This is James Henry Nance. There was also a James Harvy Nance in Tippah County, MS. He was a descendent of Reuben Nance. This makes things a little confusing. James Henry's first wife was Buena Vista Serena Caroline McCown, daughter of Alfred McCown. She died from tuberculosis and left him with small children (including my grandmother, Sallie Blanche). He then married Hennie and fathered several more children. James Henry was descended from Terrell Nance and Elizabeth Oakes, daughter of James Oakes and Elizabeth LeGrand. I have been looking for Terrell's father for years, but refuse to give up. Judging from his age on the 1800 Rockingham County, NC, census, (and from the ages of his children) John Nance would have been born around 1760-1764. From your web-site, I have found two Johns in this time span. One is John, son of Isham, brother of Reuben. The other is the son of Robert Nance. Robert died between 1800 and 1810 and left his farm to John. In the 1810 census, this John is in Granville, NC.
Any insight you could give me for finding Terrell's father would certainly be appreciated.
