Matteo Negro was my grandfather. We know he immigrated in the late 1800's. He was supposed to have sisters and brothers left in Italy. Nothern Italy to be exact.

His fathers name was Antonio Alegro born in or about 1853 and his mothers name was Contantina Maria Teresa Pattadino?

Can anyone give me a hand? He married Cessila Riva in Iron Mountain, MI and migrated west to Seattle after working many mines across the country.

The Philadelphia NEGROs

Hi,

My name is Connie Livingston and am interested
locating any relatives from Italy or in the US.

My father's name is Michael Joseph Negro.
He was born in 1925 in Philadelphia.
He has 7 siblings; John (Giovanni), Joseph,
Caroline, Nancy, Mary, Theresa, and Agnes.

His father's name (my Grandfather)was Guiseppe Negro. He was
born in the province of Piemonte, Italy (Castagnoli Lonzi) in 1856. He is the son of Michele and Agnese Negro.
He had 9 siblings; Michele, Giavonni, Carlo, Attilio, Constantine, Theresa, Caterina, Anna, and Maggiorina.

My grandfather's father's name (my great grandfather) was Giovanni Negro. He was born an only child to Michel and Agnese Negro in 1856.
He was also born in Costagnoli Lonzi.

He married Carolina Gobino (my great grandmother).

In 1906, my great grandfather (Giavonni) came to the US with his wife and
4 sons followed by Maggiorina and Constantine. I believe Michele, Theresa,
Caterina and Anna stayed in Italy.

If anyone recognizes this part of the Negro family I would appreciate hearing from
you.

NEGRO.. surname .. in Massachusetts 1600's ..

In the book, "History of Billerica, Massachusetts," there is a reference to a slave belonging to the Rev. Samuel WHITING. In a record, dated 30 October, 1693, it states: "At this meeting our Reverend Pastor, Mr. Samuel WHITING, did set at liberty and free from his service, Simon NEGRO, who hath been his servant about thirty and one years, being now about forty years old. The which said Simon NEGRO the town of Billerica doth accept as an inhabitant amongst themselves."

I was wondering if that surname, NEGRO, was a made-up surname .. in the 13 Colonies ... coming from the term in general usage during the 1600's ..

I was also wondering if the surname .. continued on .. beyond the 1600's ..

My grandmother, Ida Gianella Merlo saved prayer cards for family and friends. Some have photos that I would be glad to scan and send.
