This maybe a shot in the dark..I am currently on facebook. I have been connecting with The Nairne Family located in London. They are from London, Jamaica and I understand that I have decendants from Scotland. I am taking a chance, but I feel there maybe some connection. My Grandmother (from Jamaica) is a Thompson, but her maiden name is Nairne.

Awaiting your reply...Again...I am taking a chance due to your locations on family. Hope to hear from you.

Hello!!!!
I am so very pleased that I have finally heard from a connection to this side of my family.
Your Mary Mathers Nairn may fill in some holes regarding my grandfather's brother,Thomas, whom I believe was sent to live and was brought up by her and her husband. Mary's sister Catherine died giving birth to Thomas and a little later also her husband Rev. Thomas Graham died. They had several children and many were sent away to relatives to be brought up. My granfather was the eldest son and it was arranged that he be sent to the Crossly Porter Orphanage in Halifax, Yorkshire to be educated...he later became a Doctor.
I have much more information about other siblings if you would like to contact me directly and we can share some information.
helenblack@shaw.ca
Where are you living? I look forward to hearing from you.
Helen

I am descended from another daughter of Archibald Nairn and Catherine Rennie; Mary Mathers Nairn who married William Baird. Ihave names and dates of her descendents but am intrigued to learn she had so many siblings. I thought it was 2 elder sisters and 2 brothers.I'd be interested in learning more.

Hi,Mary
Ive just spotted your posting of 2003 & was wondering if you were still doing genealogy, when I noticed the 2009 postings. Ive been back 'doing' the Nairn side of my family & wondering why I couldnt find anything in the later Censuses for George Nairn born at Gills Farm,Dunlop on 1st July 1820..now I know.
You are trying to link the 2 main Nairn branches,I note. This isnt helped by the fact that there is a 20 year gap in the Old Parish Registers for Stewarton at a critical time.
I can link them through marriage, but apart from that, they dont link until much further back,in the late 1600s.
If you want more information, dont hesitate to get in touch. I still live in the area so it does make life much easier!
I also do have many of the other surnames that you are researching on my tree...many,many Highets.

Regards
Mary

Hi again Arnold.
I forgot to ask.Where do you live in Canada, and was it your father that emigrated, and when was that ??

My 2nd cousin, Colin Nairn,(son of Robert George Nairn-1st to come to N.Z in 1922)met your Aunty Violet Parker in 1999, when he visited Sligo. She showed him where the Nairns lived in Ballisodare, at a place locals call "Springfield".

A Brother of your Grandfather, called Russel left Sligo for Canada in 1902.I dont know where in Canada, but he also worked on the Railways. He died in 1959.born in 1889 at Bellihrihid.Wallace was the eldest I think. Also there was a William who joined the Scots Guards in 1898, and went to the Boer War.He also was in France in ww1, as were most of the Nairn men from Sligo. I can give you more details later if you wish ??Email kerry.nairn@xtra.co.nz

Bye for now.

Thanks for your reply Arnold.
As I mentioned my connection to Ballisodare is through my Gt Grandfather- David John Nairn 1871- 1933.David and Annie left Ballisodare in 1893.Since he worked on the Irish Railways the Family moved around alot. They had 10 children. They settled in the vilage of Lisbelaw in Co Fermanagh. My Grandfather Albert and 2 of his Brothers, Robert and William came out to N.Z in the early 1920s, having been caught up in that conflict at the time, being Protestant Policemen, they were targeted by the IRA at the time, and decided to leave Ireland.Albert was also a Policeman in N.Z.His Irish wife Elizabeth, died on arrival in N.z and afew years later Albert married my Grandmother Myra. They had 5 children of whom my Father was the eldest.Alberts brother, William John Nairn, had a son, born in Ireland 1922, named Ronald CECIL Nairn.William Nairn fought at Gallipolli in 1915.Ronald was a decorated fighter Pilot in ww 2.He went to America and became a fairly wealthy man.He lived in Thailand also where he died aged 82.Robert nairn the first of the 3 Brothers arrived in N.z in december 1922.He had been in a shoot out with the rebels, and after being wounded came to N.z.Albert and William arrived in 1924.

Hope this is of some interest to you.
Anything more you can tell me about the Irish Nairns would be great.Do you have any Photos of them ??

Regards Kerry.

Hi Kerry,
I have just started using this site last week to try and find out a bit more about my family. I know holy trinity church in Ballisodare well, I have found it very difficult to get very far with the family tree because unfortunately the Church record were sent up to Dublin for safe keeping and were lost in the Easter rising of 1920’s. My Father was Cecil, Jonathan Nairn. He was born in 1925. He had an older bother Herbert and to Sisters Ruby and Violet. Ruby died in child hood.
His father was Jonathan born 1889 he married Heleana Mullen also from Ballisadare.

Jonathan was 1 of 11 or 13 in the family and the were all born in a small cottage past the the school in Ballisadare.

Jonathan’s father was William Nairn and he married Annette Brown.

