Our John Wesley Neel was born in 1855. his wife Lucy was born in 1865. Lavaca is close.

Why did William Lee Neel go by Gibson G. Neel? Did he have something to run/hide from? I've been trying to figure out why John went by his middle name Wesley.

Do you have a census or records to show it's the same individual? Married Messena Rankin? Maybe I can use Gibb to track down his fathers farm. John Rented and therefore i don't know if his parents were close by Lavaca and Gonzales counties are neighbors, so I'll look in lavaca for 1860 census for a 5 yr old wesley neel.

Re: john wesley neel

Okay... Look at my Johnson Tree. Whew.. This was hard to track down. My Great Grandma Roxie was Lucy and John's daughter. Rumormill has it thart Roxie was Native Indian or Partial. But I go by data and what I can find.. or DNA. I need a YDNA male lineage from Lucy's father to prove that he was in fact American Indian. She only had 3 brothers, as far as I can tell. Daniel, thomas, and James.

John Wesley Neel or "Wesley Neel" lived with my Great Aunt Alma after his wife died and their youngest child "Eugene?" stayed with him. Shortly after moving from Gonzales, he traveled to Travis near chapel Hill and stayed with Oscar Neel. Presumably until he passed away. I cant find data.

Lucy died around the Fayette/Gonzales/Lavaca Counties. I havent been able to track the grave or death certificate.

I DID however find a Daniel A Harris married to a "Ellen/Elenden/Ellenden". Lucy's age aflls into place with their daughter AND they lived not far from John/Lucy's farm. This is the 'neighbors marry' theory. So I tracked the census for Daniel A Harris back to 1860ish when his first daughter Mary was born. I cannot find marital certs nor ties to Daniels home in VA, nor Ellenden "Ellen" in Alabama (reported birth places on census). Although in the 1870 census, Daniel is reported as being born in the "NATIVE" territory. This would suggest that he reported being an indian who pays taxes. Non-taxed indians are not enumerated in census. Could be why I cant track him, if he's from the reserve in W. Virginia.

This only closes another genetic door for the Sons of the Texas Republic organization. Need to prove someone from Roxie and Smith Johnson's side were in Texas before 1846. :(

I can prove my Mom's side. German and Czech influences everywhere fromt them.

John Wesley Neel's father is from Mississippi but I havent tracked his data yet. I have a Great Uncle Mack who's still alive who might have actually known his grandfather. I need to seriously go have a talk with him before he passes away.

It's tough to track some of these people.. The census keepers keep altering the spellings and I have to 'Line by Line' the whole county... This takes FOREVER! :D

Neel was spelled Neil, Neel, Neal, and Neill so far. Be careful when looking it up. It's possible that these Neel's are related to the Neel's in Mississippi that were post office managers and accountants. One of them kept diaries and his town died in the civil war. His diaries are in archives at a library. I'm attempting to see if they're related. There were Neel's in the Mormon wars as well.

Hope this data helps. Let me know if you find anything out! :)

Census says that our John Wesley Neel (the census misread the J W as a Z W) when your searching. Look for the kids. They match. John was born in Dec 1855. I have the census for 1870, 1900, and 1930 all showing the Family households. You can find the data on my Ancestry.com family tree "Johnsons"

Our John Wesley neel was born in Texas. Census says that he was married to "Lou" I assume short for Lucy due to another document having Lucy Harris. The kids match perfectly. john's parents were born in Mississippi according to his census data. He couldnt read/write. Owned a Ranch in Gonzales Tx area.

I am of the Lemmons descent of Monroe County. The name eventually became Leming. I have been able to trace back to a John Lemmons born around 1803 and he was married to a woman named Elizabeth. The lived in the Tellico Plains district that evenually became Coker Creek of which I am a direct descendant raised at Coker Creek. if you have any info on where John and Elizabeth came from I would appreciate it. That is the point I am stuck upon. I believe it to be Kentucky or North carolina.

