my email is stearman2003@yahoo.com

Funny about those Neelys (sp?) I have still been unable to prove that my grandmother, Eva Mae Bowden Neely was married to my Grandfather, Vincent Terrell Neely, Sr. I have found that he was married to another woman before her that no one ever mentioned and there were never any photos that gave evidence of a marriage. My father never talked aboout his family either, but as a child I never really asked and my father died in 1987.
My father was a red headed freckled faced man like his mother. But, my uncle Paul had dark hair and tanned well, probably like his father's side. Paul's middle name is also Oliver. I'm so excited for you. Let me know how things progress. It might help me to distinguish between these Jefferson Davis Neelys and help me get back to Ohio. If you figure out what to do with slave schedules let me know. They seem almost useless to me except for location of the slave owner.

Thanks for replying to my request for info. You've given something to work on and I appreciate it. I'm doing the search for my husband who did not grow up knowing his father. His mother, now deceased, was Amy Mills, an only child. I'm not certain, neither is my husband, that his parents were married. I cannot find a record of marriage. However, M. Oliver Neily appears on my husband's birth certificate, with "Neily" crossed out and replaced with "Nealy" I assume to correct the spelling. My husband was born in Tampa, Florida in 1931. My husband is a fair-skinned black man with sandy hair and high cheek bones. We suspected he may be of mixed heritage, as I am, perhaps American Indian. His mother, when living, never talked about my husband's father, and when I began searching years ago, I asked for info., but she refused it and was angry that I asked. That leads me to believe there was no marriage, and given the times in which they lived, their relationship was probably frowned upon. My husband's mother married (again?) and he has several half-sisters and brothers. He was raised by his step-father whose sur-name was "Saxton," however, he kept the name "Nealy." I appreciate hearing from you because you've given me a new direction in which to search. All the former clues, what little there were, had grown cold. Thanks again for responding.

I know you wrote this avery long time ago. but I thought I'd try anyway. MY grandfather's brother was Oliver Matthew Neely of Mobile Alabama who died in 1932 in a drowning in Chickasabogue Park. My Grandfather's Uncle was also named Oliver Lee Matthew Neeley who is buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery in France. He was a casualty of WWI. However I believe that there may have been another Oliver Neely. The Neely/Neely/Nealy/Neily family it seems must have had creole features as it sometimes they were listed on the census as black, sometimes white and sometimes mulatto. I never met any of them. Most of them died when my father was young. Most of them were VERY obese people and of the men that I have a cause of death on, they died of chronic vascular heart disease and other heart related issues.
I think the cunsus thing had to do with a "one drop" rule they had back then. There are many Neelys buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery here in Mobile, not far from the front gate. My father, his father and his father are all buried next to each other. Then there is a Jeff Neely plot with the DeBriere Sisters, Mamie, Adelaide and Mary Ella. And Charles. I think this is your husband's family. Post again if you would like my email address. I love to hear from you.

John Nealy had a brother named Lewis I come from that side of the family. As far as I know they both served in the Columbus County Militia for the Confederacy both got wounded in a battle in Va, John in the head and Lewis in the hand. John lived 3 weeks on the trip back to Columbus County I think he died shortly after, Lewis of course lived and sired my family I wish I could tell you more but it's been years since I've read all this.

Re: Nealys/Schweigerts in Chicago area

Help! Please! I am having such a hard time finding anything on this family. I believe due to all the tradgety, I think the children do not remember the proper names of their parents and that makes it difficult. I have since found out his name is Albert, perhaps his middle name was Claude or his fathers name. They also lived in Indiana. Valentine Schweigert came from Germany one of his Daughters who is suppose to be named Mary married Albert ?Nealy and they had several children including my mother Clarice Nealy. My grandmother was supposedly found dead in a hotel room in Indiana or Illinois near chicago between 1934 and 1940. Her children were in and out of orphanages making census records hard to track. Any help Appreciated!

Joseph Phillip Nealy (1917-1996)

Joseph Phillip Nealy was born June 9, 1917 in Minden, Louisiana. He died Jan 5, 1996. I know nothing about his immediate family, but his father was John Calvin Nealy (b 11/15/1890, d 6/24/1948) and his mother was Ezora Broussard (b 7/4/1886, d 3/10/1945). John Calvin and Ezora Nealy are buried at Big Woods Cemetery in Calcasieu Parish. John Calvin Nealy was in the merchant marine and was a cook on a crab boat when he drowned accidentally. He had three other children, John Jr, Herbert, and Pearl Marie.

The parents of John Calvin were Jackson "Jack" Nealy (also spelled "Neely") and Mollie Brummit. Jackson Nealy was born in Louisiana about 1859 and Mollie was from Columbia Co., AR. She was previously married to a Newton Nash (no children as far as I can determine).

Jackson Nealy had a half sister named "Magnolia Yarbrough" - she was my great grandmother. I have solid proof of all of the above and would be happy to share information with descendants of John Calvin Nealy.
