Wilma: You end with an excellent question. William Nave's father was George Nave [G5123] son of a Henry Nave aka Knave and a wife Margaret. Henry died in Shendoah or Rockingham Co., VA about 1787. To the best of our knowledge no Cherokee here. However George Nave was married to a Veronica, aka "Fanny" Moore who could have been part Cherokee. We just do not know as we don't have a record of her parents. She died in Oct of 1840 in TN however William could have had a previous marriage to a Cherokee. Again we have not found a primary records to support this.

We have worked with the Daws and and Miller Rolls which were later and I assume your earlier information on the Harris migration came the following record we have:

Cherokee Emigration Rolls 1817-1835--listed William Nave family of 6 plus 4 slaves to leave Tennessee and then their arrival on May 16, 1834 in Indian territory in Oklahoma with a group led by Lieutenant Joseph W. Harris. Information about the trip can be read in the Grant Foreman book "Indian Removal:The Emigration of the Five Civilized Tribes of Indians". Also the book "The River Trail, A Saga of the Cherokee Removal" by Jane Noble has some of Lt. Joseph W. Harris's journals of this trip. The book by Jane Noble is hard to find. I located one in Muskogee, Oklahoma and recently went there and looked at it. Not part of the Trail of Tears migration in 1838-39. We do have William married 3 times, the second marriage to Annie aka Nancy Ross.

When I wrote the NEFF NEWS article on the Trail of Tears I worked with the Cherokee Information Center in OK as they had just completed the indexing of the Ross cemetery there and we exchanged information on the Naves and related folks buried there. I did not go into any depth on the Harris migration records at that time.

Feel free to email me: neffnews at ix.netcom dot com and I will be glad to share group sheets with you. I can send them in electronic format attached to an email.

Bill Neff Co-Editor NEFF NEWS

Re: Nave family and the Trail of Tears & DNA project

Dear Bill,
I found this the other day and thought you might be interested in it, which you may already have this information also so I apologize for repeating myself if you do. For background, I am descended from the William Nave that was married to Annie Ross and his daughter, Frances Myra Nave who married William Hixon. In looking at the Trail of Tears information, I found the following:
The family of Joseph Coodey (Jennie Ross) and the family of Annie Nave (d. 1826) immigrated in 1834. A son of Annie Nave (Louis) and a daughter of Jenny Coodey (Rosa) died during the 1834 removal.

On the Emigration Roll of those persons who left the Cherokee Nation East after receiving their commuation allowances are included here because a number of them joined the Harris Company along the way and all of them were making the journey at the same time and under similar conditions we have the following with the date of their arrival listed:
John Nave (1) Arr. May 5, 1834 - Dead
William M. Nave (10)Arr May 16, 1834 - one died 2nd July (We think this may have been William's third wife).

On the Cherokee Emigration Rolls (1817-1835) we found the following (I believe these are the dates they actually signed to go):
December 1833
Date # Name Census/residence
6 #158 Nave, John One male under age of 25 with residence at Lookout Mountain.
#159 Nave, Daniel R. One male under age of 25, residence at Lookout Mountain.

25 #176 Nave, William, one male under 10, one male under 25, 2 females under 10, 1 female under 25, one female under age of 50, 1 male slave, 4 female slaves, residence at Chicamauga (sic), Georgia

#177 Nave, Henry, one male under 10, 3 males under 25, one male under 50, three females under 10, 2 female under 25, 1 female under 50, 3 male slaves and 4 female slaves.

My question is this? We have heard like everyone else ever has that the naves had an Indian in their background, such as a grandmother who was full-blooded, but have never found any proof. Why would John (who was a brother to William and Henry maybe) and Daniel R (whom we had never heard of) go with this removal unless they were Indians? Henry and William of course were married into the Cherokee tribe. Can you answer this one for me?
Nave children - unknown parents TN to MO/Ark

I have looked for years for the parents of the following Nave children:
William b 1808, Abraham b 1809, Jacob b 1814, Elizabeth b 1819, Isaac and Redissa (Dicy) b 1820, Catherine b 1821, John b 1823. The mother's first name was Mary according to Turnbo. She and the children appear in the White River area of MO/Ark about 1830, where she re-married a Lewis Dennison.
There are several theories but no proof to the names of the parents. One theory is the mother’s name is Mary Margaret Ward according to descendants of her Dennison children. Another is Mary Thornton, and still another is Mary Morrison and John Nave.
Does anyone have any proof of the mother’s or father’s name?
Does anyone have a Nave male in their line that you don't have any info on? If so, this may be our missing link. Please email me at lj68114@cox.net.

