Hi, The census records...while great for reference? seem in this case to really need double and triple lookie loo's. It "starts" in 1850...In David and Didana's house? A James H. of appropriate age for "our" James Henderson Neely...BUT it also shows him as being in a household with first wife Abigail Riggs. I sort of blew this off to MAYBE James H. just visting his folks or something at the time census taker was at the door...then being in his own home when it rolled around again. Big assumption I know, but I have never seen any evidence that there were two separate James H. Neely's to contend with. At least not both born around 1830.
Then it gets interesting again in 1860, with two full households for James H. Neely that you mention...one shows the known of childrens names "correct" as we descendants know them...the other? too close to question...example: "eliza" "Clorin" instead of "Louisa"? and "Clarinda". The David A. versus Alexander M. is interesting but again? I think it is the same family. If anyone out there has different insight? I welcome the info and theories...my personal one is that the census taker was loaded. LOL.
My question is...well, one of MANY regarding this family...but who is the David A versus Alexander M?? If ages are semi correct in the double census of 1860? This same David A/Alexander M SHOULD show up in the 1870 census as about 14...but it shows him as age 11? I dunno.
As for Abigail Riggs? I don't know about a divorce...while she does disappear by 1870 census when James Henderson shows up with his second wife, Emma Wallen/Wallin...Most people, myself included, assume Abigail died.
I'm not in front of all my notes...but James H. Neely (who served with a Cousin, Another David and HIS son, William E. JR) went AWOL (James H) for a spell from the 48th VA Infantry in March 1862. He enlisted 01 July 1861...and was on the rolls as of October...but listed as AWOL by March 1862. I could not find any additional service related records for him beyond that date, nor have I ever seen a pension application by James H. or his 2nd wife, Emma. Could be out there somewhere, or it could be that our James H. never went back. I like to believe that if he did go AWOL that it was because he got word through family about his wife Abigail's illness or death? Again, alot of assumptions...In February of 1862, William E. JR received a disability discharge from company C 48th VA Infantry for being wounded in his heel.
I dont know a lot about Civil War service but another theory is that Abigail was ill or perhaps eventually died as a result of childbirth, since there is another child James L. Neely who shows up in 1870 census that is abt. 9 years old? Maybe he was Abigail's last? I havent worked this line for awhile...I just re-post some of my questions in case someone has a break through and feels compelled to share with the rest of us "Helen Keller" researchers.
To my knowledge on the marriage of Emma and James H? The aforementioned Cousin's son? William E. Neely JR. (presumably named after David's father, William Elijah Neely SR?) William Jr married a Malinda Wallen/Wallin...some believe this is a sister, or at the very lest, kin to the woman James H. Neely marries, Emma. Confused yet? LOL The marriage between James H. and Emma Wallen happens in Scott County, 18 November 1864. On the marriage record, James Henderson Neely lists himself as a widower and his parents as: David and Didana Neely. Pretty close to proof positive for me on James H. Neely's parentage anyways. (I have a copy of the original record somewhere)
And no, I dont subscribe to the belief that James H. Neely died in 1873 either..especially since I have him on census as late as 1900 in Floyd County. He is listed as being born in March 1830, 70 years old and married for 34 years. His wife, Emma, is listed as being born in April of 1844, 56 years old..gave birth to 9 children, 7 of whom are still alive in 1900. Their son, Lewis Neely is 19 years old and with his parents. I have a copy of a death record for a woman I BELIEVE to be Emma...but dont know for sure, nor do I know where she is buried. James H. Neely? Currently running down a few leads there too on burial but again, I havent worked the line in some time.
Dont know if I have helped, hurt or just added to the general feeling of confusion that we all seem to get in researching this family.

Stacey - I am sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. No, I haven't been brainwashed, but I am beginning to think we have a bunch of Houdinis in the family. I believe that James Henderson is the son of David and Didama Stanley Neely. He was married to Abigail Riggs, and apparently to an Emma, who was from Virginia, but moved with him to Floyd County. He and Abigail show up on the 1860 Scott, VA census with 4 children, including Andrew H, age 6. But there is also another James H and Abigail on the same census with 4 children of the same age, including Andrew H, age 6. One of these James H and Abigail live close to David and Didama. The other one lives close to Wilbern P and Catherine.

Also, Henderson and Emma are on the 1880 and 1900 Floyd census. He supposedly died in 1873, but I don't think so. Andrew H married Martha Calhoun in Floyd County in March 1876 and his parents looked to be alive. (My jaw also dropped over the 1860 Floyd County census reference.) I am also curious as to what happened to Abigail. Almost looks like a divorce. I can't tell where her children end and Emma's begin. According to the 1900 census, Emma had 9 children of which 7 were still alive. Some of her children were born before Abigail died.

I would like to verify the given name of Emaline Neely's first husband -- I think it was Landon A. Mallory, but I don't have any proof. I know that she left her two children by him, Sarah Adeline Mallory and Luther F. Mallory, with her sister Eliza after Mallory left/died. Then, after she married Moses Davis she retrieved the children and went with them to California. I don't know anything about a Mento husband, and would like to have information.

Thank you

I have them in Scott County, VA in 1860...was that a mistake perchance or am I looking at all the wrong people in this branchy family again? Stacey

Hi, David
I am Marilyn (Neeley) Hirtle, I beileve our James Henderson Neeley is the son of David Neeley and Didana Stanley.

The 1860 Floyd County Kentucy census shows James Henderson and Abigail Neely with children Andrew Haborn Neely age 6 Clarinda,Eliz, Andrew Habern. Alexander (also known as David Alexander)Neely.

