Crown Point — Frank C. Nels, 89, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at his home on Main Street in Crown Point.
He was born in Purseglove, W.Va., on Dec. 3, 1911, to Polish immigrant parents, John Gwozdziewicz and Kate (Kology) Nels.
Mr. Nels worked at the Crown Point Fish Hatchery for 40 years. He also worked at the canteen at the Crown Point Drive-In Theater. Most of his younger years were busy with the Crown Point Fire Department. He was a fire chief for many years as well as fire commissioner.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing at the lake and puttering in his shop. Another enjoyable hobby was wine making.
He was married to the former Julia Petro of Mineville for 54 years. She predeceased him in 1991.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Fred White of Malone and Jackie and Joe Vezina of South Burlington, Vt.; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Being the eldest of eight children, he is survived by two brothers, Benjamin and his wife Dolores of Syracuse and Stanley of Crown Point; two sisters, Mary Mazurowski and her husband Charles of Crown Point and Anna Wojewodzic of Port Henry.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, John and Walter.
A memorial Mass was held on Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Sacred Heart Church in Crown Point.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Crown Point Fire Department or the Crown Point Rescue Squad.