Nave - Neff Y-chromosome DNA Project

The Neff Family Historical Society began a Y-chromosome DNA project in 2005. Our goal was to obtain DNA from known members of our various Nave- Neff-Naff and Naef family lines which can now be compaired to a DNA test from a Naf in Switzerland. To learn more about the project, go to:
www.familytreedna.com/public/neff

Click on "Y" results.
Also see News and Goals.

The Nave surname associated with the Neff family is a variation of the Swiss spelling Naf or Naef found in the 1730's in York Co., PA and then down into VA and eastern Tennessee. Other than German or Swiss origin, we have no known connection to the surname NAVE from England or Canada.

Family Tree DNA of Houston, TX was selected by us based upon both their reputation and that they are the prime contracting company for the National Geographic Societies "World Migration Project". For additional information, email: neffdna[at]neffnews.org. The [at] must be replaced with an @ in the email address.

Bill Neff, Neff Family Historical Society, Harrisburg, PA
William S. Nave and his wife Margaret Jane Lewis were from Carter Co., TN and had a daughter Nancy born 24 May 1852. Their earliest child was born in 1850. This family and Nancy's birth date are from a Bible record provided by Robert T. Nave. Have nothing on an earlier Nancy Nave and nothing in the new Nave family genealogy. Sorry I can't be of more help.
The information about Jane Crow is interesting.
The wife that went to the Cherokee Indian Territory in Oklahoma with our William Nave, died shortly after they arrived there in May of 1834. There are records of their arrival, by Lt. Joseph Harris, leader of the group that they arrived with in Oklahoma. It's an interesting story about the travel of the group which is in a book about the journals of Lt. Joseph Harris.
I looked up Jane Crow on Rootsweb world connect and found
some websites that had a Jane Crow married to a William Nave in 1827 in Tennessee. They had children after our William Nave's wife would have died in Oklahoma.

Françis Myra Nave Hixon was born November 15,1816 died November 11, 1897. I got it off here tombstone. Her father had to be Henry Nave because he is listed in the Georgia Walker Valley 1840 census.
The cunningham name comes from the book "History of the Cherokee Indians by Emmett Star.
Françis Myra had twin girls in 1839 one of which is my 2nd great grandma. Nancy Jane Hixon Miller. William Nave and Annie Ross had two girls that had the same names as Françis Myra's twins.
Françis was in the trail of tears she moved back to Chattanooga and married William Hixon. William Hixon was in Raburn's Guard for the Indian roundup.

Hey Mark. William and Annie Ross married in 1823 and she died in 1826. Annie could not have been her mother since Frances was born before they married. Henry and Susannah had a daughter named Frances Myra also. She is the one who married the John Cunningham and they stayed in Oklahoma. It is right that William and Annie had twin daughters, Mary Ann and Nancy (or Nannie) as they called her. They had a son named Lewis also but he died evidently on the trail of tears.

Teresa Shouldiers

I found in Tennessee State Marriages, that a William Nave married a Jane Crow in 1827. Might this be our William and this is the wife that went on the Trail of Tears with him? or his third wife. I have not found anything yet on his first wife, who I believe to be Frances Myra's mother. I am hoping to get down to the library in Chattanoga as they recently had an article in the paper about a bunch of records that had been donated and then "lost" in their storage and supposedly it is a whole host of papers involving the Indian removal.

Dorothy ann Waxler and Grover "Jerry" Naves had two daughters.. Tammy Renee and Trilbia Diane. I know that she was named after Trilbia America. This is exciting! I really didn't think anything would come up when I searched this.

My great grand mother was Clara Bell Naves. My Grand father is Grover cleavland Naves II. He married Dorothy Ann Waxler, had my mother Tammy Renee Naves,b June 10 1958 d.June 28 2008, who had 3 girls Shandy Roof, Shala, and Breanna Johnson. This is pretty interesting. I'm not sure all the details on My great grandmother, she passed away when I was young, but My Grandfather"Jerry" is still alive and lives in Oklahoma. At one point he married a woman named Betty, and moved to Las Vegas. Thats all I know. I hope I helped someone.. I am looking forward to hearing from anyone on this. Any thing they can tell me about my history.
