William Arthur Neer, born 1892 Warkworth Ontario

Hello,

I'm trying to find out what happened to William Arthur Neer after about 1930 when he apparently left his wife and children who were then living in Oshawa, Ontario. Did he marry again? Anyone ever heard of him? He had two sisters: May Lillian, who married Thomas Ralph Whattam (he died in 1922 and she moved to New York, I think), and Letta Leona (aka Leata) who married Alex Smith and died in Rochester, NY in 1984. His parents were William Neer and Phoebe Dainard.

Thank you for any clues you might have.

Janice Nickerson
416 920-2206

My research has been focused on the genealogy of Conrad NEER Jr to Charles Everett NEER, that is our lineage. Recently discovered the final piece of the puzzle that allowed us to submit an application to DAR based on the fact Ann Conard, daughter of Patriot John Conard, married Conrad NEER jr.

Regarding your question: Ancestry.com, one-world tree contains info on your ancestor, unfortunately it is undocumented/unsourced, but it gives you clues for investigation. The Balch Library in Leesburg, VA has a considerable collection of 1700-1900 genealogy info on the Neer family. The Loudoun County Archives has a great collection of marriages, deeds, etc that allow you to track your ancestors.

One-World Tree has the following: father/mother of James NEER: James NEER and Susanna Hammer, grandparents: Phillip NEER and Elizabeth POTTS, great grandparents: Conrad NEER sr and Nancy NEER.

Good hunting.

Re: Conrad Neer jr and Jesse Neer

Hi Cody and thanks for the note. Unfortunately, the NEER KINDRED book does not include "documentation" proving relationships for many of the folks in the book. Documentation proving relationships include Bibles, land records, wills, probate records, marriage records submitted by ministers and recorded by the County, etc. In the case of the relationships between Conrad NEER Jr and Jesse NEER, NEER KINDRED did not include "proof".

Subsequent to posting the query I've located two land sales recorded in the Loudoun County Court and available from the Loudoun County Archives. The sales specifically identified Jesse, and his brothers and sisters, as heirs of Conrad. This was the proof I needed to show that Jesse was the son of Conrad Jr. That proof was last item needed to complete application for my wife for membership in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution based on the fact that Conrad NEER Jr married Ann CONARD daughter of John CONARD, documented patriot. We submitted the application to DAR after a local rep agreed we had the documentation necessary. We expect to hear if the application was accepted sometime this spring. If my wife is accepted to DAR, that means anyone else who can prove relationship to Conrad Neer Jr is eligible for either DAR or SAR.

Good hunting !

Barry (barry@schwoerers.com)

I don't know how she got the info, but I have a big book called, "Neer Kindred" and it's in there.

Thanks,

Codi

P.S.- My father and I really want to visit Neersville, VA this summer.
While I'm sorry for my oopsie on the will/deed thing, I'm not sorry I contacted you. My line is down through Conrad Jr's brother, Phillip as I understand it. I've been off this line for several years and only recently returned to it after I got terribly confused and was presented with bad info as a guide from a family member. Finally, I'm getting some things out of pencil and more firmly into ink. Having these children/spouses will be a wonderful addition to my lists. I am already in DAR through another line, and I really enjoy it. It's neat to be able to connect all those dots, isn't it? Thanks again for replying. I am glad to get more info.

Hi. The data confirming Jesse is son of Conrad Neer Jr is not in a will. Conrad Neer Jr died intestate in late 1817 in Loudoun Co., VA. The Loudoun County court directed an inventory of his estate which was completed in early 1818 and settlement came in a court directed action in 1824/5.

Confirmation that Jesse is the son of Conrad Neer Jr is in two 1825 deeds cited in my original posting. The deeds identify the children of Conrad Neer Jr and his wife, Ann CONARD NEER.

The children of Conrad NEER Jr and Ann CONARD are: Sarah (married Christian Miller), Samuel (married Sarah ?), Nathan (married Eliza ?), Ann (Married Joseph Russell), Martha (remained unmarried), Jesse (Married Matilda Kalb) and Joseph (married ??). (I'm not with my notes so don't have all the marriages memorized)

The reason I was interested in proof is the fact that John CONARD, father of Ann CONARD, is a documented patriot from the Revolutionary War. We had proof of all other relationships from Conrad Neer Jr to my wife and just needed proof Jesse was the son of Conrad Jr. With that proof we are in process of completing application to NSDAR.

If you can prove your are a descendant of Conrad Neer Jr and his wife Ann CONARD NEER, you can contact your local NSDAR rep and start the process for application.

