NEILL/NAIL FAMILY website has been revised

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rayphill/
PHILLIPS AND CALLAHAN FAMILY LINES IN ARKANSAS, TEXAS & OKLAHOMA
I have revised my website to make it more efficient and user friendly. It includes a large number of records for NEILL's and their allied surnames. I have updated the GEDCOM supporting this website on Rootsweb World Connect and have linked individuals from my website directly to this master GEDCOM. I am attaching pictures, census data, copies of source records and other important information to the master individual records using post 'em notes. Users may also add post 'em notes to the master individual records. It is still a work in progress but I believe it will make things less cumbersome. Check it out.
O'Neill's of Puerto Rico ! Oral history and Facts

Don Arturo O’Neill y Chabert was born in Loiza, Puerto Rico in 1820.
Don Tulio Luis O’Neill was born in St.Croix June 17, 1808.
The O’Neill’s of my family were in Puerto Rico long before the O’Neill’s of the Fews descendants of the 2nd Marquez Del Norte Don Arturo O’Neill O’Keeffe had arrived in Puerto Rico.
Don Patricio O’Neill Garcia was married in March 5, 1778 to Anna Sanchez (Surname is not yet correctly given or unknown). 30 years before Don Tulio O’Neill y Chabert was born in the island of St. Croix.
The same year of 1802 Don Jose O’Neill Feliciano married Ines Umpierre on March 4, 1802 in Puerto Rico and in St. Croix Don Arturo O’Neill O’Keeffe married Joana Chabert Heyliger on March 19, 1802.

Don Jose O’Neill Feliciano & Ines Umpierre married in March 4, 1802. (Puerto Rico) Don Jose O’Neill Feliciano was an estimated 23 to 24 years old.
Don Arturo O’Neill O’Keeffe & Joana Chabert Heyliger married in March 19, 1802. (St. Croix) Don Arturo O’Neill O’Keeffe was an estimated 19 years old.

Interesting fact is that Don Arturo O’Neill O’Keeffe was born 5 years after Don Patricio O’Neill Garcia was married in March 5, 1778. Not making our family part of the Asturias O’Neill’s of the Fews “Prince’s of the Fews”.

I estimate Don Patricio O’Neill Garcia was born sometime around the 1750’s and his father Don Juan O’Neill sometime circa 1720’s or 1730’s.

Don Patricio O’Neill Garcia 1750’s.
Don Juan O’Neill circa 1720’s or 1730’s.

Henry Rua O’Neill of the Fews migrated to Spain circa the late 1750’s. All his children were born in the 1730’s and 1740’s many in Ireland and Spain. There were some of the O’Neill’s of the Fews in the Caribbean but in the late 1700’s no records to my knowledge of the O’Neill’s of the Fews in the Caribbean in the 1730’s.

If the dates are correct Col. Terencio O’Neill is believed to have been born circa 1759. Captain General Juan O’Neill is believed to have been born circa 1765.
Captain General Felix O’Neill of the Fews who was married twice had two sons

1.	Juan O’Neill Ranisol
2.	Jose O’Neill Ranisol

There was Lt. General Felix O’Neill of Creggan born circa 1720’s and was in the service of the Spanish Army. Date of his estimated birth is too early to be the father of Don Juan O’Neill
The Son of Lt. General Felix O’Neill was Captain General Juan O’Neill Valera born circa 1765. Until more records are found it will be known or a male within the O’Neill’s of the Fews obtains a Y-DNA test.

Now it must be noted that there must be some O’Neill’s of the Fews within the O’Neill population in Puerto Rico from the” Prince’s of the Fews” Asturias O’Neill’s of the Fews.
1.	Tulio Luis O’Neill y Chabert born in St. Croix June 6, 1802 no records have yet been found of any of his descendants. But it’s believed they either must be within the O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico population or in the island of St. Croix.
2.	Don Gonzalo O’Neill y Chabert born December 20, 1829 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico the godson of Cadet Don Carlos Eugenio O’Neill of the regiments of the island of Granada. Not much is known of his male descendants but the town of Rio Piedras has a long tradition of having many O’Neill’s.

Dates, history and oral history do not match my families with that of the O’Neill’s of the Fews. Oral history does match that of the O’Neill’s of Tyrone and other O’Neill’s who fought in Flanders. The oral history is that of two high ranking military O’Neill’s who arrived in Puerto Rico and their ancestors fought in the land were people wore wooden shoes. Only place these O’Neill’s fought was in Flanders. Only O’Neill’s that were high ranking military men were the O’Neill’s of Tyrone who lived on the island of Martinique for 200 years with knowledge of the Caribbean islands.
Dates do match with Henrique O’Neill born circa 1688 married to Rose Plissonnean in Sept. 25, 1724 at the age of 36. Henry’s (Henrique) grandfather was Don Patrick (Patricio) O’Neill and his grandfather Don Juan O’Neill Magennis of Flanders son of Hugh O’Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone.