Stuck on Neels in Tazewell Virginia

Well I am not sure how many different lines of Neels there are in Tazwell County, Virginia and elsewhere in that area however I am once again stuck. I have Luther E Neel 1917 and Ora Atwell Rudd married and with children and divorced but no death index info for Luther. Suggested death date is from a family letter. His sister listed as Lettie G was listed on the 1920 census and has fallen from the face of the earth. In addition when I pass from Luther E Neel to his father Thomas C Neel (or Cecil T Neel) and his wife Bessie Crouse - I can find no death information. After I pass that to whom I know is Thomas C Neels Father (Luthers Grandfather) John W Neel and wife Viriginia (no last name) they just stop - even though they are on the 1910 and 1920 census. If anyone has any info on this line of Neels so that I can verify the dates or any direction I can head in it would be helpful (hopefully before I rip off what is left of my hair).

Robin Higginbotham

This reply is for Richard

Hi there. You are stuck in the same place I have been stuck for awhile now, maybe that means we are related! There were two George W Neel's directly linked to the person's you mentioned. In the 1860 Tazewell census in the household of John Neel is his father William Neel and Mary Neel. It is reported that William and Mary were brother and sister and that their parents were Thomas Neel and Eleanor McFarland. In the 1850 census this same Mary Neel is living with Zachariah Neel (reported to be another brother) and inside this household is another George W Neel reported to be born about 1850 (this George would be my great grandfather). My Great grandfather married Rosa Bell Devor and they raised their family in Bland Virginia.

Please email me directly at tasmith9@swbell.net as I have tons of information on these folks. I would love to have some other names in your family to see if there is a link.

Theresa
I found a Luther E. Neel born Oct. 12, 1917 and died August 29, 1997 in Tazewell Va. His parents were Carl T. Neel and Bessie Neel (married name). He is listed with one sister in 1920. a sister Lettie G. Neel and she was two years older than Luther. There is another Luther E. Neel living in Bluefield Virginia, may be related and I think is still living. Hope this helps?

Theresa
tasmith9@swbell.net
Neel,
I am confused. Everybody assumed Ed's mother was
Tryphenia Barcroft. His death certificate says Lenora Caudle.
Neel,
I ordered Duncan Neel's California death certificate. On the 1930 Census, he is lodging with Agnes New in Riverside, Calf. The death certificate informant was Agnes New. I do not think there was any relationship as she did not know who his parents were and for his birthday she put January 18 with no year. At Evergreen Memorial Park in Riverside his marker has birth 1841 and death 1934. I looked at the 1900 Census to see what birthdate Duncan gave and it was January 1841. I feel convinced this our Duncan. If you would like a copy of the death certificate let me know. I would like to compare notes on his family.

sderingtox@sbcglobal.net

Looking for information on family of my great-grandfather Fred Bascam Neel, b. Feb 1875 Indiana, married Lulu Rhoades b.Jan 1877 Indiana, one child only Helen born Rochester NY 1901. Both died in the 1918 flu, leaving Helen a minor orphan. Have very little info on this side of my family (this is about it!). 1900 and 1910 Federal censuses say his father and mother were also born in Indiana, but no more clues. Would like to know if there is any more information out there. Not sure how to get birth records for Indiana before 1880, as it seems they were not centralized until somewhere around then. Family history says Ireland was not far in the past, but no indication of this so far.

I am replying to your post of Neels in VA. This may be a duplicate and if so I apologize. I am trying to find any information on Luther Neel born 1917 or 1918 in Tazewell VA. He may have moved at some time to work in the mines in West Virginia. Death states 1997 in Tazewell. Any information on that family or siblings would be wonderful

Re: Neel Family: Walton County FL

Ellen, I am a great-great granddaughter of Francis and Lillian Neel. I am descended from his son, William. Francis' father was Daniel Neel (Neil), as you know. His father was John Neill of NC, according to some records I have found. I have found 2 John Neills in the right area of NC but have not figured a way to prove which, if either, is the right one. I have not had a great deal of time to spend on it, but they were in Iredell County, which is only an hour from where I live. I would love to share more information with you, and would be particularly interested in the descendents, a current particular puzzle for me. Francis' son William was my great grandfather-from his first wife, Daisy. I would much love to be able to contact other family members of William or someone who could give me information on Daisy and her family. If you would like to exchange some information, please contact me! My e-mail is hurleytalk@surry.net.
