children migrated to Ontario, Canada. In addition I recieved burial info that they are buried in Ontario. I am making contact with most Morton's from this line, but my problem is I have no info on the parents or birth place of Elizabeth. It is my understanding the she was born in Northern Ireland. But can't place that as a fact. I am looking for the parish in County Fermanagh that their children were born. Anyone know of the Nailor that married into the Morton family that settled in Hasting County, Ontario, Canada please let me know.
Nailor Family of Troy, NY

Seeking information on the Judge and Nailor families of Troy, NY. Oldest confirmed ancestor is John Joseph Judge (b. Ireland, abt. December 1846; d. prob. 1926), who imigrated to US, married Julia NAILOR (abt. 1848-1887). They had four children: Frank Thomas, Bridget, Michael and Daniel. Frank (abt. 1879-1939) married Jane Elizabeth WALL (abt. 1877-1952), prob. November 1911. John Judge and his children remained in the Troy area, living on Ida Street. Surname of mother of John thought to be TRACY, though some recent evidence suggests CUSACK (father widowed and remarried?).