William’s father I think was Robert Nairn that is all the information on him I have.

I have a cousin that did a rough sociology trail of the family. As you probably know the name is Scottish in origin, he believes that some Nairn’s worked in mills in Scotland and the owner of these mills started a business in Northern Ireland and they came over. (I am think as experienced workers)

I am not sure exactly on this information or the time scale as I have not been able to find out any more information, but I do know that nearly all the Nairn men work at the Flour and animal food mill in Ballisadare. This mill was owned by the Pollexfen Family and William Bulter Yeats Mother was related to the Pollexfen Family.

I am getting off the thread a bit, any way the Nairn’s seem to have been mainly mill workers / labours.
I have not been able to find out what happened to most of the family from my grandfathers generation, I know 2 moved up the Northern Ireland and I moved to Canada my Grandfather and at least 1 of his brothers remained in Ballisodare.

From my father’s generation 2 of his cousins stayed in Ballisodare. 1 of these had 11 children and they form a large group there now as only 3 have moved away from Co Sligo and all are living in Ireland.

Best Wishes Arnold

Re: Elusive Nairn Relatives

...continued,

I forgot that I do have some information on John and Mary Nairn, the parents of Justina.
This family moved around ALOT.

In the 1900 U.S. Census Mary Ann (Moore) Nairn is living in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio with 3 of her children. She is a widow at this time (and of course there is no 1890 info).
May (aka Mae), Louis, and Marcella Morrow (who is 31-ish and listed as a widow)
In this census Mary stated that she was the mother of 7 children and that 6 were living, to date.

Now, trying to find all the children and putting them in age order, this is what I have come up with...

(via 1870 census in Dublin, Wayne, Indiana)
Father: John Nairn b: Scotland
Mother: Mary A. b: "Canada E" (English)

Son: John b: in Ohio
Daughter: Mary M. b: in Ohio
Daughter: Justina b: in Ohio
Son: George b: in Kentucky
and
Son: Louis b: in Indiana that year in May
I think I may have several dates off by a bit on some of these people in my records, BUT I also believe that some of the people who were census takers were, hmm, not so bright. I KNOW this is them, but their ages are off. In 1870 John is listed as 40 y/o and in the 1880 census he is listed as 39. Go figure.

Now, (via the 1880 U.S. Census in Covington, Kenton, Kentucky)

The children are as follows...

Daughter: Marcella
Daughter: Justina
Son: George
Son: Louis
Daughter: May b: in Tennessee
I think that MAYBE Mary M. as the daughter in 1870 is the same person as Marcella as the daughter in 1880 and there after.

Now, back to the 1900 census when Mary had said she is the mother of 7 with six living...I have the six all in the other 2 census'. Don't know where number 7 is, but atleast I have all the others.
1. John (oldest)
2. Mary Marcella
3. Justina
4. George
5. Louis
6. May (Mae)(youngest)
I am going under the assumption that the "7" child is actually probably the "1" child.

Ok, there is the rest of what I have for my Nairn line. I hope this gets to some one who can help.

OR if I am WAY OFF (which I don't believe that I am) if someone can point me in the right direction.

Again, thanks for reading this and thank you a head of time.

Mollie

Elusive Nairn Relatives

Hello. My name is Mollie. I am trying to find information and any connections any one might have to my line. I know that several other relatives of mine have tried for years to find info. on our line, with no luck that I know of yet.

OK,
Starting with John Nairn born abt 1841-42 in Scotland
Died Oct. 27 1890 (not sure where. Either Canada or Ohio)

I believe that his father's name was Daniel and he too was born in Scotland. I also believe that John's mother (Daniel's wife) was Justina (no maiden name) and she was born in Scotland as well.

John Nairn married Mary Ann Moore.
She was born May of 1845 or 46 in Canada
and died Feb. 4, 1911

John and Mary had a daughter, Justina. (My great-great-grandmother)I have not found any siblings for Justina. That's not to say there weren't any.

Justina Nairn, born Oct. 18, 1877 (or '78) in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died Aug. 5, 1928 in Dayton, Campbell, Kentucky. But is buried in Cincinnati, Ohio @ St. Joseph Cemetery.

Justina was married to William F. Bittelmeyer on March 5, 1889 in Hamilton county, Ohio. Justina and William were divorced on April 1, 1896.

Before the divorce Justina and William had a son,(there might be more children but I do not know yet) Nairn William Bittelmeyer (aka William Nairn but on legal documents his first name is Nairn). This is my great-grandfather. Nairn was born March 3, 1891 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was married to Mary Catherine Agnes Donelan on Jan. 10, 1917 in Newport, Campbell, KY @ the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Nairn died in a well documeted accident in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was an explosion at his place of work. This was on July 9, 1917. He was buired on July 11, 1917 in Cincinnati @ St. Joseph Cemetery.

When Nairn passed away, his wife, Mary, was pregnant with triplets moved back to Kentucky. In October of 1917 4 months after Nairn passed, Mary delivered the triplets. On October 31, 1917. Two of them (John and Mary) only lived an hour. The other one Nairn Joseph, lived. This Nairn Joesph Bittelmeyer is my grandfather.

