Seeking info on family of Independence Neighbors

I believe Independence Neighbors was married to Laura L. Byers, daughter of John C. Byers and Massey Akin.

Independence and Laura had 5 known children:
1. Laura Pearl Neighbors md. Willie Pope Fielding; children: daughter Albertie and sons Jodie, Ernest and Willie
2. John Albert Neighbors
3. William Neighbors
4. James Ira Neighbors
5. Nettie Neighbors md. George Green

I found a death certificate for James Ira Neighbors but it only lists his father, Independence Neighbors. Laura Neighbors is listed on the 1910 Navarro Co., TX census living with James Ira and Laura Pearl Neighbors Fielding.

In 1900, Independence was living in Rains Co., TX and listed as Widowed on census. His wife Laura is also listed as Widowed on the 1900 Little River Co., AR census but in 1910 she is listed as Married 36 years with no husband listed.

Any help with this family will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michelle

F. Newton Neighbors

I am looking for information on the parents F. Newton Neighbors, born around 1820-1825 in either North or South Carolina. He is listed on the 1850 census in Talladega, Co., AL as No. Car. as his birthplace. He living next door to John Neighbors, born in So. Car., who I believe may be his father. Newton married Susan Ann Gurley in Talladega Co. in 1848. They were living in Calhoun Co., AL in 1870, his birthplace listed as No. Car., and were living in Clay Co., AL in 1870, birthplace listed as So. Car. I can find no further documentation after 1870 on either Newton or Susan. Newton and Susan had the following children:
James A. b. abt 1848 in Ala
John R. b. 1850 in Talladega Co., AL
Asberry or Asbury J. b. abt 1855, AL
William James b. 12 Apr 1857, AL (my gg grandfather)
George b. 1859 prob Calhoun Co., AL
Luther b. 1862, Alabama (Calhoun or Clay Co.)
L.M. (male child) b. abt 1869 Prob. Clay Co., AL

At least five of these sons (James A., John R., William J., George, and Luther, moved to Amity, Clark Co., Arkansas around 1880, and were all listed on the 1880 census there. William J.'s first child, Marion Hixson Neighbors was born in Alabama in 1879, so they must have just made it to Arkansas right before the 1880 census was taken. William James was killed when he hit a gas pocket while digging a well in 1882, and his widow returned to Clay Co., AL with his three children shortly after.

Any information that anyone can share on these Neighbors would be greatly appreciated.

Any interest in DNA testing for the Neighbors/Nabors/Nabers surname?

A number of y-dna surname projects have proven to be very valuable to genealogy researchers. Is there any interest in starting a project for tne various spellings of the Nabors surname? Only males who have a direct paternal lineage to a Nabors ancestor (by any spelling) can submit y-dna samples for such a study. My wife's mother is a Nabers so she can't submit dna, but she could get one of her male cousins to participate. It might just help us solve the mystery of exactly which or how many lines of Nabers descend from Abraham Neighbours, 1684-1798, (wife Rebecca) who is believed to be the first ancestor by that name in the US.
Any interest out there in starting a new project?

I have run into a wall when searching. The earliest record I can find of my grandfather is the 1900 Federal census from Indian Territory Oklahoma and I find that his name and that of his brother and two sisters is incorrect. He is the step-son of Joseph Nevill. The name is listed as Lemuel Nabors but we know that is my grandfather, Lindsey Ellis Neighbors. His brother was Jesse and his sisters were Mary and Trudy. His Mother was Ida Stewig (I think) Neighbors Nevill and half siblings are John, Thomas and Maude. I believe his father's name was Robert Lee Neighbors and he died around 1895. If anyone can route me to more records, I would appreciate it. Linda Neighbors Wooldridge

Bob loved all types of sports, in particular baseball and basketball. He enjoyed playing golf, and he was an avid reader. Bob loved all animals, but especially dogs.
Hi I emailed you at the address you had listed on this posting. I hope it is still a valid address.
My father and grand father are from Arkansas, My grandfather was b. 02-04-1893, D.10-06-1951 Willam Andrew Neighbors. He married Lilly Ann Gilham or Mayberry... that part is a little fuzzy. They had 3sons, 2 daughters, I know he had a sister who lived in Tulsa who passed a few years ago. I have his social security card and a picture id from his employment at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
Nabours un Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma

My G. G. Grandmother, Ellen L. Nabours was born in Alabama on 28 June 1842. She married James W. Fowler on March 11, 1857 in Madison County, Alabama. James died in Chatenooga Tennesse (died of disese while participating in civil war)on April 17, 1863. The 1860 census lists a child, J. E. Fowler age 1. I am unable to find Ellen and any family in 1870.
On January 31 1876 she married P. G. Simpson. An R.E. Nabours put his seal on the marriage certificate. Joseph Green Simpson was born on February 11, 1877. By the 1880 census she is a widow living in Hardin, Faulkner County, Arkansas. She was living with James R. Fowler (age 18) and Joseph Simpson (age 3). James Fowler marries Cynthia Wooly on December 17, 1882 in Faulkner County, Arkansas. They had several children.

I found a marriage licence for Henry Hall and Ellen Simpson as of August 21, 1880 but the marriage was not performed. However Ellen Hall is living with Joseph Simpson (he married Rosia Watson) and his family in the 1900 census in Chickesaw Nation, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). in In 1910 she is still living with Joseph and family in Clay County, Texas. She died in Burkburnett, Wichita County, Texas on November 20, 1920.

On the 1900 and 1910 census she says her Father was born in South Carolina and her Mother in Alabama and that she had borne 4 children and 2 were still living.

I am looking for other decendents and any ancestors of Ellen.

Barbara Wyatt

Hi again Paul - Thank you so much for passing my name onto Fred for the reunion info. I am so sorry to hear about your sister Reba passing away last year! From the looks of it, she must have been a wealth of information on the family. I think we would have really enjoyed meeting her. I think she may have been in touch with my husband's grandmother, Bernice Parker, several years ago. Bernice is in her 90's now but has spoken of a woman who supplied her with a lot of information on the Neighbors end of the family. Bernice's Mother was Birdie Bell Neighbors(Birdie Bell Neighbors, William Bud Marcus Neighbors, John Ledford Monroe Neighbors JR). I look forward to comparing notes sometime with you. What are the titles of the books that Reba wrote? Are there still any copies available by any chance? Thank you so much for your help! Andrea

Sarah Nabors/Neighbors NC to TX

Sarah A. Nabors. Her sister was named Winnie. Sarah married Robert Wilson. They were parents of my late great grandmother Verdie. Anyone have information about Sarah and her family? The last name might be Neighbors, but not sure.

Re: MALINDA GARRETT NEIGHBORS

According to the 1860 census, Malinda (Neighbors) Highfill and her husband Jeremiah Highfill lived in Jackson, Dallas County, Missouri with their seven children and two members of the Neighbors family. All of their children except the last one was born in Tennessee, meaning that they could possibly have married in Tennessee. Here is the entire household as listed on the 1860 census:

Jeremiah HIGHFILL, 58, head of house, farmer
Born: About 1802, North Carolina
Malinda (NEIGHBORS) HIGHFILL, 39, wife
Born: About 1821, Kentucky
Artemissa HIGHFILL, 18, daughter
Born: About 1842, Tennessee
Jasper HIGHFILL, 16, son
Born: About 1844, Tennessee
Emily HIGHFILL, 13, daughter
Born: About 1847, Tennessee
James H. HIGHFILL, 8, son
Born: About 1852, Tennessee
Martha HIGHFILL, 5, daughter
Born: About 1855, Tennessee
Henry G. HIGHFILL, 3, son
Born: About 1857, Tennessee
Matilda HIGHFILL, 1 daughter
Born: About 1859, Missouri
Sela NEIGHBORS, 13 step daughter or sister-in-law
Born: About 1847, Tennessee
Jesse A. NEIGHBORS, 9 step son or brother-in-law

Notice the abnormal pattern in the birth of the children. I believe that Jeremiah HIGHFILL was married to someone else who bore his first three children, Artissema, Jasper, and Emily. Sela and Jesse were born out of wedlock to Malinda NEIGHBORS, who then married a divorced or widowered Jeremiah HIGHFILL by whom she bore James H., Martha, Henry G., and Matilda.

I hope this helps,
Dave Neighbors