I am in daily contact with the Asturia O'Neill's of the Fews "Princes of the Fews" ... it is believed there are O'Neill's of the Fews with in the population of Puerto Rico

I would suggest any O'Neill who truely wants to know there origins to contact me about a y-dna test...

@ redhandking@hotmail.com

Until more documents are found and more of the O'Neill's outside me and another o'Neill obtain a Y-DNA test the truth will not be known...

I would like to find the poem "Theon" written by Sally Neill Roach and published in 1882 by J.B. Lippencott. Mrs. Roach was an ancestor and it would be nice to have a copy of her poem. She was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and was the daughter of Matthew Neill and Eliza Dix Neill and the wife of John Roach. The publication is no longer in print. Is there anyone who has a copy and would be willing to share the poem?

They are the sons of my great grandaunt Walbargia "Bertha" Eble and James Neill (b. 1853) of Indiana. Bertha died at a young age, James moved to Kansas and remarried.
Re: [NEILL] DNA results for the Peter A. Neill (1811-1852) and father John Neill (1778-1859) male line

Update and clarification on the DNA results from yesterday.

Thanks to the kind information provided me this morning by A. Turner, one of the authors of "Trace Your Roots with DNA," I now understand that the DNA results do not mean that I must be directly descended from Alexander Neill m. Anne Cathey. Instead, based on the information in my post of yesterday, the DNA results show that my line is descended from a common *father* for my ancestor and Alexander Neill.

This puts me back in the line I was hoping to prove, John Neill m. Sarah Duckworth, as son of William Neill m. Sarah (possibly Callender/Callander).

Any other direct descendant Neills thinking about getting their DNA tested?? It would be very nice to have a larger pool for more narrowed results.

Regards,
Lorraine
Allrelated
[NEILL] DNA results for the Peter A. Neill (1811-1852) and father John Neill (1778-1859) male line

I had my father's first cousin take the Ancestry DNA test (which is half price right now, or else I wouldn't have done it), and the results came in today. I thought I would share them here for other Neill researchers, and to see if any of you have experience with this and can clarify what *exactly* it means (aside from the general information available from the help tab).

It turns out that our Neill branch belongs to the Haplogroup I (capital I, not lower case l), a group that emigrated from Africa to Scandinavia a WAY long time ago. The group then emigrated from Scandinavia to Northwest Europe. Later, some went back to Scandinavia. This is a completely bare bones description from the 6 pages I downloaded. I was very surprised to see NO direct links to the British Isles on the map. But then I remembered that Norsemen conquered what became Normandy, coming over later in 1066 for a look-see at England :) I have some of them in another line. So, maybe it is not surprising that a Neill might be from a Norse and not a Celt line. Nonetheless, I was surprised that there were no Irish or Scottish parts of the map lit up.

In any event, Ancestry automatically links DNA results up with Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation results. There I found the best earliest match, better than any with the Ancestry registered DNA users. This is only from the pool of registered DNA providers. It shows that - in this match - my father's first cousin's most likely common ancestor goes back to 7th generation. The earliest known male ancestor on that matching line in their database is in the 6th generation: GEORGE CATHEY NEILL, b. 1798 TN, m. Elizabeth Harriet ERWIN, b. 1799, NC.

The direct male line pedigree that SMGF shows from its FamilySearch.org files is:

2 living generations with no data given publicly;
3. George Truit Neill, b. 3 Aug 1902, Milam Co., TX;
4. George Archie Neill, b. 16 Jan 1862, Milam Co., TX;
5. John Erwin Neill, 2 Jan 1826, Bedford Co., TN;
6. George Cathey Neill, b. 1798, TN.

Now, I had George Cathey Neill (b. 15 Dec 1798, Bedford Co., TN; d. 29 Sep 1845, Marshall Co., TN) in my database. The line continues backwards in my database (compiled from various sources - none of them an old family Bible or other primary source):

7. Alexander Neill, b. 1753, Rowan Co., NC; d. 1827, Marshall Co., TN.
8. William Neill, b. 1720, Chester Co., PA; 21 Jun 1797, Lincoln Co., NC. m. Mary Polly Clinton.
9. William Neill (listed as probable father), b. abt 1702, Armagh or Lurgan, Ireland; d. 14 Oct 1766, Rowan Co., NC. m. Sarah (possible Callandar/Callender).

If I understood the information provided by Ancestry and SMGF.org, that would make the 7th generation ancestor the most likely direct common ancestor, i.e., Alexander Neill m. Anne Cathey, 7th generation, would be the common ancestor???

