I am researching the Jehu(aka John)Nave family of Giles CO TN (by default). Seems several Naves marr into 'my' families including my McCormack and Wells clans and also the Phelps famiy.

& By default, I have gathered several Jehu/John Nave records and have pasted them below for those interested in this group. Suspect I will find more Nave records as I continue reading through the later Giles CO TN deeds.

If anyone on this board is interested in this family, please respond. I did find a few postings on this board regarding this group, but they were quite old.

NOTE: 26 May 1849 Giles CO Deed Bk-U, p38, Reg. 15 Feb 1850, Laban A WESTMORELAND recovered a Judgement before John NAVE a Justice of the Peace Giles CO , $34.82 and costs, whereas on the 30 May 1849 sd Justice issued Execution against the Estate of Mary PHELPS to satisfy sd Judgement which sd Execution was placed in the hands of Gustavus A HOPKINS a Constable of sd CO ... there being no personal property to levey this fifo I then Levey the same on 30ac and 122 poles of land being the Dower of Mary Phelps late widow of John McCORMACK lying on Indian Creek adj William W/M McNAIRY and others and as the property of sd Mary Phelps this 11 day June 1849... the Judgement and all the papers in sd Circuit Crt of sd Crt of Giles at the Aug Term thereof 1849 to sell the same... Laban A Westmoreland being the highest bidder the same was struck off to him at the price of $45 ...

NOTE: 28 Dec 1849 Giles CO Deed Bk-U, p39, Reg. 15 Feb 1850, Charles J NEAL of Giles to Ananius PITTS (resident CO not specified), $1 and other consideration, (personal property including) one sorrel colt, filly, yoke of Oxen, ox cart, 75 head of stock hogs, two beds and bedsteads & clothing, one bureau & one grind stone that sd Neal bound himself to warrant the title to the sd pp against lawful claims of all persons ... But this deed is made for the following uses & trusts & for no other purpose that is to say I (sd Neal) am indebted to Wily NEAL in the sum of$53 by note due 25 Dec 1849 & to Ananius Pitts in the sum of $15 due the 25 Dec 1850 & the sd Ananius Pitts is bound as my secruity for abt $65 to Joseph G CHILDRESS due the 25 Dec 1849 & I am desirous to secure & make certain the payment of sd debts ... Side NOTE: Mary Phelps, nee Birdwell (d/o John Birdwell), marr 1st to John McCormack who d.abt 1830, then marr to Josiah Phelps. Mary Phelps was enermated in the Oct 1850 census so she was (presumably) alive at that time. This census is the last (known) record of Mary.

Side NOTE: Assume this is Charles J Neal the s/o Wiley Neal (Wiley s/o the "elder" Charles Neal b.abt 1772). Annanais/Ananius Pitts marr to Sarah Neal the d/o the "elder" Charles Neal, and therefore ... Ananius Pitts was the Uncle of the younger Charles J Neal.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Jehu Nave of the County of Giles and State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and memory, and Knowing the uncertainty of life, do make and ordain This to be my last Will and Testament. That is to say, after all my lawful debts are paid, I give and bequeath the remainder of my estate, real and personal to my beloved wife Elizabeth, who is also entitled to Dower, and to all my children, namely, Amanda D., who married James D. Scales, Emily F. who married George W. Woodring, Mary Ann, Josephine who married Matthias G. Pitts, Desdamonia, Thomas H. B., Ursula Isabella, and Ann Henry or so many of them as may be living at the time of my decease, and to their body heirs forever; to be divided equally between them, share and share alike; My wife Elizabeth to have her dower laid off and my son Thomas H. B. to have the remainder of the land, but he shall take it at valuation, paying the other heirs for any overplus, and receiving from them in like manner should the value fall below an equal share.
I do hereby constitute and appoint my wife Elizabeth, and my son-in-law George W. Woodring my executors who shall divide and portion off said property or cause the same to be done giving to each his or her portion respectively as they may marry or arrive at the age of twenty one years. I hereby revoke and make null and void any will by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal. June 1st, 1857.

George W. Woodring, Executor and Others vs. James D. Scales and Others:
George W. Woodring and Elizabeth Nave were Executor and Exutrix of the Will of Jehu Nave. Complainants would show to the court that Jehu Nave died August 17, 1857 - testate, at his home in Giles County. He left surviving his widow Elizabeth and children: Amanda D., married James D. Scales, Emily married George W. Woodring, Josephine married Mathias G. Pitts, Mary Ann married Gustavus H. Harris, Desdamonia, Thomas H. B., Ursula Isabella, and Ann Henry Nave. At the time of his death, Jehu Nave was the owner of one tract containing 233 acres and one other tract containing 113 acres. The heirs of Jehu Nave petitioning the Court for the sale of land. Desdamona married A. M. Phelps, Ann Henry married W. O. Bennett, Ursula married [one of the] W. H. Wells [William Henry Wells assumed s/o Peyton Wells of Lincoln CO TN].