PLEASE, if any of this sound even remotely familiar to any one, drop me a line. I am trying very hard to find out more about Justina Nairn and her parents and possibly siblings. I am also looking to find where they were before Ohio. I believe Canada, but where I am not sure. And if there is any info out there about this Daniel and Justina, that would be fantastic too.

Waiting with baited breath
Thank you in advance!!
Mollie

If this is the case I have an ancestor by the name of Nairn from there:

Eliza b. 1832-1833, daughter of Benjamin b. abt 1806, m to Mary Ann (surname unknown).
I am searching for Scotland family information for Isabella Nairn. I believe she was born July 1, 1797. She married Robert Graham (b 1806), travelled to America in 1837 (departed from Greenock on ship Lenore) with her husband and 2 children (James b 1832, Emily b 1837). They settled in Mt Savage, Maryland.

Mollie, I think we are the only ones out there looking for these guys. I actually found Mary Ann Moore's(Patrick and Mary) parents tonight! They were from Mayo, Ireland. And John Nairn's parents are Paul and Justina(I believe they were from Perth, Scotland). I just noticed I posted something back in 1999 on these boards. It really shouldn't take ten years to find ancestors!

Hi Theresa,
I'm specifically in the Judge part of your cousins...Bridget Judge and Honora Judge,as I have compiled 65 pages on ALL Judges in Nfld. that I can find over past 200 years, but cannot so far find anything on Bridget and Honora, other than they existed,Honora born 1858.
So wondering if in your records you have ANYTHING on Bridget Judge...her parents, birthplace, anything.Did she have a brother Michael?
Have been regularly in touch with Kathy, but your posting is very recent.
Thanks.Ward. wardgreene@hotmail.com
Johnna
My name is Theresa Nearen-Almonacid and my gggrandfather was Lawrence Nearin (his brothers were Morris,James and Thomas) from Portugal Cove, Newfoundland and Sydney, Nova Scotia. I believe that the Julia you speak of would have descended from Morris and you speak of a photo. I would love to see this photo to look for a family resemblance and I am happy to share any info or photos I have. I do not do this often so not sure when you will get this??
I hope soon.
Thanks
Theresa Nearen-Almonacid tnearen58@yahoo.com

Try the LDS (Latter Day Saints), they have fantastic Scottish records. I'm also a decendant from the Nairns, and found records I never expected. You can also try just googleing Nairn+crest or shield and see what you find. Hope it helps. Dawn Bennett

Hello Dee,
I feel sure that there is a connection with my Nairns somewhere. Some of our Nairns went to Western Australia, and our family members always moved to a place near other Nairns. I just have not connected yet. I have read several books, many years ago ,about the William you mention, one being 'Come back in, Billy Nairn', or a very similar name.

I have traced my Nairns back to:-

Andrew Nairn (weaver) m Jean (I am not convinced of this connection. I am trying to connect Cuthbert Irone of Bloakhillhead or the Cuthbert who married Janet Gardner in 1731

His son, Robert Nairn (b 1732) of (Rigghead/Irvinehill) m 1. Margaret Howie
m 2. Janet Howie (This is the conjecture of another researcher, and the children were born after Margaret's children)

Robert Nairn's Chidren to Margaret Howie were:-
Cuthbert Iron/Nairn (Irvinehill)
Jean (Irvinehill)
Robert (Irvinehill)

Possible children to Janet Howie were:-
James
John

Cuthbert Iron/Nairn (b 1752) m Margaret Highet.

Cuthbert's children were:-
Marion
Rott/Robert (Irviehill) m Ann Weir
William (b 1778) m Margaret Gemmell
Agnes m ? Muir
James ?m? Jane White
John
Cuthbert (maybe merchant in Paisley)

William's chidren were-

Robert m Agnes Ferguson
Margaret
James ?m? Susannah parker
Cuthbert
William
John
David (did he die in Auchintiber?)
Thomas
George (b 1820) m Margaret Wyllie
Andrew

George and family came to New Zealand( Wife and 5 children in 1856 on the 'Lord Burleigh.) His children born in Scotand were:-

William
John b 1847) m Catherine Stewart nee Donald in NZ
Robert
Margaret
George
+ more children born in New Zealand

I do not have all of my papers with me, but I know that one of the sons, Donald, born in NZ, went to Perth with his family later on. He had four daughters. I feel sure that he knew of another Nairn family there.

I have kept as many details of Nairns as I can find. One day they will link up. These Nairns were dairy farmers and cheese-dealers.

Does anyone know the name of Sir Michael Nairn's father? He died in 1930.

Hope some of this helps.

Mary
Hello all -

I'm stuck on Eliza NARAN who was married under this name, subsequently said her maiden name was NAIRN but always her birthplace was Maldon, Essex. Her father was Thomas NARAN, a Marine. Any pointers gratefully received!

Regards Ant