The DNA test, so far, is the only *concrete* information that I have that links these people to the last *proved* ancestor in our line, John Neill (1778-1859). From the various sources - not concrete - I had thought it likely that the earliest ancestor on our Neill line was William Neill m. Sarah (possibly Callendar); then his son *John Neill m. Sarah Duckworth*; then his believed son John Neill m. Ann (possibly McKenzie). Does the DNA test mean that instead of John Neill m. Sarah Duckworth that I descend instead from Alexander Neill m. Anne Cathey?? Is anyone aware of a John Neill son of theirs? I have only seen George Cathey Neill as a son.

I hope I've helped some Neill researcher by sharing the DNA research results publicly. I am happy to share additional marker details, if wanted. I also hope some savvy researcher will be able to clarify whether the DNA results mean that we *have* to be related to Alexander Neill in a direct father-to-son line, or whether it just means that we share a common ancestor in that general time frame, in which case, the John Neill m. Sarah Duckworth could still be my most likely direct ancestor. Both Alexander Neill m. Anne Cathey and John Neill m. Sarah Duckworth share William Neill m. Sarah (possibly Callendar) as a common direct ancestor.

Thanks for any input.

Lorraine
Allrelated
x-posted to Rootsweb and Genforum Neill lists
Could this be the same John Carson that witnessed Capt. Wm. Neill's will (Andrew's father). Will dated 1797. If this is the same Mary, she was one busy lady!! hehe
Nancy

Our ancestor John Neill passed through Kentucky on his way to Burlington Iowa in the early 1800's. He is noted to be from Katesbridge Ballyroney, Ireland. He is said to have had brothers who also came over. We have been trying to pin down the names of the brothers. Do you know where Samuel came from? There was a Samuel on early census records in Iowa.

I don't know what all I do have on the Neill's because of a move and a couple of Computer issues but I will look and get back with you on that. All we've been trying to find out about is which McDowell Male (we beleve that it was either a James or William)was married to Mary Cathey,but there is not much to go on and I can find no records that reputiate this. Do you know of anything? Thanx, Chuck

  Well #1: Joseph McDowell heard of whatever info it was;Not Col. James Neill,it's not substansiated that "a Murder" was implied,but possibly just conjecture...J.C. went to Marengo Co. Ala.or Demopolis to be more exact,to "Fetch" his Mother and Father-in-law,and for whatever reason bring them back to the same neighborhood in Marshall co,(Farmington)Tn. where they remained because of thier advance ages,which says that they still owned property in Middle Tn.,and perhaps what they had in Alabama as well. # 2: I've seen nothing that suggests Col. James Neill was the subject of the whole affair....I am only guessing here,but perhaps this is because of James allegedly coming back to Tn.,and not his murder,etc...who knows!

  Yes,thats right...Mary Cathey the daughter of Captn. Geo. Cathey Sr. was married to a McDowell Male prior to being married to Andrew Neill (Sr.)the question is which one! A good clue to go on is that the 1st 3 of Joseph Cathey McDowell's (b.1781,NC) children were James Harvey,Willaim Ransom,and Louisa...being that they usually named thier kids after a Grandfather,or Father,Grandmother or Mother you'd think that thats the place to look in a previous generation...but,since everybody tries to link thier McDowell line to the most documented and historic line,and everybody throws whatever they assume out on the web,then post even more erroneous info on top of that...well,you get terribly confused and research is convoluted to the point of insanity. My best guess would be a James McDowell,thats why "Mary Cathey McDowell" is so important to us,do you khow of anything on her?

Do you know that Andrew Sr. had a son named Andrew? I can't remember where I had read this info or but I believe that I have it documented (if I'm thinking of it correctly),and that there were believed to be many more men at the Alamo than 180?
James Neill or Neal of Sleivnacloy Derriaghy Co Antrim 1862

James Neill or Neal married a Dorthea Lackey and farmed at Sleivnacloy until the farm was "sold" to the O'Connell family.

I wish to trace descendants of this Neill family. They had a daughter Dorthea Neill.

The family name was Neal in the Griffiths Valuation, but that changed to Neill in later land rental documents.

Re: Houma, Louisiana-Harry Neill married Alice Hutchinson U.K.

Hi, I have just now stumbled across your posting. Your Aunt Alice and Uncle Harry are my relatives too. Harry s brother, James Neill was my grandfather. My mother is Netta Neill. We visited Alice and Harry in the early seventies when they lived in Houma. We were stationed briefly in Biloxi, Miss and I can recall as a child cousins from Louisiana visiting us. I dont know if you are one of them since I was only 10 and cant remember any names.
I have some of the family tree worked out for Harry should you be interested, since he is my Uncle by blood descent. Harry originated from a village in Scotland called
Bridge o Weir. I have traced his family back to Ireland.
Please let me know if you need any more help. Regards Diane