On the same 1860 Floyd County, Kentucky census James Henderson's sister Serena (Neely)Day who married Francis Day. His brother Sylvester T. Neely who married Francis Peterson with their parents David Neeley and Didana (Stanly) Neely next door.

This is why i believe David and Didana (Stanley) Neely/Neeley are the parents of James Henderson Neeley.

I stem off James Henderson Neely/Neeley and Abigail (Riggs) Neely/Neeley by their son Andrew Habern Neeley and Nancy (Caudill) Neeley.

I know that there is a family member who is of closer relation to the Threkeld/Neeley families than I.

Lisa

My Samuel Neely came to America in 1785 from Belfast. His son, Samuel born in 1785, entered 'born at sea' on his census record.

Generally, Neely was a very recent Irish name. In 1605 there was only one Neely in all of Ireland. That one was a part of the Scottish settlement army. It is also interesting that Scotland was populated by Irish conquerors about 500 years before that. The Irish overran the Picts and that is why Scots are also Celts and why the naming pattern is so very similar. (IMHO anyway.)

Hi...I am not a Neely, but my GrandFather's half sister was.
Her name was Jospehine " JO" Neely. She was around 2 years old during the civil war. My GGM, Lucinda Moore married a Neely, who was killed in the war, Confederate side. I do not know his first name. I found a Lucinda Moore married a Cuthbert Franki Neely in Upson County, Ga., but I do not know if that is her. From my 91 yr old cousin's letter Josephine lived most of her life in an around Lafayette.
The Moores lived in Alabama and also migrated into Georgia.
Do you have any similar names in your Neelys.
Kathy

Dear Rebekah

I know this is an old posting, but thought I would give it a try anyway. My great grandfather was Joseph Warren Neeley. He was born in Tennessee. Move to Indiana as a child. Lead wagon trains to Oklahoma. Settled there in late 1850's and 1860's. Moved to Texas in 1870's and lived in Wise County. After his wife's death, remarried and moved to Houston County Texas in 1879 or 1890. Where he died. He is buried at the Daly Cemetery, near Grapeland, Texas. Many of this children from his first marriage moved back to Oklahoma.
I have a lot of information on him and his family.

I believe my line of Neeleys came from County Tyrone. I can track David Neeley back to the mid 1700's. If what I have found is correct, he came to America as an indentured servant. He married in Philadelphia, then began the trek south and west.

In the 1830-1850 period, there were a number of Neeleys in the Wise-Scott-Lee County Virginia area. My ancestors left that area and moved into Kentucky (Owsley, Clay, Jackson, Lee). They were a fixture in that area until the 1940s. Quite a few migrated to Ohio, particularly Cincinnati and Hamilton.

My Neeleys have also been spelled Neely.

I hope this helps. If I can fill in any blanks, please let me know.

Pam Niedert

I am descended from James Neely and Margaret Jane Grimes. They would be my 7x's great grandparents, I guess.
Richard Neeley's will, 1792-1798, Fairfield County, SC

This is a transcript (by me) of the WPA transcript of the will of Richard NEELEY. My particular interest here is the daughter, Jane. Does anyone know who and when she married? Of the NEELEYs listed in the will, only John and Ann are in the 1800 census. What happened to the rest of the family? Victor, for instance. Apparently he was of age when the will was written.

In the name of God Amen

The twenty fourth day of July in the year of our Lord 1793 I RICHARD NEELEY of the State of South Carolina, in the county of Fairfield, being very weak in body; but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God for the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing, that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament: That is to say, Principally, and first of all, I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it, [interlined: and for my body] I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner, at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God; and as touching [interlined] Such] – worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give devise and dispose of the same in the manner and form following; that is to say,---

In the first place, I give and bequeath to ANN my dearly beloved wife, during her widowhood, fifty acres of Land whereon I now live, together with all my Household goods and Plantation tools and stock of Horses and Cattle except such as shall hereafter be bequeathed; also I give to my well beloved Son VICTOR NEELEY my rifle gun and, whipsaw,---also I give to my well---beloved Daughters MARY and JANE Each one shilling, --- Also I give to my beloved son JOHN NEELEY the tract of land whereon he now lives containing forty eight acres and a Sett of smiths tools now in possession of Samll Clampet, Also I give to my RICHARD NEELEY---fifty acres of Land being the one half of the Tract whereon as soon as he shall arrive at the age of Twenty one years and the remainder of the Said tract devised to my beloved wife after her decease, ------- Also I give to my beloved daughters ANN, ABIGAIL----SUSANNAH & SARAH Each One cow and Calf; ---Also I give to my well beloved Sons CLEMENT and ALEXANDER alertain [a certain] tract of land Bounding on JOHN BRENT—SAMLL CLAMPELL BARTH JONES of the land I now live [interlined: upon}; I also give to my son CLEMENT all my Turning Tools;--- I constitute make and ordain my only beloved wife ANN my sole Executrix and VICTOR NEELEY my sole Executor of this my last will and Testament, I do here by --- utterly disallow revoke and disannul every other former testaments wills & Legacees ---willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming, this and no Other, to be my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have here unto Set my hand and sealed the day and the day and date above written.

Richard Neeley (seal)

Signed, Sealed published pronounced proclaimed

And declared by the Said RICHARD NEELEY

As his Last Will and Testament in the Presence of us---

Thomas X Smith

John X Brant

Jno Pearson

It was proved by Col.
JI do know Rebecca Hunter is my mother's aunt. Rebecca's brother is Johny Hunter, she has another sister, Froney, and a couple of other brothers. James Neely is on a census living next door to the George Hunter family. I think he is a cousin to Johny.