So I am clear and to see if what I have is correct (as it's all an unconfirmed work in progress at this point), you are saying that:

Jesse is s/o Conrad in the will (which state/county?)

Additional siblings that I have tentatively pencilled in are: James, David, Elizabeth, and Barbara. Can you confirm these names as well?

Any info is appreciated.

Thank you,
Freda Blake Bradley

Am not related to this family though I do Neer research. The answer to your question is that Cody Neer is her maiden name. She was married to Clark Madison Rodgers in 1928 in Fort Collins,Co. Clark was b. 22 Nov. 1901 in Fillmore Co, Ne. and d. 8 Feb. 1978 In Fort Collins, Co. He married a second time in 1947 in Fort Collins a Clara E. Robertson Smith b. 1903 in Ok. So it appears they were divorced. There are three children listed with only a Barbara named, other two not named. Hope this helps you.

Re: Neer Genealogy revisited

I have copies of records from Loudoun County Marriage that list "Amos Near(Neer) and Sarah Connard (Conard), ward of William Paxson, bm. Samuel Near attests grooms age, 21 Sept 1809. Mines."
A record from Charles Blair Tavenner Collection of Family records " Amos N. m. 1809 Sarah Conard dau of Jonathan C."
This last record is hand written and a bit difficult to read.
As for John Neer, and wife Annie I will do a bit more looking thru my records and see if I have them.
My line goes thru Philip b. 1834 son of William Neer b. 1802 and Sarah Frasier( ?). I have not proven who the father of William is. It may be your John as I have somewhat traced him to John b. 1771 but the wife is unsure. My Philip ended up in Williams Co, Ohio. Most of the Neers went to Clark Co. There is a John Neer b. 1771 d. 2 March 1849 in Center Township, Williams Co, Ohio. If you or anyone else knows more about this family would appreciate hearing.

Descendants of Claud Lewis Neer

Generation No. 1

1. CLAUD LEWIS2 NEER (HORATIO CLARENCE1) was born 03 Jan 1901 in Plumas County, California, and died 14 Jun 1978 in Crescent Mills, Plumas County, California. He married (1) EVA BRIDGET WHEELOCK. She was born 29 Mar 1901 in California, and died Apr 1978 in Crescent Mills, Plumas County, California. He married (2) ALICE MAY BANKUS 03 Jul 1928 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, daughter of JOHN BANKUS and MABEL RELYEA. She was born Abt. 1912 in Idaho.

Notes for CLAUD LEWIS NEER:
Claude Lewis Neer married first Alice May Bankus, daughter of John Addison Bankus and Mabel Agnes Relyea. No children. He married second Eva Bridget Unknown. There are no known children from the union of Claude and Eva. Eva is listed as 'unknown'. There are some references to her as a Wheelock. However, there is no record of her in the Wheelock family. So, it is possible that if she ever was a Wheelock, it was by marriage prior to the Neer marriage, not by birth.

1928 -Historical Newspapers > Reno Gazette (Reno, Nevada) > 1928 > July > 3
Marriage Licenses:
NEER-Bankus - Claud Neer, Crescent Mills, Cal., and Alice Bankus,
Taylorsville, Cal.

Name: Claude Lewis Neer
Sex: M
Birth: 3 JAN 1901 in Plumas County, California
Death: 14 JUN 1978 in Plumas County, California
Burial: 1978 Crescent Mills, Plumas County, California
Social Security Number: 559-10-4278
Reference Number: 934
Father: Horatio Clarence Neer b: 4 JUN 1863 in Sodus, Berrien County, Michigan
Mother: Martha Jane Drake b: 28 APR 1864 in Michigan
Marriage Eva Bridget Unknown b: 29 MAR 1901 in California

SSDI:
Claud NEER
Birth Date: 3 Jan 1901
Death Date: Jun 1978
Social Security Number: 559-10-4278
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: California
Death Residence Localities
ZIP Code: 95934
Localities: Crescent Mills, Plumas, California
Death Benefit Localities
Zip Code: 95947
Localities: Almanor, Plumas, California
Greenville, Plumas, California

I checked the Plumas County papers for a full three weeks after Claude's death.
Family members seeking the identity of the unknown Neer who married Alice Bankus, born in Idaho about 1912. Alice married Neer when she was 16 years old, probably in California. She is shown in the 1930 Sacramento, CA Census living with her sister, Marie (Bankus) Meyers Harris, so the marriage may have been about over by then. Unknown if there were any children from this union.
